New biography of shadowy Iraq figure Chalabi recalls ties to McCain
Regarding McCain, Roston adds that he was "Chalabi's favored candidate in the 2000 election since Chalabi knew that he would be able to free up the $97 million in military aid plus millions pushed through in Congress
They already corrected the oopsie that had one paragraph listing the D ahead and the other saying it was the R. Regrettably enough it was the latter that was correct. But that's 16 out of 200+ precints reporting.
Didn't hastert need like 2 or 3 seats?

I was looking into the origin of "suiting to a t", and the speculations are interesting. The most candidate is that it came for "suiting to a tittle", tittle being the name for the dot over the letter i in old-style printing. So it's something tiny.

the igit in chief doesn't like homework.
Other provisions of the bill purport to require the executive branch to submit information to the Congress that may be constitutionally protected from disclosure, including information the disclosure of which could impair foreign relations, the national security, the deliberative processes of the Executive, or the performance of the Executive's constitutional duties. Section 326, for example, would require that the executive branch report, on a very short deadline and in accordance with a rigid set of specific statutory requirements, the details of highly classified interrogation techniques and the confidential legal advice concerning them. The executive branch voluntarily has provided much of this information to appropriate members of Congress, demonstrating that questions concerning access to such information are best addressed through the customary practices and arrangements between the executive and legislative branches on such matters, rather than through the enactment of legislation.

To start a hop garden you need female hop rhizomes, the bud-producing runners from which the plants grow. Until recently they were hard to come by. You either had to know someone who had them or cut a deal with a commercial grower to acquire them. Oh, some garden and nursery supply places might sell you an ornamental vine, but you never knew what variety it would turn out to be or even if it was usable for brewing

Hey, here's a great idea: a Florida GOP legislator is looking into whether the state can bar the Dem candidate from the ballot in November if Florida's delegates to the DNC aren't seated.
I rest my case.
See, this is all to preserve Floridians' franchise by denying them a choice because the Democrats didn't quite let them choose.

Gaping Hole Found in Universe http://www.howstuffworks.com/
fra...article8598.htm
Astronomers have found a giant "hole" in the universe that measures nearly a billion light-year across. The large galactic void is empty of galaxies, stars, dust clouds and, oddly enough, even dark matter. The discovery has left scientists clambering for a plausible explanation, however, as of right now one hasn't arisen. Scientists claim that a galactic void this large is far from a normal occurrence.
The region was intially discovered by NASA's Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) Satellite. At that time, scientists had no idea that it would turn out to be a giant space void.
The WMAP satellite measures the temperature of cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) over the entire sky. CMB radiation is a form of electromagnetic radiation that fills the entire universe and can be detected in all regions of space. This radiation is remnant heat from the Big Bang and is very cold, measuring just 2.725° above absolute zero.
On the map of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation produced by the WMAP satellite, the void came up as a cold spot. Since the temperature of CMB radiation is quite uniform in all of space, scientists already knew there was something special about the region. Lead researcher Lawrence Rudnick of the University of Minnesota said "we already knew there was something different about this spot." Due to its cooler appearance on the CMB Map, the void was dubbed the "WMAP Cold Spot."

I thought the main point of the movie seemed to be to prove that Daniel Day Lewis can act -- which we all knew, but I did think it was a better movie (qua movie) than "No Country for Old Men" but the Academy did not agree
Seriously, I think a lot of the critics missed a lot of what was going on in "There Will Be Blood" & I prefer it to "Citizen Kane," but what do you expect from a person whose favorite movie is "Lonestar"?

This is a little oversimplified, but the legislature mandated Jan. 29 for both parties. Even though the DNC said that was against their rules, the state Dems decided to go along with it, given that they didn't really have much other choice in the matter.

