From Media Matters:
Media uncritically repeat McCain claim that Obama "will raise" taxes
In reports on Sen. John McCain's acceptance speech at the RNC, several media outlets uncritically reported McCain's claim that Sen. Barack Obama "will raise" taxes, without pointing out that McCain's own chief economic adviser has reportedly said the accusation is inaccurate or that Obama has in fact proposed cutting taxes for low- and middle-income families and raising them only on households earning more than $250,000 per year.

This was just posted at the end of the last thread and is republished here as a public service:
It really appears that the entire proffered narrative defining Sarah Palin is a lie, and that everything about Obama that has and will come out of her mouth is a Damned Lie. And she thinks that she is immune from being called on this utterly reprehensible, cynical strategy because any attempt to expose it will be denounced as rank sexism by her and an army of surrogates. In short, she is opening up on us with an A-K and then trying to duck behind her own skirts. We can't let her do it, and if the media lets her do it, they will be personally responsible for the collapse of human civilization.

Zombie lie told at RNC convention and ignored by MSM:
"Most Americans live in small towns."
Think about that. Does that even sound plausible? The NY, and LA metro areas alone make up over 10% of the country.
Most Americans BY FAR live in urban areas, and have for at least the last 60 years, probably much longer.
"In 2000, the total population of the U.S. was 281,421,906, the urban population was 222,360,539 (79.01%), and the rural population of the U.S. was 59,061,367 (20.99%)."

OT, some questions from Americablog:
How long this "conservatorship" period lasts is anyone's guess. Will it even work or will it have to be completely nationalized is another big question and questions during troubled times do not bring confidence. The market is built on confidence so are they helping? Long term, Americans are stuck with the debt until Freddie and Fannie can generate enough revenue to move on. Freddie and Fannie will have to be more cautious with loans until their debt is settled and that is indeed a problem. Moving forward, how interested will the rest of the world be in buying America's credit debt after they lose everything? As a country we have pushed our credit problem to everyone and after this loss, the world is going to be much less interested in buying our problems, rightly so.
Sounds like bills are really coming due.

Seems like some campaign consultant who is being paid roughly 20 times my salary could come up with something memorable, like "Are you better off now than you were 4 years ago?"
I'm not trying to be all concern-y, but I was just a little less plugged in to the blogs and my usual news sources than usual last week, and I don't remember hearing jack from Obama's campaign, much less a strong rebuttal to McCain's dreary bullshit speech.

No, I don't think so. A) Most people don't remember the Black Panthers. You have to keep in mind the majority of the electorate is under 50, which means they've never heard of the Black Panters, except in a history class or an "old" movie If then).
B) Most people don't give two thoughts to "community organizers." That may be a dog whistle to rural parts of the American West (like Alaska), but it's hardly a major hot button issue.
C) Many people know "community organizers" as the folks who run Meals on Wheels or similar organizations, which help white folks as well as "minorities." Again, if they know them at all.
I think that phrase resonates with the GOP base (a tiny percentage of the electorate) and offends many more (from the responses I've heard, and not just on this blog).

And how they sent out millions of emails with an elaborate lie about how Obama had been raised as an American-hating Muslim since birth? And how it didn't work and nobody believed it because the "sources" were never "confirmed" or "went on the record" or were "taped"? And how the wingnuts that tried to start such a dispicable rumor were ostracized from the Republican Party by its leaders who stood up and said in a loud voice "we're better than this"?
I saw one NOBAMA sticker here -- didn't like that.

No, I don't think so. A) Most people don't remember the Black Panthers. You have to keep in mind the majority of the electorate is under 50, which means they've never heard of the Black Panters, except in a history class or an "old" movie If then).
Shouldn't have said Panthers. I was using it to stand in for very scary black people.
B) Most people don't give two thoughts to "community organizers." That may be a dog whistle to rural parts of the American West (like Alaska), but it's hardly a major hot button issue.
Not now. Not yet.
C) Many people know "community organizers" as the folks who run Meals on Wheels or similar organizations, which help white folks as well as "minorities." Again, if they know them at all.
I very much hope so.
I think that phrase resonates with the GOP base (a tiny percentage of the electorate) and offends many more (from the responses I've heard, and not just on this blog).

what astounds me is that the very same people who decry gov't involvement in social programs would slam someone for being involved in non-gov't community asssistance. logically, wouldn't someone with experience on that side of things know how to utilize its strenghts?

