http://abcnews.go.com/PollingUni...Uni...=6067150& page=1

On the vice presidential candidates, 52 percent of likely voters say McCain's pick of Palin has made them less confident in the kind of decisions he'd make as president; that's up 13 points since just after the selection, as doubts about Palin's qualifications (also voiced by Powell on Sunday) have grown. Just 38 percent say it makes them more confident in McCain's judgment, down 12 points.
Those numbers are more than reversed on Obama's pick of Joe Biden: 56 percent of likely voters say it makes them more confident in Obama's decision-making, 31 percent less so.

I was going to say that it's a sign of the unparalleled corruption of our contemporary press that they're allowing the Republicans to spin this Cheney story as even remotely ambiguous.

Then I remembered that the press had to be dragged, kicking and screaming, into investigating the second rate Watergage burglary three decades ago.

We don't have a liberal media in this country. We have an Establishment media. And in a war between you and the Establishment, the smart money always bets on the latter.

The Repubs, if nothing else, have shown a remarkable ability to swallow whatever their leaders care to shove down their throats.

My guess is, if Palin is the candidate, they will all suddenly love her.

You know, in the little guy vs. Establishment war, you'd think your pal Tobes would be right there next to you instead of volunteering himself to be cannon fodder for the Man.

Of course, you'd probably garrote him in the first 5 minutes, but still.

GravatarIf Palin will split the Republican Party, I'll donate money - Hecate

You have a soft spot in your heart for her because of her beauty despite having had 5 kids.

GravatarHecate,

I just got back from Blissfest. We got up there Friday afternoon, and Nim, Jen, the baby, and I rented the Nebo Cabin in Wilderness State Park.

It was beautiful, but very remote. Literally on the top of a hill (the call it Mt. Nebo). Wildflowers -- columbine, larkspur, and others I plan to identify.

Our cabin was about 30 minutes from Bliss, but we didn't want the baby out in the middle of a dusty campground this year.

Bliss was fun. We finally found Barndog yesterday, and hung out at his camp for a while. Nice crowd. Barndog, Virginia, chi dyke, allegedly, fokowi (although I never saw him), Ruth, Feral Liberal, Nim, Jen, and mena and WGG.

However, I've got some sun burn, and I drank way too much wine (I didn't have to drive yesterday, but still...thanks to Feral Liberal) and smoked way too much hippie lettuce.

It's always nice to be home and sleep in your own bed. After 2 days in the wild, you get that "not so fresh" feeling, so the first thing I did was jump into the shower.

I have to say it was great to see mena again. She's a beautiful woman, inside and out. I talk to chi dyke, Barndog, and Virginia regularly, and I saw V earlier in the week, but seeing mena was a nice surprise. Everyone looked great and they were all having a blast. It was fun.

GravatarIf Palin will split the Republican Party, I'll donate money

Pardon my French, but I think it's more that certain Republicans wanted to split her that led to their problem.

It may be ironic, but it's SOP. Being the victim of a crime or being descended from a victim doesn't automatically make you into a sensitive caring person - or smart. Gravatar I, myself, have been known to, um, hyper-appreciate feral liberal's fine, fine beverages.

I really "hyper-appreciated" them. *hic*

The head didn't hurt (no sulfites, I guess), but there seems to be some lost time there, and I know I spilled Barndog's gumbo and wine on myself. I hate that when that happens.

It was fun. I missed most of Kathy Mattea on the main stage, but it was definitely fun.

GravatarSnarly Dick is headed for an undisclosed location, shotgun in hand.

With a 28 gauge no less.

GravatarTabloid TV is the rule these days not the exception. As the conservative media (MSM) gushes over Sarah Palin they fail to look at how inept she was in governing Alaska's tiny state government.

So, stories about how she didn't follow her own line of succession never appear in the national media even though they cause major problems for the state she was charged to lead.

"The issue came up with Palin's surprise announcement last week that she will resign from office July 26 and hand power over to Parnell, the current lieutenant governor. Palin said Campbell, the state commissioner of military and veteran affairs, would then take over as the lieutenant governor.

The problem is that Palin in February selected someone else, Corrections Commissioner Joe Schmidt, as next in the line of succession behind Parnell to be lieutenant governor, and the Legislature confirmed him. The Legislature's top lawyer, Tam Cook, said this week that Palin can't put Campbell in the job instead unless he is confirmed by the Legislature."

Anything proving Palin's incompetence gets ignored so they won't tarnish the "celebrity" they want her to maintain.

GravatarI have trouble understanding you, rootless; but I'm a deluded goy gay boi who cried over Anna Frank's diary -- even as I found it too perfect.

Q:"How can you work for that pig?"
A: "For money - and success."

There are a lot of people who seem to lack empathy and can be like Dershowitz, really sensitive to injustices committed against people who they think are like them and unconcerned otherwise.

