Funny how an old Republican operative like Woodward pretends he never heard of it.
Caging, however, isn't as despicable as the more common tactic of 1 polling place per 1000 in white areas and 1 polling place per 10,000 in minority areas.
Democrats could counter caging by paying the 30 or 40 cent (is it more?) address correction and gettin their registration updated.

Caging is a voter suppression tactic whereby a political campaign sends mail marked “do not forward” to a targeted group of eligible voters. A more aggressive version involves sending mail to a targeted group of voters with instructions to sign and return an acknowledgment card. The campaign then creates a list of those whose mail was returned undelivered and challenges the right of those citizens to vote — on the ground that the voter does not live at the registered address.
So if I don't resond to a Republican mailer I'm committing voter fraud?

Wherever rats appear they bring ruin, by destroying mankind's goods and foodstuffs.
Wo Ratten auch auftauchen, tragen sie Vernichtung ins Land, zerstören sie menschliche Güter und Nahrungsmittel.
In this way, they (the rats) spread disease, plague, leprosy, typhoid fever, cholera, dysentery, and so on.
Auf diese Weise verbreiten sie (die Ratten) Krankheiten, Pest, Lepra, Typhus, Cholera, Ruhr u.s.w.
They are cunning, cowardly, and cruel, and are found mostly in large packs. Among the animals, they represent the rudiment of an insidious and underground destruction -
Sie sind hinterlistig, feige und grausam und treten meist in grossen Scharen auf. Sie stellen unter den Tieren das Element der heimtückischen, unterirdischen Zerstörung dar -

Attack at Pet Market Kills 13
Fish tanks lay where they had exploded into the faces peering into them, twisted birdcages were hurled across the street and human and animal blood was being hosed off the streets by well-practiced firefighters.
When the smoke cleared from Baghdad’s worst bombing in months, the Iraqi police said 13 people were dead and 57 wounded, although the American military put the death toll at eight. Witnesses told the police that two homemade bombs were hidden inside a bird-box, with air holes drilled through its sides.

A treasure trove of guerrilla documents, according to the NYT, shows that 41% of the foreign jihadis in Iraq come from Saudi Arabia, which is also a major source of funding for them. Another big group comes from Libya, with Yemenis the third largest cohort. There were none from Lebanon, despite constant US accusations of Hizbullah involvement. Of the some 25,000 alleged insurgents in US custody in Iraq, only 390 are foreigners. 4/5s of the Iraqis and nearly all the foreigners are Sunni Arabs. (The US appears to have never captured a Shiite Iranian fighter in Iraq.) The statistics raise the question of why US military officials are always focusing on Iran and Hizbullah so much, when they clearly are not very much of the problem, while never, ever, mentioning the Saudi issue.

Indonesia has a "culture of impunity" in the face of ill-treatment and torture, a senior UN official has said.
Manfred Nowak, special rapporteur on torture, has spent two weeks inspecting the country's prisons and police and military detention centres.
Mr Nowak said he found evidence of detainees being electrocuted, suffering systematic beatings and even being shot in the legs at close range.
He called on the government to make torture a separate crime under the law.
The BBC's Lucy Williamson, in Jakarta, says Indonesia has regularly come under scrutiny for its human rights record. Mr Nowak's visit is the third by a UN human rights monitor this year.

Authorities in the Brazilian Amazon have come under fire after reports that a 16-year-old girl was repeatedly raped and tortured while being held in a prison cell with at least 20 men.
According to reports in the Brazilian press, the teenager was arrested last month after being caught stealing in Abaetetuba, a town on the outskirts of Belem, the capital of the Amazon state Para.
She reportedly spent 26 days in a cell at the local police station, although no formal charges were brought. This week the girl emerged from custody, covered in bruises and cigarette burns.
The state governor, Ana Julia Carepa, ordered an immediate inquiry following claims that the teenager had been locked up with the male prisoners for at least a month and forced to have sex in exchange for food.
Carepa told the Estado news agency there were signs that the girl had been deliberately imprisoned in order for other prisoners to sexually exploit her. On Thursday four policemen were suspended.
"It does not matter if she is 15, 20, 50 or 80 years old. A woman should not be held in a cell together with men," the governor said.
The regional human rights representative of Brazil's Lawyers Association, Mary Cohen, said she believed the girl had been subjected to "every imaginable type of physical and sexual aggression."

