GravatarThanks Echidne.  I'll try not to weep all over it, since it's nice and clean.

Gravatarwell I guess not!

GravatarThanks MOM!!

GravatarSallyh, I left a message for you below.

GravatarSally, I wish I could do something to help.

Gravatar*rolling in sheets*

GravatarI'll try not to weep all over it, since it's nice and clean.

Nice, clean sheets are overrated.

Gravatar4Legs, you guys and the kittehs do more than you will ever know.

GravatarDead threaded.

Anyway, have 7700+ students all starting to get on my case about why doesn't the library have 50+ copies of my textbook available to me for as long as I want?

Will you reverse the charges?

Less fiddy cent, sure.

Soooo tired of bloggers jumping on the bash Clinton bandwagon.
A loser...?

If you'd stop for a moment, you would be exposed to the reality that Clinton is dominating the debates, dominating the polls. On the ground here in California, she has in place a growing organization that I guarantee you will crush any opposition - Democratic primary, or general election against the Repugs.

It's time the blogosphere, and people like you, began to clean up your act. Stop acting so reactively. And perhaps realize that your unique hits aren't necessarily a measure of your credibility.

GravatarEvening batses.

I am uploading some pictures of my new puppy. I would show them to you, but Flickr is going kind of slow right now.

GravatarDavid, how is Lindy?  I've been thinking about her.

GravatarOh, and from the last thread, please tell me that "dsrptng ur nrl pthwyz." is "disrupting your neural pathways"? I had to stare at that one a good long time, which probably does not speak well about my neural pathways, and/or alcohol consumption.

GravatarOy.

O'Hanlon has a stupid op-ed up in the WAPO.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/ wp...id=opinionsbox1

critics such as Rep. Jack Murtha and Salon columnist Glenn Greenwald have suggested that our analyses are based on a few days of military "dog-and-pony shows." Our assessments are based on our observations as well as on years of study.

I hope Hecate turns him into a giant boil.

GravatarI hope Hecate turns him into a giant boil.

GravatarDavid, how is Lindy? I've been thinking about her.

Sallyh,

Thanks for asking. Ok, but her hips are looking truly bad. There is a large bony protrusion on one side, and she as lost so much weight recently, that I cannot tell what is normal hip geometry, and what is abnormal.

I have an appointment with the vet on Monday, the soonest they can get me in. We shall see, but I think I have accepted that it is time.

I just said I had a box of Tide and dirty sheets, nothing about putting them together.

GravatarI'm very happy so far with the results of two weeks of physical therapy on my arthritic right foot. Ultrasound is a gift of the gods. The damn thing is acting almost normally.

GravatarBo, that's good news.

Would it work on my brain?

GravatarThe great thing about being in the Army, was the laundry day was pretty quick .

Everything, socks and underwear included, were the same shades of green or brown. Everything gets tossed into the washer, than drier. No sorting required.

GravatarIt is rough, David. I'm in a similar situation with my Henrietta. I just don't know if she is going to get better or not and if the quality of her life is sufficient if she doesn't get better. She is fifteen years old.

GravatarWould it work on my brain -
Sallyh

Haven't heard of adhesions in neural tissue. 'Fraid the result would be like scrambled eggs done in the microwave.

GravatarEchidne, I'm so sorry about Henrietta.  I remember what you went through with Hank.

So hard.

GravatarEchidne,

Lindy is the same age. It's something I have been attempting to prepare for, for some time now.

A couple of weeks ago was the hardest, because that is when her age truly just caught up to her, and I could no longer pretend otherwise.

Gravatarbo, try msm from the health
food store or drugstore for your arthritis

GravatarI just hope whatever is happening in my kids' lives, that I won't be cut off from my granddaughter.  I love her so much.

GravatarA couple of weeks ago was the hardest, because that is when her age truly just caught up to her, and I could no longer pretend otherwise.

Yes. Henrietta has hearing trouble and wobbly legs now and sometimes I'm not sure how much she sees. And she's getting thin.

But she sniffs outside and wags her tail at me and eats with good appetite and doesn't seem to be in any great pain. But she has certainly started acting her age recently.

GravatarI have never sorted anything. I have, over time though, learned to be suspicious of any new garment whose tag indicates origins in Sri Lanka.

