The pundits are wrong this time.
I am seeing a sea change in American politics. Voters are no longer buying the Repuke talking points and red herring issues like abortion and gay marriage.
Unfortunately, it took a crashing economy to wake the voters up.
The Repukes will try to gay-bash again this fall but it won't work.
And I hope the media points up the fact that many Repukes are hypocrites on this issue because they are closet cases themselves.
The White House is full of them, including the Oval Office.

OT repost: oh my, the Duggars might have some competition - Chloe, Jade, Lewis, Ben, Kimberley, Cameron, Orlando, Amee, Natalie, Chris, Nathan, Celeste, Olias - meet the Simpson kids
Deborah and Derek have 13 children - and they want more. Decca Aitkenhead meets them
extract: Were you to put all the kids from six average families in one house, you still wouldn't have as many as Derek and Deborah Simpson. With 13, aged from two to 21, Deborah has now been pregnant for 117 months - almost 10 years of her life. They spend between £600 and £700 at the supermarket every week, and pocket money alone works out at £240 a month. When the whole family goes on holiday together, they have to hire a bus, and if Deborah and Derek ever get a whole uninterrupted hour together in the evening, they laugh that it's the equivalent of most people's two-week summer holiday.
"A lot of women have come up to me and said, 'I've got two and I can't wait for them to be grown up and out my hair,'" Deborah marvels, wide-eyed. "I just think that's sad. I can't even imagine feeling that because I enjoy every single minute of them. We just love babies."
Deborah and Derek love them so much, in fact, that they are now trying for their 14th.

When Mildred Loving passed away recently, I was deeply moved by a quotation from her:
Surrounded as I am now by wonderful children and grandchildren, not a day goes by that I don't think of Richard and our love, our right to marry, and how much it meant to me to have that freedom to marry the person precious to me, even if others thought he was the "wrong kind of person" for me to marry. I believe all Americans, no matter their race, no matter their sex, no matter their sexual orientation, should have that same freedom to marry. Government has no business imposing some people's religious beliefs over others. Especially if it denies people's civil rights.
I am still not a political person, but I am proud that Richard's and my name is on a court case that can help reinforce the love, the commitment, the fairness, and the family that so many people, black or white, young or old, gay or straight seek in life. I support the freedom to marry for all. That's what Loving, and loving, are all about.

Newsom's actions were derided by many at the time as just a stunt. Perhaps it was. But it ultimately led to this week's ruling.
Since NTodd's not around, I'll note that there is often value in doing SOMETHING, even if, at the time, you're not sure how it's going to all play out. "Stunts" and "symbolic gestures" aren't enough, but they're often a good place to start.

Plenty of my gay and lesbian friends have mixed feelings about marriage being the centerpiece of the gay rights movement, especially as it crowds out everything else. I can understand that, but nonetheless
This implies that your gay and lesbian friends who have mixed feelings about marriage being the centerpiece of the gay rights movement don't understand the importance of this step toward making gays and lesbians equal under law, which, by the way is the default assumption. People are presumed to be equal before the law, aren't they?

Backers of a proposed November ballot measure constitutionally banning same-sex marriage said the court’s decision would help their cause by energizing voters.
Twenty-six states have approved constitutional amendments banning same-sex marriage. Courts in New York, Maryland and Washington state have refused to allow gay marriage. New Jersey’s highest court gave the state lawmakers the option of establishing civil unions as an alternative. Massachusetts is the only other state to legalize gay marriage, also by judicial decision.
What are the prospects for passage of a constitutional amendment removing equal protection for gays and lesbians in California?

We ought to flood the ballot with even more stupid Constitutional Amendments, like the amendment to enslave any Californian who voted to re-elect the criminals in the White House, or to make it unconstitutional to permit science denying creationist to rent or own property.

The couple never planned on having a big family when they got together in their late teens. Deborah nearly died giving birth to their first child, and they thought they would never have another.
"But," she says, "it has always just come to a point, when they get a little bit bigger, when we say, 'Oh, we'd love to have another one.' We never really discussed it - we just hoped it would happen. And it did."
After their fourth arrived, relatives began to ask if they didn't think that was enough. Neither comes from a particularly big family - Deborah was one of two, Derek one of four - and there was no religious motivation for keeping going. Softly spoken and self-effacing, they seem entirely conventional and their children's names have faithfully followed the prevailing fashions, starting with Chloe and Kimberly and ending with Jade and Orlando. They are, however, formidably determined to prove it is possible to have a big family without letting standards slip.