Taliban fighters have killed an Australian soldier in close-quarters fighting in Afghanistan.
The Australian defence force said 26-year-old Private Luke Worsley was shot dead during several hours of intense fighting aimed at disrupting bomb-makers in the southern province of Uruzgan.
Angus Houston, a spokesman for the Australian military in Sydney, said: "During this engagement the Taliban sustained heavy casualties, including a number killed and a substantial number detained."
It is the third death among the 900 Australians in the Nato-led International Security Assistance Force (Isaf).
Isaf said two women and a child were also killed in Friday's early morning clashes but it was not clear how they had died.
Fathers' groups said the ruling treated the child as the property of the mother "to be disposed of as she sees fit".

UK taxpayers could have gained "more money" from the privatisation of defence research firm Qinetiq, the National Audit Office (NAO) has said.
While saying taxpayers could have gained "tens of millions" more, the NAO also condemned an incentive scheme that netted fortunes for Qinetiq's bosses.
The government defended the sale and said it was excellent value for money.
But Lord Moonie, the minister behind the original sale to a US buyout firm, said that he had tried to delay it.
He was a defence minister in 2003 when a third of Qinetiq was sold to the US private equity group, Carlyle, for Ł42m.
Stock markets had slumped and Lord Moonie felt that the Ministry of Defence (MOD) would not receive a decent price for its shareholding, said BBC business editor Robert Peston.

Some of the best fun I have ever had involved standing outside sex shops, taking photographs of men entering the premises and then shouting at them when they came out. There have been other joys too, like pouring cement down the toilet of a cinema that screened nasty pornography. And then there was the time when I and a few fellow feminists spray-painted half of Yorkshire warning that rapists would be castrated.
Public protest and direct action like this is not as popular as it once was. But we may be set for a revival. The annual Reclaim the Night march, which celebrates its 30th anniversary when it takes place in London tomorrow, is enjoying a surge of interest, probably due to the horrifying UK rape statistics released recently. The organisers say they have received a flurry of calls from women keen to take part.
Hurrah, say I: but why ever did in-your-face feminists go so quiet? Earlier this year, the BBC screened The Verdict, a controversial programme in which 12 celebrities formed the jury in a fictional rape case. Several feminists wrote to the BBC to complain, and dozens blogged their protest about how the programme trivialised rape. But where was the direct action?

