There needs to be accountability but there also needs to be proportionality. This country is engaged in two wars and has serious, serious domestic problems. To stop everything and attempt to impeach and remove a president who has less than a year to serve would not strike me as the best use of our energy. And for what? So Dick Cheney can be president?
There could be a joint impeachment. Big Dick leads the parade in false statements.

I don't even think Broder is on Karl Rove's side in this. I just think he's a person to whom the Big Lie is much more worthy of protection than the truth. The whole Lewinsky affair was about the personal honor of one man, Bill Clinton. 9/11 and Iraq are about the honor of our whole country. That is to say, while Clinton dishonored only himself, Bush dishonored all of us. The latter can be a lot more difficult for people to admit, because their own egos are at stake. Hence the tenacity of the Big Lie.

The biggest arguments against impeachment are that it's too late and that it is guaranteed not to have a just outcome. Prosecution after the ends of their terms stands a much better chance. Somebody should have asked Broder what he thought of that.

1) He's pretty damn good at not showing his hand.

bonddad over at kos has an excellent diary on the rec'd list about why oil has and may continue to go up in price. He offers market charts and 27 reasons for the problem.
And, as some here have stated, he suggests that the cost of oil has increased because of the weakening value of the dollar, the fact that this counry is woefully lax in the development of energy policy, and the industrial growth and development in China and Indiana.

Two weeks ago Cliff Kincaid, president of the conservative group America's Survival Inc., called a press conference in Washington to challenge the mainstream media to look into the hard-core left-wingers who are known to have influenced Barack Obama -- first as a teenager in Hawaii and later in Chicago. Specifically, Kincaid's group wants a major news organization to follow up on the investigative work it has done that documents that an elderly black man who mentored Sen. Obama in Hawaii was a lifelong member of the Communist Party USA.

While late, let me somewhat defend Mr. Broder here. It won't happen often.
Mr. Border somewhat reasonably points out that there isn't a good way to impeach Mr. Bush while he in in office. There isn't enough time and the resulting Cheney presidency would be far worse.
Unspoken, impeachment would distract people from observing the failures of the Bush Administration so as to make an informed choice about the 2008 election.
I would prefer Mr. Broder to write that the Political Industry failed so completely with the selection and promotion of Mr. Bush that there is little that can be done, other than to replace most of the Industry in 2008. This replacement should include pundits, such as Mr. Broder.

There will be justice of a sort, if you're willing to wait for it.
Just as the press globally was regarded as an important part of the good things that happened when Nixon was removed, and praised in the history books ever since, so too the likes of Broder and Brooks and Friedman and all the rest will be vilified and condemned for their manifold failures.
Imagine if your father were Thomas Friedman, and some years from now you're reading a history of these times. Wouldn't you be ashamed?
Would any parent willfully visit that on his or her descendants?
On the other hand, the Wilson-Plame kids have actual heroes for parents...

Czar is the Russian word for Caesar.
Ralphie |
06.07.08 - 11:58 am | #
Following his conquest of Constantinople in 1453, the victorious Ottoman sultan Mehmed II was the first of the rulers of the Ottoman Empire to assume the title "Caesar of the Roman Empire" (Ottoman Turkish Kayser-i-Rûm). Here, the Caesar title should not be understood as the minor title it had become, but as the glorious title of the emperors of the past, a connotation that had been preserved in Persian and Arabic. The adoption of the title also implied that the Ottoman state considered itself the continuation, by absorption, of the Roman Empire, a view not shared in the West. Acting in his capacity as Caesar of the Roman Empire, Mehmed reinstated the defunct Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.
Caesar was Julius Caesar's family name, and was later used by the Roman Emperors as a title.
The Old Man From Scene 24 |
Homepage |
06.07.08 - 12:02 pm | #
The history of "Caesar" as an imperial title is reflected by the following monarchic titles, usually reserved for "Emperor" and "Empress" in many languages (note that the name Caesar, pronounced see-zer in English, was pronounced kai-sahr in Classical Latin):
Germanic languages:
* Danish: Kejser & Kejserinde;
* Dutch: Keizer & Keizerin;
* German: Kaiser & Kaiserin;
* Icelandic: Keisari & Keisaraynja;
* Faroese: Keisari & Keisarinna;
* Norwegian: Keiser & Keiserinne;
* Swedish: Kejsare & Kejsarinna
* Old English: casere ( honorific used by early English kings )
And--as Nietzsche says--out of chaos comes order.

