GravatarOh, I forgot to change my nym yesterday.

Fuck yeah! Because you choose speak for everyone that's ever come to this blog, per some comments.

GravatarI shoveled the driveway this afternoon, but you can't tell by looking at it now.

Me too, but the neighbors were looking at me really weirdly when I dragged that shovel against the bare concrete...

GravatarErinPDX!

hey dearie

GravatarNTodd, you at your in town manse or the rural dacha? Right at 0° here; -3° in the parking lot at On The Rise bakery/jazz club in Richmond.

GravatarI shoveled the driveway this afternoon, but you can't tell by looking at it now.

I've shoveled the path and the sidewalk four times now. Still snowing.

GravatarHit and run.

I was trained as a theoretical physicist, but I grew up in New Orleans, and I am quite a bit more superstitious than I should be. Voodoo was very real in my childhood. I could tell you a couple of stories you wouldn't believe.

I think Andy should get the sheets. I think they'll bring him and Zapette good luck. Anyway, I hope so.

Goodnight, all.

Gravatar"I've shoveled the path and the sidewalk four times now. Still snowing."

snow sucks

GravatarI shoveled the driveway this afternoon, but you can't tell by looking at it now.

TOW, I did the same, and it's drifting in as well as filling with new snow. So What, I am Not going anywhere tomorrow.

GravatarY'all are making me have PTSD symptoms. That's Post Traumatic Snow Drifting...

GravatarI shoveled the driveway this afternoon, but you can't tell by looking at it now.

It took me several attempts to get the car in the garage. I shoveled, and it's all for nothing. We're a foot above normal on snow this year...and it's only December. Ugh.

GravatarNTodd, you at your in town manse or the rural dacha? Right at 0° here; -3° in the parking lot at On The Rise bakery/jazz club in Richmond.

GravatarGee, what a surprise.

The required transfer in four weeks of all of the Bush White House's electronic mail messages and documents to the National Archives has been imperiled by a combination of technical glitches, lawsuits and lagging computer forensic work, according to government officials, historians and lawyers.

But archivists are uncertain if the transfer will include all the
electronic messages sent and received by the officials, because the administration began trying only in recent months to recover from White House backup tapes hundreds of thousands of e-mails that were reported missing from readily accessible files in 2005.

GravatarAh. Much better.

C'mon...you know me better than that!

GravatarAbout once a year (so far, anyway) the Superstitions and Four Peaks get snow on them. That's about 10 miles from me at the closest, and about 3,000' higher. And that's just about as close as I want it to get. If I want snow, I'll drive up to the mountains, play around, and drive home to my nice relatively warm home.

My wife makes noises about missing the seasons, but then she never had to scrape an inch of ice off the windshield, either...

The economic crisis was generated for the express need to break everyone's finances, thus preventing them from affording and reading all the tell all books that will be coming out after Bushco is no longer in power.

GravatarTlaz, just swinging through?

GravatarSnowing here since about 3:20, only about 1.5 new inches so far, and no real wind here so far, and I still have power!
Tlazolteotl

...I would offer either you or Erin the use of my snowblower, but both the Medford and Pendleton Weather Service forecast offices say that I will be needing it tomorrow...

GravatarSo far, the snow has been dry and easy to shovel. The ice tomorrow is what's really gonna suck. 21 degrees here.

Gravataratablarasa-

It freaks me out a little reading the comments the Northerners make about their dangerous weather. We're so much safer here, as long as the water doesn't run out and Sheriff Joe keeps his pants on.

GravatarDo you folks in the PNW normally lose power in two inches of snow?

GravatarTlaz, just swinging through?

Yeah, they have two feet of snow at home in Utah, so they're staying south of it. They are in Safford.

Gravatar AndyMN, no it's the ice storms and high winds that take down the power lines.

GravatarWe're so much safer here, as long as the water doesn't run out and Sheriff Joe keeps his pants on.

Uh, eww. That was not an image that I needed...

I was at the light parade a couple weeks ago and heard people booing as he went by. That's not something I'd heard before. Maybe the sheriff is running out of happiness...

GravatarDo you folks in the PNW normally lose power in two inches of snow?

