I think the answer is no. They Bush Administration, to the best of my knowledge, has managed to insulate all contractors from any liabilities for their actions in Iraq. I would LOVE to be proven wrong but in my reading and research, I believe I am correct.

GravatarSomeone should hang for this, and I don't even believe in the death penalty. And since the government won't do it, citizens, on their own should [bannable].

GravatarMAKING FRIENDS ALL OVER

US Killed 47 Afghan Civilians

A US air strike in eastern Afghanistan on Sunday killed
47 civilians, 39 of them women and children, an Afghan
government investigating team says.

Reports at the time said that 20 people were killed
in the airstrike in Nangarhar province. The US military
said they were militants. But local people said the dead
were wedding party guests.

Correspondents say the issue of civilian casualties
is hugely sensitive in Afghanistan.

President Hamid Karzai has said that no civilian casualty
is acceptable. Karzai set up a nine-man commission to
look into Sunday's incident.

Turley: "It may be time for the US to be held internationaly to a tribunal... We have become like Serbia where an international tribunal has to come to force us to live by the rule of law."

But it's those in the middle that are under attack. Gravataryou left out that Republicans are also in favor of 'tort reform' -ProfWombat

like these bastions of the Republican brand:

The DeLay family lawsuit, brought against the manufacturer and distributor of a mechanical part that the family blamed for the death of Rep. Tom DeLay's father, Charles DeLay, sought at least $15.3 million in actual and punitive damages in a Texas product liability lawsuit filed in 1990. Charles DeLay died after an accident, in which a trolley that he and his brother, Jerry, built, malfunctioned.
-------------------
"Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., says that the No. 1 health care crisis in his state is medical lawsuit abuse and in the past he's called for a $250,000 cap on non-economic damage awards or awards for pain and suffering. "We need to do something now to fix the medical liability problem in this country," he declared at a rally in Washington D.C., this past spring. But Santorum's wife sued a doctor for $500,000 in 1999. She claimed that a botched spinal manipulation by her chiropractor led to back surgery, pain and suffering, and sued for twice the amount of a cap Santorum has supported.

GravatarHow do you sleep at night "liberals".

A blow job from Nancy Reagan?

GravatarI have also learned that Kellogg Brown & Root knew of this very hazard since at least February 10, 2007 – 11 months before Ryan’s death – when they conducted an inspection of the facilities where Ryan lived. The deficiencies KBR noted on that date included, among others, the fact that the building’s main circuit panel, the secondary feeder panel, and the water tank were not grounded. The wiring leading into the secondary electrical panel was not sized properly for the main breakers, did not have proper thermal coating, and did not meet either U.S. or British electrical standards.

And Susan Collins blows it off. Like she does every other chance at oversight. And Joey L.

GravatarI'm confused- am I supposed to feel badly for not wanting troops fighting in a pointless occupation in my name to die a senseless death due to nothing more than shoddy work owing to Republican malfeasance and war profiteering?

How about if I put this flag pin on my lapel - does that make me look less like I hate the troops and want them to die?

GravatarWhen I first heard of this incident (and that an identical accident had happened before this incident), there was no question in my mind that it originated in negligence and that the problem continued because of indifference to that negligence.

In a place like Iraq, where there's a preponderance of sandy soil and not much moisture in the soil, it's difficult to establish a good surface ground, but, it's not impossible. It's just more work. It means driving larger ground stakes deeper into the soil, and if that's impractical for each subfeed, then tying all the various grounds together at a central location.

It also means that a simple device, in common use, was not employed--a ground fault interrupter. Those won't work properly without a functional surface ground. That means the entire system was designed not to use surface grounds, so any conductive material in contact with the soil became the ground--such as water pipes and water flowing through them.

And, it's criminal negligence.

Also reading a great book: 'Postwar' by Tony Judt, on Europe after 1945. Wonderfully written, clear-eyed, something new on just about every page. Could use him a bit further to the left, and a bit more mindful of changes in America, which affected Europe a little in the interval in question, and, to some extent, mirrored the changes there. But generally am in agreement with him...