TKK,
I don't think this was an attempt to influence the election, even though most of the judges were Republican appointees. The opinion's well-written and based firmly on precedent and the Cal. constitution. If anything, the timing could be due to the fact that a lot of judicial clerks end their year about now and courts like to get big opinions out so the new clerks won't have to pick the case up in the middle.

Compare the InstaParrot's legal thinking to that of the folks over at Balkinization
:::Today's California Supreme Court decision is certainly momentous, and worthy of celebration, for obvious reasons. It will, I think, come to be seen as part of the grand tradition of that Court, as exemplified by its bold 1948 decision in Perez v. Sharp, which prompted numerous states to abandon their anti-miscegenation laws, eventually leading to Loving v. Virginia. But wholly apart from the particular holding on same-sex marriage -- which is plenty important in and of itself, even if it has only a third of the precedential effect that Perez had -- it strikes me that the most significant legal development in the Court's decision is that it is (to my knowledge) the first time any state or federal court of last resort has held that discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation is suspect and thus subject to strict scrutiny under a constitutional equal protection clause. See pages 95-101 of the majority opinion.:::

What Newsom did wasn't a stunt. it was a political act committed by an actual politician. Soemthing far rarer than hen's teeth. A friend of mine married his boyfriend in those feew heady happy days in San Frabncisco at the insistence of their children.
My favorite image, which I can't find on the net at the moment, is of a couple of guys, resplendent in their tuxedos, running down the city hall steps with big smiles and their faces having just been married, and in their hand they were holding paltes with big pieces of wedding cake on them. Man did I ever want to go to that reception!

Rove has done more, single-handedly, to ensure a Democratic victory this Fall than any other person on the planet. Keep it up, Karl.
My thoughts exactly. Note that Rover was doing what he always does - attacking the other side for stuff he's responsible for:
The values of those people you diminished are the values of America
Fuck you Karl. We're coming after you. You can run but you can't ghide.

Good morning, friends.
I found this on one of my RootsWeb.com mailing lists.
Needless to say, many of us were appalled. This organization sounds like many of today's Repugs except for the part about their supporting the separation of church and state:
"In 1845 the Union of Workers was founded in Philadelphia. Its members were working people, actually men only, who opposed immigration, most
particularly of Catholics. Additionally, they provided in this pre-insurance era, a sick fund and a funeral fund which was incentive to join whether or not you were a bigot. They changed their name to the Order of United American Mechanics. Only native born, white, "Americans" who believed in a supreme being who controlled it all and kept things in order, were allowed to join.
Ironically, many of the parents of these members, not being "native
born," were not eligible to join and receive the insurance benefits. These
people supported the separation of church and state, and members could not be involved in the liquor trade. Their basic reason for supporting this
"non-sectarian" attitude was in its opposition to Catholic parochial
schools. The founding of this organization and others like it coincided with the massive immigration of Irish escaping the starvation of their potato
famine."

not to be a knee-jerk apologist, but maybe Obama has to play his political strategy close to the hip. He's encountered a mega-dose of racial discrimination, and we hear not word one about it from him.
However, avoiding alliances with persons close to controversial issues might be unwise at the time.

Oh well, I meant that thers said that his family was possibly in danger, that he might have to leave and hide. I asked what kind of danger and got no answer.

Also a warning not to vote for Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama or any other Democrat and to keep the troops in Iraq until Armageddon.

BOSTON (CBS) ― U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy was airlifted to a Boston hospital Saturday morning after falling ill at the Kennedy compound in Hyannisport, Mass., the Cape Cod Times reported.
He was first rushed to Cape Cod Hospital, and after being in the emergency room for two hours he was transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital, according to the Times.
If they kept him at the emergency room for two hours before moving him, that doesn't sound as bad as original reports implied.

Interesting what happens when you bring up uncomfortable facts about Barack Obama...
My point is that he is craven politician like anyone else and those who praise him as some type of amazing, all-inclusive leader are, quite simply, full of shit. Obama has stuck his finger in eye of thousands of gays in San Francisco by refusing to be photographed with Mayor Newsom. Deny it, if you must. But it is sadly true...
And to all you idiots who call me a Republican troll, really now: FUCK YOU. A serious, deeply meant FUCK YOU.

Obama only needs 160 more delegates.
He's getting most of Edwards' delegates and superdelegates are endorsing him every day.
Hillary is finished. And she will be blamed for hurting the party, so I hope she loses her Senate seat to a Dem challenger too.
