For Bill Clinton in 1992, it was the economy, stupid. For John McCain in 2008, it was the stupid economy. Exit polls showed that 62 percent of the electorate said the economy was the most important issue.
But when, precisely, did John McCain lose the narrative on the economy? Was it last July, when economic adviser Phil Gramm, discussing the "mental recession," noted that "we've sort of become a nation of whiners"? Perhaps it was back in December 2007, when McCain said, "The issue of economics is not something I've understood as well as I should." Or was McCain's economic goose cooked long before the campaigns started? Ray Fair, the Yale professor who plugs macroeconomic data into an election-predicting model, said that "since November 2006, the model has consistently been predicting that the Democratic candidate would get about 52 percent of the two-party vote."

A commercial opposing Proposition 8 also drew criticism. In it, two actors portraying Mormon missionaries forced their way into the well-kept home of a married lesbian couple.
"Hi, we're here from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints," one says. "We're here to take away your rights," says his partner.
The missionaries then rip the wedding rings from the women's fingers and ransack their house until they find the women's marriage license, which they destroy.
"Hey, we have rights," one of the women says.
"Not if we can help it," answers the missionary.
The ad was produced by an independent group not affiliated with the official No-on-8 campaign and was shown on MSNBC and Comedy Central, according to Rick Jacobs of the Courage Campaign, a progressive political group.
Jeff Flint, strategist for Yes on 8, called the ad "despicable" and said it "crossed every line of decency."
"I am appalled at the level of Mormon-bashing that went on during the Proposition 8 campaign and continues to this day," he said. "If this activity were directed against any other church, if someone put up a website that targeted Jews or Catholics in a similar fashion for the mere act of participating in a political campaign, it would be widely and rightfully condemned."
Look at how the One has healed the country's divide with his divine presence:
...
Geoffrey, a student at UCLA and regular Rod 2.0 reader, joined the massive protest outside the Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Westwood. Geoffrey was called the n-word at least twice.
It was like being at a klan rally except the klansmen were wearing Abercrombie polos and Birkenstocks. YOU NIGGER, one man shouted at men. If your people want to call me a FAGGOT, I will call you a nigger. Someone else said same thing to me on the next block near the temple...me and my friend were walking, he is also gay but Korean, and a young WeHo clone said after last night the niggers better not come to West Hollywood if they knew what was BEST for them.
...
Three older men accosted my friend and shouted, "Black people did this, I hope you people are happy!" A young lesbian couple with mohawks and Obama buttons joined the shouting and said there were "very disappointed with black people" and "how could we" after the Obama victory. This was stupid for them to single us out because we were carrying those blue NO ON PROP 8 signs! I pointed that out and the one of the older men said it didn't matter because "most black people hated gays" and he was "wrong" to think we had compassion. That was the most insulting thing I had ever heard. I guess he never thought we were gay.
these next 4 years are going to be alot of fun, too bad this fraud is going to ruin the USA.

Gee, isn't it all cozy seeing the Republican-fascists so concerned about my civil rights, not.
Gay marriage isn't going to be the law of the land any time soon, support is going to have to be built among white and black people. It's interesting that as gay people are denied employment and public accommodation protections, that it's a right that the majority of gay men and lesbians don't choose to exercise in Mass. that gets all the attention.
Civil union is marriage by any other name as long as it has the same legal rights and protections included. It's just a word signifying not much. Marriage will come, but not in the near future.
As for the Republican-fascists trying to make hay of the issue, not falling for it. Die, Nazis.

A distinction without a difference, it seems to me. But the denial of fundamental rights simply on the basis of sexual orientation is ridiculous, and it saddens me that one group of people who struggled for so long would deny those rights to another group.

Brooklyn Girl, jury dutied, it's a denial of rights but considering the other rights that are denied to us it's not the key to our survival. As we're not going to have it any time soon, it's a better use of our time to get what we can and to build towards full equality under the law.
Frankly, considering how many straight marriages end in divorce or misery, I'd rather try something a bit different.

Black people and latinos didn't vote all the same way, talking about hundreds of thousands and millions of people as if they formed a cohesive bloc of voters on any issue is unrealistic.
