The fact that Obama doesn’t care about so many basic Democratic values —like choice —is of concern to all of us.

SMERCONISH: Look, I don’t get invited out anywhere. You do, Chris. … I’m grilling burgers in an hour in Philly. But let me ask you something. Isn’t this a violation of the dinner code? Isn’t this like a hooker who gives up a john? I mean, isn’t there some impropriety here?
MATTHEWS: I used to love that rule, that when you’re out having fun with each other, you weren’t sitting there with radios, you weren’t quoting them, you weren’t going to screw them in the morning. That’s the world I like to live in. But I have learned, everything you say can be used against you.

I've made sure that no anniversary nor birthday is that important. My kids get a family party that can be weeks or months from the actual date.
I dislike those people who burst into tears at the forgetting of such dates. If it's that so fucking important, tell the person.

Rice blasts Hizbullah for "killing innocent civilians" in Lebanon
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Friday said Hizbullah, backed by Syria and Iran, is killing and injuring innocent civilians in Lebanon. Rice added that the Shiite movement is trying to protect its "state-within-a-state." Her statement was read at a State Department briefing Friday.
According to Rice, Hizbullah's violence has demonstrated "contempt for its fellow Lebanese."
She urged Iran and Syria to end their support for Hizbullah. "This support is a reflection of our unshakable commitment to the Lebanese people and their hope for democratic change," Rice said. "We will stand by the Lebanese government and peaceful citizens of Lebanon through this crisis and provide the support they need to weather this storm."

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Lebanon's Iranian-backed Hezbollah group took control of the Muslim half of Beirut on Friday in what the U.S.-backed governing coalition called "an armed and bloody coup".
The United States pointed to Hezbollah's links with Tehran and Damascus and said it was talking with other powers about taking measures against "those responsible for the violence".
At least 18 people have been killed and 38 wounded in three days of battles between pro-government gunmen and fighters loyal to Hezbollah, a Shi'ite movement with a powerful guerrilla army.
The violence follows 17 months of political deadlock between the Hezbollah-led opposition, which demands more say in government, and the ruling coalition. It has paralyzed the country and left it without a president.
Lebanon's worst internal strife since the 1975-90 civil war erupted this week after the government decided to dismantle Hezbollah's military communications network. The group said the government had declared war.
In scenes reminiscent of the civil war, men with rifles roamed the streets amid smashed cars and smoldering buildings.
Fighting died down as outgunned government supporters, many of them supporters of Sunni leader Saad al-Hariri, handed over their weapons and offices to the army, which has tried to remain neutral in the conflict.

Our republican neighbors were telling me today that they might vote for obama. They are among the group of mystery republicans who always vote republican even though they hate religious nuts, don't like the war, and are upset about the police state. Yet, since they started voting in Reagan's election, they have never considered a democrat.
The whole process is very resistant to easy analysis.

Know why the Army is trying to remain neutral? Firstly, it knows Hizbullah can and will kick its ass. Secondly, the Army openly admires Hizbullah for kicking Israel's ass. Thirdly, the Army isn't going to dismantle Hizbullah on behalf of Lebanon's gangster official leaders in part because Israel wwill re-invade the second that happens, because everyone knows Hizbullah offers a deterrant and the "real" Army does not. Hurting their logical enemy but actual big brother is the last thing they want.