They are predicting winds later up to 50 mph, with the snow possibly turning to sleet. Sounds like a recipe for power outages to me.

GravatarThe Dirty Birds are smokin' the Cowpokes.

Gravatar30 days left my friends, thirty days.

29 days and some hours too freakin' long...

GravatarA couple years ago we got snowed in at Kohl's Ranch outside Payson. 31" of snow. It buried my Corolla. The highway down to Phoenix was closed for awhile and I missed a day of work because I couldn't get back to town.

GravatarJack, I'm sure you will be needing it. As long as we have power, we will be OK, I have groceries for a week.

GravatarYeah, they have two feet of snow at home in Utah, so they're staying south of it. They are in Safford.

Sounds like a good plan, other than not being home for Christmas, maybe...

GravatarThe ice storms are the worst. Snow, cold, wind you can deal with pretty well so long as you have the electricity.

I can't quite imagine being happy somewhere you weren't supposed to get snow in the winter...

GravatarYes, andy when the ice rain comes da powah gonna go.

Gravatarno it's the ice storms and high winds that take down the power lines.

Ah...I forget that temps tend to hover around freezing out there (haven't been to the PNW since the "days of rage" with the WTO in '99).

Gravatar29 days and some hours too freakin' long...
atablarasa

Indeed.

Weirdest Bush moment? The OB/GYN thing.

Gravatar nick carraway: I can't quite imagine being happy somewhere you weren't supposed to get snow in the winter...

We usually get just enough, for me.

Slim to none.
.

GravatarBut it's hard to pick a favorite.

GravatarThe economic crisis was generated for the express need to break everyone's finances.

This is why Robert Hemphill stated the following in the forward of Irving Fisher’s book, “100% Money,” when he was the Credit Manager of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, Georgia:

“This is a staggering thought. We are completely dependent on the Commercial Banks. Someone has to borrow every dollar we have in circulation, cash or credit. If the Banks create ample synthetic money we are prosperous; if not, we starve. We are absolutely without a permanent money system. When one gets a complete grasp of the picture, the tragic absurdity of our hopeless position is almost incredible, but there it is. It is the most important subject intelligent persons can investigate and reflect upon. It is so important that our present civilization may collapse unless it becomes widely understood and the defects remedied very soon.”

GravatarWell, one of the many fine things about living (or working, or hanging out) in Chicago is that the city clears those streets, by God, and Mayor Daley will be out there with his own monogrammed snow shovel if need be, because, by God, the snow *must be cleared.* A certain 11th-ward Dem was unceremoniously thrown out of office -- with prejudice! -- in a mayoral primary not that long ago because the snow *was not cleared.*

People who have to get to work in the snow have good memories for that kind of thing.

GravatarSo far, the snow has been dry and easy to shovel.

You're lucky. It's packed slush here. And it's about to start snowing again.

GravatarWe were living in northern NY in 1998 and went thru this.

We lost power for 2 days and a lot of my coworkers went 2 weeks.

The hospital I worked at lost power, too. Even out back-up generator failed, so the hospital was dark for a night. Next day a local company shipped in a big-ass generator to get us going again.

GravatarSounds like a good plan, other than not being home for Christmas, maybe...

Is okay, they have teh kittehs with them.

GravatarEveryone remembers Ned's Atomic Dustbin, right?

GravatarThe last time we were snowed in, we made cocktails with the snow...
-

GravatarA couple years ago we got snowed in at Kohl's Ranch outside Payson. 31" of snow. It buried my Corolla. The highway down to Phoenix was closed for awhile and I missed a day of work because I couldn't get back to town.

That was probably one of the times that I was enjoying the snow on the Superstitions...

Nick, absolutely right about the ice. I left Wichita for here just after one of the worst ice storms on record there. The tree branches were lined up on the streets so high and deep that it looked like everyone had suddenly decided to build woven fences at once. And it warmed up just enough in the day following to smooth out the ice so that the snow that came in wouldn't really grip it at all.

But we do have seasons here. There's summer oven, followed by summer monsoon, followed by beautiful fall, followed by cool Christmas, followed by beautiful spring...

GravatarWe don't get snow cleared really here. Too hilly, a lot of it. And o beat all, our major hospitals are all on one of said hills, dubbed "Pill Hill" by locals.