In 2006, the latest year for which numbers are available, the drug industry accounted for about 30 percent of the association’s $62.5 million in financing. About half of that money went to drug advertisements in psychiatric journals and exhibits at the annual meeting, and the other half to sponsor fellowships, conferences and industry symposiums at the annual meeting.

...One of the doctors named by Mr. Grassley is the association’s president-elect, Dr. Alan F. Schatzberg of Stanford, whose $4.8 million stock holdings in a drug development company raised the senator’s concern. In a telephone interview, Dr. Schatzberg said he had fully complied with Stanford’s rigorous disclosure policies and federal guidelines that pertained to his research.

The Kiss
It must appear accidental,
betrayed neither by your gestures
nor the easy motion of your skirt.
The light is just so.

This is the moment - not
consummation, decisive and finite,
but those boundless seconds before
when you can draw after out from hiding.

Do not move forward, do not move
a finger. Waiting is perfection,
a rapture of your own devising,
these shallow breaths taken out of time,

before the sinking in of things,
before the body ruins everything.

Will he still hate teh Favre?

If you happen to play Fantasy next month, Darren McFadden would be a 2nd round steal.

GravatarThey had an Ice Bowl back in the late 30's, I think.

Da Bears and it really might have been the Packers.

They changed shoes at haltime from cleats to sneakers, IIRC.

Gravatarone last example on how to deal with the heat

Of course, it's even easier when you have someone else to wheel you around...

GravatarThe Autumn Wind is a pirate
Blustering in from sea
With a rollicking song he sweeps along
Swaggering boisterously
His face is weather beaten
He wears a hooded sash
With his silver hat about his head
And a bristly black moustache
He growls as he storms the country
A villain big and bold
And the trees all shake and quiver and quake
As he robs them of their gold
The Autumn wind is a Raider
Pillaging just for fun
He'll knock you round and upside down
And laugh when he's conquered and won

Hee, that's kinda what Ed told me 2 weeks ago when he promised me a visit from the FBI.

I still haven't seen those guys.

Call me crazy, but I don't feel real good about the whole win a free trip to Denver thing. I'd rather see my Senators stand firm on Runnymede and the fucking Bill of Rights.

GravatarDWD: but, fact is, you can't talk about yesterday, or, for that matter, tomorrow, without talking about the present...
ProfWombat

Er, yes I think you can but it takes away from your work and intelligent people make statements like, "This is really good, and I am enjoying it but I wish he could be more cognizant of today's situation...."

All snark aside, yes, I think you can. (And I am really tired and three Percocets since 6:00 in, but here goes)

One of the danger that movie makers face is when they are filming they really have to avoid referencing things like prices of common objects: gasoline, food, clothing and such. These items are volatile in price. When a patron of the film is watching it, the director or the producer does not want this person to begin laughing over something ludicrous like gasoline selling for $.289 a gallon - it detracts from the film.

So a writer does the same thing. If they reference the present, then the care of present are presented as timeposts for the reader. Perhaps the author is smart enough to choose the proper ones. But they may not be. If they pick the wrong ones, the reader will be laughing up their sleeve at the writer referencing something silly that is unimaginable as a problem.

Example: if, in fifteen years time, the Iraq War does happen (and I really do not think this will happen) to be a great idea. The world will find itself in a new burst of freedom. Iran will have capitulated and Iraq and Iran will have reconciled their differences and joined together as a the first two states of the United Arabian States. Qatar and UAE are in the process of petitioning for membership and so on.

THe author would then look ridiculous talking about what a fucking disaster this war has been

GravatarJim Cramer once bragged about how much money you could make since Rummy was privatizin' everything

GravatarWhat team will Favre actually suit up for this fall?

It will be whatever team McSame says he told the NVN's about.

Did they mention the free tour of Silverado S&L?

Mr. "Hold on to your Bear Stearns stock" Cramer?

That worked out good.

GravatarJim Cramer once bragged about how much money you could make since Rummy was privatizin' everything

Why not privatize Rummy? .... Oh wait, maybe they did that.

GravatarOf course my current Senators are "moderate" "bi-partisan" tools of the oligarchy.

GravatarGreetings from San Diego, fellow bats and batesses!