Got a chance to try Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Brut for the first time in a long time yesterday and it still tastes like exactly what it is... mass-produced mediocrity. Cov...t_covered_songs
The Beatles' "Yesterday" is often called the most covered song in popular music history; some allege there are over three thousand different versions, although no evidence has been provided. An online cover song database lists a little over a hundred covers for the song,[21] but places Eleanor Rigby as being more covered than it.[22] The Beatles' "Come Together" has also been covered numerous times. It has been documented that "A Whiter Shade of Pale" by Procol Harum has been covered over 800 times.[23]George Gershwin's "Summertime" (from Porgy and Bess) is considered a standard (see jazz standard) so has been performed in enough versions that an accurate number might be difficult to ascertain. Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" (from the film Holiday Inn) is well known for having been covered, and what is more a popular hit record, numerous times. According to one estimate "Cry Me a River", written by Arthur Hamilton, had 115 cover versions. [24] The 1973 song Radar Love by Golden Earring has been recorded over 350 times[25] and has appeared in many TV shows, movies and even video games. One of the most famous folk songs which has been covered more than 250 times[1][2] is "House of the rising sun". It has been covered by famous artists like Bob Dylan, The Animals, Nina Simone, Eric Burdon [3][4] [5]
Other songs which have been released many times as cover versions include "Popcorn" by Gershon Kingsley (which has been covered over 200 times,[26]) "Rock Around the Clock",[27],, "Eres Tú" by Mocedades, [28]"Billie Jean" by Michael Jackson, "Over the Rainbow" by Judy Garland, "Blue Monday" (New Order), "Louie Louie" (Richard Berry), "Sunny" (Bobby Hebb), "Fever" (Otis Blackwell),"Across the Universe" (The Beatles), "Baby It's You" (The Shirelles), "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" (Jimmy Webb), "Helter Skelter" (The Beatles), "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" (Bob Dylan), "Twist and Shout" (Isley Brothers), "We Will Rock You" (Queen), "Besame Mucho" (Consuelo Velázquez), "Free Bird" (Lynyrd Skynyrd), "When I Fall In Love" (Doris Day), "Love Will Tear Us Apart" (Joy Division), "Stardust" (Bing Crosby), "Garota de Ipanema" (Tom Jobim/Vinicius de Moraes), "Feelings" (Morris Albert), "No Woman No Cry" (Bob Marley & the Wailers), "Dirty Old Town" (Ewan MacColl), "I Fought the Law" (Sonny Curtis), "Axel F" (Harold Faltermeyer), "Roll Over Beethoven" (Chuck Berry), "How Deep Is Your Love" (The Bee Gees), "Something" (The Beatles), "Missing You" (John Waite), "Soul Man" (Sam & Dave) and many of the less recent works of Bob Dylan (such as "Knocking on Heaven's Door" and "All Along the Watchtower") "Paranoid" (Black Sabbath) and Leonard Cohen (as of December 5, 2004, there were at least 940 published cover versions of Cohen songs.[29]) The Australian television program The Money or the Gun featured for every episode a new cover of Stairway to Heaven, played in versions ranging from a Wagnerian opera to a Bea

Atrios posted this article a few threads back. Keep in mind that Obama* praised Petraeus's tactics recently:
So let's recap the scene: the US military and its Iraqi "allies" are laying siege to a sprawling neighborhood in Baghdad housing roughly 2.5 million Iraqis, launching air strikes, artillery attacks, tank shells and other assorted ordnance, shutting down hospitals and bombing others, cutting off the supply of food and walling off entire sectors of the embattled region, causing a refugee crisis by their actions - and now actually pursuing a policy with the intent of creating a larger refugee crisis!

McClatchy does some digging into the source of those "Obama is a secret muslim" emails we all love so much:
One practitioner in Virginia, who hates Obama like a dog hates cats, led a reporter through his efforts. Because the man is a retired clandestine CIA officer, identifying him could endanger officers or operations that remain classified, so McClatchy will not reveal his name.
In late 2006, convinced that an Obama presidency would be disastrous for America, he decided to start an anti-Obama operation. He combed the public record on Obama. He used a couple of allies and informants - half-jokingly dubbing his group "The Crusaders" - to learn about Obama's background, especially his Africa connection and how he came to be the editor of the Harvard Law Review.
Talk to all you fine folks later in the morning...

Republicans Vote Against Moms; No Word Yet on Puppies, Kittens
By Dana Milbank
Friday, May 9, 2008; A03
It was already shaping up to be a difficult year for congressional Republicans. Now, on the cusp of Mother's Day, comes this: A majority of the House GOP has voted against motherhood.
On Wednesday afternoon, the House had just voted, 412 to 0, to pass H. Res. 1113, "Celebrating the role of mothers in the United States and supporting the goals and ideals of Mother's Day," when Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R-Kan.), rose in protest.
"Mr. Speaker, I move to reconsider the vote," he announced.
Rep. Kathy Castor (D-Fla.), who has two young daughters, moved to table Tiahrt's request, setting up a revote. This time, 178 Republicans cast their votes against mothers.
It has long been the custom to compare a popular piece of legislation to motherhood and apple pie. Evidently, that is no longer the standard. Worse, Republicans are now confronted with a John Kerry-esque predicament: They actually voted for motherhood before they voted against it.
Republicans, unhappy with the Democratic majority, have been using such procedural tactics as this all week to bring the House to a standstill, but the assault on mothers may have gone too far. House Minority Leader John Boehner, asked yesterday to explain why he and 177 of his colleagues switched their votes, answered: "Oh, we just wanted to make sure that everyone was on record in support of Mother's Day."
By voting against it?
If Boehner's explanation doesn't make much sense, he's been under a great deal of stress lately.