GravatarBut tonight after supper I went outside (before the cold front comes through) and cleared the little inch of powder that fell today. It was still, and calm, and quiet, and the streetlights sparkled on the snow. It was so pretty.

Tomorrow it won't be so nice.

GravatarYou're lucky. It's packed slush here. And it's about to start snowing again.

You're shoveling...?

GravatarSomething like 15" on the ground here, although it is currently being rearranged into drifts and thin spots as I type. We were lucky to get a bit of a thaw which took most of the first 6-7". Shaping up to be the second straight long hard winter in a row. At least we're going into this one with a decent stack of firewood.

GravatarWichita never had good snow removal either. It usually only snowed a few times a year. The rest of the time it was just cold with a big-ass wind chill. So they never budgeted for it. Then we'd get a bid storm and the whole place would be paralyzed for a few days.

Sort of like what happens when it rains in Phoenix. Nobody knows how to drive highway speeds so the freeways all go to gridlock immediately.

GravatarWhen I was 15, we had a (locally) famous blizzard on Halloween. Got 32 inches in one day.

Almost as bad as the Armistice Day Blizzard.

GravatarNick-

When we lived in the Adirondacks we heated with wood. I'd buy 10 or 15 cords each spring, stack it in an open shed, and let it dry over the summer.

Gravatarbbl, or bed!
.

GravatarIs okay, they have teh kittehs with them.

And that's really all that matters!

:D

GravatarYou're shoveling...?

I don't know that any of it is "shovel-able". It fell all day yesterday and then turned into ice pellets and got all tamped down. There was about an inch of packed slush everywhere. Then it froze ...

GravatarIf you ever want to have fun being snowed in, try it with rambunctious toddlers! It's fun!

GravatarThx for reminding me to rain-x the car windows

GravatarI remember not having power for one full week in 1978 -- ice storm on Long Island in either January or February. Can't remember which. It was freezing, too.

GravatarThers is the hardest working man in fatherhood.

GravatarIf you ever want to have fun being snowed in, try it with rambunctious toddlers! It's fun!

WHy not just chuck them out in the snow?

Gravatar
I don't know that any of it is "shovel-able".

I know well the NYC phenomenon.

The coldest I've ever been in my life was walking near the Twin Towers in February -- the wind would be like a big giant freezing razor blade. The way that plaza was designed, it just funneled cold air in from the water. Misery.

GravatarYeah, the WTC plaza sucked. The whole "superblock" sucked. It was freezing in the winter and it was horrible -- horrible -- in the summer. A gigantic football field of concrete with nothing breaking it up except asshat i-bankers.

Gravatarshirmplate: About a quarter of the farm is in woodlot, and another quarter or so in pasture & woods. No shortage of material, but the time is always the problem. Last fall the harvest got so dragged out I had practically nothing on hand.

Chore one day, plow snow the next and cut wood the third. & then all over again. Hashing around in- I dunno, two feet of snow looking for a halfway decent dead oak to cut up. from saw to furnace all winter long. Never again, I said, and got off my ass early for a change.

Gravatarlater

GravatarWHy not just chuck them out in the snow?

It would only make them stronger and whinier.

And you, a lawyer. Sheesh.

GravatarJust to rub it in....

Went to the Water Ranch in Gilbert this morning and spent an hour or so wandering the ponds. A pair of peach-faced lovebirds were nestled in with about two dozen red-winged blackbirds (yup, four and twenty of them). The mallards and the grebes were in one pond and the rest of the water birds were in others as if to stay away from the crazy ones. Hummingbirds were buzzing me because I'd put on my Santa hat. The mockingbirds were getting it on, as were the grackles, so there was quite a concert.

Oddly, the great egrets and great blue herons were mostly abscent...

GravatarAnd you, a lawyer. Sheesh.

The courts give parents a lot of leeway on how to raise their kids.

GravatarA pair of peach-faced lovebirds were nestled in with about two dozen red-winged blackbirds

NO FLIRTING.

GravatarThe Armistice Day blizzard was nasty... really nice in the morning and the kids went to school without the heavy coats etc. Then the blizzard blew in out of nowhere-- & I don't think there were too many buses...

