It looks like Michael Savages Law suit against CAIR (under it's work with Hate Hurts America) will be dismissed next week. I'm very pleased. Taking away his money is one of the best things we can do. I spoke to the lawyer for is working the AT&T case for the EFF today. Very interesting. And one thing that stuck me was just how huge the guns are lined up against us. And how it kind of pisses me off that we have to convince our OWN DEMOCRATIC Senators to demand the president follow the law. And then I though, "Hey why let the Republican's off the Hook, don't THEY have an obligation to follow the law? What gives, have we just ceded the whole "go ahead and break the law" thing to them?
Sure it's great to go after the Bush Dog democrats, but why should the republican's get a free ride?

Was reading the 2/25 issue of Newsweek ... they said:
"Looking to the fall, Barack Obama gives John McCain a backhanded compliment by citing McCain's 'half century' of service. We get it, Barack: he's old. Not cool."
It's interesting that Clinton's comment about McCain got so much airplay (especially here) yet Obama's was completely off the radar screen. I know, I know ... she took a swipe at Obama in the process, but nevertheless, he got a complete pass for his comment, while she didn't.
We have to be very careful about how we are being played by the media, and how we are feeding into the increased vitriol between the two candidates.

not counting him out quite yet, but the air is going out of the balloon very quickly and he seems either unable or unwilling to change the dynamic. i wouldn't doubt he doesn't win tomorrow, although i think he'll be ok in MS.
then it's off to PA, where if history holds, he'll start to gain a bit, and get smacked back with negative attacks. it's in many ways more daunting then ohio because it's even older and redder then ohio. if there's a saving grace it's that he's got weeks for people to get to know him there, vs a 2 week blitz thru commercials.
i see a long slow slide, with more trouble every day because no one will align with a candidate that can't or won't fight back. he's gonna have a hard time attracting new superdelegates.

One thing that occurred to me that was nobody is in charge of coordinating the response to the telcos and the WH when it came to what they are pushing.
It's a bunch of bloggers and groups, but there is no "Spokesman" for the whole
"Don't let the telcos get immunity and don't let the Bush people get off with out discovery."
Frankly it's like those deals where some multibillion dollar group wants one thing and puts it on the ballot and all these other groups have to scrap together money to oppose it, it just pisses me off when that happens.

Dear Speaker Pelosi:
I was talking to a lawyer for the Electronic Freedom Foundation today. He told me how their entire yearly budget is 2.5 million dollars. They are standing up for the rule of law, they are standing up for our privacy, they are standing against the law breaking telcos and the White House who want what they want and will fix the laws if they can't get it.
I asked, "Who can I get to help you? What other corporations or groups have the kind of money and lobbying power that the telcos have to buy this immunity via "education" and false fear?
He didn't have an answer.
Then it occurred to me. It's your job to stand up for the rule of law. You can stand up for our privacy. And you aren't letting terrorists win when you demand a FISA warrant. The terrorists win when we ignore our laws. Especially when those laws are perfectly capable of doing what we need to do.
You can stand up to the White House and say, "No."
You can demand the White House not spy without a warrant.
You can demand corporations follow the law and not just take the word of the President.
You can say, "I will NOT allow changes in a bill so that no one is punished for lawbreaking."
You can demand to know WHO was being spied upon.
You can say to the Bush White House,"Stop playing the fear card! Let ME see who you really listened to and I'll determine if this is appropriate spying." And if he balks, you can ask why. "Is it because my name is the list, Mr. President?
I NEED you to be on the side of law. I NEED you to stand up for my privacy. I don't want to believe that the telcos can buy their way out of the rules found in the Constitution based on some arm twisting, clever wording and the a worn out fear card.

What I do not understand is WHY it is so hard for people on this blog to understand how turned off people are by this sort of behavior. You ask why only fifty per cent of Americans vote for the president (or sixty per cent) and this is the reason.
Why can't we just have a race about the issues? Why do we accept this bullshit? Why do we encourage this? You say grow up? I say, no. You tell me I am not a good American if I do not accept that this is way things are. I tell you that I am a good American because I will NEVER accept this view of my country.

the novelty of a woman condidate is less spell binding in a place that's had women voting since before it was a state, that had female statewide office holders before 1900, and a multi-term female governor starting around 1925.

