From below:
The most disturbing aspect of this tsunami in a tsell phone is that it's only a matter of time before some Forbidden Image(s) is circulated among schools in the tri-state area.
And then I will be subjected to local news coverage, possibly Team Coverage, featuring pearl-clutching anchorpersons throwing the coverage to an intrepid correspondent standing in the cold outside some school and breathlessly (un)covering the shocking scandal. (Usually in the dark, since even the 5:00AM newscast demands that Intrepid Correspondents broadcast from the Scene of the Outrage, even if the news crew is the only one occupying the dark parking lot in the pre-dawn hour.)
And there will doubtless be ancillary clips of offended parents in shrill transports of righteous shock and outrage, railing against the authorities for 1.) failing to prevent the catastrophe, and 2.) failing to take immediate decisive and corrective action to prevent future occurrences.
I wouldn't be surprised if the producers dragged in Exclusive Interviews with local politicians, religious leaders, and of course "expert" psychologists.
Talk about wanton public obscenity...

Erich Kaestner, 107; believed to be Germany's last World War I veteran
From the Associated Press
January 26, 2008 Erich Kaestner, a soldier believed to have been Germany's last World War I veteran, died Jan. 1 at a nursing home in Cologne at the age of 107, his son said Friday. When France's next-to-last surviving veteran from World War I, Louis de Cazenave, 110, died Jan. 20, the news made international headlines. But in Germany -- which lost both world wars and has had to cope with the shame of the Nazi genocide for more than six decades -- there is not even an organization keeping track of the remaining veterans. "That is the way history has developed," Kaestner's son, Peter, said in a telephone interview. "In Germany, in this respect, these things are kept quiet -- they're not a big deal." The news did not even trickle out into the German media until this week, and the articles were more about how Germans remember than about Kaestner's death. "The losers hide themselves in a state of self-pity and self-denial that they happily try to mitigate by forgetting," the daily Die Welt wrote Friday in its obituary of Kaestner. Der Spiegel magazine noted that "the German public was within a hair's breadth of never learning of the end of an era" until someone who had read Kaestner's death notice in a newspaper figured out who he was and updated a Wikipedia entry on the Internet. Kaestner was born in 1900, and had just graduated from high school in 1918 when he entered the army, his son said. After training, he was sent to the Western Front to fight in France, but was never sent to the front lines, he said. For Kaestner, his service during the war, in which more than 2 million German soldiers were killed, was only a small part of his long life, his son said. "He was just a soldier for a quarter to a half a year," his son said. Kaestner rejoined the military in 1939 with the outbreak of World War II, serving as a first lieutenant in ground support for the Luftwaffe, primarily in France. After the end of the war in 1945, Kaestner became a judge in Hanover. For his work as a jurist, he received Lower Saxony's Merit Cross, 1st Class. Kaestner also was honored by Germany's president for his 75-year marriage to his wife, Maria, shortly before her death in 2003 at age 102. Though Die Welt, Der Spiegel and the local publication Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung all said Kaestner was the last German veteran of World War I, it was not possible to confirm that status directly. The Defense Ministry said the German military, the Bundeswehr, "has no information available concerning World War I veterans." The Federal Military Archive and the German War Graves Commission said they had no records on possible other surviving soldiers from the war. "With the death of Erich Kaestner, no more Germans can talk about firsthand experiences" in the war, Der Spiegel wrote. "We have lost a chance -- forever."

You cannot attack the 'problem' by attacking cell phone sales, because that would be regulation of the Freee Market. Nor can you allow the 'problem' for that reason, because that would be intellectual consistency.
No, the oly possible solution is to insist that teens are utter innocents with no sexual impulses. Which is, coinicdentally, how the High Victorians treated female sexuality - "Happily, the vast majority of women are untroubled by any sexual feelings whatsoever."
Conservatives aren't conservative with money, no; but sex hasn't changed for them since Paul told them not to do that, it's nasty.

My understanding from the link is that the sex video was possibly taken without the subject's consent or knowledge.
But really, why would one feel the need to share? Does "get a room" no longer mean anything?
It's not the sex have issue with, it's the publicity. This girl, consenting to the video or not, is probably going to find certain carreer paths closed to her. That's a problem of the patriarchy, granted, but she has to live in it.
Juvenile criminal records are sealed when you become an adult. Google, on the other hand, remembers. There is not much leeway for youthful indiscretions any more.

