Two other movies that I've seen recently are
The Vistor, which was really lovely and involves cross culture concern for others and just last night I saw
"Music and Lyrics". M and L was very fun. It was light and a perfect video rental. It stars Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant. He plays a former Pop star and she plays an lyricist.
What I liked about it is how it addresses both "high" culture and "low" culture. An attitude that serious writing is better than the writing of a great lyric in a song.
I think I need to remember this.
It's like the great movie Sullivan's Travels (as referenced in the movie Grand Canyon). The whole issue of what gives people joy and happiness. There are places for both kind of work. Comedy and drama.
Most of my life I've looked to comedy because I was pretty good at it, but it didn't get respect so you go for the serious stuff and try and damp down the comedy because it isn't respected. This same theme was addressed in Woody Allen's "Stardust Memories" movies.
I wonder. Do serious people desire to be funny the same way that funny people sometime desire to be serious?