The secrets to the success of the Israeli hardliners are (1) these people are fucking gangsters and there is nothing they will stop at, (2) they own huge pieces of everything either by simply owning it or through blackmailing schemes (brothels, etc), and (3) the Israeli government is literally expressly designed to give them disproportionate power. Mythical outside bigotry
is a club for them to use to scare other Jews, but it has no real meaning or advantage to them. Lev Leviev neither dominated the diamond game nor destroyed innocent lives in some kind of reaction to illiterate and easily stopped skinheads.

War With Iran Might Be Closer Than You Think
Posted on May 9th, 2008 by Philip Giraldi
There is considerable speculation and buzz in Washington today suggesting that the National Security Council has agreed in principle to proceed with plans to attack an Iranian al-Qods-run camp that is believed to be training Iraqi militants... The White House contacted the Iranian government directly yesterday through a channel provided by the leadership of the Kurdish region in Iraq, which has traditionally had close ties to Tehran. The US demanded that Iran admit that it has been interfering in Iraq and also commit itself to taking steps to end the support of various militant groups. There was also a warning about interfering in Lebanon. The Iranian government reportedly responded quickly, restating its position that it would not discuss the matter until the US ceases its own meddling employing Iranian dissident groups. The perceived Iranian intransigence coupled with the Lebanese situation convinced the White House that some sort of unambiguous signal has to be sent to the Iranian leadership, presumably in the form of cruise missiles.
I love teh Groucho marching.

Cincinnati's got it's good point. There used to be a miniature "club" there that was just an old beer vat...held a band and ten people, tops. You entered through a hole in the pavement.
Indianapolis is grimy, ugly, backwards, drab, dumb, and mean, in my experience. And there's way too much of it.

anyone with a brain can love Detroit. including: people who don't hate black people. yes, it Sucks. like Philly sux, or chicago, or miami sucks. what 'sucks' about a city? that parts of it aren't poor, brown/black, unglamorous, and have brutal police oppression/violence. at the same time, those same dangerous elements make cities exciting, if you're young/fearless. ahem: where are the best Clubs, restaurtants, parties and social gatherings located? hint: not in Mcmansion land. at least to me.

I don't buy it either, Erin. Clinton's lead here in OH isn't eve double digits anymore; it's down to 8.8%. And Gov. Strickland, who supported her, is from southern Ohio so she got special consideration there. And there was that false story about Obama's campaign telling Canada his stand of NAFTA was for election purposes only. I think he would have been even closer to her if that story had had time to play out and if she didn't have so much of the state party apparatus on her team. Lots and lots of voters here are really starting to think.

However, this whole “white” thing is an anathema to what she has always been – I think being in poll meetings everyday and talking nothing but race/gender/educ. demographics EVERYDAY (and yes dear hearts, Obama does it too) may blur strategy and reality, then again it may not, but I am overlooking this because IMHO she could not calculate this language at this point and I will not throw 30 years of good onto the trash-heap of 4 months

i wouldn't be so sure of it, as we're not talking about the brightest bulbs here.
my own mom, who also listens to lynn samuels, supported hillary based on a tehory she heard on the show which was this:
oprah supported obama. oprah was friendly to arnold schwartzenager. therefore, oprah is a closet repulbican. therefore, if oprah is a closet repug, she would only support obama if HE was a closet republican.
see the brilliance?
after lynn talked about how she might support ron paul today she took a call from a female truck driver. the truck driver had a theory that the USA has secret shitloads of oil, but the reason we don't pump it is so that other countries don't invade us for our oil. lynn told her she was a brilliant thinker.

The sad thing is that now when I show Lambert his 2006 attacks on DLC and contrast to his current argument that the only opposition to DLC is due to the fact that Obama and Kos don't control it, and he just says that things have changed.

they are that, but that's only a *result* of their prime ethos was based on a hate of 'interest groups'
Really? I don't think of them that way at all. I just see them as opportunistic people who were fairly liberal on social issues, but saw a way to compete with the R's on their own turf by coddling up to the corps. They could go quite far in bed with them without the public really catching on as to how far they were taking it up the butt until the jobs were gone. They are flat out opportunistic and pragmatic. But that won't work anymore, because bush has ruined the country with their assistance.