I once washed a red sock with some white underwear. The odd thing was that one cami was dyed pink but the laces on it were dyed red. They were both white initially.

GravatarCorrection, the lace was dyed green.

Echidne

Dammit, I was just working out a rationale as to how the laces could have turned red (different fiber of greater absorbtivity, if there is such a word which spellcheck indicates there is not) but to have it turn green requires a difference at a higher level of chemical knowledge than my pay grade covers.

GravatarHopeless ibuprofen addict. Next best thing to the pt was being told I could safely take double the dose on the label.

My doctor gave me a massive bottle of prescription-strength iboprofen for something that cleared up in two days. Four or five pills would have been sufficient, but he gave me several hundred. Thanks, Doc!

GravatarTime for me to head out but before departing am going to go out on a limb: Sallyh, forgive me if this is overly intrusive. But I think you might want to consider two possible courses of action. One is to, as you mentioned earlier, talking to your doctor about a tweak in medication. If your doc is also a therapist some conversation there might also do a world of good.

The other is to give yourself a talking-to about disengaging from involvement in the kids' lives. I read here a great deal more than I talk and I've seen you get dreadfully wrapped up in the goings-on of their lives, both Mlle and SIL. Both of them, hard as it is for all of you, need to get used to living on their own as a family taking care of themselves and each other. Otherwise resentment is going to build up until somebody explodes and well, then, nothing good can come of that course.

just a thought. Again forgive me if this is overly intrusive.

I couldn't understand it, either. And the pink cami stayed pink from thereafter and so did the lace stay green.

Gravatarthe pink cami stayed pink from thereafter and so did the lace stay green.

Well, given how you girlz are genetically predisposed to liking pink, that's a good thing...

It's the anticipation that is so hard.

GravatarXan, fact is, I have to tell my daughter that you can't just call me, crying, and say you have to see me without letting me know what the fuck is going on.  I think it's immature and manipulative.

It's the sensation of being constantly, relentlessly pounded with bullshit propaganda that really gets to me. But perhaps we are talking about the same thing.

GravatarIt's the political situation, the economy, the lopsidedness and unreality of it all that's getting to me.  I look at the news and all I feel nowadays is weary.

My kids aren't helping.

GravatarI had the Petite Filet - and Jessica, our server ( though there seemed to be an army of underlings - I counted 5 at our table at one point) was the best server in any restaurant I have ever been in

GravatarIt's the sensation of being constantly, relentlessly pounded with bullshit propaganda that really gets to me.

Yes, oh yes. It's unending, like cleaning stables or something, and they have the money to keep on doing it.

GravatarI think it's immature and manipulative.
Sallyh,

Well, um, yeah. Immature anyway, on account of she is. And under great stress from pressures both internal (need for external control of brain-chemistry issues) and the usual shit any kid that age is going through plus a kid of her own, school, and a marriage which was, to put it mildly, ill-advised.

But she's determined to carry on with it and that's the most delicate issue you have to back away from. Otherwise she's going to feel like she has to make a choice between her husband and her mommy, and that's where ...well, you know.

Been through it for two generations now in my own family and it's miserable. You go and do better.

GravatarWalter Neff...20 oz is "petite"....???

GravatarSallyh - I know, and the funny part is, when I got the first cat I never stopped to do the math and comprehend that he could still be around when I'm in my 50s (I was 33). And as often as I complain about what an inconvenience they can sometimes be, I wouldn't part with them for anything. I even ended a relationship rather than give them away. (Naturally there was no question of her giving away her Cocker spaniel.)

GravatarDamn that steak sounds good...six more weeks and I can think about eating again.

Nothing like having all your lower teeth pulled to make one appreciate the joys of food.

Yeppers, I believe so.

Don't know how he does it, but my lawyer friend in Portland sweats sang froide (sp?), I swear. Just learned that about 3 years before I met him, he damn near died from a broken neck in a freak accident on the Deschutes River. His supposedly wonderful wife went psychotic followed two years ago by the youngest stepchild. Hasn't phased his enthusiasm for life. Pisses me off no end some times, but if he could bottle what ever it is that he has, I'd be his biggest customer.

