How much is too much to spend on the Inauguration?
Jonathan Turley tut-tuts at a high estimate of $160 mil, but I say Hank Paulsen already spent $350 bn, enough to have an inauguration more than 2000 times already, and for a followup, he's getting money for 2000 more.

Let's rename everything "Reagan" for "Dubya".
From Krappy (but it's being heard from multiple sources in the GOP echo machine)
Vindication is being expressed not in words but in deeds -- the tacit endorsement conveyed by the Obama continuity-we-can-believe-in transition.
It's not just the retention of such key figures as Defense Secretary Bob Gates or Treasury Secretary nominee Timothy Geithner, who, as president of the New York Fed, has been instrumental in guiding the Bush financial rescue over the past year. It's the continuity of policy.
It is the great care Obama is taking in not preemptively abandoning the anti-terror infrastructure that the Bush administration leaves behind. While still a candidate, Obama voted for the expanded presidential wiretapping (FISA) powers that Bush had fervently pursued.
he (Obama) declined George Stephanopoulos's invitation (on ABC's "This Week") to outlaw all interrogation not permitted by the Army Field Manual. Explained Obama: "Dick Cheney's advice was good, which is let's make sure we know everything that's being done," i.e., before throwing out methods simply because Obama campaigned against them.
The Democrats now own Iraq. They own the war on al-Qaeda. And they own the panoply of anti-terror measures with which the Bush administration kept us safe these past seven years.
Which is why Obama is consciously creating a gulf between what he now dismissively calls "campaign rhetoric" and the policy choices he must make as president.

JP - the hood LATCH, not the hinge.
Every GM car made has an inside the vehicle hood latch release, with a cable running to the latch.
The cable is SUPPOSED to be freeze proof.
But, it isn't. At least, that's the only issue left to resolve. If so, I'm going to run it right up GM's asshole(s). There is no other way to open the hood beside that cable/lever.
One must attempt to stick their hand/arm through the grill, or, from under the vehicle to open it. I forgot to mention - while reaching up as far as you can..
A feat for those who have far more flexibility, and arm length than I at 6'6". I'd like to see a mechanic do that myself. It would make for a great youtube video....

I have learned that a 65 lb. lab puts off some heat.
I added more blankets and a dog to my daughter.
The dog reminds me. I've told this story before, but, in the long distant past, when I was living in upper western Michigan, we had a helluva storm with lots of lake-effect snow that slightly predated the blizzard of `78.
The guy next door was living in an old concrete-block former schoolhouse. He was a Cook County cop supposedly on disability who was trying to get himself back in shape to get back on the force (mostly, he was just a drunk).
The ground floor of the house was five feet off the ground, and it had twelve-foot ceilings. At the very top of the north ceiling, there was a single row of clear glass blocks.
Well, there was no snow on the ground New Year's Eve, after the guy really tied one on and went to bed, after celebrating in his particular fashion.
Overnight, during the early morning of New Year's Day, the snow had come down so heavily that it had drifted all the way up to the north top edge of the schoolhouse.
The guy woke up about 9:30 in the morning, looked up and saw my dog looking in the block windows at him, and he thought he was having DTs.

The timing to pressure release of the $350 Billion from Congress is just too coincidental even though BofA seemingly paid a huge penalty wiping out a tremendous amount of equity with their fall in stock value.
Maybe the evil SOBs just wanted to buy back their stock cheap knowing it will rebound quickly?

At a downtown hotel where survivors waited to meet with airline representatives, one passenger ordered a martini. Before long, nine of the passengers were exchanging stories, and wine was poured, and someone decided he had seen enough of New York City for one day, thank you. The group returned to La Guardia, where they boarded US Airways Flight 2591 to Charlotte, which took off just before 10 p.m.
“They applauded us,” said Mr. Wentzell, the door salesman. “We had some wine and we thought about just how great it was to be alive.”

PHILADELPHIA - Barack Obama, who pilloried his soon-to-be predecessor’s policies during two years on the campaign trail, said Friday that George W. Bush is a good guy.
“If you look at my statements throughout the campaign, I always thought he was a good guy,” the Democratic president-elect said on CNN about the Republican president whom he replaces Tuesday.
“I mean, I think personally he is a good man who loves his family and loves his country. And I think he made the best decisions that he could at times under some very difficult circumstances.”
Best decisions he could? Obama lambasted Bush on the campaign trail for his decisions on a wide range of issues, including the Iraq war, financial regulation, climate change and the treatment of prisoners.
Obama made reference to those, too.
“Over the last several years, we have made a series of bad choices and we are now going to be inheriting the consequences of a lot of those bad choices,” the president-elect said.
the 'good guy' who when he sat down with larry king answered that he honestly didn't know if they ever got close to bin-forgotten
loves 'his' country; that of country-clubs and everyone he knows is an illionaire...yeah i would love it too if that were my base.