And when Hillary complimented McCain for his lifetime of service, she got blasted for sucking up to the enemy. Obama didn't.
Yeah, but she pretty much said that McBush was qualified to be "commander in chief" and that Obama isn't.
I think that's out of bounds.
When Obama talks about McBush, he always says, "we respect his service but he's a fucking fossil on the issues and he's wrong about everything. And he's old."
I think that's a lot different.

No, I am not surprised that we agree sometimes. At the core we probably agree most of the time.
I have thought long about this question of what is acceptable and my conclusion is the one I have just stated. I am tired of the lies. (Even a few minutes ago when I was putting the dogs and wife to bed, I turned on the local news and they repeated the lie that Obama assured the Canadians that he really did not mean what he said about NAFTA but this time they ADDED that he did not really mean that he would withdraw the troops from Iraq - the whispering campaign and lies keep coming and we know where they are coming from, don't we?)

Zap: My mom was on Chemo and she had a rough time, I should have called her more, but I just didn't. But after Christmas when my Dad asked me why I said I had no excuses but it's hard sometimes when the blogosphere has become such a big part of my life and beating back on the crazy talk radio hosts to talk to my republican mom. She listens to Rush and quotes him back to us. I really don't want to argue with her about stuff because It's not worth it, but for people like her who are RWAs (as Dean wrote about in his book) they really are sucked in to the stuff that Rush and Hannity put out.
Right wing Talk radio is hurting the country, it divides us and I fell for it and it kept me a bit distance from my family. They fell for it too since I was an "evil liberal" on "the left coast" with all the "fruits and nuts"
I don't like my parents being turned against me just because Rush Limbaugh and the Right Wing Noise machine needs us to the the enemy for ratings purposes.
John Stewart said it best. "Stop it, you're hurting America."
For me I'm trying to reduce it or stop in the good old fashion way, make it less profitable. When it isn't as profitable as before then they might tone it down. And if they don't I point out just how over the top they are to the remaining advertisers. It takes more time, but it IS having an impact and they can't whine about their "free speech" on commercially supported broadcast radio. They just lose their financial support.

Yes, but they also believe those women should pop them out in the kitchen, not the governor's office. In fact, a huge part of the reason why they think women should keep popping out babies is because they thin that will/should keep women in the kitchen and out of competition w/ men.

(I knew I should have just gone to bed)
Brooklyn Girl,
I am NOT disputing that elections are nasty things. What I am disputing is Hillary Clinton's decision to go extremely NEGATIVE AFTER she has lost. According to what I am reading she cannot win the primary elections outright. She cannot even win the superdelegates at this point without some sort of subterfuge.
The question then becomes: Why is she trying to tear apart the presumptive nominee of the party? Perhaps she feels that she can still win but if that is the case, she is playing a very dangerous game by tearing apart the party. (And again, according to what I have read, this is not even possible anyway. Like the election last Tuesday. She is going to end up, by winning, with less than a dozen delegates more than Obama. That is not much a of a win)
So why is she doing it? Ego? She cannot stand the fact that she is losing? A desperate chance of winning at ANY cost (including the election?) A ploy to set party members against each other in hope of setting up some sort of confrontation that will enable the CLinton's longstanding to serve as a benefit?
None of these are viable in my opinion. Yes, elections in this day and age are nasty things but can't we save our vitriol for our enemies and in races where we can actually win something? At this point all of this nastiness is only going to make us lose.
On a brighter note, I loved this little capsule review of 10,000 BC from the Detroit News.

And neither one's going to go into the convention with enough votes to put them over the top. The sooner they decide on a "unity" ticket the better.
What would be better TV than a real convention to decide the nominee? The idea that it would somehow be bad is silly - McCain won't be able to buy the coverage the Dems will be getting for free all summer. And the polls I've heard about say the Dem voters by a large margin are pretty happy to let it go to the convention.
That said, if they're really still deadlocked by then, I have a hard time imagining a ticket without both of them on it. If Reagan could suck it up and take on Poppy, one of them can take the other.

51%-49% in the vote count at present and neither will be able to gather enough elected delegates to go over. If that's not a tie, I don;t know what is.
Which one might think would give some folks pause. This has gone on as long as it has because a whole lot of people, regardless of which candidate you support, disagree with you. We'll find a compromise in the end and move on to the important issue: beating McCain. But claiming that either candidate is "the will of the people" or the only decent human in the race is kind of like Bush claiming that his "win" in 2004 was a "mandate" that came with immense "political capital."