Questions were being asked tonight about the seaworthiness of a cruise liner that had to be evacuated as it began to sink after hitting an iceberg in the Antarctic Ocean.
Two inspections earlier this year found 11 deficiencies with the ship, called the M/S Explorer, which is sinking near the South Shetland Islands, south of Argentina.
All 154 passengers and crew abandoned the 2,400-tonne vessel, which is listing 30 degrees to starboard, and were transferred to a rescue vessel, the Nord Norge, via life rafts.
One maritime expert said the incident raised concerns about the growing trend to run cruises "in increasingly exotic and remote locations, often in inherently dangerous conditions".
"There are many questions about the suitability of some ships to operate in such potentially adverse conditions, often well away from adequate search-and-rescue cover," said Mark Dickinson, assistant general secretary of the maritime union Nautilus UK.
Gordon Brown's electoral advantage for Labour has been wiped out as the party's support drops to the same lows it endured during Tony Blair's final months in government, a Guardian/ICM poll reveals tonight.
The survey, taken as the prime minister faces serious questions about the competence of his administration in the wake of Northern Rock and the lost child benefit records fiasco, shows that the "Brown bounce" of early summer has fallen away entirely.
But the results contain warnings for the Conservatives too, suggesting they have failed to take advantage of Brown's most recent woes, that voters are yet to be convinced by David Cameron, and that there remains a powerful anti-Tory majority in the electorate.
Both major parties slumped in this week's poll but the Conservatives extended their lead by one point, because their support fell by one point less than Labour. The Tories are on 37% (down three points) and Labour are on 31% (down four).
Bishop Antoine Audo SJ is to visit London to call for urgent assistance for Iraqi Christians who are now refugees in Syria.
Bishop Audo, who is based in Aleppo, is responsible for Syria’s Chaldean Catholic community. There has been a huge rise in the Chaldean population in Syria since the US-led invasion in 2003.
At 12 midday on Thursday, 29 November, he and Suha Rassam, author of Christianity in Iraq, will be giving a press conference at the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, 39 Eccleston Square, SW1.
The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has reported that 44% of asylum seekers reaching Syria since their register started in 2003 are Christians, despite the fact that Christians form only 4% of the Iraqi population.
Many families live in overcrowded conditions and have lost their livelihoods. Some rely on help from family members abroad; others meagre state rations.
Before the invasion, Iraq’s Christian population was estimated to be around 800,000, the majority living in Baghdad or in and around Mosul in the north. But bombings, violence, kidnappings, and threats have forced many to flee.
I'm all for that. The Catholic Church is the source of some fabulous music, but all you hear these days are shitty modern hymns. The Episcopal/Anglican churches took over all the good music.

While the attention of the Afghan government and the media is focused on major battles in the south of the country, the Taliban are making major headway in a northern region.
Badghis, a north-western province wedged between Herat and Faryab, has been the scene of heavy fighting for the past two months, and the insurgents have occupied three of the province's seven districts. They have also established intelligence and operational networks in most district centers.
This was the first of the north-western provinces to fall to the Taliban in 1997. Now the insurgents are looking to repeat their earlier success, using Badghis as a launch pad for operations in the provinces further east, which include Jowzjan, Balkh, Takhar and Badakhshan.
In Faryab, directly to the north of Badghis, the Taliban have established a foothold in mountainous areas, and are trying to expand their networks there as well. The Taliban have launched several sorties in both provinces in the past two months and claim that the Bala Murghab, Ghormach and Qades districts of Badghis are largely in their hands.

KABUL, Nov. 23, 2007 (Xinhua) -- The Taliban insurgents recaptured Gulistan district of western Afghan Farah province Friday, provincial governor Mohaidin Baloch said.
While confirming the news with Xinhua, the governor said the government forces have moved out of the district to prevent war with the militants and the ensuing civilian casualties and property damage.
The past several weeks have witnessed the repeatedly change of control over Gulistan between the local government and the militants.
Rising militancy-related violent incidents have killed over 5,800 people so far this year in the war-torn Afghanistan.
The Taliban, removed from power by the U.S. invasion in late 2001, has waged insurgency against Afghan administration and the international troops deployed in the country.

Good evening.
I did my patriotic duty today by working.
And I came home and watched a Dan Fogelberg video.
Iraq's IAEA Ambassador Tariq Aqrawi has urged world powers especially the West to respect Iran's important status in the Middle East.
Western powers should admit Iran plays an effective role in the volatile region, the envoy said in an interview with the IRNA in Vienna.
"Iran is not Iraq and its condition is not comparable to that of Iraq before the American invasion," Aqrawi said regarding the US war threats.
He described Iran's growing cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency as a step toward resolving the country's standoff with the West through a diplomatic approach.
"As a member to IAEA and NPT, Iran has an inalienable right to use civilian nuclear energy," the official concluded.
Actually it's a crying shame that it comes to this to prevent this asshole from fucking up the country even worse.

Moorer. Toward the end of his naval service he had his first chance meetings with Mark Felt ("Deep Throat"), later his inside source for information leading to his reporting on the Watergate scandal.