I want to be sure I recognize the criminal act between two consenting adults the next time I see or hear about it.
Isn't it going to be fun to get to rehash the whole 'criminal' vs. 'character' Clinton conundrum?
Lying to your wife and sending her out to cry 'Conspiracy!' isn't criminal, but does demonstrate the status of your character, or lack thereof.
The fact that (a) it was in the Oval Office, and (b) the use of Vernon Jordan to get the young female a cushy job to shut her up?
Again, speaks to character.

Sorry to walk away from this abruptly, but family matters intervened. I am all for the idea of "protecting" 12-year old girls from porn to the extent that I believe that sending them unsolicited images of sex acts should be regarded as some sort of an actionable tort.
Heaven knows, if for no other reason than that it would cut down on the amount of that sort of stuff that I get sent, I would be all for it.
As to protecting them from things that they might go and look seek out for themselves, that is a pointless battle.
And as to not corrupting their understanding of sexuality with commercially produced images, the key to that is having an open discussion with them about the matter and supporting their self-esteem to the extent that they will neither get the wrong ideas about sex nor get their egos all tweaked out over seeing the images.

blerb, reefer mad
Well, I really don't know much about it, so probably I shouldn't have said anything. To be sure Japan seems to me more patriarchal on the surface, but underneath all that bullshit there is an honest acknowledgment that sex exists and is a good thing, and nudity is really nothing. Or so it seems to me.

I support John Edwards because (of the top 3, at least) I believe he will do more to help the working class than the other two. The Bush years (and even the Clinton years to some degree) have been a disaster for the working class, and it's my top priority to have someone fighting to reverse even a little of that inequity. It's a simple as that.
I shall now return to negativity, etc.

Why, I support Edwards. But you know me, and I've already exhausted my comments on who I support(ed) and why, and who I didn't support, and why. And I voted in a meaningless primary.

Don't insult Al Gore, who has been right on every issue, from the war to single payor health insurance to gay marriage to the environment. Seriously. Hillary has some seriously flawed positions. Evidence: war votes. Health care plan involves the insurance companies too much. She won't offer a definitive advocacy of equality for gays (a biggie for me, as you know). I think she'd be okay on the environment, but her ties to lobbyists are not helpful to create wholesale change, which is what we desperately need. Call me an idealist, I don't care. As long as people get turned on by watching one another have sex, there will be pornography. She'll move us toward universal health care.
Dude, we need to do more than "move toward." Seriously. Health care reform must come sooner, much sooner, than later. We are at the brink of major health care crisis in this country, and Hillary's plan doesn't do enough to deter that fact.
As I mentioned to you, the CMO of my company just authored a paper on the fact that the number one trend in health care is the end, as we know it, of employer-paid health insurance. It's pretty serious, in my mind's eye, when an employee goes from excellent coverage down to paying a monthly fee of $ 400 - $ 800 for health care, with reduced benefits (such as $ 2,500 out of pocket for hospital care per person, etc.). I could go on and on, but I can give you factual and anecdotal evidence that this is a problem that looms large over the next president. Moving toward isn't good enough.

Some people obviously like sharing sexual pictures or videos of themselves, but I'd argue that most do not. I just think it's a matter of personal preference, and as long as everything's consensual, I don't have a problem with it.

Where I have a problem with it is that teenagers have little understanding of consequences, and we do have (some) laws to protect them from having their youthful stupids bite them on their adult arse.
I would love to live in a society where the fact that a woman has had sex is not a major talking point around the lunch wagon/water cooler, where a nipple is just a nipple, etc. But we don't... yet.

Many people are more than happy to vote for a black man, as long as he's not bringing all his black friends with him. The "Obama is black" thing reinforces Obama's connections with all the black things that so many white voters have rejected (the NAACP, people talking about racism all the time, Jesse Jackson, etc.).

Moi aussi, but for the moment, for better or worse, and almost by default, it comes from the White House, as Reid and Pelosi have demonstrated over and over again. Hell, the Democrats are cooperating more with Bush than they ever did with Clinton.
Anyway....the President leads by default, and the sentiment that we need someone who will lead, not just jawbone about lovely ideas (Obama) or proclaim himself the embodiment of all Broder holds dear ("a uniter, not a divider"), is, IMHO, exactly right. Bush is leading now; but in entirely the wrong direction. OTOH, he's doing what he did in Texas, only with the power of the POTUS, so why is anyone just now surprised? (900+ lies? No shit, Sherlock!)
We need someone who knows what they're going to do on Day 1, and someone with whom we agree about that direction.