GravatarA pair of peach-faced lovebirds were nestled in with about two dozen red-winged blackbirds

NO FLIRTING.

Lots of flirting there, and considerably more than that in some places. They come down to breed, and they get right with it!

GravatarHave updated my blog with a pic my parents sent me of their kitties. Traveling obviously stresses them out!

Gravataratablarasa-

There's a couple palm trees nearby that have become lovebird condos. There's some black-faced ones there too, but the vast majority are the cute peachy ones.

GravatarI was thinking about the tort claims of the neighbors.

GravatarHi, Sallyh.

GravatarTlaz, yes, they look very stressed. *snort* So where do your parents sleep? Do the cats share?

GravatarI think I remember that 1978 storm. It was so warm one day that we had all our windows open, and the next day we were stormed in.

GravatarTlaz - cuties! And the parrots, too!

Shrimplate, what part of the Valley do you call home?

GravatarHave updated my blog with a pic my parents sent me of their kitties.

So..they're claiming that darkish, inert lump near the headboard is a cat?

GravatarI was thinking about the tort claims of the neighbors.

I thought of "The Ransom of Red Chief".

THERS: "I'll tell you what. YOU pay ME and I'll take them back inside."

Gravatar
If you ever want to have fun being snowed in, try it with rambunctious toddlers! It's fun!

No such thing as "snowed in" here, but when it rained for 40 days and 40 nights, the boys entertained themselves by running down the hall and launching themselves across the room onto the sofa. Over and over and over and over and over...

GravatarI've also updated my blog, ala Zap. I just complain about weather.

GravatarBlogwhoring the homepage. Highlights from Jan/Feb Foreign Affairs "Beyond Iraq." Two excerpts from the article:

But the situation remains fragile, and the need to pursue a host of second-order tasks should preclude more than modest reductions in U.S. combat and support forces in Iraq through 2009. By mid-2010, however, the Obama administration should be able to reduce U.S. forces significantly, perhaps to half their pre-surge levels. This would be consistent with the accord governing the U.S. troop presence that is currently being negotiated by U.S. and Iraqi officials. In the meantime, the highest political priorities will be ensuring communal reconciliation and an equitable sharing of oil revenues. Diplomatically, as reconciliation gains traction, Iraq's Sunni Arab neighbors will have to be persuaded to work with Baghdad's Shiite-led government.

[snip]

Preventive military action against Iran by either the United States or Israel is an unattractive option, given its risks and costs. But it needs to be examined carefully as a last-ditch alternative to the dangers of living with an Iranian bomb. To increase Israel's tolerance for extended diplomatic engagement, the U.S. government should bolster Israel's deterrent capabilities by providing an enhanced anti-ballistic-missile defense capability and a nuclear guarantee.

GravatarLovebirds come originally from Africa; Nairobi area I think. They travel there in large flocks that can pick over crops rather badly.

Imported here as pets, but a few escapees have settled in quite well in Phoenix.

GravatarAli, it did keep them amused, I assume

GravatarNowdays not only do the kids not have to walk to school they don't even have to ride the bus... if I happen to be in town when school gets out it's a veritable parade of newish cars being driven by munchkins talking on cell phones.

The school buses are nearly empty in the evenings...

GravatarI think I remember that 1978 storm.

My family slept in our den -- where there was a big fireplace -- for a week. My mother was cooking in that fireplace. It was fun for about two days. Then, not so much. There was a blizzard at the end of the week, so we got ANOTHER week off from school.

GravatarDolls with movable limbs and removable clothing date back to 200 BCE.

Gravataratablarasa-

Central Phoenix here. Sounds like you're in the East Valley.

Gravatarres, I remember the 1978 storm. We had no heat or light for three days.

The trees in our yard were totally iced over. Made for some interesting photos, but otherwise, not much good to say about it.

GravatarAli, it did keep them amused, I assume
Sallyh, Sad Grandmere

Apparently!

Surprising our furniture holds together at all, really.

GravatarRepair and restoration of antique and other dolls is carried out at doll hospitals, many of which have been operating for decades. Henri Launay, who has been repairing dolls at his shop in northeast Paris for 43 years, says he has restored over 30,000 dolls in the course of his career. Most of the clients are not children, but adults in their 50s and 60s.