GravatarCornyn said the new assertion "looks to me suspiciously like an attempt to provide political cover" to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats.

GravatarAllowing one's experience of Self to expand beyond self and beyond tribe to encompass at least one's own species could compel one toward more inconvenient life choices than one may be willing to face.

And, imagine going beyond one's own species. One of the reasons that I read G/Son stories that anthropomorphize animals, and get him DVDs that do the same is so that he can develop empathy w animals. Last fall, when we met a doe on a path through the woods, he said to her something that he's heard me say over and over to birds, and squirrels, etc.: I would never hurt you.

Bleeding heart that I am, this last paragraph made me cry:
For an hour they cut at the lines and rope with curved knives, all the while trying to steer clear of a tail they knew could kill them with one swipe. When the whale was finally freed, the divers said, she swam around them for a time in what appeared to be joyous circles. She then came back and visited with each one of them, nudging them all gently, as if in thanks. The divers said it was the most beautiful experience they ever had. As for the diver who cut free the rope that was entangled in the whale’s mouth, her huge eye was following him the entire time, and he said that he will never be the same.

GravatarI have a few problem's with Frank Rich's piece, but this is a comment, not a post, so I'll keep it short.

This quote: "She (Palin) could well be their last presidential candidate standing. Such would-be competitors as Mark Sanford, John Ensign and Newt Gingrich are too carnally compromised for the un-Clinton party."

Oh, si, because all the "carnally compromised" candidates in the "Clinton party" have paid no price whatsoever for their acts. President john Edwards can attest to that.

I swear to furry fuck. Maybe, maybe, Rich is trying to make an ironic point with that "too carnal for the un-clinton party" crack, about which party really is the "carnally compromised" one. But given his track record during the `08 primaries, I have cause to doubt it.

Note to Frank Rich: Knock off the Clinton-baiting. It makes you sound like a low-rent Maureen Dowd.

It demonstrates the maxim Jenny Boylan taught us many years ago: to be at all convincing, fiction must provide lots of detail.

Sadly, contradictions in said details make it more difficult for the audience to suspend disbelief.

GravatarDWD, we DO do this for all children. public schools cost as much or more per child as private schools.

Ummm, no. That is not even close to reality, sorry.

School districts in this area receive about 7100 dollars per child. With this money they are expected to provide all educational services - including special education services (A problem we really do not talk about since many many many school districts are out of compliance in this area)

Sidwell Friends is around 30K + per child. With this money they have no obligation beyond teaching children who do not vary greatly from the normal range.

Some are even more expensive: Charlie Gibson's wife's former school was 42K two years ago.

With 25-35 K per child in increased funding . . .

DWD-YDWETAKIT? | Homepage | 07.12.09 - 4:58 pm | #

sure, there are plenty of SUPER EXPENSIVE schools. but there are a lot more parochial schools that provide excellent education for $4-5K per year. there are plenty of good private schools for $7-8K.

so i think you are focusing a bit on the high end schools, which of course do exist. at least in Mayland, i think we spend about $9K per child for public, and i bet the average private is right around that figure. there are certainly tons of private options under $10K.

have a nice evening mimi!

GravatarWatched Reservoir Dogs and True Romance this weekend.

Tarantino did provide really entertaining, tongue-in-cheek 90's riffs on older gunplay flicks, but he gets a little bit lazy across films.

The diner at night used in Reservoir Dogs looks a lot like the diner in the day used in Pulp Fiction.

And the phrase to mean soup to nuts "diddle dad joe to a damned if I know" that Mr.Orange's undercover buddy used in the diner is the same as Gary Oldman's character Drexl used in True Romance when confronted by Christian Slater's character Clarence.

GravatarThe republicans create their own reality.

Full on wingnut in 2012!

GravatarDWD-YDWETAKIT?, It was bizarre. He went to bed fine one night, and the next morning he couldn't even walk. He did wait a couple of days, thinking it was a pulled muscle or something, before we went in for treatment. The pain for him, I can't imagine. The stress for me, I'm still trying to recover.

Gravatarwho is john?

GravatarI knew a mobster with gout. He didn't like it.

Did his doctor advise him to "leave the cannoli"?

Gravataryou have too many animals

We're hoping Sam will develop a superhuman immune system and will be able to sleep through anything.

Oh, and we're thinking of getting miniature donkeys, pygmy goats, a couple pigs and some chickens.

GravatarDon't forget those miniature cows!

GravatarWaiting and waiting for Mlle to get ready to go out.

She had a really good job interview and I'd like to get her some professional looking clothing.  (As you can see, she's not trying to be a college prof.) If she doesn't get this job, she'll get one soon.

Not to mention that I'm tired of her lying around the house, looking and acting like a total wreck.  Every time she tries to tell the bloodsucking ex SO that it's over, he comes back and guilt trips her.