I wonder if Edwards and Obama knew that at the time. It's nasty, but brilliant. If Dean backed down, the Rethugs would have been able to say, "See, we made the DNC do what we wanted." If not, we're in the situation we have now--"The Dems want to deprive Americans of their votes." Either way--Rethugs 1, Dems 0. Did Dean know this? Campaign 2008: 14th Congressional District
Foster wins Hastert's seat
By James Kimberly
Tribune reporter
9:07 PM CST, March 8, 2008
Update: In a stunning upset Saturday that could be a harbinger of trouble for the GOP this fall, a little-known Democratic physicist won the special election for a seat drawn to re-elect former Republican House Speaker Dennis Hastert.
Bill Foster defeated Republican Jim Oberweis, who lost his fourth high-profile election in six years, following an expensive and highly negative contest.
The win gives Democrats another House seat until at least the end of the year. It also could serve as an omen for November, when two other Illinois congressional seats are up for grabs following Republican retirements and Sen. Barack Obama could bring out a huge turnout if he's the Democratic presidential nominee.
Foster won with 52 percent to Oberweis' 48 percent with nearly all of the unofficial vote counted late Saturday.

Foster was born in 1955 in Madison, Wisconsin and received his BA in Physics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1975 and his Ph.D. in Physics from Harvard University in 1984. He has been elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society, was on the team receiving the 1989 Rossi Prize for Cosmic Ray Physics for the discovery of the neutrino burst from Supernova SN 1987A, received the Particle Accelerator Technology Prize from the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, and was awarded an Energy Conservation award from the U.S. Department of Energy for his invention and application of permanent magnets for Fermilab's accelerators.[2]
Foster's business career began at age 19, when he and his younger brother Fred Foster, started a company in their basement with $500 from their parents. The business, Electronic Theatre Controls (ETC), now has over 500 employees and manufactures over half of the theater lighting equipment in the United States. Installations include Broadway shows, Rolling Stones tours, Opera houses, half-time shows for the Super Bowl, and at schools, churches, and community centers across the United States.[3]
After completing his Ph.D., Foster moved to the Fox Valley with his family to pursue a career in high-energy physics at Fermilab, a national laboratory which is home to the Tevatron, a powerful particle accelerator. During his 22 years at Fermilab he participated in several notable projects, including the design of equipment and data analysis software for the CDF Detector, which were used in the discovery of the top quark, and the management of the design and construction of a 3km Anti-Proton Recycler Ring for the Main Injector.[4] [5]

During a recent TV appearance, Foster said he would be a ''good vote in Congress to change President Bush's policy'' on Iraq. Oberweis contended the troop surge there was working, saying: ''Things are getting better in Iraq.''
Oberweis also has blasted Foster for being a proponent of big government because Foster says he wants to move toward universal health care. Foster claims Oberweis' approach -- he favors tax incentives to help people buy their own insurance -- only works for people who are ''healthy and wealthy.''

Well, there's scientific literacy, which has been altogether too much to expect from anybody in government over the past seven years, though it shouldn't be. To have a PhD physicist in Congress, now that's a whole 'nother level of things. It might prove interesting, even entertaining...
Wouldn't it be entertaining for him to get up on the house floor and tell the rethugs that they're fucking morons when they start their "global warming is scary!!" nonsense?

Ah yes, here's his bio: Rep. Holt earned his B.A. in Physics from Carleton College in Minnesota and completed his Master’s and Ph.D. at NYU. He has held positions as a teacher, Congressional Science Fellow, and arms control expert at the U.S. State Department where he monitored the nuclear programs of countries such as Iraq, Iran, North Korea, and the former Soviet Union. From 1989 until he launched his 1998 congressional campaign, Holt was Assistant Director of the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, the largest research facility of Princeton University and the largest center for research in alternative energy in New Jersey. He has conducted extensive research on alternative energy and has his own patent for a solar energy device. Holt was also a five-time winner of the game show “Jeopardy.”

Bill Foster earned a Ph.D. in theoretical particle physics from Harvard. Dumb he ain't.
Unfortunately, as I mentioned a few threads back, we have to do this all over again in November. However, my guess is that Foster wins by an even larger margin then.
This, Hastert's, was a very Red district. That the GOP lost this one is the canary in the coal mine. They are in serious, serious trouble.

I don't think Harvard is exactly known for their physics program. None of my physicist friends ever talked about it.

Rep. Vernon J. Ehlers (R-MI) is also a physicist.
Don't know how up to date he is since he's been in Congress since 1993.
Also he belongs to the Christian Reformed Church which still has severe doubts about evolution - to the point that their flagship college, Calvin in GR, almost lost its accreditation a few years ago when the trustees wanted to forbid all mention of evolution and Darwin by any of their professors.