GravatarHere' something about that 1978 ice storm.

Funny. I remembered that it started on Friday the 13th and the day that Hubert Humphrey died.

GravatarI was thinking about the tort claims of the neighbors.

GravatarThers, in our family's case, that was the status quo.

Yup, but they're putting some pressure on the local birds that nest in the saguaros.

And I'm basically at the Loop 202 and Broadway, so between AJ and Mesa (not that you can tell the difference!).

You must be close to GWPDA, then.

I thought they already have.

GravatarYes, that black blob is 'Trouble.' The yellow tabby and white Scottish fold is Angus.

Gravatarres ipsa-

I was in Potsdam NY for that 1978 storm. It's cold and snowy there anyways.

Gravatarshrimplate, I still have some pictures I took of that storm. The trees were beautiful ... but a lot of them wound up losing limbs and some of the smaller ones bent right over to the ground.

GravatarHere' something about that 1978 ice storm.

GravatarSurprising our furniture holds together at all, really.

Don't assume adult children are any better. First time I went to visit Mr. Snugglebunny's family at home for Christmas, his parents had just bought a new couch.

Let me preface this all by saying the smallest sibling is the daughter, at 6'1". The boys run 6'2" to 6'5". They are not small people.

By the end of the night, the new couch was broken, thanks to Mr. Snugglebunny and his older brother, who decided to - and I am not making this up - WRESTLE EACH OTHER on it. I believe control of the remote was up for grabs.

They were 31 and 32, resepectively, at the time.

GravatarThe young one has a sleepover guest here tonite. Very civilized they are. Tossing them out will probably not be a necessary consideration.

GravatarWow...it's already -8. And the Strib's printing Lutefisk recipes. I think that's a health code violation.

Snugglebunny

Oh, I did NOT want to hear that!

GravatarSnuggleunny, there's something about returning to your parents home. People revert to childhood behaviors. I know my sister and I certainly did. We lived over 1,000 miles apart, but within 10 minutes of being back home, we were arguing as if we'd never left.

Furniture wasn't usually damaged, however.

GravatarOff to bed. Be good and love each other. But not like a gynecologist would practice his "love" with his patients if he could. That's just wrong.

Gravatar-8. Los Yikes!

It's hard for me to believe that I used to do a lot of outdoor activity in that kind of weather.

Ditto. I'd go out for a nice four-mile run in that kind of weather. Yak trax on my feet if it was icy... Come back with my face mask frozen to my beard and my nose hairs... Well, anyway, I don't miss that, though I do miss the ability to go for that kind of a run...

GravatarThe house is all quiet now.

I'm going to go practice my scales and think about sleep.

I will be wishing good things to those of you in the frozen northern regions. I've been there and done that, and it can be teh suxor. Be well, all.

Same in upstate NY. Bitter cold started in October. Not like your bitter cold, but out of season for us. The cold is a good 1-2 months early.

I am really hoping this just means an extended cold season, not that the temperatures will plummet even more come Jan/Feb.

GravatarSleep well, Shrimplate. Thanks for the good thoughts.

OMG -- I forgot about her! What a nasty piece of work.

Oh, well, so much for perp walks and dramatic readings of the indictment for the media....

Paulose is probably the reason the indictment is taking so long -- they must have enough evidence on Coleman's illegal ties to Nasser Kazeminy to indict him up to his eyeballs.

Kazeminy is Coleman's very own Tony Rezko -- or maybe Jack Abramoff would be a better comparison -- anyway, they're all crooks.

GravatarDeviancy amplification spiral (also simply called deviance amplification) is a media hype phenomenon defined by media critics as an increasing cycle of reporting on a category of antisocial behavior or other "undesirable" events. In 1972, Stanley Cohen wrote a book, Folk Devils and Moral Panics, whose thesis is that moral panics usually include what he called a deviancy amplification spiral.

GravatarOfficials say ten passengers were taken to Denver Health and 15 passengers were taken to the Medical Center of Aurora, with minor injuries. University Hospital in Aurora took in eight passengers, all in fair condition. Four passengers were taken to Swedish Hospital, all in fair condition.