If there was a great response, I'd like to know, but I guarantee all most people heard was what got on my radar, which was how Palin hit a "home run" and McCain "defined" himself.
Doc
That was yesterday, and frankly, TDS showed just how much McCain "defined" himself. The fruit is not just hanging low on this one, it's one the ground to be picked up.
Less than 60 days to go, and never forget: Obama raised $10 million in the time between Palin's speech and the end of McCain's speech.
The RNC raised $1 million.

Hillary is doing events with Obama next week. Per the Obama campaign:
On MONDAY, September 8, U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York will campaign in Florida on behalf of Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama. Her visit will include a Change We Need rally for voters in Tampa and a community event on the economy in Kissimmee.
At both events, Sen. Clinton will address the choice we have in this election – between a new direction for our economy or four more years of the Bush failed economic policies that McCain-Palin is offering. She will talk about the Obama-Biden plan for immediate and lasting relief for America’s working families.
Obama: makes oblique reference to not looking like other presidents.
----------------------------------
After McCain actually DID put Obama's face on a dollar bill to show how America would change:
Only if the stark contrast between what she is and what she purports herself to be is made perfectly clear to the American public.
blerb
True, but it's going viral. Watch.
In two to three weeks, every woman in this country will know where Palin stands on choice, censorship, and Christianity.
And it's well to the right of ninety-five percent of the country.
Add to this that she is a singularly unpleasant person, and I think the GOP has a serious problem, particularly given the likelihood of her becoming Pres if McCain is somehow elected.

Lieberman has been caucusing with Democrats, who in turn have honored his seniority and permitted him to serve as chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.
Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, a senior Republican, said he intended to try to pry Lieberman from the Democratic fold, beginning with Monday’s cloture vote on a motion to proceed to the fiscal 2009 defense authorization bill (S 3001).
“I would like to see him vote with Republicans in September,” Specter said. “He’s practically there. That would have the consequence of giving us a Republican Senate.”
Specter said he’s ready to renew a months-long discussion with Lieberman about switching parties.
Lieberman says he still considers himself a Democrat.
“I remain a Democrat. A disappointed Democrat, but a Democrat,” he said Sept. 3, hours after his speech at the Republican National Convention on behalf of his close friend, GOP presidential nominee Sen. John McCain of Arizona.

Yeah, there's a grotesgue illogic in the GOP campaign. But political campaigns ain't about logic, they're emotional appeal. "Community organizers" hasn't been denigrated enough to become a hot button, that's my sole point.
It's a whiff for Palin, at best. At worst, it pisses people off. And the fact Obama raised $10 million, largely on the strength of her speech, tells me plenty of people are pissed off.

Agreed, but the phrase "community organizer" has never been linked to "welfare queens." It took a decade or more for welfare to go from "helping others" (the basic idea of JFK, which LBJ carried forward on the back of people like MLK) to "government handouts" to "welfare cheats." Reagan finally made that a part of public perception and policy in the '80's, 16 years after LBJ's Great Society first entered the law.
I don't think Palin is going to do a hat trick with "community organizers" in less than 60 days.

Right now, the subconscious frame that Plain fits into is "nurturing salt-of-the-Earth supermom who took on the Old Boy Network", sort of like Erin Brockovitch. We need to erase that subconscious frame and replace it with "evil lying, scheming bitch", more like Sarah Michelle Gellar in Cruel Intentions.

Christ. I pay a little less than $700 a month for health insurance, plus the deductibles and co-pays. Taxes on top of it?
I lived in Canada for a brief time in the early seventies. I'm having a hell of a time remembering why I wanted to come back.

WSJ -- "In the Middle East, Russian arms-dealing has endangered the prospects for peace and freedom in the region," the vice president said. "Russia has sold advanced weapons to the regimes in Syria and Iran. [And] some of the Russian weapons sold to Damascus have been channeled to terrorist fighters in Lebanon and Iraq."
More broadly, Russia's leaders are lapsing into "the discredited notion that any country can claim an exclusive zone of authority, to be held together by muscle and threats," Mr. Cheney said.