Prof, I totally respect your position on this election and I'm not just blowing smoke up your ass.
I'm dealing with the same internal struggle.
I too, voted for Hillary. I've supported Obama for 6 months, but when the moment of truth came and I saw those names listed on my _paper ballot_ (in Ohio, we had the choice), I can't explain it.
Maybe part of me want did it to make this thing continue, in which case I am a cynical prick. Yet I admire Obama enough that I felt as if I needed to see him tested. And that I would ultimately have another chance to vote for him.
I feel like a man who's had his heart broken, and upon meeting someone new who he's attracted to, he has to make sure this is The One. This is the woman who will be there when the going gets rough.

I seem to repeat this rant often. This isn't 1968. Bush isn't LBJ. Clinton and Obama aren't Humphrey, McCarthy and RFK. there haven't been two major assassinations. There were 500,000 troops in Vietnam, and a draft.
This is, on the other hand, a year when the Republican candidate is someone who embraces an unpopular war, and is so unliked in his own party that they happily gave him up for dead a year ago. When Democratic voters turn out in record-breaking numbers far higher than Republicans. When the whole goddamned world, and 80% of the country, want a change from Bushist government.

By point out that obama crying for Hillary's White House papers when he won't release his state senate papers makes him a faker? By pointing out from day one obama pushed the most vile and disgeusting rat wing lies and still hasn't stopped to this day?
How will any of those vile and disgusting things obama is doing help you and me and America? For us Americans that's what it's about. obamatons not so much.
Is TP being "loyal to a candidate":
Obama Adviser: I ‘Strongly’ Believe Telecoms ‘Should Be Granted Immunity’
Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) has consistently spoken out and voted against granting retroactive immunity for telecoms that participated with the administration’s warrantless wiretapping program. This stance was part of the reason he won the support of Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT), a leader on civil liberties issues.
One of Obama’s advisers on intelligence and foreign policy advisers, however, is someone who “strongly” supports telecomm immunity. John Brennan is a former CIA official and the current chairman of the Intelligence and National Security Alliance. In a new National Journal interview, Brennan makes it clear that he agrees with the Bush administration on the issue of immunity... http://thinkprogress.org/2008/03.../obama-brennan/

According to cnn's John King, even if Hillary wins every remaining primary, including Mi and Fl, she's still behind Barak. My take is that the magic delegate # is 100. If, at the end, Barak is ahead by 100 or more, the supers will be persuaded to go with him, but if he's ahead by less than 100, it's every super for her/himself and Hillary may very well take it. That's why she has to fight so severely until the end...to whittle his lead in delegates, and making him appear weak and inexperienced and not "tough" enough is a surefire way of eroding his lead. He has to show that he has the mettle to rise to this challenge and also to prove that he is made of the same teflon that reagan was made of, where criticisms bounce off ineffectively. He didn't show it last week but maybe he's learned from that miscue and will rebound. From what I gather, if the Obama enthusiasts feel the nomination was unfairly and undemocratically taken away from him, they've vowed to Chicagoize Denver to the point where the streets will be on fire.

BTW, last week I linked to an article about a remedial math teacher at Cal State Hayward who got canned for refusing to sign a "loyalty oath."
A Cal State East Bay math teacher and practicing Quaker who was fired for refusing to sign a state-required loyalty oath got her job back this week with an apology from the university and a clarification that the oath does not require employees to take up arms in violation of their religious beliefs.
"It's the best possible outcome," said Marianne Kearney-Brown, 50, a graduate student in mathematics who was teaching a remedial class for undergraduates. "My concerns have been addressed."
As a Quaker, Kearney-Brown is committed to nonviolence and was unwilling to sign the state oath of allegiance that required her to "swear (or affirm)" that she would "support and defend" the U.S. and California constitutions "against all enemies, foreign and domestic." She tried inserting the word "nonviolently" in front of the word "support," but was told by university officials that altering the oath was unacceptable.
Kearney-Brown, a former high school math teacher, was fired Feb. 28 after six weeks on the job at the Hayward campus. She filed a grievance with the help of her union, the United Auto Workers.
In a grievance hearing Thursday conducted in a telephone conference call, an attorney for the California State University chancellor's office presented Kearney-Brown with a statement saying in part, "Signing the oath does not carry with it any obligation or requirement that public employees bear arms or otherwise engage in violence."
With that statement stapled to the loyalty oath, and a promise by the university to present the clarifying language to other new employees, Kearney-Brown said Friday that she felt comfortable signing the form and returning to work.
"We're very happy with the results," said Clara Potes-Fellow, a spokeswoman for the CSU chancellor's office. "The university would very much like her to be an employee. ... We were acting in good faith and we wanted to resolve the situation in a positive way."

