GravatarI prefer Bach myself. And Handel.

Gravatarone of my fave's is vaclav nelhybel..

his version of 'festivo' comes to mind. being a percussionist and everything probably influences my thinking. not to mention the bloodstream factor going on at 11 pm on a friday night...

GravatarHow about Stan Ridgeway's version of "Personal Jesus"?

GravatarI like the artist Kostabi

GravatarOne of the best thing about Boston is all the music at schools. I would rather hear the New England Conservatory's symphony at Jordan Hall in a year when they are good than the BSO across the street. The BSO has consistancy, but the students are so much more in love with what they are doing when they play it well together. The kids are alright.

GravatarI prefer Bach myself. And Handel.

I prefer to Handel myself like I did Bach in the old days.

GravatarI hear "Mahler", I think of a Woody Allen movie called "Husbands and Wives".

Judy Davis' character in the movie said it was depressing.

Ken Russell's film about him was, well, Russellian. It was pretty interesting. There's a funny parody of Visconti's Death in Venice in the film, too.

GravatarHow about Stan Ridgeway's version of "Personal Jesus"?

Mia Farrow's autobiography affected my opinion of Woody as a person, if not a filmmaker.

But then, I wouldn't let my daughter date Chuck Berry, either.

GravatarYeah, vixy.net is working right now. This is the easiest way I've found to download and transcode youtube video into a format that my portable music player likes. It does this without introducing any video glitches, sound distortion, or video/music sync issues.

(all things that most other format transcoders seem to do sometimes)

The only problem that vixy.net has is that it sometimes gets overloaded with too much traffic, which means if I want the media, I use another more fallible method.

GravatarPlum, 'Segovia Does Bach' is one of my favorite albums of all time.

Because if they sucked less, they could be real musicians, as opposed to having to produce shit for the captive audience that buys so-called "Contemporary Christian" "Music." Check out the South Park eposide where Cartman formed the Christian rock band if you need further clarification--an instant classic.

GravatarThe tower is supposed to be lit up.

Indeed it is. It's not the "We're Number One!" burnt orange lighting, but rather a subdued lighting.

Quick aside - a close relative was on the committee that designed the different lighting schemes for the UT Tower. I guess this was "tribute to famous Texan."

GravatarAnd in re: fundie music: many of the big fundie churches are more or less cults of personality centered around the person of the minister and somewhat around his immediate family members. There's a mega-fundie church here that literally has a gift shop off the main entry; said gift shop is primarily stocked with books written by or tapes recorded by the pastor and/or members of his close family. It's a profit center for the family.

Gravataris the fucker-in-chief going to the funeral? If not, who will be representing this deadly administration?

GravatarI think it was just last week on Big Love that Bill rose to the defense of Lady Bird Johnson. He was in a business negotiation with a guy who owned a billboard company, and Lady Bird apparently ran some kind of campaign against billboards as an eyesore on the nation's highways. This billboard company guy had a dartboard with Lady Bird's face in his office, and Bill protested that one shouldn't malign the First Lady of the United States in such a manner. For some reason, I found that touching.

GravatarThe Iraqis are so annoyingly ungrateful for the education we are providing their kids.

For example:

Nawal Na'eem Karim was surprised this week to hear her toddler tell her, "Talaq inana! Talaq inana!" — "Bullets here! Bullets here!"

He was warning her to step cautiously past the windows. Their house is in a kill zone. At 18 months, her baby already had learned counterinsurgency survival. He still wears a diaper.

GravatarBach used to get fucking ripped before shows. He's forget whole movements. And when he was really hammered he'd sometimes trash his harpsichord.

This may not be true of Bach, but Beethoven used to be a concert pianist occasionally, when the piano was first invented. He liked so much that this was a keyboard instrument that could play differences in volume, that he was known for destroying those delicate early instruments. His music page turner, often had to pull broken strings and piano mechanical bits out of the piano during the performance.

And people thought the Who were doing something new and radical.

She looked pissed when she came out (Craig acted a little silly during his introduction of her, but it wasn't any reason for her to get angry at him), she made some snide remarks about his staff, and she barely mentioned Ratatouille, the film she was supposed to promote.

On the other hand, she got in a few good quips, and she talked about beads.

GravatarRory, how is the new car?

