GravatarWoo-hoo!

Gravatar1.5 million donors, baby.

GravatarIran on Thursday refuted the US media for desperate attempts to link Iran to the terrorist attacks in Iraq.

"The US has given refuge to terrorist Mujahideen Khalq Organization (MKO) on one hand and its media are misleading the public opinion by linking Iran to the terrorist bombings in Iraq, on the other," Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad-Ali Hosseini said. (MKO is a strange, cult-like Iranian opposition group that for decades has been allowed a base in Iraq, has long been on the State Department list of terrorist organizations. The U.S. has supported MKO since its invasion of Iraq. - S)

He said that the desperate attempts made by the US media aimed at justifying prolongation of occupation and sow discord between the Iranian and Iraqi governments and nations have failed so far.

weird that I could be a news junkie and miss this story - not a lot of traction I guess

GravatarDammit, I had to stop and think of something on topic to say rather than just grabbing the first.

Gravatarwhy, I think I shall.

GravatarSmall donor model works, but I don't think it obviates the need for regulation when there are powerful monied interests still around.

GravatarI think someone should regulate the use of the word "Obviate".

GravatarHere is the real problem facing America: the NYT had a front page story today that mentioned bacon in the hed and we've heard NOT ONE PEEP from Thers.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/2...sq=bacon& st=cse

GravatarI had the FDA and Agriculture Dept. had more inspectors and better regs, myself.

GravatarLimit it to $100 dollars, period.

GravatarI think someone should regulate the use of the word "Obviate".

Its a useful word tho.

GravatarI think somebody should regulate monads.

GravatarTo condemn the campaign’s departure from the system is to elevate rules over the principle that gave birth to the rules in the first place.

But Scott Simon told me Obama made a solemn pledge! And that's the kind that's unbreakable! Except in the case of divorce or something where, you know, solemn pledges aren't really serious. Like business, and contracts, and things like that. And besides, McCain is taking public funds again, after he took a solemn pledge not to! Oh, wait, that wasn't a solemn pledge. But he was out before he was in, and he was in after Obama was out, so Obama should stay in, because signing any questionnaire is a solemn pledge!

'Course, he doesn't put his hand over his heart, either, or wear a flag pin often enough, or....Well, I'm sure Scott Simon could straigthen this out.....

GravatarLimit it to $100 dollars, period.

Then you owe me a refund, motherfucker!

GravatarGood article by Wilkinson. How on earth did a real journalist get into the Times?

GravatarGeez. Um, *wish*, I mean.

GravatarRussia 1 - 1 Netherlands!

GravatarWell, I'm sure Scott Simon could straigthen this out.....

It's turtles all the way down.

GravatarI think somebody should regulate monads.

First we have to give them windows, so we can see what's going on in there.

And to make 'em crash once in a while. And learn to limp along from update to update.

GravatarThen you owe me a refund, motherfucker!

GravatarI think a lot of the whining about Obama's choice for campaign finance is it's clear he's playing to win and the they all want '00 '04 redux

Which underlines the fact that the former raises fewer concerns than the latter. But when regulation becomes a matter of control, the regulation ceases to serve its function, and simply serves the regulators.

GravatarObama said the system was broken and he's right - the money quote was that the other said has gotten good at gaming the system - no one has refuted that - in fact they've tried scrupulously to ignore his point

GravatarI think a lot of the whining about Obama's choice for campaign finance is it's clear he's playing to win and the they all want '00 '04 redux

No one who matters gives a shit about him opting out.

Who matters? the people who are going to vote for him.

Democrats typically run moronic campaigns where the consultants make a percentage of the ad buys. So of course their answer for everything is a bigger ad buy. GOP campaigns pay staff shit, but everybody is taken care of in between campaigns.

GravatarOp Holland Op.

One campaign finance reform that might pass constitutional muster: a bonus tax (akin to the "millionaires'" self-finance provision) on TV time bought above a certain threshold.

GravatarWhich underlines the fact that the former raises fewer concerns than the latter.

Yes, but I don't think Haloscan supports the underline tag.

Gravatar- the money quote was that the other said has gotten good at gaming the system

Yup, that was good. 2004 was proof of that.

GravatarYes, but I don't think Haloscan supports the underline tag.
NTodd, WhyIGottaBeMrPink

It's because monads don't have windows.

GravatarIt's because monads don't have windows.

They use Macs?

Gravatar the money quote was that the other said has gotten good at gaming the system

There's a Pulitzer for someone who wants to spend a month looking at tax returns and working out how wingnut welfare money sloshes around from organisation to organisation, keeping a bunch of professional wingnuts rich and ensuring that smear merchants can shutter and re-open their doors.

Why do you think existence is stable?

GravatarGonads should be rationed.

GravatarI always thought Warergate was more about wiretapping and obstruction of justice paid for by cash.

GravatarI thought one of the concepts of campaign finance reform was to cap the amount spent on campaigns. Everyone who qualifies gets the same amount of money, spending it how and where they see fit--leveling the playing field. So now that the money comes from small donors, the sky is still the limit on how much gets spent?

I thought the model was shorter campaign season, free televised debates and public financing.

Oh, as long as I'm dreaming, how about we make voting more user-friendly--make election day/period a national holiday or a weekend or mail-in (yay, Oregon).

GravatarListening to Maria Muldaur right now:

GravatarI thought one of the concepts of campaign finance reform was to cap the amount spent on campaigns. Everyone who qualifies gets the same amount of money, spending it how and where they see fit--leveling the playing field.

That was the concept, but in practice people with lots of money could bypass the system via the 527s which gave Swiftboating.

