GravatarFROM SLATE: THE DAY MCCAIN LOST

For Bill Clinton in 1992, it was the economy, stupid. For John McCain in 2008, it was the stupid economy. Exit polls showed that 62 percent of the electorate said the economy was the most important issue.

But when, precisely, did John McCain lose the narrative on the economy? Was it last July, when economic adviser Phil Gramm, discussing the "mental recession," noted that "we've sort of become a nation of whiners"? Perhaps it was back in December 2007, when McCain said, "The issue of economics is not something I've understood as well as I should." Or was McCain's economic goose cooked long before the campaigns started? Ray Fair, the Yale professor who plugs macroeconomic data into an election-predicting model, said that "since November 2006, the model has consistently been predicting that the Democratic candidate would get about 52 percent of the two-party vote."

McCain never lost the narrative on the economy. His problem is that most of the public didn't believe the story he's been telling his entire career.

GravatarAwwwwwwwwww... the bigots are upset they're being called bigots!

A commercial opposing Proposition 8 also drew criticism. In it, two actors portraying Mormon missionaries forced their way into the well-kept home of a married lesbian couple.

"Hi, we're here from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints," one says. "We're here to take away your rights," says his partner.

The missionaries then rip the wedding rings from the women's fingers and ransack their house until they find the women's marriage license, which they destroy.

"Hey, we have rights," one of the women says.

"Not if we can help it," answers the missionary.

The ad was produced by an independent group not affiliated with the official No-on-8 campaign and was shown on MSNBC and Comedy Central, according to Rick Jacobs of the Courage Campaign, a progressive political group.

Jeff Flint, strategist for Yes on 8, called the ad "despicable" and said it "crossed every line of decency."

"I am appalled at the level of Mormon-bashing that went on during the Proposition 8 campaign and continues to this day," he said. "If this activity were directed against any other church, if someone put up a website that targeted Jews or Catholics in a similar fashion for the mere act of participating in a political campaign, it would be widely and rightfully condemned."

Hey, Jeff? Go fuck yourself, bigot. Fuck. Yourself. With. A. Rusty. Fucking. Chainsaw.

GravatarHamster died.

GravatarLook at how the One has healed the country's divide with his divine
presence:

...
Geoffrey, a student at UCLA and regular Rod 2.0 reader, joined the massive protest outside the Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Westwood. Geoffrey was called the n-word at least twice.

It was like being at a klan rally except the klansmen were wearing Abercrombie polos and Birkenstocks. YOU NIGGER, one man shouted at men. If your people want to call me a FAGGOT, I will call you a nigger. Someone else said same thing to me on the next block near the temple...me and my friend were walking, he is also gay but Korean, and a young WeHo clone said after last night the niggers better not come to West Hollywood if they knew what was BEST for them.

...
Three older men accosted my friend and shouted, "Black people did this, I hope you people are happy!" A young lesbian couple with mohawks and Obama buttons joined the shouting and said there were "very disappointed with black people" and "how could we" after the Obama victory. This was stupid for them to single us out because we were carrying those blue NO ON PROP 8 signs! I pointed that out and the one of the older men said it didn't matter because "most black people hated gays" and he was "wrong" to think we had compassion. That was the most insulting thing I had ever heard. I guess he never thought we were gay.

GravatarGee, isn't it all cozy seeing the Republican-fascists so concerned about my civil rights, not.

Gay marriage isn't going to be the law of the land any time soon, support is going to have to be built among white and black people. It's interesting that as gay people are denied employment and public accommodation protections, that it's a right that the majority of gay men and lesbians don't choose to exercise in Mass. that gets all the attention.

Civil union is marriage by any other name as long as it has the same legal rights and protections included. It's just a word signifying not much. Marriage will come, but not in the near future.

As for the Republican-fascists trying to make hay of the issue, not falling for it. Die, Nazis.

A distinction without a difference, it seems to me. But the denial of fundamental rights simply on the basis of sexual orientation is ridiculous, and it saddens me that one group of people who struggled for so long would deny those rights to another group.

GravatarBrooklyn Girl, jury dutied, it's a denial of rights but considering the other rights that are denied to us it's not the key to our survival. As we're not going to have it any time soon, it's a better use of our time to get what we can and to build towards full equality under the law.

Frankly, considering how many straight marriages end in divorce or misery, I'd rather try something a bit different.

Not for gay people. It's perfectly legal to deny us all kinds of rights on the basis of gender preference in many states. The slogan applied to us is a bit premature.

Not defending the Catholic Church, but a lot of Latinos have gone over to these evangelical cults the last decade.

They got a little pissed off about the Church closing inner city churches in order to have money to pay for those sexual molestation lawsuits.

GravatarBlack people and latinos didn't vote all the same way, talking about hundreds of thousands and millions of people as if they formed a cohesive bloc of voters on any issue is unrealistic. It's a bad habit that starts in the over simplification of opinion polling. It's divisive and harmful to the coalition that supports equal rights. And it's counterproductive because of that.

Yeah, I thought the 14th amendment pretty well covered that.

GravatarHead on up...

Gravatardid I ever tell you about my wedding at the Sydney courthouse?
Moe Szyslak

Nope -- but please do!

It's just a block down the street from my office. I could have attended!

GravatarI think, but could very well be wrong, that Richard Hatch (the first "Survivor"), married his husband at the Sydney courthouse.

GravatarNope -- but please do!

Mrs. Moe and I went up to Sydney to get married-- we have a friend up there (I think you know him and his wife), and we didn't want to make a big deal out of it, just a JP sorta thing. Didn't want to be in town, go up there, they were our witnesses.

So, we called up, Mrs. Moe was insistent on having the one female JP perform the ceremon-- Fran-- do you know her?

GravatarSo, getting ready for the wedding, Mrs. Moe and I each individually called Fran to make arrangements. No big deal, just where, when, and we wanted to read our own vows.

Fran seemed nice enough over the phone, but to each of us she made the odd comment that I-- Moe-- should sign the left side of the marriage application and Mrs. Moe should sign the right side. Whatever, we shrugged it off.

Oh, I need to back up-- Mrs. Moe wouldn't marry me until until gay people had the right to marry-- it was a pretty big issue for her, actually....

GravatarMrs. Moe was insistent on having the one female JP perform the ceremon-- Fran-- do you know her?

Hmmm... don't think so. But it might be one of those things where I know her by sight and not by name.

GravatarUp above, more.

GravatarMrs. Moe wouldn't marry me until until gay people had the right to marry-- it was a pretty big issue for her, actually.

And since then our entire society has crumbled into bitter dust!

But good for her, seriously. It's always cool to hear of people who take principled stands.

GravatarSo I just saw that video of Bolton losing the plot. Hey John, you're in England you dumbshit. They could just as easily tell you to go fuck off and jump into the Thames.

GravatarMrs. Mousse and I were married in Superior Court by a female judge. Still not sure what I signed, but it's stood up for twenty years without any challenges. Courtroom was packed, though the only people we told were my parents, best man, maid of honor and someone who filled in for my wife at her clinic. When word got out the whole clinic shut down for the morning.

GravatarDoesn't prop 8 violate the equal protection clause and state's rights-that is, marriages in other states-which is also unconstitutional?