Fox had one of those nutters on this year who accused the Clintons of killing cat and her husband - and that whiny bullshitter thinks anyone is stupid enough to believe Fox has been the most balanced toward them?
The disdain for the average person's intelligence is almost as bad as it is the Bush team. And it's not just her staff - she's doing it, also. Gawd, they're making me sick. I almost voted for her in the primary.

"Speaking of "you had to be there," anyone familiar with the Finley era has no problem with Dick Green at second base. He was a .240 lifetime hitter but could jolt the occasional homer and was simply phenomenal in the field, a match for the great Bill Mazeroski for pure Gold Glove work. Green nearly stole the MVP award for the 1974 World Series, in which he went 0-for-13, because of his stunning relay throw (cutting down the Dodgers' Bill Buckner in Game 5) and other spectacular defensive plays."
He was a clinic in second basery. I lived in Oakland thenabouts, and got to take BART out to the stadium. Eventually got to see Reggie Jackson hit a homer off Catfish Hunter, after Hunter went to the Yankees. A rope.

"he Obama memo bashed Bubba for investing in companies that ship U.S. jobs to India, and accused his wife of raking in gobs of campaign cash from Indian-Americans and favoring Indian businesses over heartland jobs. It labeled her "Sen. Clinton (D-Punjab)."
actually, hrc called HERSELF sen. punjab, so spare me the fake outrage.
the memo was an internal doc highlighting her love of outsourcing and sucking up to companies like cisco(big contibuters) to allow foreign visas and outsourcing.

"and then i pinched that nerve which causes convulsions, and he fell failing."
I liked your post the other day.
thank you, both of you. know (again) i am not the same as my blogmates. we are different people. you want to hash it out with me? let's go. use my words, my posts, my positions. but if you want to trash my blogfamily, well, i'll treat you like anyone who trashes my 'real' gay or blood family: irrationally and with Loyalty. that's what it means to be 'family.' i'm sorry if you don't have/enjoy that.
but anyway: we're not all the same. if you have a point, any point, let's talk. if you want to know what i think, ask. but don't presume that "we all think alike" nor that you know my/his/our minds or motivations. hello, SCLM propaganda, anyone? why the fuck do you, does anyone, really invest themselves in all this? ahem: superdelagates will, for a while now, decide your next dem candidate. that's fact. the rest? fluff, and emotion, and distraction. what part of that don't you understand? i've been saying it since, like, Edwards dropped out and i realized that it's utterly gamed. disagree? prove me wrong, with facts. bitches ( just funin wit u there)

Harold Ford is so damn bad every time I see him, I'm actually glad he lost the Senate race here.
If he shows any backbone or stands for traditional Democratic party principles, I have the misfortune of missing it. Mostly he seems like some RWer's puppet..he just agrees and agrees.

Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) issued a round of apologies yesterday for a memo generated by his campaign staff that referred to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) as a senator from the Indian region of Punjab and criticized her record on outsourcing.

Alberto Gonzales had no more bidness running the Justice Department than I do.
really. read 'reinventing democrats' by kenneth baer. it's a history of the group by an admirer/synchophant.
basically it was formed by southern conservative dems who thought the party was taken over by the aforementioned 'interest groups', which made it harder for them to be elected.
For instance, take unions. For pols in the south unions cause big headaches because they are seen practically as commie outposts by a large segment of the populace. so if you support unions, you are a commie. so it's just easier to take business money.
the thing is that it's a reactive strategy that doesn't work, because no matter how conservative you wanna act it'll never be conservative enough.

I tried signing up there a couple of weeks back and it never went through. Whoever is in charge wrote me a couple of nice emails about it, but whenever I clicked the included link to verify, I got a message that said I wasn't authorized to view the page.
I finally gave up. I signed up in the first place to comment on a post I'd been led to from some other blog. I can't even remember what it was about anymore . . .

what's your point? someone on the staff produced a memo referring to hrc in her own words. further, it was an internal doc, never uttered in public. they apologized.
so you got me, there is no difference at all about hillary and bill's continuous race basiting.