So now that the money comes from small donors, the sky is still the limit on how much gets spent?

Better from small donors than from Corporations and crazy brazilianaires spending Grand-daddy's money.

I don't think the Oregon example is scalable. If you look at postal balloting elsewhere, you see so much potential for fraud. Imagine yer Fundie Patriarch sitting at the table, telling his wimmins and childers how to vote.

What I detest (as a foreigner) is that every two years, and especially every four, there's a massive wealth transfer from individuals to WBFK-15 Bumfuck and yer local cable monopoly. Imposing a 95% tax on political advertising above a certain threshold might encourage a different approach.

GravatarRichard Collins, a wealthy Dallas-based entrepreneur, bankrolled “StopHerNow," an entity set up to defeat the former First Lady.

“For six months, it’s been do we stop her, stop him or stop somebody else?” he notes.

“We spent 18 months and millions of dollars making 'Hillary The Movie,'" laments David Bossie, head of Citizens United and a longtime Clinton tormentor. “We’re incredibly proud, but the problem is the film has no relevance anymore.”

Bossie is now rushing out an Obama movie for later this summer that he promises will include Wright and other controversial figures from the Democrat’s past. But while promising that they’ll also do TV spots, Bossie’s outfit faces the same challenges as other third-party groups hoping to engage in the race – a lack of money.

Citizens United had less than $1 million on hand at then of April.

Who would watch any movie you made, Bossie, except for a handful of wingnuts with one foot already inside the door of a mental asylum?

GravatarI would have really pissed if Obama hadn't opted out. For once the Dems have an enormous advantage and we're gonna need it.

Or maybe Hillary should get on the case and fix everything. Yeah, that's the ticket.

GravatarThe answer is simple: allow only registered voters to contribute to campaigns and keep the current donation caps. No PACs or other entities allowed to inflate the influence of the wealthy and powerful.

GravatarThe Obama small money model hasn't prevented big money donations to him, and the existence of small donations in and of themselves doesn't preclude someone else opting out of public financing and concentrating on big money to compete with the candidate receiving small donations.

There's an assumption here that voluntary compliance with at least some portion of the spirit of election financing law on the part of one candidate assures compliance of all others, and that assumption is mistaken.

"My brush with the "reformers" made me realize they had disturbing desire to regulate for regulation's sake, a belief that all politics must be kept in a little box where they could keep an eye on it."

I wonder if Atrios would enlighten us as to which "reformers" he refers.

M'self, I think politics needs a bit more of an eye kept on it, for some very, very obvious reasons. K Street, anyone?

It may sound like a truism, but money figures into the political process now to a degree which is very, very unhealthy for democracy, and taking a somewhat free market, anti-regulatory attitude to that problem is to ignore it.

Virtually all attempts at campaign finance reform, since the initial efforts after the Nixon years, have been sparring matches between the two major parties, with each side trying to extend whatever perceived advantages they held at the moment.

This, combined with the closed primary system in the largest percentage of states, has effectively shut out worthy third-party candidates, exacerbating the faults of the winner-take-all system now in place.

GravatarJust put on the "Aja" CD.

I was in the mood for some Steely Dan.

GravatarIt seems to me that the small donor model escapes the problem of large givers dramatically influence campaigns, but it doesn't change the reality that in order to run for the presidency in this country you have to have a substantial fortune amassed to get your campaign started. How could any "regular Joe" reach the 1.5 million donors needed to fuel a 50-state, nation-wide campaign?

Maybe to some this isn't a problem, and is not something that we need a campaign finance system to create a solution with, but I tend to think it is. Why is the most important qualification for the American presidency the ability (or willingness) to raise tens of millions of dollars to run a campaign? Shouldn't we be striving for a system where candidates are elected because they have ideas and skills that can benefit the country?

The willingness to climb the governmental ladder for 30+ years hobnobbing with large donors and brokering deals to rise ever-higher in the system doesn't seem to me like a trait that should be necessary (if not sufficient) for being the President of the USA.

Gravatarmonkey, "regular joe" really shouldn't be president.

One of the things I love about Atrios is that he isn't one of these ineffectual, goo-goo, process liberals.

Gravatar"we can only spend tax dollars on killing Muslims and presidential campaigns"-fiscal conservatives

GravatarI guess if you're a professional link finder and make your living off small donations, a small donations political financing model would seem like a great idea.

GravatarLittle Billy: Yes. I apologize a thousand times, but I don't wish for your world in which John McCain and his discredited party is put on equal footing with a political phenomenon like Obama, so you feel cool with the number of TV buys.

Sorry.

Gravatarwhat a rationalization based on a lie

the majority of Obama's money does not come from small donors

more apologists for Obama

GravatarIf Obama really had principles, he'd push for public financing of Congressional campaigns, including provisions for third-party Congressional candidates.

But NO member of the two-party duopoly will do that.

GravatarAndruw: If politicians can win based on private money, regardless of the form it comes in, then I'm afraid institutions with power will find a way to exploit that. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe politicians can legislate a campaign finance system that will be bring some kind of fairness to the system. Still, I'd argue that a 100% publicly financed system would be better. I'd rather have a fair debate based on the ingenuity of each campaign to manage whatever their equal financing allowed, than a debate that could be decided by voters and institutions who donated more.

Apologies to Atrios in my last post it was in poor taste.

GravatarRE "In effect, the Obama campaign has come closer to achieving the ideals of campaign finance reform than 30-plus years of regulation."

The $2,300 limit is a regulation.

Campaigns wouldn't be based on relatively small donations instead of million dollar donations without that regulation.