I feel like slamming a 2 x 4 over her head.

Oh, and we're thinking of getting miniature donkeys, pygmy goats, a couple pigs and some chickens.

We think that's an excellent idea.  Except for the goats.  They faint.

No, they don't.

Ummm. That was NOT my point. I don't care to argue about private v public v parochial education. That is a loser's argument.

What I said (and you may verify this at your convenience)was that I never wanted to deny the rich their private schools (and high funding) but why can't we do this for ALL children?

Yeah, if there is one thing Hecate is terrified about in this life, it's debating some asshat on the topic of homeschooling.

GravatarWhat I said (and you may verify this at your convenience)was that I never wanted to deny the rich their private schools (and high funding) but why can't we do this for ALL children?
DWD-YDWETAKIT?

Probably because the main advantage of private schools is not their budgets, but their selection process.

If you can weed out the kids you don't want in your classroom (and they can), it doesn't really matter how much (beyond a basic level) you spend per student.

Test scores are equally meaningless, for the same reason.

Gravatar When Obama completes his socialist revolution, black cats will ride trains!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They'll have to sit in the back though.

Gravatarwhat do you have against homeschooling

Well, let's see. It's used in many cases to isolate children from other people.

Because heaven forbid they find out that what ma and pa tells them isn't always correct.

Then there's the fact that the people doing the teaching aren't qualified to do so.

Then there's that batshit religious fundamentalist element.

GravatarWanting to schtoop someone doesn't make them qualified for the Presidency. Can we have a year with the Obama administration before we start talking 2012?

GravatarThey'll have to sit in the back though.

Gravatarit does seem that the people most likely to homeschool their kids are not the most qualified to do so, to put it mildly.

GravatarWell, let's see. It's used in many cases to isolate children from other people.

I'd say it's really effective in every case.

GravatarRmj, Love Stupid Theologist

Oh, you know I agree.

Still, it would nice to have both the lack of problems and the money for all children.

RE: homeschooling. I am a certified teacher with three decades of experience and I would not try it.

The assumption that school is only the text materials and the guided learning of the classroom is suspect. . . .

DWD-YDWETAKIT? | Homepage | 07.12.09 - 5:14 pm | #

i completely agree that's what you said. in my mind, parochial schools ARE private schools. i guess you draw some distinction (sounds like you are in the business, so perhaps there is one that i don't know about). but even for private schools, i bet the national average is no more than $13K. sidwell and such are the MOST expensive, not the norm.

i have no problem with public schools getting more money as long as I can get my damn money back for the schools I can't use. Vouchers! i will vote for any politician, republican, democrat, or islamofascist, that promises me a check for my share of public school funding that i can't use because the schools suck.

GravatarWanting to schtoop someone doesn't make them qualified for the Presidency. Can we have a year with the Obama administration before we start talking 2012?

I would prefer three before we start the next presidential election process. Too exhausting.

GravatarHomeschooling ought to be a part of every child's upbringing, alongside organized education, not in exclusion of it.

Remember the story about the Nazi twins, Prussian Blue?

Their mother home-schooled them with textbooks from the early 1950s.

She didn't want them learning about civil rights, the women's movement or any of that commie, elitist, n**ger loving stuff.

Gravataryeah, he was murdered, supposedly.

GravatarHomeschooling ought to be a part of every child's upbringing, alongside organized education, not in exclusion of it.
MP

Yep, but certain elements don't see it that way.

GravatarHomeschooling was once the rule, public school completely unheard of. Then public schools started for the wealthy. "Sunday school" actually started as school on Sunday for the children of laborers in Scotland, who couldn't afford "public" school. It was held on Sunday, as it was the only day they had off from work (no child labor laws, either), and run by a Presbyterian minister.

That later gave way to public schools for citizens (i.e., taxpayers).

I wouldn't say homeschooling is bad simply because it's not what we're all used to. I know of two children who were homeschooled, are very bright, well educated, and well adjusted. That doesn't mean there aren't abuses in homeschooling. But then, I know lots of poorly educated sociopaths in public schools.

Which is to say I wouldn't generalize either way, with the fund of information I have available. And now I have to go clean a room.....

Gravatari will vote for any politician, republican, democrat, or islamofascist, that promises me a check for my share of public school funding that i can't use because the schools suck.

Yeah. Sounds great to me. Let's just fuck the society so you can have your money.

While you are at it, you don't actually break the law so let's give you your money back for the police.

And your house is not burning (at the moment) so why should you pay for fire protection?

And having an effective means of getting from point A to Point B is only relevant if you are actually going somewhere - so endless toll roads, bridges, and mass transit systems that are not subsidized are the way to go as well. . .

Dismissed.

Gravataryeah, he was murdered, supposedly.