The last 7 years (30, actually) have beaten us to a pulp. No wonder tempers are flaring as we grab the last branch, hoping we can climb up that hill. That sort of attitude on approach is much more common than most people imagine. Obviously that is on the extreme, but sitting at a window on a passenger jet its not easy to tell that the aircraft is not always centerline to centerline with the runway.

You could see he was not only crabbing but side-slipping, coming in, so he was giving it some right aileron (or so it looked). When he tried to do the flare-out, he was also leveling his wings. It seemed to me, after watching the video a couple of times, that instead of leveling, he rolled the starboard wingtip a few degrees above level.
With that kind of crosswind, wouldn't that help explain why he rolled to the left so suddenly, particularly if he got hit by a peak gust right then?
(Admission: Not a real pilot. I just play one on the computer, so this stuff interests me.)

Landing in LAX about 10 yrs ago.
A couple of years ago, coming into KC I noticed that the plane was descending steeper and faster than is typical for a passenger jet. It was kinda fun actually. as we approached the airport I could see why, a thunderstorm was approaching.
We leveled out and begun a normal approach and maybe 6 miles short of the runway we got into the influence of the storm... turbulence at altitude is one thing, but at that point the roller coaster effect at low altitude was very disturbing.

the old Hong Kong airport was infamous.
I was a flight to Pisa (Italy) once... they have (had?) the same problem: the only place to put a runway was often not even close to being aligned with he prevailing winds.. that landing was rough and very sideways.

Can't help but think that Bush and his loyal brownshirts Negroponte and Abrams are upset about this:
Here's how to do crosswind landings. Mostly Boeing test pilots during certification trials.
Are you fucking kidding me?
This happens that often?
It looks like the idea is to ignore the angle, and just stick the landing. But isn't there an angle at which it's impossible to land at?

Boeing recommends to land in the crab, keep the crosswind correction in all the way to touchdown.
Which a lot of guys have problems with, cause you are trained from day one to land on the centerline. But in a crab, to get the main gear on centerline, the view from the cockpit will be way off to one side of the runway.
Once it lands, it will slew around to heading down the runway, you just have to belive in physics.
A lot of guys will try and kick the crab out at the last moment, and thats when bad stuff happens.

Bob was on the BOD when I was at Evergreen, his Commander wore our paint scheme for many years. I had the chance to have a few Tanguareys with him in Los Angeles. Never had to worry about the bar closing, there was always another bottle in his briefcase.

One reason I hate the DLC so much is they've fought tooth and nail against Dean's 50 state plan.
They basically concede the so-called "red" states to the republicans and refuse to put resources into the state.
And what's the result of that? You get places like Alaska and Texas where crazee people take over the state leges and the state government.
You get creationists on your school boards and in your state agencies. You get morons pushing abstinence training in your schools. You get declining school systems and flat earthers getting elected to public office.
You get idiots like John Cornyn and Abu Gonzales getting serious state jobs that lead to serious federal jobs.
This crap has serious consequences. And if Hillary's crowd takes over you'll see everything that Dr. Dean has built get torn down as Terry McAullife and Mark fucking Jabba the Hut Penn launch their 50 plus 1 plan to recapture the flag.

Which is Obama's problem (in Hillary's eyes). He didn't wait his turn. He had the audacity to challenge her when she believes it's her time.

Which is what I thought at first when he announced.
We had a good shot of 16 years of the White House.
But hell, he's proved himself, even if I think he shoulda waited. I don't see the need to get all nasty on him because he has ambition.
When ya get down to it, all the folks have egos the size of Mount Everest, and asking any of em to wait just aint gonna happen.

And the fact of the matter is that he can bring in new voters and help us in the down ticket races.
She cannot.

I'm planning on using both of those to drop the high summer temps at my place here. You cannot run the foggers continously, but with a little rain capture, there should be enough water to cool things outside as much as I need to.
There is about 10" of rain here a year, most which if you don't capture it, runs off and floods the local washes. If you were to capture all of it, that's about 1/4 million gallons of water per year per acre.
Well, it is 271,574 gallons to be exact.