Nothin' else we can do, darlin'. Just hope for them, believe in them, and get out of their way. And not get snookered into playing some role in their self-destructive fantasies?

Sure, they have no reason to. That's exactly what drives me nuts.

Gravatar"Steak sounds so good right now!!!!!"

Hmmm, peers in freezer, listening to the crackling noise of 70° colliding with -40° inside.

I've got rib eyes, new york, flank, round, sirloin, even a few elk and deer steaks.

Wadda ya want? I can have the grill red hot and the steak thawed in about 15 minutes. It will take me another 10 to 20 minutes beyond that to get it done to the right amount.
Do you want a tater with sour cream with this?

GravatarToo depressing to contemplate.

Hence the need to work for a change. Optimism of hope and so on.

Exactly.

Gummo was telling me that I'm at heart an optimist (which is probably the first time this cynical bastard has ever heard that) and that he couldn't be. That means you've already lost.

How can we help but NOT be optimistic? Do we want to live under tyranny? In a nation that kills with impunity?

If you don't want that, then you have to be optimistic and try to fight back with all tools (well, in my world that means short of violence) at our disposal. If you don't march to fight evil with some sense of hope, then what's the fucking point, bitches?

That is the thing that frustrates me and threatens to sap my hope. Even simple acts of resistance seem to be too much for so many people. How do you expect to regain this republic if you don't put some skin in the game, for fuck's sake? And how do you do *that* without envisioning a positive outcome?

GravatarSomeone should tell Ted Nugent that being a fascist is not "rock & roll"

GravatarTed Nugent belongs in Iraq.

GravatarThose in power will lie, spin and distort to maintain power. IMHO three trends developed that facilitated the current crisis. First, the left became more interested in affluence than fighting the fight against authoritarianism. Second, the right developed a long-term strategy to take power. And third, the press got lazy and crawled into bed with the right wingers because they were gaining power. These conditions provided a context against which 9/11 produced a kind of national fear that drove people more toward nationalism and authoritarianism.

GravatarSarah, I have no idea what goes on in my daughter's brain anymore. All I know is that I'm tired of the crying--both hers and mine. She's killing me.

I think the people who are counseling withdrawal are on the right track. When I first met my future wife, she was having a lot of problems with her dad's drinking. He was making it seem as though she was responsible for his day-to-day decisions and frame of mind...that whole "cater to me or you'll drive me to do stuff I want to do anyway" routine at which alcoholics excel. This is true, but there is more to it, based on my observations. The liberal pundits think that a pundit should be "neutral". The conservative pundits think that a pundit should eat flesh of still living creatures.

GravatarGood night, dear friends.  Thank you for the love I most likely don't deserve, but you all freely give.

Peace.

The very, very best to you, and let me give you a hug - a good one. You have been so kind and compassionate to me that I can only hope to return a fraction of your kindness.

Sleep well, dear one. Sleep peacefully and deeply and thoroughly.

Wake refreshed. We need you.

It is. I've heard some on the left argue that we should engage in the same distortion tactics as the right uses, and indeed that does happen. But, I don't think that can work long term. It just corrupts the effort and insults our values.

You're not asking the right questions. Working, and/or fighting for a better world is one thing, "regaining the republic" is another. Many countries were the problem at some point in history, now it's the U.S.'s turn.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Oscar-nominated director John Singleton was driving a Lexus SUV when it struck and killed a jaywalker who stepped in front of the car, police said Friday.

Singleton, 39, immediately stopped his car and waited for police to arrive after the accident Thursday night in the city's Jefferson Park neighborhood, said Officer Jason Lee, a police spokesman.

Jemaine on Flight of the Conchords leaps to mind

Gravatarenvironmental activist Derrick Jensen had an excerpt from a book on the Orion magazine site. It's not there anymore but it's reprinted on Dave Pollards blog here:

http://blogs.salon.com/0002007/2...2006/05/ 26.html

here's a tidbit:

A wonderful thing happens when you give up on hope, which is that you realize you never needed it in the first place. You realize that giving up on hope didn't kill you. It didn't even make you less effective. In fact it made you more effective, because you ceased relying on someone or something else to solve your problems—you ceased hoping your problems would somehow get solved through the magical assistance of God, the Great Mother, the Sierra Club, valiant tree-sitters, brave salmon, or even the Earth itself—and you just began doing whatever it takes to solve those problems yourself.