Tens of thousands of people are being moved from their homes in the Philippines as emergency crews prepare for the oncoming Typhoon Mitag.
The storm, packing 175km/h (109mph) winds, is expected to strike in the Bicol region on Saturday and could hit the capital, Manila, the following day.
Officials fear the typhoon could cause lethal mudslides in some areas.
Meanwhile, Vietnam is bracing itself for Typhoon Hagibis, which left 13 dead in the Philippines earlier this week.

Barndog,
Actually, I am not really sure of the allegiance, but my school district and the Benton Harbor School District do some things together. I have met with their teachers and administrators on a number of occasions to discuss the similarities of our situations. My district has to deal with the (essentially) all white school district adjacent to us.
It is a capsulized version of what we in the North do about racial segregation. Ostensibly we have none: there are certainly no laws against it, but what happens is that the white citizens move into areas of higher home values where poor (mostly black) citizens cannot follow.
The schools are left with no tax base and at the mercy of the state funding formulas and so on.
Benton Harbor has St. Joseph. Muskegon Heights has Norton Shores. Same thing, different cities.

Nov. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Major League Baseball pitcher Joe Kennedy died at his Florida home Friday morning, ESPN reported, citing the player's agent, Damon Lapa. He was 28.
The cause of Kennedy's death hasn't been determined, ESPN said.
Kennedy was released by the Toronto Blue Jays in October. He compiled 43 wins and 61 losses in seven major league seasons. He'd also played for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Colorado Rockies, Oakland Athletics and Arizona Diamondbacks.
Calls to the Major League Baseball Players Association were not immediately returned. Toronto Blue Jays spokesman Jay Stenhouse couldn't confirm the report.

dollars to student is sometimes an unrealistic stat. Does a school district have expensive real estate for example?
One of the big costs in education is Special Ed. It is important but very expensive. Some districts basically screw special needs kids over. No speech pathologists, no physical therapist.
They spend less per student, but it's a bit misleading. When you look at actual money spent in a regular ed classroom, the numbers change.

Marcy Wheeler on Scotty's *ho-hum* "bombshell":
Now, don't get me wrong. I'd love to have Congress look at the evidence that Bush (and, more importantly, Cheney) were directly involved in Valerie Wilson's outing the cover-up of that outing. I'm thrilled if folks can force Scottie into the uncomfortable position of testifying before Congress about what he knows--using his book as an excuse to overcome any privilege claims. And if this can help Joe and Valerie get their lawsuit back on track, all the better.
But if anyone is going to do some investigating, they should do so on the premise that Scottie's book is one weak piece of evidence--from among a sea of much stronger evidence--that Cheney, at least, was involved in the leaking of Valerie Wilson's identity and the cover-up of that leak. We're not going to get Bush until we go through Cheney, anyway, and with Cheney, there is already clear evidence of his foreknowledge and involvement, which we don't have with Bush, probably not even if Scottie testifies.
And for chrissake, can we avoid playing into the publicist's game and making Scottie a mint off of this?

Hecate posted this poem a few years back... I don't know that it's what you're looking for (what could be?) but I think it's a fine "Thanksgiving" poem, nonetheless.
Sometimes
Sometimes things don't go, after all,
from bad to worse. Some years, muscadel
faces down frost; green thrives; the crops don't fail.
Sometimes a man aims high, and all goes well.
A people sometimes will step back from war,
elect an honest man, decide they care
enough, that they can't leave some stranger poor.
Some men become what they were born for.
Sometimes our best intentions do not go
amiss; sometimes we do as we meant to.
The sun will sometimes melt a field of sorrow
that seemed hard frozen; may it happen for you.
Looks like mom decorated her basement in purple.