Did you guys get the sedan?
fourlegsgood, gots pitchfork | Homepage | 07.14.07 - 12:38 am | #

Yes, we did. And it is very nice.

I still don't feel comfortable driving a new car. My last two (both totalled--neither time my fault) I bought way used for a few hundred bucks.

So I'm still feeling like I'm in a borrowed or rented car. It's really just too good.

GravatarSo Wu,

I thought I searched.

GravatarOn the other hand, she got in a few good quips, and she talked about beads.
Janeane

i saw that, i didn't think it was a disaster at all that bit on Ferguson. And Ratatouille didn't need the p.r. anyway

GravatarBy conservative estimates, Bear Research Group made more than 1.25 million doses of LSD between 1965 and 1967, essentially seeding the entire modern psychedelic movement.

Whatever research they were supposed to be doing on bears seems to have gotten lost in the shuffle.

GravatarAn Austin City Limits rerun is showing a Pixies concert.

I can't get enough of them. Sad to have missed seeing them live, back in the day.
rorschach, infogit | Homepage | 07.14.07 - 12:30 am | #

No question, Rory. Great version of "Monkey Gone to Heaven" on that Austin City Limits show.
Gilly Gonzylon |

LOVE the pixies. And all is not lost, they've re grouped and recently toured..

GravatarWhat band are you the most glad you got to see?

And: What band do you most regret having missed?

Dead
Duke Ellington

I think I can pretty much guarantee ntodd would hit it.

GravatarThis makes me wonder about the name of a spinoff of Bourns international, "Bear" Medical.

Actually the "bear" supposedly stood for Bourns Electronic Adult Ventilator.

GravatarSpeaking of cats, a new one showed up here about a week ago, and was trying to lick up the scummy remains of water I had dumped out of a flowerpot saucer (to keep mosquitos from breeding) on the back porch. So I went to put out some fresh water, and it ran, then came back after I went in the house and drank. Since then, it won't leave. Or at least it leaves for only a couple of hours at a time, then returns. I wake up in the morning, she's sitting on the back porch, staring at the doors. I go to bed, she's sitting on the back porch, staring at the doors. She doesn't run now, she wants to come in, which of course is not going over well with my kitty, who now will not go out back. Thing is, this cat is well-fed; it belongs to someone nearby, though I don't know who. But it has decided that it wants to move here. I haven't figured out how I'm going to get rid of it, but I'm going to have to, because I want my cat in the back yard, not out front where she'll be tempted to cross the street and probably get run over. So tomorrow I'm going to put up fliers with the visiting kitty's picture, and hope someone calls so I can suggest to them that for some reason, their cat has decided to look for another home, and encourage them to do what's needed to make it happier where it lives.

GravatarI've been drunk during lots of concerts but I was in the audience so it didn't matter.
Mr French

I went to a Sebadoh concert once and there was an incredibly hostile vibe coming from the band. They couldn't have made it any plainer that they had nothing but contempt for the audience, the whole concept of "putting on a show," everything. They sounded terrible, but intentionally so, as if it would have been "uncool" to actually play in a competent and entertaining manner. I found the whole thing so off-putting that I went to the bar, sat with my back to the band, and got absolutely shit-faced and ignored the rest of the show. I figured I'd just treat it like it was the local bar and they were the shitty bar band entertainment. I guess that was my "revenge," not that they could have known about it.

GravatarI still don't feel comfortable driving a new car.

which is why God invented warranties. stomp on that pedal, that Civic can take it. go wild. a new car, man!

oh yeah. And she looked like Kucinich's amazing wife

GravatarFor me:

Most glad to've seen: toss-up between the Dead and the Pogues.

Wish I'd've seen: Jimi.

GravatarPlum P, who loves Al Gore | Homepage | 07.14.07 - 12:41 am | #

I didn't think it was a disaster, not even close. She was essentially herself, take it or leave it, which has its good points and bad ones.

GravatarI think I can pretty much guarantee ntodd would hit it.

dood, he's a big ho he'd hit anything

I'm looking forward to the road trip up to Wisconsin. I reckon that'll break me in to the idea.

GravatarHoly cow.

Maddies eyelashes have grown.

This cat is like a science experiment gone wrong.

i couldn't resist, i'd keep the cat. And yes, i have a cat hat hates other cat. But i couldn't resist. You're a stronger person than i am! I'd get my middle-aged cat a shrink or summat.

