Gravatarirony - Canada is mounting an expedition to find the remains of the 1845 British attempt to find the Northwest Passage. The ships Erebus and Terror were trapped in ice and Sir John Franklin and his crew of 128 died.

Global warming has opened up the region and Canada is sending a team to survey an area south of King William Island. Frozen corpses, believed to be those of members of the expedition, have been found in the area. 'Canada will embark on its own search, which has the allure of an Indiana Jones mystery,' said environment minister John Baird. This year's search will last six weeks and will be followed by further explorations in 2009 and 2010 if need be.

Weltanschaung is the Danish National Penis Museum

Gravatarhttp://volokh.com/posts/1218815216.shtml

It was supposed to be just another federal drug prosecution. The federal prosecutors introduced evidence that the man on trial was involved in the black market drug trade. The defense attorney said the government agents entrapped his client. And then the twelve citizen-jurors retired to deliberate the outcome of the case.

But then something unusual happened. The jury sent a note to the trial judge with the following query: Since the Constitution needed to be amended in 1919 to authorize federal criminal prosecutions for manufacturing and smuggling alcohol, a juror wanted to know from the judge where “is the constitutional grant of authority to ban mere possession of cocaine today?”

When the jury sent out more notes about a juror that wasn’t going to sign off on an unconstitutional prosecution, Young halted the proceedings to identify the ”problem juror.” Once discovered, that juror was replaced with an alternate–over the objections of defense counsel. Shortly thereafter, the new jury returned with guilty verdicts on several cocaine-related charges.

Global warming has opened up the region and Canada is sending a team to survey an area south of King William Island. Frozen corpses, believed to be those of members of the expedition, have been found in the area.

I knew someone who participated in this excavation ...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Fra...and_exhumations

After obtaining legal permission,[50] Beattie's team visited Beechey Island in August 1984 to perform autopsies on the three crewmen buried there.[51] They started with the first crew member to die, Leading Stoker John Shaw Torrington. After completing Torrington's autopsy and exhuming and briefly examining the body of John Hartnell, the team, pressed for time and threatened by the weather, returned to Edmonton with tissue and bone samples.[52] Trace element analysis of Torrington's bones and hair indicated that the crewman "would have suffered severe mental and physical problems caused by lead poisoning".[53] Although the autopsy indicated that pneumonia had been the ultimate cause of the crewman's death, lead poisoning was cited as a contributing factor.[54]

During the expedition, the team visited a place about 1 kilometre (0.6 mi) north of the grave site to examine fragments of hundreds of food tins discarded by the Franklin's men. Beattie noted that the seams were poorly soldered with lead, which had likely come in direct contact with the food.[55][56] The release of findings from the 1984 expedition and the photo of Torrington, a 138 year-old corpse well preserved by permafrost in the tundra, led to wide media coverage and renewed interest in the lost Franklin expedition.

well, yeah, except that a lot of people base their view of the world on their faith. everything.

although an atheist, i share some of their concerns, i just don't think it has anything to do with the fsm. i'm still interested in where the candidates stand on poverty, choice, war, aids, healthcare ... if the way to get people to pay attention is to ask those q's in church (as a civil meeting place) i don't have an objection. it could be a synagogue or a mosque or whatever.

the biblical stuff is a bit stinky, it implies that only xians have morals or social concerns. but beyond that, i can't complain much yet.

and fear not - i will.

GravatarHey!  Howsabout a little less amateur theology - since as far as I know, neither of these people are being bruited as Archbishop or Elder - and a little tad more of political or diplomatic practice?  Like, say, oh gee - when the hell do we get out of Irak?  What do we do about the collapsing economy?  How about immigration constraints that are destroying whole states?  Speaking of which, what about re-securing the right to habeas corpus or maybe some of the  0-odd constitutional amendments which have been gutted in the last eight years?

Why would I pay any attention at all to these clowns' theological fancies?

GravatarEvil. What is evil?

Gravatarat what point does a baby get human rights?

The answer is in the question. A baby is a fetus that's been born. So the moment of birth (separation from mother) is when it becomes a baby, and gets rights as a person.