On Iraq, a State of Denial
By Charles Krauthammer
Friday, November 23, 2007; Page A39
It does not have the drama of the Inchon landing or the sweep of the Union comeback in the summer of 1864. But the turnabout of American fortunes in Iraq over the past several months is of equal moment -- a war seemingly lost, now winnable. The violence in Iraq has been dramatically reduced. Political allegiances have been radically reversed. The revival of ordinary life in many cities is palpable. Something important is happening.
And what is the reaction of the war critics? Nancy Pelosi stoutly maintains her state of denial, saying this about the war just two weeks ago: "This is not working. . . . We must reverse it." res,I am hearing stories like that more and more often. Lotta guys gonna spit, scratch their balls, hike up their belts, walk into the voting booth and vote for HIl, walk out, fire up the truck, and go get a beer. Just watch.
And, somehow, in the morning, their dicks will still work and America will have moved past one more hurdle.

Diebold says otherwise... we don't need truth anymore. The media will spin its lie and the ballot counter will shape reality as neocons see fit.
She'll win, they'll have enough votes to block via Senate, and enough Gov.s will steal races to screw her over in swing regions just enough to keep from moving forward.
Papa Lou Dobbs will help...

The point is that the subprime crisis and the credit crunch are, in an important sense, the result of our failure to effectively reform corporate governance after the last set of scandals.
John Edwards recently came out with a corporate reform plan, but it didn’t receive a lot of attention. Corporate governance still isn’t regarded as a major political issue. But it should be.

I'm about to try lard.
V for Virginia, hearbroken
Before you go there, see if you can find a european butter. It has a higher butterfat content than domestic butter and makes a wicked good -- and easy -- piecrust.

It's America! Even a poor black boy can grow up to become a rich white woman.
Just ask Michael Jackson.

Hecate: that was I, and, as always, anything I say that's worth stealing is out there for free. And it's still true. They impeached Clinton over lying about a blowjob. They Whitewatered for years, with nothing whatever to show for it save the sixteen volumes still available on the subject from the WSJ editorial page. They Osama'd Max Cleland, swiftboated Kerry, Vince Fostered Hillary, outed Valerie Plame. A complete list would bore the crap out of everybody.
So it's a fight, unless, of course, we just give in on everything. Obama, therefore, loses me on this one.

Half butter, half lard. It's "crumbly" rather than flakey, but it's a damn tasty shortcrust.
JR, kerosene and a match
Hmmmmm. Maybe I'll try that. Lard is just about the last thing I need to have on hand, but maybe if I only use it for the (very rare) crusts it won't hasten my demise too much . . .

Ron Paul isn't just against "empire." He's a true isolationist.
Which is just plain stoopid.

Sigh. He's a Republican. When he gets something right, it is a miracle. But he is right about the war and the war state.

Clever in some ways, but they are easily baited.
We used to joke that half the 11 year old girls online were actually FBI agents.

An owl's sillouhette against the full November moon.
Never -- I'd rather have the concentrated cholesterol in the lard than the trans-fats in the shortening.
flory -- I think they have some Danish butter at Publix -- I could try that.

Pie crust? For the few I make, I use the dreaded Crisco. But I mean, eating one or two a year is not going to kill you I don't think.
2/3 cups of shortening
2 cups of flour
cut with a pastry cutter for a ridiculously long time.
add water until you make a lump the size of a good softball out of it. Cut it in half, roll it out and put in a well-greased pie pan. Insert filling. Roll out the rest of it. Cover it up, pinch it together and bake it. Looks like this: http://img.photobucket.com/album...as20001/

I would suggest that, if you're really going to vote for the first time ever, you educate yourself.
NTodd, Boxer-Briefed
you're not the boss of me.
and i already voted for the first time. and one of the reasons i waited so long was because millions of people go to elections each year with no idea what they are doing. i follow it a lot more closeley than most.
i'm well aware there is much more than a dimes worth of difference between rep. and dem. when i say republican i mean sell america off to the highest bidder. and bill did that, or didn't do enough to stop it from happening.
i'm voting for obama. hillary if she gets the nod.