Gravataryou ceased hoping your problems would somehow get solved through the magical assistance of God, the Great Mother, the Sierra Club, valiant tree-sitters, brave salmon, or even the Earth itself—and you just began doing whatever it takes to solve those problems yourself.
Mike

I understand your point. But, there does have to be some affective drive behind your actions or else you lack motivation; that is just the way the brain works. Hope is often that affect, but I suppose other affects could be effective as well.

GravatarMy rant against Jensen, for whatever it's worth:

I think Jensen is a bit over the top when he argues that hope is inherently an obstacle to action, rather than a too-common substitute for it. And I can't think of any logical or metaphysical reason why hoping for a given result should mean that one has "given up any agency concerning it." Whether you look at this claim semantically or practically, it's pretty goddamn silly.

My view is that Jensen won't actually "do whatever it takes" to make sure coho salmon aren't driven to extinction. For one thing, he can't know what course of action will be successful; he can only hope he chooses the right one.

Further, the fact that Jensen wrote this piece implies that he hopes it will inspire people to take action. But that hope doesn't mean he gave up any agency. On the contrary, I'd imagine he wrote his article as carefully and thoughtfully as he could, in the hope that it would have the greatest possible effect on people. (If he didn't, he should've.)

Communication - writing, in particular - is a good example of how hope and agency are not only not mutually exclusive, but are often shackled together, for better or worse. Few people hope more fervently - or more irrationally - than those who wish to do things with words.

Jensen goes on to say:

I have no patience for those who use our desperate situation as an excuse for inaction. I've learned that if you deprive most of these people of that particular excuse they just find another, then another, then another. The use of this excuse to justify inaction—the use of any excuse to justify inaction—reveals nothing more nor less than an incapacity to love.

[I]f you love, you act to defend your beloved. Of course results matter to you, but they don't determine whether or not you make the effort. You don't simply hope your beloved survives and thrives. You do what it takes. If my love doesn't cause me to protect those I love, it's not love.

Alright, then. You do what it takes. The question is, what does it take?

Gravatarjack the ripper was a jew.

GravatarAMA Touts Plans for Uninsured Americans

CHICAGO (AP) - The nation's largest doctors' group on Thursday launched a multimillion-dollar media campaign to promote its proposals for helping uninsured Americans get health insurance.

The American Medical Association calls its campaign "Voices for the Uninsured" and placed full-page color ads promoting it in Thursday's New York Times and USA Today.

The AMA's solution includes tax credits and increasing federal funds to expand government programs, including the State Children's Health Insurance Program and Medicaid.

The group's president-elect, Dr. Nancy Nielsen, said some people assume the uninsured all are homeless or unemployed.

But today, they're "your own families or your working neighbors," she said at a Washington, D.C., news conference.

Nielsen, the mother of five, said she was uninsured while in graduate school. She recalled lacking money to feed her young children after paying for emergency care when one of them got sick.

I have sympathy with a lot of it, but ultimately I don't think it has much substance.

He also says that revolution is impossible while people are buying bottled water, which bugs me because it ignores the reasons people by bottled water, which wrongheaded or not, are closer to activism than apathy. Like a lot of lefty theorists, he seems to have a hard time seeing past his superficial dislikes and resentments, and finding common ground with "the herd."

Strictly one man's opinion, natch. And as I say, I haven't read any of his books.

"US 'sole survivor' to leave Iraq

Nathan and Jason Hubbard signed up after the death of their brother
A US soldier is to return home from Iraq under a military proviso known as the "sole survivor" rule after losing both of his brothers in the war.
Jason Hubbard, 33, will be re-united with his family in Clovis, California after his brother Nathan, 21, died in a helicopter crash in Iraq on Wednesday.

His other sibling Jared Hubbard was killed by a roadside bomb in 2004.

The "sole survivor" policy, which has allowed Jason to leave Iraq, formed the premise of movie Saving Private Ryan.

Nathan and Jason Hubbard had joined the army in 2005, shortly after their brother, Jared, died aged 22."