Gravatardid OB handle the marriage question OK?

GravatarWhether we like it or not, people who consider themselves religious vote.

It's not the religious stuff, it's the church stuff. Who are these mega preachers that gives them the right to sit and decide which candidate is worthy?

It's interference by tax-exempt organizations using their lobbying powers to influence political outcomes.

GravatarNOW you're gonna see some real pandering!
Gummo | 08.16.08 - 9:04 pm | #

that would be my bet. the ironic thing is, obama has more in common with this audience than mccain.

Gravatarsay jesus christ! say it!

GravatarIt doesn't cost Obama anything. We're going to vote for him and maybe he picked up a few "undecided voters". How can you seriously be undecided? You either want to get the country back on the right track or you want to go back to the time when science was considered wizardry. It's not that hard!

Gravatarhow long before his vietnam experience comes up?

Gravatarclose.

he said patraeus.

GravatarHa!

McCain says Betrayus. Obama said his wife.

GravatarPetrayus!

Gravatarmcsame has his answers all ready no matter what the questions are.
catch the segues.

Gravatar#2: john lewis.

pander count: 1

GravatarObama should have said to McCain, "Nice shoes, they make you look taller." Double burn.

And when McCain gets offended, just say "hey, gotta keep your sense of humor."

Gravatar
McCain says Betrayus. Obama said his wife.

The Beer Queen of Central Arizona just cut his allowance in half!

Gravatarno applause for john lewis, btw.

GravatarOne of the greatest military leaders in our history? Did he really say that?

GravatarLike McCain didn't have these questions ahead of time..

GravatarThe CEO of EBAY????

GravatarMeg Whitman. CEO of E-bay. We need to call on her wisdom and knowledge.

GravatarYeah, nobody more inspirational than a CEO!

GravatarEBay!

Gravatarno applause for #3 either. the founder of ebay.

GravatarNow you want pandering? McCain says a main inspiration he'd turn to for advise is Petraeus. Missed the second one, but his third choice is Meg Whitman!?

Sounds like the pump has been well primed.
.

GravatarThat was 2, not 3

Gravataroh, god. mcsame recirculating the lie that lotsa folks make a living off ebay.
move over cheney.
i am surprised that he wouldnt mention his wife ...or try to make jesus make sense cause he lives in all of us.

GravatarJust what we need, more Betrayus

GravatarMeg Whitman?

GravatarC'mon McCain, expand on that a little.

Gravatargreatest moral failure? makes a joke.

his #1: first marriage
americas: we haven't been perfect but we are still the best there is.

GravatarMcCain's greatest moral failing is the failure of his first marriage.

America's has been that we have not devoted ourselves to causes greater than our self interests, my friends.

GravatarWho inspires you guys? Serious question. Here's my list

1. Husband
2. Mom
3. Son

Gravatar"My friends"

Take a shot!

GravatarRemember Bush singling at a SOTU the woman who founded Baby Einstein? Same thing with the eBay reference.

GravatarUm. He should have said his wife.

GravatarJust get down and blow him already :blecch:

Gravatarootless-e--I've avoided you and your certainty for quite awhile, but let me take this moment to tell you to shove your self-righteous where the sun don't shine.
noblejoanie | 08.16.08 - 9:04 pm | #

My certainty? That's rich coming from you. While you grew up on planet Secular which exists in some zone of your imagination, when I was growing up some of the most famous people I admired were Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, the Berrigan Brothers, Archbishop Romero, Abraham Heschel, and many others.

And from well before my time from when FDR read prayers on the radio to when Bill Clinton and Hillary kissed Billy Graham's ass, religion and politics in America has always been mixed.

What you may mean is that in the good old days we only had polite high protestantism in the public eye.

GravatarRhwanda?

GravatarHe doesn't love his wife.

Gravatar"Um. He should have said his wife."

Which one?

GravatarJohn Lewis?

This will come as surprising news to a man McCain has never asked for advice before...

...John Lewis.

Gravatar"My friends"

Take a shot!

One more alcohol-poisoning incident and the courts are going to get involved. No can do.

