MANIMAL! - The government is facing a resignation from the cabinet if Gordon Brown refuses to allow Labour ministers to vote against contentious proposals to allow medical research on human-animal embryos.
The Welsh secretary, Paul Murphy, is one of several Catholic senior government figures pressing the prime minister to allow all MPs a free vote on the human embryology and fertilisation bill later this spring. Des Browne, the defence secretary, and Ruth Kelly, the transport secretary, have indicated privately that they want to vote against the proposals and will at the very least abstain.
The cabinet revolt comes as one of Britain's most senior Catholics accuses Brown of plotting a "monstrous" attack on human life by pressing ahead with the bill. Cardinal Keith O'Brien, the leader of the Scottish Catholic church, says the legislation would allow "grotesque" and "hideous" procedures to create hybrid embryos for experimentation - measures other European countries had outlawed. In his Easter homily in Edinburgh tomorrow, O'Brien will claim that the human fertilisation and embryology bill attacks human rights, human dignity and human life.
Comes out of triumphalist excitement over the massive, unprecedented organization campaigns of the World Wars, which are generally fondly remembered here (and had an immediate overshadowing presense in the sixties).
We don't do small and we don't do nuance.

What you're saying makes sense, and yes every vote deserves to be counted, but you're distorting the facts.
The facts are:
1. Florida and Michigan were warned repeatedly that their delegates would not be seated if they changed their primary date without permission from the DNC.
2. Nonetheless, they tried to game the primary calendar.
3. Both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama agreed not to campaign in these two states.
4. If they get re-votes and are seated at the convention, it undermines the entire primary calendar system, and sets a very bad precedent for future cycles during which other states [like my state, NC, with a current May primary] want to game the calendar too and think they'll be able to get away with it in the end.

Sure, it is not fair. What's the solution? Tell the people of Michigan and Florida not to re-elect their current Governors and local reps next election cycle to send this message: don't do stuff that undermines our votes in political primaries!

Yes, it does leave a good impression. It shows that the Democratic party is a party that follows the rules and will not be influenced by Republican governors and state legislatures [as in the case of florida] to undermine their primary election system.

OT: Wanted for unique opportunity: brilliant, physically fit people. Must be cool under pressure, willing to work away from home and have a good head for heights. Free uniform included.
The wording might be a little different, but when the advert appears in newspapers in the next few weeks, it will mark the beginning of one of the most exciting recruitment drives in more than 40 years. The European Astronaut Centre (EAC) needs more astronauts, and from them it expects to choose the first European to walk on the moon.
The EAC, part of the European Space Agency (ESA), last went looking for astronauts 15 years ago. The recruitment comes at a time of enormous change in human space exploration. The space shuttle, until now a workhorse for transporting crews to and from the International Space Station, is due to be mothballed in 2010 or shortly after. And the lifetime of the space station itself is only guaranteed until 2015.

You know, it'd be cool if we had a national primary day, just like election day. Then states wouldn't go crazy trying to hold their elections earlier and other states wouldn't be treated as irrelevent later on in the process.
Of course, this would have side effects, like it would be impossible for an underdog to grab momentum early and build it up to the convention, but really, is that necessarily a good thing?

"George W. Bush's Easter Weekend radio address, in which the Jefferson's successor as president of the United States, quoted from and repeatedly referenced the Christian Bible. The address was more religious in tone and text than those delivered today even by the executives of states that identify as having a national church.
Sounding more like a pastor than a president, Bush spoke of remembering "a sacrifice that transcended the grave and redeemed the world" and "the gift that took away death's sting and opened the door to eternal life."
Bush even declared, with a bias more toward the "Onward Christian Soldiers" camp than the "thou shalt not kill" teachings of the faith, that "America is blessed with the world's greatest military..."
Because we all know how Jesus promoted the Roman military and extolled the fact that they were the world's greatest army.
(BTW: Jesus's sacrifice had no influence on the Buddhists, Hindus and a gazillion other religions on this planet.)
Bush is a oily stain on our Constitution.

If it's not an "election," can the parties demand that no state or local propositions be included? Can the states and counties refuse to pay to count the votes?
The DNC is very lenient in allowing the states to do what they want. All they asked is that they not hold a primary before February 5. That is it. How fucking hard is that for you to understand and the states to comply with. One simple fucking request and obnoxious fucks like you still cannot grasp it. The DNC could say don't link this with state elections. They could say party members only. All they said was nothing before Feb 5.

Cyprus came a step closer to healing the wounds of division yesterday after the leaders of its Greek and Turkish communities pledged to rid the island of one of its most enduring symbols of partition and relaunch long-stalled reunification talks.
Emerging from more than five hours of talks in the UN-patrolled buffer zone that has split Cyprus since 1974, President Demetris Christofias said negotiations between the two sides would be revived with "optimism and goodwill".
"I look forward to having in three months' time results which will help both of us have a dialogue under the auspices of the [UN] secretary general," he said. "We have to be optimistic - we agreed that we shall work together in goodwill."
It was the first meeting between the two men since Christofias, the veteran leader of Cyprus' communist Akel party, was elected president three weeks ago.

Dick Cheney, the US vice president, has said that Washington will not pressure Israel to take steps that will threaten its security and expressed hope for a "new beginning" for the Palestinian people in their own state.
Cheney, who is on a 10-day trip to the Middle East, arrived in Jerusalem on Saturday after spending two days in Saudi Arabia.
"America's commitment to Israel's security is enduring and unshakable, as is our commitment to Israel's right to defend itself always against terrorism, rocket attacks and other forces dedicated to Israel's destruction,'' Cheney told reporters shortly after arriving in Jerusalem.

