GravatarMothers' Day Proclamation: Julia Ward Howe, Boston, 1870
Mother's Day was originally started after the Civil War, as a protest to the carnage of that war, by women who had lost their
sons. Here is the original Mother's Day Proclamation from 1870.

Arise, then, women of this day! Arise all women who have hearts, whether our baptism be that of water or of fears! Say firmly: "We will not have great questions decided by irrelevant agencies. Our husbands shall not come to us, reeking
with carnage, for caresses and applause. Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have been able to teach
them of charity, mercy and patience. We women of one country will be too tender of those of another country to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs. From the bosom of the devastated earth a voice goes up with our own.
It says "Disarm, Disarm! The sword of murder is not the balance of justice." Blood does not wipe our dishonor nor violence indicate possession. As men have often forsaken the plow and the anvil at the summons of war, let women now leave all that may be left of home for a great and earnest day of counsel. Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead. Let them then solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means whereby the great human family can live in peace, each bearing after their own time the sacred impress, not of Caesar, but of God. In the name of womanhood and of humanity, I earnestly ask that a general congress of women without limit of nationality may be appointed and held at some place deemed most convenient and at the earliest period consistent with its objects, to promote the alliance of the different nationalities, the amicable settlement of international questions, the great and general interests of peace.

A spokeswoman for the FDA said the agency is looking at finding a way to give the committee the information it requested 10 days ago without violating confidentiality agreements involving proprietary information.

The real problem was that the infrastructure for mass evacuation was sadly never prepared, in "nobody could have imagined" fashion.

GravatarFormer Welsh Secretary Peter Hain has warned Labour it risks being left behind by a "new, modern Wales".

He criticised some in the Welsh party for blaming their council election losses on problems at a UK level.

He admitted the 10p tax issue had been "toxic", but said his party was not keeping pace with the "incredibly fast" rate of change across Wales.

The Neath MP said Welsh Labour would continue to suffer defeats unless it became the "party of aspiration".

Mr Hain spoke after Labour was battered at the elections on 1 May, losing overall control of six of the 22 Welsh councils and retaining an overall majority in just two.

Labour performed worse in Wales than in England, where the party lost only three out of 137 councils.

He is publishing a pamphlet arguing that Welsh Labour needs to face its failure and keep up with social changes, and told The Politics Show in Wales that two successive poor election results showed that "something in particular is afoot in Wales."

- Bill Clinton

In other words, if you support Barack, you don't need/want:
- a President
- to turn the economy around
- to restore the middle class
- to give poor people a chance to work their way into the middle class
- to give our children a better future
- to restore our standing in the world and the war in Iraq
- to do it in a way that rebuilds our military and stands up for America's security and standing around the world

Bill Clinton is a Talking Head...

In the last few months, I'm seeing a huge, for this neighborhood, number of homes for rent. Today I drove to work from Son's and DiL's place along 16th Street. Every apartment building has signs saying: "Move in Now!" or "We Take Pets!" or something similar. Wherever these folks are going, they don't seem to be renting.

GravatarThis is from GOS, I hesitate to ask, but is this provable?

While the Keating Five scandal that earned John McCain a slap on the wrist from the Senate Ethics Committee for exercising "poor judgement," brings to mind McCain's part in delaying the government's seizure of the Lincoln Savings and Loan at the behest campaign contributor and personal friend, Charles Keating, a delay that eventually cost U.S. taxpayers $2.6 billion, what's rarely mentioned is his wife and father-in-law's involvement with Keating for a...you guessed it...land deal. After McCain's role in the Keating Five scandal was revealed, McCain paid back $13,433 for flights he and his family had taken on Keatings private jet, and he eventually donated $112,000 (the amount he had received from Keating) to the U.S. treasury, but his wife and father-in-law, who had invested $359,000 in a Keating-owned strip mall held onto their investment, later selling it for $15 million.