GravatarOh, you guys are watching the faith forum. Right.

I'm sitting with my kids, so we're watching Tom & Jerry. Probably just as intellectually stimulating, if Huggy's talking now.

GravatarUm. He should have said his wife.

he answered that for the greatest moral failure.

GravatarUm. He should have said his wife.

She's a trophy cash-cow, not an inspiration.

GravatarHis first answer just indicates his war mongering status....

GravatarHe should have said Jerry Lewis or Ray Lewis.

GravatarGhandi inspires me.

GravatarYou know who else will be pissed they weren't on his advice list?

Lieberman & Graham (the other wives)

Gravataroh my! he says he went against his party on torture!

i wonder what he'll answer to the flip-flop question?

now praising reagan.

GravatarLeave my Jets ALOOONNNE!

GravatarReally guys. Who are your top three inspirations?

GravatarHere's the mavericky softball question, ... Reagan CLAPCLAPCLAP Reagan won the cold war without firing a shot

GravatarI'm sitting with my kids, so we're watching Tom & Jerry. Probably just as intellectually stimulating, if Huggy's talking now.
Sinfonian,cultural interloper

Obama was as good as you could expect, McCain is making it very clear he will personally fellate everyone in the audience, if only they'll let him.

You made the right choice.

GravatarWhy do I suspect that somebody fed McCain the questions? Probably not Warren but somebody else who had seen them.

GravatarHell. Joe Louis.

GravatarWhat you may mean is that in the good old days we only had polite high protestantism in the public eye.

A much better choice than the current frequency calling the tune.

GravatarReagan is just the best ever...blah blah blah

war monger war monger war monger

GravatarPander "Reagan was one of the great great presidents in our history" pander, pant, pant.

GravatarHe didn't say spilling his guts to the enemy about troops movements and locations was his moral failure?

GravatarMcCain's greatest moral failing is the failure of his first marriage.

America's has been that we have not devoted ourselves to causes greater than our self interests, my friends.
Vicki, Who ♥ Al Gore | 08.16.08 - 9:10 pm

B-I-G-A-M-I-S-T

though I doubt Rick Warren will ask about that. Republican adultery and golddigging greed aren't sins according to Republican Jesus.

GravatarLotsa love from the audience.

I think I'll find something to do that's a little more productive.

GravatarAnd the ghost of The Gipper rears its head.

Gravatarrev warren has to explain the next question.

GravatarThanks, Gummo.

That summary is good enough for me.

GravatarHow can you seriously be undecided? You either want to get the country back on the right track or you want to go back to the time when science was considered wizardry. It's not that hard!

Gravatar150k is just a boring professional salary. It's what people get paid after they attend university for 6-8 years. These people have a little bit bigger house, maybe a time-share vacation home and boat, the ability to pay for their kids to go to college, and maybe an extra car but they work just as hard or even harder than everyone else. If they quit their job tomorrow they would have nothing. This is income, not wealth. They are not rich.

CBS.

GravatarGinsberg, Breyer, Souter, and Stevens
Vicki, Who ♥ Al Gore

Jesus Fucking Christ. And he wants to be president. He just solidified himself as "Bush pt. II, The Evil Years"

GravatarThe Baptists didn't hold his head under water long enough.

Gravatar... and he drops a mention that he is a Baptist now, till the election is over.

GravatarIt feels like they used BO as a prop to make McCain look better with their adherents. BO and Pastor Warren making nice, sharing dialogue, then bring in the redmeat.

GravatarHe wants America's hand all the way up your vagina.

GravatarOh fuck. I need a drink, or five.

GravatarWhat are you talking about? Are you forgetting it was Reagan in charge when Iran and Afghanistan came into the limelight?
Monica_A: Dammit! | 08.16.08 - 9:31 pm | #

Zbig has boasted about luring the Russians into Afghanistan and starting US support of the "mujadeen". And the US under Carter supported Savak and the Shah until they fell- the Embassy was seized while Carter was in office.

Reagan's criminal activities were far worse, of course.

Gravatar I'm not watching, but I get the sense that he isn't.

