Prosecutors Seek 25 Years for Duke Briber, "War Profiteer"
Federal prosecutors say Brent Wilkes is a war profiteer, a lecher and a liar whose decade-long bribery of former Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham netted him $46 million.
For that, and for orchestrating the largest congressional bribery scheme in history, they say the Poway defense contractor should be sentenced to 25 years in prison.... http://

Youngest DWD asked me if he could GIVE his old car to friends of theirs (Youngest DWD and his girlfriend, the lovely Miss Jennah) as they did not have a car but they both have jobs and they have a baby and could not afford one. Yes. From Think Progress yesterday:
Director Doug Liman, in charge of putting together the biopic on Valerie Plame, has confirmed that actress Nicole Kidman will be playing the outed CIA agent. “She’s perfect if you’ve ever met Valerie,” said Liman. No word yet on the actor filling the role of Vice President Cheney.

Here's a shocker: another anti-Hitlery tirade makes the top of the Daily Obama "recommended" list!
Hillary is correct to have praised the passage of NAFTA and Bill should be proud that he got that done during his administration. Where Hillary deserves criticism is in lacking the courage to defend the law and what it means, long term, to our relations with the rest of the American nations.
Barack should be criticized as well for using NAFTA as some kind of evil law.
I am not an unabashed "free trade" advocate but trade between nations, when it expands, can bring posperity to all. It is one of the reasons that the EU is doing as well as it is. As always, we should be careful that we support fair trade, not free trade.
If a person is concerned about illegal immigration from Mexico, open trade with them is the best solution.

I have a Kirby from the 70's and it does not use a bag. It has a permanent bag that you empty through the bottom. You loosen the bracket and fold back the plastic piece on the bottom and reach into the zippered part and push the stuff down. Molly, does the thing have any kind of a name or model number on it? If so, check with kirby.com for supplies - as to bagless, in the '70s? My memory says no. That's a recent sort of design. Hoovers, Eurekas, Kirbys, all had bags. Does yours have any kind of a zipper or a clasp of any kind? Is it an upright? If so, the bag is in the bag as it were. So now inflation is considered an indicator of economic strength?
Goldwater was actively opposed to the Birchers here in town - they were scary as hell. Tried very hard to take over the public schools in various ways. They're the ones who now claim that Goldwater was a lefty. Goldwater thought they were just insane.

Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them.
.....
The religious factions that are growing throughout our land are not using their religious clout with wisdom.... I'm frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in 'A,' 'B,' 'C,' and 'D.' Just who do they think they are?... I will fight them every step of the way if they try to dictate their moral convictions to all Americans in the name of "conservatism."

Well, in all honesty, I'm not so enamored of those. I kinda like "The Eternals" more. No disrespect meant to Kirby, but he obviously was sick as shit of being screwed again and again at that point,
Speaking of being sick, he evidently was going blind in one eye during the latter portion of his career and it apparently had a significant effect on the quality of his artwork.
Mark Evanier mentioned that on a discussion board I frequent.

If winning in '08 were dependent on Dems alone, I'd be worried - I know millions more are voting in Dem primaries than in repukkke ones but I don't even think that that will be the difference - I'm not kidding when I say "silent majority bitches!" - there are millions who are not tuned to the daily BS who never listen but will make their way to the polls and pull the lever for whomever the Dem candidate is - they know they've been lied to and that the prez has been a dishonourable lying prick
I know, it doesn't make any sense for a million reasons.

SPIEGEL: It could change society, couldn?t it?
Roth: Yes, it could. It would say something about this country, and it would be a marvelous thing. I don?t know whether it?s going to happen. I rarely vote for anybody who wins. It?s going to be the kiss of death if you write in your magazine that I?m going to vote for Barack Obama. Then he?s finished!
SPIEGEL: The discussions around Obama remind us of your figure Coleman Silk, the hero of ?The Human Stain,? who is black with unusually light skin and then invents a Jewish biography. What we mean is the questions of belonging, of right and wrong behavior. Is Barack Obama black enough?
Roth: I know this discussion goes on, but I think it will disappear if he gets the nomination. The reality of his running will wash that away. Anybody who?s half white and half black is considered black anyway. That?s one drop of blood.
SPIEGEL: For whites to consider him black, yes. But the question is whether the blacks consider him black.
Roth: They will once the election goes on. If he gets the nomination.
SPIEGEL: Do you actually believe that Obama could change Washington or could change politics?
Roth: I?m interested in what merely his presence would be. You know, who he is, where he comes from, that is the change. That is the same thing with Hillary Clinton, just who she is would create a gigantic change. As for all that other rhetoric about change, change, change -- it?s pure semantics, it doesn?t mean a thing. They?ll respond to particular situations as they arise.
SPIEGEL: Are you interested in the Clintons as a couple? Are they literary figures?
Roth: Oh, this is the soap opera side. They?re tremendously aggressive, I think they?ll say or do anything actually that they can get away with, but no, they don?t interest me as a couple. Bill Clinton was interesting as the president -- I don?t know what he is now. I think they can overplay that hand, being aggressive, and people will be irritated by it.

SPIEGEL: What will remain of the current president, George W. Bush? Could he be forgotten once he leaves office?
Phillip Roth: He was too horrendous to be forgotten. There will be an awful lot written about this. And there?s a lot to be written about the war. There?s a lot to be written about what he did with Reaganism, since he went much further than Reagan. So he won?t be forgotten. Someone has said he?s the worst American president we've ever had. I think that?s true.
SPIEGEL: Why?
Roth: Well, the biggest thing would be the war, the deceptions surrounding the entrance into the war. The absolute cynicism that surrounds the deception. The cost of the war, the Treasury and the lives of the Americans. It?s hideous. There is nothing quite like it. The next thing would be the attitude towards global warming, which is a global crisis, and they were utterly indifferent, if not hostile, to any attempt to address it. And so on and so on and so on and so on. So he?s done a lot of harm.

NAFTA has been a unmitigated disaster for the midwestern states.
To be honest, the problems in the Midwest started long before NAFTA, back in the 1980s, maybe even 1970s, when the trend to move wholesale to the South started. Shorted-sighted politicians there promised companies cheap cheap cheap taxes at the cost of shorting their own social programs.
Only to be skunked themselves when companies decided they weren't cheap enough and moved to Mexico, and now to SE Asia. Or like Toyota, decided they didn't like the results of poor education they didn't want to pay taxes to support and moved to Ontario.

PIEGEL: Since your book is set in that week during the 2004 elections, can you explain why Americans voted for Bush once again?
Roth: I suspect it was the business of being in a war and not wanting to change, and political stupidity. Why does anybody elect anybody? I thought highly of John Kerry when he began, but he couldn?t stand up against Bush. The Democrats aren?t brutes, which is too bad, because the Republicans are brutes. Brutes win.
SPIEGEL:?Exit Ghost? is a stage direction from Shakespeare.
Roth: It appears in three plays. I found it in ?Macbeth.? I was going to see a production of Macbeth, so I was re-reading the play. I read the stage direction, and it just leaped out at me. It also appears in Hamlet. And then when Julius Caesar appears to Brutus.