I don't think Palin is going to do a hat trick with "community organizers" in less than 60 days.
"Community organizer" is just code for scary black liberal/radical.
Almost every time you see someone on the news referred to as a community organizer, it is a black person who is angry about something (generally justifiably IMHO).
The underlying assumption is white-people-don't-need-no-community-organizing because they are the the true community, the true citizens -- everybody else (people of color) are just hangers-on and free-loaders and community organizers just needlessly stir them up. "Community organizer" is the new "outside agitator."

socialized finance:
NEW YORK (Fortune) -- It took two months, but the bond market called Henry Paulson's bluff: The Treasury Secretary was widely expected this weekend to announce a plan to take Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac under government control.
News reports say the mortgage giants will be placed under a "conservatorship" of their new regulator, the Federal Housing Finance Agency. That would enable the government to gradually invest funds in the troubled mortgage giants.

if your opponent puts forth an arguement ("she'd be a great president because she's a great mom") you have two ways to combat it.
1) there's no evidence that being a great mom would make a great president
or
2) no, she's a shitty mom.
either is valid.

WRT community organizing, bear in mind how very long these people fought against feeding dependent children, which was known as "welfare".
True. Welfare really gets a lot of people pissed.
However, now that the whole country is in the shitter as a direct result of republic policies and many more people are staring into an economic abyss, I think the attitudes toward assisting people in need are different.

Good morning, all.
I have a couple of questions about the earlier post.
At the Open Left post Bowers says all members of both parties regularly decry big government, but I haven't heard that theme from Obama. Good government is what I've heard him talke about, but particular reference to size.
Does anyone know that he's been cashing in on the big government buggaboo? Maybe I've missed it.
And why does the preferred stock get protected while the common stock holders go into the tank.
I get guaranteeing debt, I guess, but can't the weight be born by stockholders mores equitably?
Obvious ignorant about this stock business thing-y. Thanks for any enlightenment.

no doubt it changes but I believe the idea that there is such a thing as a real amerikin is as old as the nation.
"Spoon River Anthology" and "Winesburg, Ohio" killed it in the early 20th century. "Sex and the City" made NY much more attractive than Topeka, at least to my daughter's generation (i.e., the ones voting for Obama).
There's always a myth of the "American West." But it's appeal waxes and wanes, too.

"Almost every time you see someone on the news referred to as a community organizer, it is a black person who is angry about something"
anyone from Philadelphia will know the name ramona africa. For those who don't, she was the lone adult survivor of the Move bombing.
I once by chance got to spend time with ramona. on TV she is as angry as anyone you'll ever see. In person she is as warm and welcoming a person as I've ever met.
I told her you know I'm kind of surprised that you are not angry. I've only ever seen you angry.
she gently reminded me they only ever put her on the tv when there's something they want to talk about that she is angry about.
It is indisputable that Bush failed to meet his national guard obligations and stopped flying for some reason he has worked hard to hide. But despite the highly documented facts, the Pukes were able to get Rather fired through a nasty trick.
It is NOT indisputible, because they were able to get all the official records scrubbed by their insider cronies. Then they offered a fake "proof" as bait. A very good object lesson, that. Incontrovertible means either that she is on tape saying or doing whatever it is, or that the actions involved are a part of the public record that cannot be dissapeared. Fortunately for us, her ability to dissapear stuff from her past in Alaska is not nearly what Dim Sin's was wrt Texas, because she apparently has many enemies there in positions of power.

There's a big difference between passively sitting at home and watching a speech and 80,000 waiting for hours in the heat to enter a stadium and waiting hours more for a speech.
Kind of like raising $10 million. People put out their time & money because they believe in something.

my little town of 50,000 has EVERYTHING, and where i live on it's outskirts i see every bit of wildlife, have a well and own an acre...i only have to drive (or take our city bus) 2 miles to main street. we have a university, a hospital, a few major employers. in this state, my town is considered blue-collar and 'crappy' by the average nouveau-riche - fuck 'em, they come here for decent restaurants, as in their 'better' school districts all they have is fucking chili's

Was in a convenience store a few minutes ago. Guy behind the register (50-ish, Caucasian) was telling a friend, "Just don't know about Obama. I can't have him raising my taxes anymore."
Guy was just a clerk, not the owner.
The sarcastic response would be "I didn't realize that clerks in this store made over $250K per year." There's probably a gentler way of telling the guy that most likely his taxes would be cut in an Obama administration, but his health benefits (if he had any) would be taxed in a McCain administration.

The current track forecast certainly looks that way, but it's been advancing steadily leftwad over the last few days of model runs, and if it goes any further it will run aground traversing Cuba the long way, usually a fatal encounter for hurricanes. If the curent track stabilizes, though, it could well split the uprights and make it to the Gulf as a whopper storm. I'd say the chances of that are still south of 50% at this point, but by no means trivial.