Gravatarand the fucking Bill of Rights.

"The right of consenting adults to fuck in a manner of their choosing shall not be abridged"

If only....

GravatarMy guess is that there's a lot of brokering going on from the Pack this weekend - they probably don't want Favre playing for a team on the GB schedule this season.

Favre probably has a list of teams he won't play for - and a list of ones he wants to go for (Seattle, with Holmgren, is another thought).

That the Bears and Vikes both want QBs makes it a tough situation - they can offer the $$ and competition...But if Favre goes with either one, expect wholesale effigy burning of #4.

Not really my thing. Been watching Davis destroy good people for many years though.

GravatarI remember reading some old football book as a kid, and they had a picture of this dude name Vic Janowicz punting, and the entire field was white from the snow.

You don't feel good about it? Because Ed Hale says its an illegal raffle?

I'd be sweating that if I was Barak.

Not

GravatarThey had an Ice Bowl back in the late 30's, I think.

Da Bears and it really might have been the Packers.

Bears and the New York Giants at the Polo Grounds. Giants changed shoes at HT and won going away.

GravatarThe Chicago Bears beat the Washington Redskins in the league championship game, seventy three to nothing back in 1940.

GravatarI have to pause a second for this insane Ed Hale guy. I hope they keep him away from sharp objects, motor vehicles and....well, voting booths.

Anyway, I saw this story about the faulty wiring on CNN and couldn't believe my ears. If it's the same one I heard, they first told the mother her son was holding a small appliance in the shower.

Adding stupidity to tragedy.

GravatarHow can you claw your way to the championship game, and then lose 73-0?

How in the fuck can that happen in major sports?

It'd be like the 1927 Yankees being swept in four.

GravatarMr. "Hold on to your Bear Stearns stock" Cramer?

Not that I followed his advice, but I remember when he said of JDSU - "That stands for 'Just Don't Sell Us'.

God knows, how far it fell after that.

I can't stand that SOB. He sucked up to Bush, he likes Phil Gramm and said so this week...and that's barely a start.

GravatarOn inauguration day, Americans will collectively slap their heads when Bush tries to give Michelle a terrorist jab and instead drunkenly pokes her in the breast.

This made me laugh.

GravatarDWD: well, there are anachronisms that distract, and there are points of view that may well be rendered absurd by event. But you, today, as an author, would, inevitably, take your current attitudes about war, journalism, teaching and so forth into your work. They'd reflect your life and times. And you can't leave them entirely behind. Alfred North Whitehead made the same point discussing Gibbon on Rome and religion, noting that he was writing from an English perspective as a man of his time, and that a twentieth-century Roman historian would have a different emphasis.

GravatarCramer. I wonder if anyone bothers to do ones of those "If you listened to Cramer" follow up stories.

Say you had $100,000 to invest and you followed Cramer's EXACT advice. Starting in 2003, how much money would you have in 2008?

GravatarBob Herbert's direct about Phil Gramm and John McCain tonight:

In the real world, somewhere outside of Phil Gramm’s field of vision, increasing numbers of Americans are working two and three jobs to make ends meet; struggling families are worried sick in July about what it will cost to heat their homes in January; food costs and home foreclosures are soaring; the job market has tanked; and the stock markets are running with the bears.

In that kind of atmosphere, it’s beyond obscene to have to listen to some platinum-card-carrying fat cat tell us, in a tone dripping with condescension: “You’ve heard of mental depression; this is a mental recession.”

...The Democrats, timid as always, should be pounding the populist pavement from one coast to another, explaining how the reckless and deliberately inequitable policies of the past several years have gotten the U.S. into this terrible fix.

GravatarI'd love to see Favre in purple and gold.

GravatarAnd Jim Cramer is a jackass.

GravatarIt would be a tragedy of cosmic ironic proportions if all of KBR's greedy warmongering executives suddenly died of electrocution, due to shoddy construction of their headquarters building.

But after 7 long years of Bush and Cheney, I am more convinced than ever that evil people almost never get what they deserve.

GravatarSorry Suzie. It's just business.

Now, eat a BigMac and shut-the-fuck-up, or the "terrorists" win.
