…millions of full-time workers are being downgraded to part-time, as businesses slash labor costs to remain above water. Because people are working less, wages have fallen by 0.3% this year. Factories are operating at only 65% capacity, while the overall jobless rate hit 9.5%. Throw in discouraged workers who want full-time work, and the labor underutilization rate climbed to 16.5%.

I get John McCain's contempt for WalMart shoppers. His family had money and position when Cindy's father moved to Phoenix with his own first wife. But Mary Matalin used to be one of those people she's sneering at here. Now she thinks they're too dumb to see her contempt.

Unfortunately, by resigning, I think the left and national media will be emboldened to ritualistically engage in the metaphorical gang raping of conservative politicians, particularly those who are female and have children. They’ll decide savaging Palin’s family drove her from office, so the sky’s the limit on the next conservative with kids.
Lieberals forced Palin's teenage daughter to get knocked up out of wedlock, forced her sister-in-law to deal meth, forced Palin to be a flaming idiot and a violence-inducing asshole who is corrupt, and forced her to parade her family around as props.

Pawlenty can hide behind the recession, just like any governor can. He's not running for re-election, so he's got ample time and resources to polish himself up for the national stage, which he got a lot of traction doing for the '08 election as a voice for McCain.
He stuck to his single-minded "no new taxes" horseshit, actually got a bump in approval when the bridge collapsed, is an Evangelical, and has his "nice guy"/"moderate" image down pat. He's also very calm and smart, and comes off as likable.