Captain Brian Gallager of the Denver Police Department says the most serious injuries were a head injury and one patient who was having shortness of breath.

Crew members on the plane had to activate the evacuation chutes, according to DIA officials, in order to get everyone off the aircraft safely.

Denver Fire Chief Patrick Hynes says firefighters were met with heavy flames when they first got on scene and the entire right side of the aircraft was engulfed. He says fire spread as passengers were evacuating.

Once all of the passengers had safely evacuated, Hynes says the fire had spread inside the plane and firefighters had to go onboard. He says the fire was so hot, it had melted the luggage compartments, which began to drop down onto the seats below.

"It was like a movie scene," said Hynes.

One of the passengers, Maria Trejos, tells 9NEWS the plane was trying to take off, got into the air for a few seconds and then slammed back down into the ground into a ravine off the runway. At that point, she says there was some sort of explosion on the right side of the plane and she saw a big ball of flames.

Maria Trejos says the plane then skidded to a halt after it went off the runway. Passengers were then evacuated to emergency exits and also the slides.

I find that the occasional G&T is a nice treat, but I should have qualified my comment to include that it might not work well for everyone -- it all depends on how you're affected by gin... or vodka, for that matter.

You might need to experiment, safely, of course, and see if it makes you feel cooler and more relaxed.

If you do experiment, try to find Stirrings brand of tonic water -- it's the best! No high-fructose corn syrup like Schweppes and Canada Dry, which are loaded with the stuff. I think a lot of people get higher off the HFCS than they do from the gin!

Cheers! -- and if it works out well, have one for me.

GravatarA true measure of "Heck of a job Bushie"

Speaking in Moscow on Tuesday, chief of the General Staff of the Russian armed forces, General Nikolai Makarov, just about lifted the veil on the geopolitics of the Afghan war to let the world know that the Bush administration was having one last fling at the great game in Central Asia. Makarov couldn't have spoken without Kremlin clearance. Moscow seems to be flagging its frustration to Obama's camp. Makarov revealed Moscow had information to the effect that the US was pushing for new military bases in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

Coincidence or not, a spate of reports has begun appearing that Russia is about to transfer the S-300 missile defense system to Iran. S-300 is one of the most advanced surface-to-air missile systems capable of intercepting 100 ballistic missiles or aircraft at once, at low and high altitudes within a range of over 150 kilometers. As long-time Pentagon advisor Dan Goure put it, "If Tehran obtained the S-300, it would be a game-changer in military thinking for tackling Iran. This is a system that scares every Western air force."

It is hard to tell exactly what is going on, but Russia and Iran seem to be bracing for a countermove in the event of the Obama administration pressing ahead with the present US policy to isolate them or cut them out from their "near abroad".

Well, there is typically 2 of us here (unless daughter drops in to live for a few months) - and a side (1/2) beef will go over a year.

Pork sides generally go about the same. Beef is longer, usually because it's twice/3x the size of a pork side.

The elite attendees and those who serve them are the only outsiders.

Depends on where he's at. I don't think he flies north of here and if he's on his regular sched he's enjoying mucho daylight down in the midwest.

GravatarSpeaking of which, I will mosey, soon, so I can get up to watch the epic struggle.

I think the Squealers have only won one out of seven games played at LP Field...

I saw 'em get beat in the 2003 playoffs, here.

GravatarNewgrange is 5000 years old, predating the better-known Stonehenge in the neighbouring island of Great Britain by more than a thousand years. This makes it the oldest megalithic monument in the world with a known astronomical function.

GravatarI think he's home until 2009.

That's possible, I know he takes a vacation break at some point. We have not talked lately except here when he pointed out that State Sen. John Cowdery (Squarbanks politico) had plead guilty. See: http://www.usatoday.com/news/nat...be_N.htm? csp=34

GravatarSOLSTICE WEBCAST: Dec. 21st is the northern winter solstice. In less than one hour you can watch a live webcast of the solstice sunrise from Newgrange, a prehistoric tomb in County Meath, Ireland. A beam of sunlight will travel down an 18 meter tunnel to illuminate the tomb's inner chamber as shown in this photo by Cyril Byrne (courtesy of The Irish Times):

GravatarWorks almost everytime!

