Tell me, why would the white house have any interest in the 2008 campaign? Their term is supposed to be up, so what can they gain by helping formulate a plan to "win"?

Second only to Saudi Arabia in abundance of petroleum, Canada’s Alberta oil sands are integral to providing a secure supply of oil to gas-guzzlers in the U.S. But new research reveals that zealous oil production coupled with climate change has left the water supplies that are used to steam oil out of the sand in critical condition. An influx of water-conserving technologies and policies is needed.
Current provincial regulations don’t protect the Athabasca River system, the industry’s source of water in and around Fort McMurray, Alberta. As a result, oil production in the area has spiraled without meaningful environmental safeguards. The controversy about the state of the Athabasca prompted scientists at the University of Toronto and the University of Alberta to assess the impact of oil production on the province’s water resources. In a report (PDF size: 2.1 MB) issued on May 10, the scientists conclude that the explosive demand for water has put the oil industry on a collision course with the river, which is rapidly drying up because of warming temperatures.
The Athabasca River tumbles 1400 kilometers from the Canadian Rockies to Lake Athabasca in the northeast corner of Alberta, forming the largest boreal delta in the world and a UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization World Heritage Site. The river is larder and highway to five aboriginal nations. It also runs through the oil sands operations at Fort McMurray, which is the largest industrial complex in the world.

President Bush warned Congress on Saturday that he will use his veto power to stop runaway government spending.
"The American people do not want to return to the days of tax-and-spend policies," Bush said in his radio address.
The House passed a $37 billion budget for the Homeland Security Department on Friday, but Republicans rallied enough votes to uphold a promised veto from Bush.
The measure — one of several annual spending bills that Congress began to consider this week — exceeds Bush's request for the department by $2.1 billion.
Democrats on Friday defended the extra money in the homeland security bill, noting it contains money to hire 3,000 additional border agents, improve explosive detection at airports and provides money to double the amount of cargo screened on passenger aircraft.
The administration, hoping to appease Republicans who demand fiscal restraint, has pledged to keep overall spending to the level in Bush's proposed budget in February

Q. There was a big flap yesterday about some comments made by Harry Reid concerning Gen. Petraeus, and the outgoing Peter Pace, saying they were incompetent, basically. Is that useful, and do you know that to be true or not... It's generally being reported in a lot of places.
LIEBERMAN: I don't know what Harry Reid is up to. I was very upset, even offended, by what he said about General Pace and General Petraeus. Look, you call General Pace incompetent? That's abs - this is a man who has devoted his entire life to the Marine corps, the service of our country, defense of our country.
Q. Why is he doing this? Why is Reid doing this?
LIEBERMAN: I have no idea. Then to say that Petraeus is out of touch? I mean, Harry Reid in Washington says David Petraeus, who's in Baghdad, away from his family, heroically trying to rally our forces and succeed over in Iraq... that he's out of touch? I mean, it's just - the danger here - my colleagues who have been opposed to the war have said "we're opposed to the war, but we support our troops." But when you start to attack the top two generals, you know, that's... that's wrong. I hope he apologizes, I just hope he misstated...

I would say that a large part of the majority leader's job is to shape public perception of the party and the work being done in the Congress, as well as actually to lead and induce others serving with him to follow. So nobody remembers the budget they passed that Bush vetoed? They won that Congressional battle, got the GOP on record, were able to pass the supplemental that deflated any attacks on them about not funding/supporting troops, and the battles continue. And, of course, there are other issues than just Iraq. 100 hours? Remember?
And I still have to ask: what are we willing to do ourselves to end the war if we're not happy with our proxies' methodical political approach when, you must admit, Bush still wields considerable power with the veto pen and no veto-proof Dem majority?

Yeah, I get that that's your message. But as to what Congress is doing, my attitude is that I have been long done waiting to see some kind of evidence the Dems have any idea how to present themselves and what they're doing in an effective way. I pay close attention myself and I hardly know what the hell they're talking about. What chance does a barely-engaged member of the public have?
You seem to be suggesting that if only we could tell them what they want in just the right way, *then* they'll listen to us for sure! I do not believe they are unaware of what we and the rest of the country want. Their reasons for not acting on it or even acting against it must then be for some other reason. You want to believe it's because they are following some long term strategy, great, I hope you're right. And I hope we're all still around to enjoy it when they unleash all the dry powder. I'll happily eat my words.

I think it was an attempt by Congress to assert power in the shadow of an extremely powerful Presidency (perhaps also to switch tracks on the gravy train back in their direction).
By 1938-1939, FDR could no longer expect automatic support from Democrats in Congress.

