Pfizer Exec Arrested On Child Pornography Charges
A Pfizer vice president has been arrested on charges of receiving, possessing and distributing child pornography. Alan Hesketh, 61, was arrested at JFK airport by federal agents Wednesday and is being held without bond, reports the newspaper The Day.
Hesketh, who works on patent issues in the firm’s offices in New London, Conn., is currently on leave from the company, a Pfizer spokesman told the WSJ . The company is “cooperating fully with authorities,” the spokesman added.
A call from the WSJ Law Blog to Hesketh’s lawyer wasn’t immediately returned this morning.
Hesketh is accused of posing as a 28-year-old woman in online chats while trading images of children engaged in sexual acts, according to a court document filed in the case. He signed on as “Suzybibaby” from his home, as well as from an Internet address registered to Pfizer in New York.
If indicted and convicted, he could face a mandatory minimum of five years in prison, a maximum of 20 years for receiving and distributing child pornography and a maximum of 10 years for possessing child porn, the WSJ Law Blog says.

Out of curiosity, [former Bush administration economist Alan] Viard asked a research assistant to put together a list of spending cuts and revenue hikes to cover the cost of making the Bush tax cuts permanent. Her findings? For starters, the government would have to slash benefits for Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid recipients.
"Any such package is political death," Viard said. "Not to put too fine a point on it."

An "ethereal" 10 second clip of a woman singing a French folk song has been played for the first time in 150 years.
The recording of "Au Clair de la Lune", recorded in 1860, is thought to be the oldest known recorded human voice.
A phonograph of Thomas Edison singing a children's song in 1877 was previously thought to be the oldest record.
The new "phonautograph", created by etching soot-covered paper, has now been played by US scientists using a "virtual stylus" to read the lines.
"When I first heard the recording as you hear it ... it was magical, so ethereal," audio historian David Giovannoni, who found the recording, told AP.

Cubans are to be allowed unrestricted access to mobile phones for the first time, in the latest reform announced under new President Raul Castro.
In a statement in official newspaper Granma, state telecom monopoly ETECSA said it would offer mobile services to the public in the next few days.
Some Cubans already own mobile phones, but they have had to acquire them via a third party, often foreigners.
Cuba's rate of cell phone usage remains among the lowest in Latin America.
Now Cubans will be able to subscribe to pre-paid mobile services under their own names, instead of going through foreigners or in some cases their work places.

One of my neighbors (over eighty now) has always lived in this area and when he was a boy they made silent movies in a nearby park. When the site closed he found some film and donated it to the local high school. It was a wild west story, set in Massachusetts.

Shy, slow-moving and virtually blind, the manatee looks like a walrus without tusks. They can weigh up to one tonne and can grow to be the length of a sofa. But despite their size they are harmless.
Ofori-Danson says hunting has made them fearful of humans, and this makes it even tougher for the Earthwatch team to study them. During the research trip the 10-strong team saw only three young manatees.
"We are working under very difficult conditions and we also have to educate the communities. However, in my view the study was successful despite the conditions," he says.
"They are quite elusive in our system here. We eat them; we hunt them; we exploit them – so they run away from us. They don't want us to see them, so it is more difficult to study them than [to study manatees] in Florida, for example. Also, the water here is murky, so you can't see the manatees even if they are very close to you."
Some river communities believe so strongly in the folklore surrounding the manatees that they would never dare harm them. People are reluctant to talk about manatees for fear of retribution, and look nervously at the ground when asked about them.
One fisherman from Akosombo, a town on the banks of the Volta, refuses to speak of mami water, other than to say: "It is not an animal. It is a woman."

NEW YORK -- U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., has added his voice to others in the party saying that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton should abandon her White House run.
Leahy said there is no way that Clinton can win enough delegates to get the nomination. He told Vermont Public Radio in an interview that Clinton ought to withdraw and should be backing Sen. Barack Obama. But Leahy said that's obviously a decision only Clinton can make.

When my father died in 1951, Mother sold most of his record collection. I still have the rest of the 78s in a mahogany 2-door case about 4 feet high and 3 feet wide. Been hauling that around ever since Mother died in 1970. Obviously, I have a sentimentality issue. Some of them are really good recordings, though, if you don't mind the scratching sounds and changing the record every three minutes -- Rachmaninoff playing his own works, Jascha Heifetz, the young Frank Sinatra and Dinah Shore. Not to mention the Carson J. Robison recording of "Mussolini's Letter to Hitler" and "Hitler's Reply to Mussolini" (on the flip side), a hilarious novelty song from 1943. Oh -- and some "party records" that were "not for radio broadcast."

A senior Bear Stearns executive with 20 years' experience has been accused of defecting to rival Morgan Stanley with so many print-outs of confidential client information that the troubled bank's Boston office ran out of paper.
A Massachusetts judge has granted Bear Stearns an emergency restraining order against Douglas Sharon, the head of its Boston office who resigned on March 17 - the day after the bank accepted a rescue takeover by JP Morgan.
In a writ which reveals the depth of turmoil within the bank, Bear Stearns has accused Sharon of aggressively recruiting colleagues to go with him to Morgan Stanley and of sending out a mass mailshot to Bear's clients urging them to transfer their allegiance.

Since I can't talk about Philadelphia, I have to talk about the thread topic.
This always reminds me of a dimly remembered Pogo cartoon, where Howland Owl and Churchy LaFemme (or similar bright lights) are trying to solve a math problem, which won't solve because they have some numbers they don't know what to do with. At which point Churchy (or someone similar) helpfully suggests those numbers be put over here. Out of the way, they are no longer a problem.
Just never thought I'd live to see government run like a Pogo cartoon. It was supposed to be a joke, I thought....

I don't think Democrats need to overtly mention it. Late night comedians do that.
The other night, Craig Fergeson said "When John McCain first ran for the Senate, he was called a liar by the most famous comedian of that time: Mark Twain."

One of my irrational wants is an early 60s cabinet console hifi. There's a wonderful example in "Kitten With a Whip." They're basically a large, extremely heavy piece of furniture that put out a sound that's not quite like anything else, with bottomless low end and a general smoothing of the edges. It's all the wood, I think. Anyway, you don't see many of these anymore. And they weigh a freakin' ton. And I've nowhere to put one. But to me, there was an elegance there.

One of things I found interesting was to take a stroll through the Olde City section. Sometimes row home owners will place a sign in the window telling you when that particular house was built, who it was built for, and what they did a for a living.
It's sometimes odd to see an nice little row home and then see it was built in the late 1700's for a sailmaker or something.

a lot of engine surges on that model engine too.
that's when the compressor can't handle all the air coming in and hiccups the air through to the combustion chamber. it results in a huge banging sound but not necessarily any damage to the turbine.
flame-outs on the other hand, will burn your blades in a millisecond and lose all the power to the prop.
the 120 series is the worst p&w has. they should have stuck to a free wheel design instead of a 2 spool.