You one of them hippies what don't believe in The TV?

Did he really say that? I can't watch ...

GravatarBy the way, that's not clapping you hear after McCain's rahrah bullshit.
It's the sound of half the people in the audience whacking off.

GravatarWasn't Katrina the pivot revealing the total destruction of response agencies (cough FEMA) since Bushco took over?

GravatarJesus Fucking Christ. And he wants to be president. He just solidified himself as "Bush pt. II, The Evil Years"

And the question was 3, not 4.

Gravatarmccain: break the backs of the unions!

GravatarAnd, might I add, fuck CNN for elevating this douchebaggery to the level they have.

GravatarZbig has boasted about luring the Russians into Afghanistan and starting US support of the "mujadeen". And the US under Carter supported Savak and the Shah until they fell- the Embassy was seized while Carter was in office.

Fuck you.

GravatarPUMA = DINO.

GravatarThank you so much, Brooklyn Girl.

GravatarJohn McCain sodomized my Loatian mother while fucking his American mother.

GravatarRonald Reagan won the Cold War without firing a shot.

Gravatarhe wants every american to have the same choice in schools he and cindy had for their kids.

LIAR.

or, totally deluded nitwit.

GravatarIf you want to send your kids to private school, you're not going to do it on my dime. Home-schooling does not work.

GravatarI am sure the McCain's had difficulty in choosing which school their children would attend. Pathetic.

GravatarI'm not religious, but I have faith that even with this bonus applause track, McStain is not making the hay he thinks he is with the American electorate. This was a sucker play for him, to have it on ABC.

GravatarSC Justices: Ginsburg, Breyer, Souter, and Stevens. YOu know, activist liberals.
Deacon Blues

Poppy Bush is still kicking himself in the ass over Souter.

GravatarFuck you.

GravatarAnd, might I add, fuck CNN for elevating this douchebaggery to the level they have.
Seraphiel

I'm not even watching and am completely appalled.

I think I'd have a hemorrhage if I were watching it.

Gravatarso, is mccain for raising taxes to the level that every school has the same budget his kids $75k/year elementary school went to?

Gravatar"... and I don't want to hear your stump speech on education..." I don't
think it was Warren who fed him the questions. If Warren was honest when he said that McCain was in a "cone of silence" he must be thinking about who on his staff leaked.

Tralfaz | 08.16.08 - 9:34 pm

Not even.

PUMA = Republican concern trolls, a jack sockpuppet saying it's a Democrat, but...

GravatarI wonder why the game wasn't listed on the online NFL Preseason schedule?

Gravatar"i don't want to take money from the rich, i want everyone to be rich"

sorry, you don't understand the concept of "rich"

GravatarGIVE UP ALL YOUR MILLIONS THEN, ASSHOLE!!!

GravatarPublic schools are failing because of the subhumans who drop their squeezings off on the rest of us and do nothing to instill discipline at home.

Fuck libtard edu-crats.

Gravataris little ricky going to let him duck the "define rich with a number" question....

Gravatar$5 million.

Gravatar"so, is mccain for raising taxes to the level that every school has the same budget his kids $75k/year elementary school went to?"
--dirk gently

Of course not.

GravatarMeanwhile all of America watches and is taken aback.

More of america is watching a sporting event of one stripe or another than is watching the Steeplechase Quiz Show.

GravatarRich starts at $5 million

GravatarI gots me a name-stealer.

GravatarRich is $5 Mil. Ha Ha Ha...

Gravatarat what point does a baby get human rights?

Zygotes, blastocysts, embryos and fetuses are not babies.

The woman's rights come first.

GravatarI think I'd have a hemorrhage if I were watching it.

Me too.

Dallas at Denver for me.

Gravatarmccain: break the backs of the unions!

I'm old enough to remember when Christianity was all about helping those less fortunate than yourself.

My fundie co-workers' biggest mission is to keep halfway houses from opening in her neighborhood.
She even campaigned against a house for battered women.
I loathe her.

GravatarAnd those of us without children?

What about a cat credit?

Gravatarspent money on the war....
10 billion a month

GravatarMy friends. My friends.