Greenwald...
No matter how many times one sees it, it will never cease to amaze that the exact same media mavens who righteously strutted around demanding that Bill Clinton be impeached or forced to resign because the "honor" of our political system demanded that, continue casually to dismiss every crime of the last seven years as nothing more than a garden-variety, good faith "policy dispute" which only shrill rabble want to see "turned into a criminal or impeachable affair."
Another thing the media did with Clinton is second guess every military move he ever instigated, accusing him of "wagging the dog" in Kosovo. The fucks sure as hell weren't automatically assuming that he or people in his administration were telling the truth, the default position with Bush.

The mister and I were discussing the media's role in all of the crimes that have been committed by this White House for the past 7 years, and the reason they continue to dismiss them is because they are part and parcel and accomplices of these crimes by their endorsements of them. They are owned by the republican party entirely. I believe if there were investigations made, it would be found that this White House continued to pay reporters and to work with the corporate owners of the few media outlets we have available to us on the television.
It has been and continues to be a full partnership with the media to deceive and manipulate the American people and we're about to see it turned on full force for the upcoming elections.

Not that Clinton should have resigned over theRepublicans' filthy, pornographic tactics, but certaily Gore finishing out the term would have led to Gore being overwhelmingly elected, no 9/11, and 7000 Americans alive and home with their families, among many other benefits to the population of the USA and the rest of the world..

When I was a young man (and I really had only the most rudimentary of mechanical skills), I was lured by the "need for speed".
I think that's where it all really began.
Y'see...I was never a vocational education type of guy. I studied the academic curriculum in preperation for college, then really didn't decide I wanted to be an engineer until way after I had graduated High School.
That's a funny thing, because when I look back...the vocational-style two year study programs, really are a better path to the engineering disciplines.
The essential problem...is the merger of what four year programs call "applied" science...merging that knowledge with what is known as simply "engineering" in most major colleges.

I have a dream--every numb skill knuckleheaded pundit is required to "volunteer" to serve in Iraq, call it the "American Patriot Volunteer Program", a forced volunteer program to include AEI/Cato shill, serving as rear guard troops while we withdraw the real heros. Let them take the bombs, theheat, the deaths, the wounds. Broder could serve in a hospital, timmeh drive a no-protection suv, etc. etc. Crazy I know, but that's the ONLY way these dumb fucks will ever GET IT that they helped Bush into the white house and we are all suffering the consequences. Call it a reality check for those who live in the make believe media Village.
If Obama is elected president, you people are going to be very disappointed. He will not change anything! Why, because he doesn't know how!

The price of oil keeps skyrocketing because idiots in Israel say bombing iran is inevitable, and we have managed to piss off nearly every Arab with any sense of honor into cutting back production from the oil reserves.
And we are led to believe by the punditry its the fault of chinese and india.
We are still being sold and buying the lies to excuse this fucked bush administration.

I propose that Broder and Klein be promoted to the status of "wanker emeriti" and the daily wankers be confined to more obscure, less well-known who nevertheless are doing their bit to make Inside Washington the long lasting Soap Opera that it has become today.

We've put up with a lot from you, "Atrios", but this is it. You've finally gone TOO FAR.
Attacking DAVID BRODER? What's next? Mom? The flag? Jesus? Washington and Lincoln?
If I didn't feel so faint I'd let you have a piece of my mind, bet on it!