Yes, NTodd, I've already been there. You just speak so authoritatively, I figured you had a post on it on one of your blogs already.
I don't recall speaking authoritatively. I merely observed you've seen cohesion on votes in the past, such as the first timetables vote and on non-Iraq issues. But you seem to not really care when I post about actual trends and dismiss it as "theory", so I'm not all that motivated to dig up anything else. You might not consider what I find "important votes".
As I said, I don't think debating Reid's performance is all that constructive. He ain't going anywhere unless people are willing to do more than piss and moan about how he hasn't done everything exactly the way they want in exactly the right time frame.
And that goes for our entire governmental apparatus. They have our consent right now, tacit or otherwise. If you want to really get them to do something, or get out, then you have to really threaten to withdraw consent and be prepared to carry through on that threat.
Perhaps if we have to wait another 18 months to get people elected to end this war, we can. I just hate that it is going to take that long.

I think the reluctance to give any credit to the Dems is similar to that of a parent who tends to withhold praise from a child out of fear that the child will think they have done enough and won't try harder.
We are afraid that Reid and the others will think they don't have to risk anything and won't push if they get praise and campaign contributions for a less than ideal result. I admit it -- I don't want them to think they can coast from here on...but NTodd is right too, they are doing a hell of a lot more than the 109th and we should let them know that we do appreciate what they are able to do. Well, at least as if concerns the war. You have a lot of idiots lit Dick Armey and Forbes willing to turn this country into a more feudal state by stripping out any kind of progressive tax code. But back to the war. We lost control of the government when Truman and others at the beginning of the cold war authorized black budgets. We lost accountability. We lost representative democracy regardless of what those in congress think they are doing being on VERY secret committees. We spend more tax dollars per year on military bands than the NEA. We can launch shock and woe but cannot find graves for +100 victims of Katrina. And there was a link here earlier about the government's concerns over kids' chemistry kits. Did you know that in at least one state you do not need to register a firearm but you do need to register having an Erlenmeyer Flask? That is seriously fucked up.

On another note, would it be a bannable offense--hypothetically speaking, of course--to fantasize out loud of a terrible collision between Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter? You can game W-4s and make sure to owe the government at the end of the year, which you then refuse to pay.
Alternately, you can withhold a symbolic amount (e.g., your "share" of the war). Or choose to live below the poverty line so you will have no tax liability (the only legal option).

There is.
I like the phone tax resistance. I did not know that the tax on the phone bill was paying for the military. Better yet, the past has shown that the phone company has no enforcement over collecting these taxes.

This is not "W's war." This war was brought to our shores by Al Queda. Now we are fighting Al Queda in Iraq, and just announced a new counteroffensive against Al Queda in and around Bagdhad. I, for one, am glad this President is sticking to his promise to go after Al Queda whenever and wherever they are.

Heh, that's one I do still pay because I'm not in a position just yet to go without a phone. I also pay property taxes (which fund education here in Vermont).
I fully expect the State of Vermont to be on my case before the IRS. I do want to fund stuff locally, but I've been disappointed with the state leg regarding impeachment and since our state income tax is linked to the Federal, it's hard to not evade both.

On page 81 of today’s Guardian weekly entertainment guide, BBC2’s ‘Rome’ is heartily recommended: “More sexy toga antics with a heavy dose of shagging, carousing and duffings.”
No doubt the Guardian’s affluent, educated readership will be aware that “duffings” means “beatings”. The verb “to be duffed up” means “to be beaten up.”
However, I wonder how many readers will be aware that this verb derives from the activities of Douglas V. Duff (1901 – 197.
Who he?
He was a state terrorist employed by the U.K. government during the British Mandate in Palestine. His particular expertise was torturing Arabs.

I'm glad to see these four running again. They could win this time, and none of them are DLC types.

Shit, the state got on my case a couple years ago over 7 bucks mere weeks after the filing deadline. I was going to challenge it (it was a fuck up with their new webpay system), but decided it wasn't worth my time even though it pissed me off just on principle.
I already have my nice refusal letter prepared for them.

Property is a pretty good measure of wealth. Henry George saw this years ago ("Progress and Poverty" 1879). The problem is that so many are excluded from paying tax (the catholic church is the second largest landowner in NYC). Plus public work projects like interstate highways have removed massive amount of property from the tax roles. For example, when they put I-75 through Dayton, Ohio, they grabbed a huge amount of riverfront property and devalued anything near it. Why shouldn't the government have to pay taxes on its assets and property? Because we still believe in government as rulers who can own us rather than us owning them.