"That son of a bitch told me he'd burned all the prints..."
At least nine Afghan police officers and a civilian were killed early Thursday in a firefight between American forces and the officers in Ghazni Province, just south of the capital, local officials said.
The American forces were searching houses in a village on the outskirts of Ghazni town and blew open the gates of a house, according to local Afghan officials. District police officers heard the explosion and rushed to the scene, suspecting that the Taliban were in the area, but were themselves mistaken for Taliban and shot by the American soldiers, the officials said. Aircraft supporting the operation fired on one of the police cars.
The killings set off protests in the town on Thursday afternoon, and demonstrators blocked the main highway and prevented a government delegation from reaching the town from a nearby airfield, local officials said.
“Another big cruelty was made by American forces this morning,” said Khial Muhammad Hussaini, a member of Parliament from the province who was among the elders and legislators who had traveled to the town to try to calm people and persuade them to reopen the highway.

They are blatantly unconstitutional if the Supreme Court so rules (the legal standard for "unconstitutional" is, under our legal system, theirs to declare).
So, rejecting the premise, the statement is unfounded. There is a legitimate social purpose in protecting minors from exploitation. Hence, they cannot be held to most contracts; their interests must be protected in divorce and custody battles; child abuse is illegal, even by parents; child labor can be strictly controlled, and even outlawed; and pornography involving "underage" (a term set by law) persons can be illegal.

I want a leader. Our current congress has proven to be ineffectual. The people in this country aren't informed enough to realize that their votes can prompt wholesale change with shifts in the Senate and in the House, unfortunately, and the folks who work tirelessly at the grassroots level are marginalized. I know, at least here in Michigan, I feel completely left out of the process this year...
Yet I vote, I am on a first name basis with my local state rep and talk to him about local issues for change, etc. It's a slow-moving beast, the political process.

Less understanding than social custom, again. Child labor wasn't banned in this country until after TR's administration. He refused to meet Mother Jones and her Children's Crusade, but she ultimately prevailed in Congress (after TR, IIRC, but I could be wrong). And "teenager" was almost augmented about a decade ago with "tweens," which was less about "self-understanding" than it was about marketing, because such persons were identified by what they bought in the marketplace (goods, records, movies, DVD's, iPods, etc.) than by a new theory of psychology.

I'd asked earlier who/where the young grad student was who being sentenced to death for downloading un-Islamic articles. This may be it--not sentenced, just religious leaders demanding death sentence. ChiDy around? Is this what KO mentioned last night? Does he read Correntewire.com?
Anyway, she posted this:
Reporters Without Borders is very worried about the pressure being placed on the authorities by conservative religious leaders in the case of Sayed Perwiz Kambakhsh, a young journalist in the northern province of Balkh [Afghanistan] who has been detained since late October on charges of blasphemy and defaming Islam. The Council of Mullahs says he should be
sentenced to death.
“The calls for the death penalty for Kambakhsh highlight the growing influence of fundamentalist groups on intellectual debate,” the organisation
said. “The blasphemy charges are an ill-disguised attempt to hide the desire of the local authorities to restrict press freedom.”
A reporter for the newspaper Jahan-e Naw (“The New World”) and ajournalism student at Balkh university, Kambakhsh, 23, was arrested on
27 October. Articles on the role of women in Muslim society were found at his home.
Reporters Without Borders is also very concerned about Ghows Zalmay, a
former journalist and attorney-general's spokesman, who is being held for publishing a translation of the Koran into Dari. He was arrested in early November after conservative religious leaders said the translation was "un-Islamic" and misinterpreted verses about adultery and begging.

Awwwh. That makes me sad. My dad's favorite show of all time. He'd watch it and laugh until he'd cry. Today is the first anniversary of his death.
I woke up this morning and read the paper. I followed a front page story to page 2, and I did a double take. At the bottom of the page, there was a color pic of my dad and an "in memorium" that, apparently, my sister did. She didn't list a name, but she's kind of showy like that. That must have cost a fortune (I work with the paper in my job, and I know what 8th page color ads cost...). Normally, "in memoriums" are found in the Obit section...
Ironically, my dad would roll over in his ashes. He did not like fanfare...

I don't know if you missed this earlier, but I owe you a big mea culpa.
Believe it or not, until this afternoon it had never occurred to me that my use of the phrase That Woman about Hill could be taken as an echo of the the Lewinsky thing.
As far as I was concerned, it was just a phrase out of an old 30s drawing room farce by Noel Coward or somebody.
Really -- it never crossed my mind why it might be taken as offensive.

Actually, when I mentioned I was offended by it, you immediately stopped using it so need to apologize on that score. Or any other. As long as we keep to the issues and remember that we're all gonna have to live with the eventual candidate AND each other, no need to apologize for arguing.