Only if I get my money back for all the $$$ wasted on Halliburton in Iraq, and on war and weaponry in general. I don't get to use it, and so far as I can see, it hasn't done me a damned bit of good in 53 years I've been alive.

I want my money back!!!!!!!!!! Vouchers for PEACE!!!!!!

GravatarWhat, do they graduate from their own house's High School? WTF?!

GED?

GravatarI've known a few home schoolers. It was all about the lack of religion in the public schools for them. One family was black and the school their kids would have attended was about 40% minority. She used a McDuffy reader. She herself never finished high school and her hubby was just barely literate. They had this weird competition going as to who was more religious. He claimed he was because he was moved to speak in tongues and she wasn't. Nice family, just batshit insane when it came to religion.

GravatarRemember the story about the Nazi twins, Prussian Blue?

The perfect ad against homeschooling. People should have the right to do as they see fit, but homeschooling in some cases shouldn't be done. This mother is the perfect example.

1. it is my job as a parent to isolate my children from bad elements. is it not?

2. same is true about school. the teachers are doctrinaire and stubborn. my children have free access to the internet and spend months in a foreign country. i hardly believe they are sheltered from different opinions.

3. children teach themselves. they are 3-4 grades ahead already as it is.

4. evolution and genetics are part of the curriculum. my family is not particularly religious.

Gravatarsebs,

What did I tell you a few days ago? Weren't you alerted to the fact that the big kids were talking and you needed to go away?

GravatarTo be fair, I wouldn't want those two girls out in public, either.

Gravatari do generalize about homeschoolers. think of them as mostly being religious, possibly racist, fundies, with little knowledge of science, history, or math. maybe that's unfair.

GravatarI see sebs is lecturing the left again.

In recent days we have been treated to such as:

- the swim club people were actually the victims when they took the $2000 from the day care group but renenged (no pun intended) when the kids actually showed up and turned out to be not exactly white

- Sarah Palin is one of us and we could support her

and now home schooling.

JOHN needs to do his job here and put up a new post.

GravatarBy definition homeschooling would engender a very libertarian "get away from me" vibe with the children.

I don't see how that could be overcome.

GravatarPoo fight!!!!!!

GravatarWe got a fundie church here where I live.

They had a school but since they've only had three "graduates" in like 10 years, they closed it.

They DO teach a class for girls -- to turn them into Stepfords. Ugh!

Gravatardo they have like cum laude awards in homeschools? perfect attendance awards?
pretzel | 07.12.09 - 5:27 pm | #

there is not much attendance to speak of. the required curriculum takes about 2 hours a day to work through. so my kids burn through that and spend the rest of the time on other stuff. but all in all they do real school work maybe 2-3 days a week. saturdays are our big homeshooling day and we do all our tests then.

GravatarI would guess that at least 1/2 of the homeschoolers out here are DFH's taken to an extreme, rather than religious. For example, our neighbors: woman lives with two "husbands" and homeschools quite a managerie. They are hard core Libertarians, ex-military, and armed with shit I don't want to know about. They come across as deadheads....love to come to our parties with live music and swirl like dervishes. I actually like them a lot but they are certainly *different.

GravatarSarah Palin is one of us and we could support her

Bullshit.

I detest her and everything she stands for.

Gravatarowls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GravatarI always like it when the christo-facist schools don't want their kids mingling with the other kids, but scream bloody murder to get their kids to go along with the cheerleaders or football squad on the school they don't support.

Gravatarim a bit interested in home schooling, i have some fundy cousins that (i think) homeschooled their kids, or partially homeschooled them. not really sure how that worked out, the parents were dedicated and pretty smart despite their ideology. i think the kids got into accredited colleges.

sounds like a recipe for disaster. most of the homeschoolers we associate with are secular, super highly educated, and just sick of paying $10K per year per child for sucky private schools. if the private schools were a little better for what you have to pay, i bet none of us would be doing this.

but now that we've started, we love it. i would not go back.

pretzel, i'd be happy to answer any questions. its REALLY GREAT. my kids tested about 3 grades ahead when they started, and a year later they test 3 grades ahead still, so we are not causing any harm at least.

and its lots of fun and very relaxing. they spent a month at the beach in the fall. we took a 3 week xmas break. they do a lot of fishing, nature walks, and sleepovers with other homeschoolers.

the best thing is you can see them learning. its amazing how much they can learn in just a couple of hours one on one. 10x what they can learn sitting in a classroom.

overall, i would not go back.

you are supposed to do lots of organized activities with other children. mine do sports with a rec league, take outside classes, and have regular get togethers with a group of families that do the same. they get a lot more playtime with other children than they did back when we were in the private school rat race.

The best ones I've heard of are the kids of the Ranger who lives at the base of Hualasupai, like two miles in the ground.  They're home schooled because it's either that or they're sent to boarding school.  They've done well, used much the same kind of curriculum developed for remote schooling in Oz.  Different genres of course.