Jesus, with this stuff it does.

GravatarSon of a bitch.

I was contemplating going fishing on Friday (day after X-mas) - now the weather people say freezing rain/snow.

Argh!

GravatarWell, it's either coffee or bed.
.

GravatarCOFFEE! Make yerself a pot of expresso, JP.

GravatarGuess I'd better stretch the 100' electric cord out today, since it's going to be near zero the next couple days.

Ye Old' diesel likes it much better when the coolant is warmed inside the block to start it's day with.

Gravatar Barndog: COFFEE! Make yerself a pot of expresso, JP.

Might just do. But then, I have to miss kickoff to get beer (which I would have to do, anyway -- no beer until noon on Sunday!).

Then, I can go to bed at 3:15, and get up a few hours later, and go to bed again by midnight?

Go for it...it's the shortest day of the year - what more of an excuse do you need?

GravatarPretty lights!

GravatarThen, I can go to bed at 3:15, and get up a few hours later, and go to bed again by midnight?

Something like that... I went to bed at 7 last night. My legs were twitching like I did a pound of cocaine. So, I downed an extra Soma.

Which worked fine until 3:30 a.m.

GravatarShortest day, longest night. Have an old acquaintance who got married on the solstice - so they could have the longest night in the year for their anniversary.

Too bad he was a republican.

Gravatar
Too bad he was a republican.

So Republicans know how to make love?

GravatarRLS?

Not really. I exhibit some symptoms, but mostly from back spasms.

I spent entirely too long outside on the tractor Friday, plowing snow.

I'm just now paying for it, if ya catch my drift. RA plays games with ya sometimes like that.

GravatarSo Republicans know how to make love?

They did have kids, so apparently they did. At least twice.

Whew. After all looking at Porn is one thing, but watching Republicans - well that's a bit over the top.

Gravatar CityKid: So JP did you go with the espresso? My money says you did.

I had a half-cup of joe leftover from today, so I heated and drank that.

I may go put on some more.

In my experience - one good thing leads to another. After all, you can only celebrate the winter solstice once a year. I've also learned that rationalization is key to surviving in a technological economy.

GravatarHell, guess I'd better git that pork loin outta the freezer for Xmas Eve.

Gravatar CityKid: In my experience - one good thing leads to another. After all, you can only celebrate the winter solstice once a year. I've also learned that rationalization is key to surviving in a technological economy.

Maybe you could buy something from me, then?

Gravatar

Well, speaking for myself - I'd rather be into porn than, oh say, having voted for McCain or thinking that bombing Iraq or Afghanistan was a good thing. I could go on, but..... according to legend I'm supposed to be rolling around in the grass naked because it's solstice. Problem is, there's a foot of snow covering the grass - so I'll have to drink some more wine and contemplate the situation further.

Gravatar
Maybe you could buy something from me, then?

JP - I'm a photographer - so as I'm sure you are aware, I don't have any money. I would consider a trade though.

Gravataraccording to legend I'm supposed to be rolling around in the grass naked because it's solstice. Problem is, there's a foot of snow covering the grass - so I'll have to drink some more wine and contemplate the situation further.

This is why people living in snow environments need outdoor wood fired saunas.

Gravatarmorning, all,

and no way I'm rolling around in 19F out there. Having Costa Rica Sunset BocaJava and loving the indulgence, staying warm inside a throw.

GravatarYou probably have Photoshop skillz, no?

minimal - I shoot film.

Gravatarand no way I'm rolling around in 19F out there

Ruth, where is your sense of adventure?

That's a common practice in the U.P. of Michigan. The Finnish and the locals take saunas, then roll around in the snow between each session.

Cleanses the soul it does.

Gravatarwise move!

Stumbling back to my "childhood" I do have some fond memories of saunas, snow, cold, and GIRLZ. But that was, as my SO says - a long time ago.

GravatarThere is a multi-colored cat (Freckles) at my feet begging for attention.

GravatarCitykid, never did the second half of a sauna, that part where you go out and roll in the snow and stuff. Never suffered from the lack either.

Hey, Barndog, the colder it is the more cuddling my Cleocatra comes over for.

I see it's being blizzardy.