GravatarKucinich's amazing wife

I saw some of the pictures of her.
She's proof that Kucinich is more than a hobbit.
She's a hottie to the nth degree.

Gravatar
What band are you the most glad you got to see?

Redd Kross in 1988, Old Ritz, when they were doing about a third of the songs from Jesus Christ Superstar as part of the show.

"This song is about my boyfriend -- Jesus." "

"Uh, Jeff? I think Jesus is everyone's boyfriend."

Far fucking out.

GravatarPatton Oswalt was on Conan last night pimping Ratatouille, and he went on this hilarious riff about he and Janine were mistaken for a lesbian couple at one of their PR stops while doing all kinds of butch dyke mannerisms.

Gravatardood, he's a big ho he'd hit anything
fourlegsgood

funny!

GravatarRedd Kross in 1988, Old Ritz, when they were doing about a third of the songs from Jesus Christ Superstar as part of the show.

Wow. I just don't even have the slightest idea who they are.

Gravatarher 'mere' existence here is so obvious... what's the word??? oh, yeah... gotcha.

Gravatar So tomorrow I'm going to put up fliers with the visiting kitty's picture, and hope someone calls so I can suggest to them that for some reason, their cat has decided to look for another home, and encourage them to do what's needed to make it happier where it lives.

Maybe someone moved and left it?

Gravatarwhich is why God invented warranties. stomp on that pedal, that Civic can take it. go wild. a new car, man!

FUCKIN' A.

Trust us. We got our degrees in Florida. How could we be wrong?

and brain, and dedication, and compassion. And she'd make a lesbian out of moi in a minute!

Never thought of Patton as lesbian material. He's a lipstick one, I guess...

Gravatar
Wow. I just don't even have the slightest idea who they are.

Wow! They shred.

GravatarPlum P - it is a very sweet kitty and has not been aggressive towards my cat at all. But my cat is very skittish. She was here for 6 weeks before she figured out that I wasn't going to kill her, and it took her another year before she would remain in the same room with anyone visiting the house. She's very attached to me but I don't know that she would stay if I took in another cat - and she would not have an easy time finding another home if she ran off, due to being so people-shy. So I kind of figure I owe it to her to keep things calm around here.

GravatarI saw Red Kross in LA once, they were pretty good. I guess I should have liked them more, but soundgarden seemed more real, less LA London.

GravatarWow. I just don't even have the slightest idea who they are.

That's what's amazing about music. No matter how much you think you know a type, someone comes up with a performer that's excellent that you've never heard of.

Well, that's a long story for another time.

But I'm on my 5th car made by Honda Motor Company, and it's pretty hard to kill them.

GravatarI've got a huge crush on Kim Deal.

Just btw.

Gravatarfourlegs - someone is feeding this cat, because it's not hungry. So it has to have some kind of nominal "home" nearby.

I've killed a Hyundai, a Toyota, a Chevy, and a Ford.

Never a Honda, though.

And, to be fair, a couple of those were actually killed by romantic interests and not me personally.

GravatarI am trading in my dead Isuzu for a Chrysler product, as soon as I can scratch together enough Capital to borrow less than 50% of that new car smell from our credit union.

I am getting right on that. we must all pitch in on the battle agaimnst Al Qaeda in Texas and shop for new cars.

GravatarTrust us. We got our degrees in Florida. How could we be wrong?

So many fucking ways 'til Tuesday.

GravatarHenriette has a pimple near her bottom lip. I'm so tempted to squeeze it...

Time out -- please. Don't do that. Unless it gets bigger, leave it alone. If it gets bigger with no sign of getting better, take her to the vet.

Squeezing chin pimples on cats can cause worse infections that can go straight to their hearts, much as with improperly done dental work. Some cats get blackheads on their chins, too, and squeezing those can also cause serious problems

Gravatarwww.thebear.org

Sort of odd that old Owsley was presented as depressed.
He should rejoice in his contribution and know that only assholes think little of him. To people who matter, he ROCKED!

Gravatarnot the andante version of it, either...

GravatarThank you...i really enjoyed the great diversion.

GravatarWhat's with the good taste?

GravatarHmmm, and what's wrong with really popular pieces - people like them, is that it?

I liked doug's 12:11 post though