Palestinian factions Fatah and Hamas have agreed to continue reconciliation talks after a personal plea by Ali Abdullah Saleh, the Yemeni president.
Negotiations were on the brink of collapse after both sides disagreed on the agenda interpreting a Yemeni plan to end a rift triggered when Hamas seized Gaza in June last year.
While none of the differences were resolved, the two factions reached an understanding to hold further negotiations after consulting their respective leaders.
Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, said both sides were hoping "for a positive outcome".

I just watched the 'Oh My' video and all I can say is . . .
That's not to say that these small differences are reasons to choose one of the candidates over the other. But to threaten either to sit the election or vote for McCain or vote for Nader if your candidate doesn't win the nomination shows as clearly as anything that one's ego-investment in one's candidate far outstrips one's interest in public policy and governance. If this really is one's position after calm second-thought, I see no other way to describe it.

From the Rich piece, more like this plz MSM:
Troubling as it is that he conflates Shiite Iran with Sunni terrorists, it’s even more bizarre that he doesn’t acknowledge the identity of Iran’s actual ally in Iraq — the American-sponsored Shiite government led by Nuri al-Maliki. Only two weeks before the Iraqi prime minister welcomed Mr. McCain to Baghdad, he played host to a bubbly state visit by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Whatever Mrs. Clinton’s or Mr. Obama’s inconsistencies about how to wind down the war, they are both models of coherence next to Mr. McCain. He keeps saying the surge is a “success,” but he can’t explain why that success keeps us trapped in Iraq indefinitely. He never says precisely what constitutes that “victory” he keeps seeing around the corner. His repeated declaration that he will only bring home the troops “with honor” is a Vietnam acid flashback recycled as a non sequitur. Our troops have already piled up more than enough honor in their five years of service under horrific circumstances. Meanwhile, as Al Qaeda proliferates in Afghanistan and Pakistan, a survey by Foreign Policy magazine of 3,400 active and retired American officers finds that 88 percent believe that the Iraq war has “stretched the U.S. military dangerously thin.”

European colonisation of South America resulted in a dramatic shift from a native American population to a largely mixed one, a genetic study has shown.
It suggests male European settlers mated with native and African women, and slaughtered the men.
But it adds that areas like Mexico City "still preserve the genetic heritage" because these areas had a high number of natives at the time of colonisation.
The findings appear in the journal Public Library of Science Genetics.
The international team of researchers wrote: "The history of Latin America has entailed a complex process of population mixture between natives and recent immigrants across a vast geographic region.
"Few details are known about this process or about how it shaped the genetic make-up of Latin American populations."
'Clear signature'
The study examined 249 unrelated individuals from 13 Mestizo populations (people from a mixed European/native American origin) in seven countries, ranging from Chile in the south to Mexico in the north.
We have heard a man assert that the viscosity of the vaginal mucus goes from slippery to sticky,

The diseases did that. The offspring of white male/native female couplings were more likely to have resistances to all the European diseases. Since native male/white female couplings were pretty much unheard of, as much from a lack of white females on the ground to begin with as social taboos, this makes sense.

Since native male/white female couplings were pretty much unheard of
unheard of? yes. happened as often as brown woman/white man couplings? i'm not so sure. women are just as likely to practice fidelity as men. and there are plenty of ways to convince him "it's yours, honey." like, "oh, my grandfather had eyes/hair like that, don't worry. the baby has your toes, i can tell!" yes, twas harder for a woman to "get away" with cheating in the period in question, but i never accept the idea that women don't do it as much as men, in any time or any ethnic group.

People from Eastern Finland are blonder (the cold-yellow type which is almost white and stays your whole life). People from the West Coast tend not to be as blond. Probably all the settlements of Germans and so on along the coast.

Has anybody wondered if not seating the two states or not allowing them to vote determined by a non state entity is even constitutional. Since elections are totally up to the individual states (at least before the first Bush election in Florida) I am curious about that.

Pretty much describes all my Finnish family members. But then, my grandmother used to talk of how she hated how the Russians would raid her village. So yeah, eastern.

2. The discharge that is characteristic of this inflammation.
You can also use gleety. Aren't you glad you asked?

i always kiss you first before presenting my clitors for worship, ntodd.
k&y, i get "sticky." that's what it's like after the hot and nasty is mostly done, you know, on your leg and sheets and whatnot. but clumpy-in the middle of the act-clingy sticky? um, that's when i say, "where is the dental dam? you know what, never mind. just call this number."

Well, at first, at least, there just weren't any white wimmen to be had. It was all male soldiers having their way with the locals. Coupled with disease and outright slaughter of males, it would explain why so few native Y chromosomes survived. The natives didn't have that much of a chance to spread their chromosomes about.
Obviously you're going to get intermixing of genes eventually, but the European Y got a head start in doing that.

Cuban Bassist Cachao Dies; Mambo Pioneer
MIAMI (AP) - Cuban bassist and composer Israel "Cachao" Lopez, who is credited with pioneering the mambo style of music, died Saturday. He was 89.
Known simply as Cachao, the Grammy-winning musician had fallen ill in the past week and died surrounded by family members at Coral Gables Hospital, spokesman Nelson Albareda said.
Cachao left communist Cuba and came to the United States in the early 1960s. He continued to perform into his late 80s, including a performance after the death of trombonist Generoso Jimenez in September 2007.