GravatarI see it's being blizzardy

Yes, it's supposed to turn blizzardly today, or something.

GravatarCitykid, never did the second half of a sauna, that part where you go out and roll in the snow and stuff. Never suffered from the lack either.

Ruth, they say that the rolling in the snow part (let alone the lashing with birch branches, or whatever) is good for the circulation. Worked for me back when, now, well I'll stick with you and the Costa Rican blend.

Gravatarg'nite folks - it's a workday for me today (everybody wants everything before the Holidays).

- Keep 'm honest!

GravatarI see upthread that there are more sudden and suspicious deaths being celebrated in liebury circles. Soon there'll be nothing left for the cornerstone!

GravatarRuth, that blizzardly thing.. well I think it's begun.

GravatarWe'll be content here without the blizzars, thanks. Though I also see from upthread that FeralL got his furnace fixed before the worst of it hit. Glad of that but yikes!

Is QL still held up in Donner Pass?

GravatarWinter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 am EST
Monday...

Snow showers are expected to continue across the area right on
into Sunday night. Snow accumulations of 2 to locally 6 inches of
snow is expected from late tonight through early Monday morning

West winds will increase this morning... and gusts to 40 mph will become
likely. These winds in combination with the falling snow will
produce a considerable amount of blowing and drifting snow.
Visibilities will likely drop to below a mile at times.

Bitter cold will accompany this storm with temperatures in the
teens and wind chill readings below zero.

GravatarIs QL still held up in Donner Pass?

I think so?

Gravatarql has vowed not to go to the NW in winter again, I see from yesterday's comments. Not getting out is another matter.

GravatarMan, I wish it was light out so I could see the effects of the wind and snow.

GravatarA blizzard of support for Obama's latest environmental pics ...

Can't wait for the 20th.

No one is better qualified than Lubchenco, either, to lead a national effort to restore ocean health. A member of the Pew Oceans Commission, Lubchenco understands the quadruple whammy of overfishing, pollution, coastal development and climate change -- and the steps we need to take to reverse the oceans' decline.

The 61-year-old professor is also ideally suited to help resurrect the dead zones that the Bush administration is leaving behind in a different sense, scattered across federal agencies. Across many areas of research, the administration has systematically suffocated science, when it was at odds with Bush policy.

GravatarAnd I see the TX stadium ending was a loss for the 'boys. awwwwwwww. Gloom prevails.

GravatarDFH, amazing isn't it, that the new admin brings in a return of science in all those arcane fields, like, say, the economy...

We have a long way to come back from. The right wing has proved it is wrong in every functional way.

How do we stop a repeat performance in the future, especially when the administration faces only a sternly worded reproach for ignoring subpoenas?

GravatarGimlet, I have great hopes for teh Hague. I expect the world may make a few demands. The damage has been immense, in so many ways.

Winter Solstice Fun Fact

Due to the shape and mechanics of the Earth's orbit for folks at mid latitudes (like the US) the latest sunrise is still about 2-1/2 weeks away and the earliest sunset already occurred 2 weeks ago.
Today is the shortest day of the year. True dat!

GravatarMike Connell -- Key Figure in OH Voter Fraud and WH Email Scandals, Dies in Plane Crash

Connell, Karl Rove's IT guru--who was compelled six weeks ago to testify in an Ohio vote-tampering case--was killed late Friday night when his plane crashed into the garage of an empty house. Ohio's Secretary of State, Jennifer Brunner had requested that Attorney General Mukasey put Connell and under Federal protection.

Per Cybrinth CEO Stephen Spoonamore, Connell was also considered "vital to uncovering the truth" about the missing White House emails considered a critical link to the Justice Department and White House's involvement in the firings of nine US attorneys.

According to Spoonamore, as reported by Rebecca Abrahams here at HuffPost, at an October 11, 2006 meeting between Spoonamore, Connell, and GovTech Solutions President Randy Cole--who ran and lost for State Representative in Ohio this election--

Connell asked him about ways to "permanently destroy hard drives." Spoonamore said "If this is what I think you're talking about, this meeting is over."
Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board are on site today. Investigations typically take weeks and even months or longer to complete, according to an FAA spokeswoman.
