Wow, Faux really blew it here, bringing in a 12 year old Ossetian girl "hero" to talk about how bad the Russian aggression was, first-hand, only to have the girl stop the flow of the interview and point out that her ordeal was caused by Georgian troops, and she thanks the Russians who helped her escape.

irony - Canada is mounting an expedition to find the remains of the 1845 British attempt to find the Northwest Passage. The ships Erebus and Terror were trapped in ice and Sir John Franklin and his crew of 128 died.
Global warming has opened up the region and Canada is sending a team to survey an area south of King William Island. Frozen corpses, believed to be those of members of the expedition, have been found in the area. 'Canada will embark on its own search, which has the allure of an Indiana Jones mystery,' said environment minister John Baird. This year's search will last six weeks and will be followed by further explorations in 2009 and 2010 if need be.

It was supposed to be just another federal drug prosecution. The federal prosecutors introduced evidence that the man on trial was involved in the black market drug trade. The defense attorney said the government agents entrapped his client. And then the twelve citizen-jurors retired to deliberate the outcome of the case.
But then something unusual happened. The jury sent a note to the trial judge with the following query: Since the Constitution needed to be amended in 1919 to authorize federal criminal prosecutions for manufacturing and smuggling alcohol, a juror wanted to know from the judge where “is the constitutional grant of authority to ban mere possession of cocaine today?”
When the jury sent out more notes about a juror that wasn’t going to sign off on an unconstitutional prosecution, Young halted the proceedings to identify the ”problem juror.” Once discovered, that juror was replaced with an alternate–over the objections of defense counsel. Shortly thereafter, the new jury returned with guilty verdicts on several cocaine-related charges.

Global warming has opened up the region and Canada is sending a team to survey an area south of King William Island. Frozen corpses, believed to be those of members of the expedition, have been found in the area.
I knew someone who participated in this excavation ...
After obtaining legal permission,[50] Beattie's team visited Beechey Island in August 1984 to perform autopsies on the three crewmen buried there.[51] They started with the first crew member to die, Leading Stoker John Shaw Torrington. After completing Torrington's autopsy and exhuming and briefly examining the body of John Hartnell, the team, pressed for time and threatened by the weather, returned to Edmonton with tissue and bone samples.[52] Trace element analysis of Torrington's bones and hair indicated that the crewman "would have suffered severe mental and physical problems caused by lead poisoning".[53] Although the autopsy indicated that pneumonia had been the ultimate cause of the crewman's death, lead poisoning was cited as a contributing factor.[54]
During the expedition, the team visited a place about 1 kilometre (0.6 mi) north of the grave site to examine fragments of hundreds of food tins discarded by the Franklin's men. Beattie noted that the seams were poorly soldered with lead, which had likely come in direct contact with the food.[55][56] The release of findings from the 1984 expedition and the photo of Torrington, a 138 year-old corpse well preserved by permafrost in the tundra, led to wide media coverage and renewed interest in the lost Franklin expedition.

Goal is: how do we reduce the number of abortions?
Thanks. I so enjoy being part of your systematic concern. It's done so well by me over the years. How do 'we' reduce the number of abortions?
What's it to you, buddy? How do WE reduce the number of times YOU decide to make babies? Or war for that matter. How do WE keep you from such a desperate path?
Enough. Patronisation is what it is. I've heard enough.

The Great Gazoo is a character from The Flintstones animated series. He first appeared on the show on October 29, 1965. He has many similarities to Mr. Mxyzptlk of the Superman comics, and may have been inspired by him. He is a tiny, green, floating alien, voiced by Harvey Korman, having been exiled to Earth from his home planet Zatox as punishment for having invented a doomsday machine, a weapon of immense destructive power, and was discovered by Fred and Barney when his flying saucer crashed.

150k is just a boring professional salary. It's what people get paid after they attend university for 6-8 years. These people have a little bit bigger house, maybe a time-share vacation home and boat, the ability to pay for their kids to go to college, and maybe an extra car but they work just as hard or even harder than everyone else. Via a commenter at Sinfonian's place this morning, here's an article from Phillip Butler, a fellow Vietnam War POW of McMaverick's who will NOT be voting for him. It was an interesting perspective, one that gets little airing (same as usual).
As you might expect, there was much displeasure in comments over there.

I agree. I think the intended audiences are the self-described communities of evangelicals plus the media. It serves as an opportunity for Obama to distance himself from the "secular left," who would be watching, I guess, if they're campaign junkies -- I mean, if they existed as a bloc, at all.

fear for his nominations to our Supreme Court, and the consequent continuing loss of individual freedoms, especially regarding moral and religious issues. John is not a religious person, but he has taken every opportunity to ally himself with some really obnoxious and crazy fundamentalist ministers lately. I was also disappointed to see him cozy up to Bush because I know he hates that man. He disingenuously and famously put his arm around the guy, even after Bush had intensely disrespected him with lies and slander. So on these and many other instances, I don't see that John is the "straight talk express"
john mccain, panderer in chief.
actually, much to my surprise, i think he might be worse than bush.

Where is Joe Lieberman? Where is Lindsay Grahm? My friends are gone. Oh wait, I sent them to Georgia. Okay, now my second wife,Cindy, has something special to say. We must destroy Russia and Asia. Therefore, we must destroy China and Russia. Bad Cindy, Bad Cindy.
McCain: I am very saddened that Russia has decided to take Georgia which is a Christian nation. Therefore, we must destroy not only Russia but China as my wife pointed out earlier.