But she really did great on the way back -- I was extremely proud of her. And yes, I offered to turn around and cancel the trip. She's a trooper.
quakerboy; yoobegone
My experience has been that I do better on the return trip. I think it's because I don't fly very often and the old phobia has a chance to build up between trips, and then once I've done it one way I'm better.
I almost cancelled a trip from Houson to FL once because I was too scared to do it, but I went ahead because there was no way to reach my Mom and tell her to forget it (long before cell phones, and she was spending the day in Orlando shopping until my plane came in).
We flew into absolutely terrifying weather; they kept trying to go around it but eventually had to plow through. (2 1/2 hour trip took almost 4 hours.) The flight attendants were scared shitless. It was probably 10 years before I tried again.

I received a nytimescorp. subscription sign-up in my mailbox last week containing advertisements about all the future news that would be available to me if I subscribed to their corporation news. It would contain, I assume Obama coverage (a little pic of him on the advert form). It also contained a return envelope that required no postal payment on my part.
So……….. I started cogitating about the unsolicited paperwork I was forced to deal with, yes forced because you HAVE to do something with the paperwork. Trash it /open it /etc. If you did nothing, your mail box would fill up/ or you desk would clutter up.
Then I thought about the return envelope provided to me. I asked a postal clerk what that envelope is called. She said it was a “Business Reply” envelope. The “no postage needed” label in the top right corner means the nytimescorp WILL BE BILLED by the postal service If I return it to them.
So, I clipped up the contents and returned the “Business Reply” envelope to the Nytimescorp. I can only surmise they will be billed against their budget for an unsuccessful attempt to sell their product.
So……what if lots of people did this. What would the impact be to a struggling business? What if you added extra “paperwork” to the envelope ? Would that add extra postage fees to the billing of the nytimescorp. ?
You fucking people are sick. Nothing pleases you more than to see businesses close and people thrown out of work.

Jesus Christ, why the fuck are we allowing this? Oh ya, taxes are for the little people.
The culprits include some corporate giants who are receiving countless millions in bailout money, Leonnig notes.
Democratic Sens. Byron Dorgan and Carl Levin, who released the report, say that companies such as Citigroup and Morgan Stanley have set up "hundreds of tax haven subsidiaries" in such inconspicuous nations as Luxembourg, Mauritius and the Cayman Islands.
Others figuring prominently in the corporate tax-haven list are such varied firms as 3M, American Express, Caterpillar, Cisco, ConocoPhillips, Dell, Dow Chemical, Exxon Mobil, FedEx, GM, Kraft, Merck, Pepsi, Pfizer, Procter & Gamble, Wachovia, and Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, which tallied a whopping 782 foreign subsidiaries in 14 countries.
Among the federal contractors listed are Boeing, General Electric, Goodyear, Hewlett-Packard, Honeywell, IBM, ITT, Motorola, Oracle, and Xerox.
"This report shows that some of our country's largest companies and federal contractors, many of which are household names, continue to use offshore tax havens to avoid paying their fair share of taxes," says Sen. Dorgan (D-ND). "[S]ome of those companies have even received emergency economic funds from the government.
Somewhere upthread, someone linked to an article about gays in the military and the repeal of "Don't ask, don't tell."
I live in a red state near a military post. Interesting points were raised in that article.

This is why you should not want your children to go to Harvard -- They might turn into David Brooks:
It’s also a sign that Obama can talk to and understand Americans at all social levels. For example, that night with us, he had an elegant dinner filled with sophisticated ideas and complex policy conversation with a bunch of right-leaning commentators. Then the next day, he had a meeting with some liberal commentators where, I presume, he was just as fluid while using much simpler sentences, shorter words and serving Froot Loops and Hostess Twinkies. There are pundits at all levels of cognitive distinction, and Obama has to learn to address all of them.

I always think of Montey Python's Twit of the Year contest when I see/hear/read Bobo.
Have a great day! Be kind to someone for absolutely no reason today.
