This preemptive action taken by the Bush administration on the eve of the ‘Sicko’ premiere in Cannes led our attorneys to fear for the safety of our film, noting that Secretary Paulson may try to claim that the content of the movie was obtained through a violation of the trade embargo that our country has against Cuba and the travel laws that prohibit average citizens of our free country from traveling to Cuba. (The law does not prohibit anyone from exercising their first amendment right of a free press and documentaries are protected works of journalism.)
I was floored when our lawyers told me this. “Are you saying they might actually confiscate our movie?” “Yes,” was the answer. “These days, anything is possible. Even if there is just a 20 percent chance the government would seize our movie before Cannes, does anyone want to take that risk?”
Certainly not. So there we were last week, spiriting a duplicate master negative out of the country just so no one from the government would take it from us. (Seriously, I can’t believe I just typed those words! Did I mention that I’m an American, and this is America and NO ONE should ever have to say they had to do such a thing?) --Michael Moore

But other than being a pimp and a bad manager, did he really do anything wrong (as opposed to not doing enough right) at the World Bank?
I ask because one of the reasons Andrew Young has been supportive of him, is because of Wolfowitz's apparently effective work in Africa. I won't say it's sincere, but it apparently accomplished something positive.
I think a large part of the reaction IS because of the war, and not the girlfriend hypocrisy. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

EkCenTriK: I am curious about the difference between the scooter and the motorcycle? In looking at pricing, it seems to me that for the same money, a motorcycle is just as much a possible. So what would sway a person to a scooter?
Generally, with a scooter, you have no shifting (less distraction), upright seating, and a step-through design. No doubt, motorcycles with similar engine sizes are a LOT cheaper, but they tend to be the crotch-rocket sportbike design, where the riding position is akin to laying on one's belly over the frame of the bike.

Well, he had such a lousy management style that he pissed off a huge number of World Bank employees. He brought in his aides from the Pentagon and used them to run interference on everything. He isolated those managers who disagreed with him. He insisted that money designated for other nations (especially those who wouldn't allow flyover rights for the US military) be poured into Iraq.
The investigation run by the bank's board showed all sorts of problems, so I think Schorr is being either disingenuous or untruthful.

msg00043.html Friday, December 6, 2002 Posted: 2:59 PM EST (1959 GMT) SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota (AP) -- A man who made a remark about a "burning Bush" during the president's March 2001 trip to Sioux Falls was sentenced Friday to 37 months in prison.
Humphreys said he got into a barroom discussion in nearby Watertown with a truck driver. A bartender who overheard the conversation realized the president was to visit Sioux Falls the next day and told police Humphreys talked about a "burning Bush" and the possibility of someone pouring a flammable liquid on Bush and lighting it.
"I said God might speak to the world through a burning Bush," Humphreys testified during his trial. "I had said that before and I thought it was funny."

Media Criticized Over Tenn. Slayings
By DUNCAN MANSFIELD Associated Press Writer
May 18,2007 | KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- In a powerful demonstration of the way the Internet has opened up the mainstream media to intensive second-guessing, bloggers are charging that news outlets have ignored the rape and murder of a young Knoxville couple because of the racial implications of the story.
The two victims were white; the five defendants are black.
The critics include mainstream conservatives, such as the National Review, and white supremacists. They have drawn comparisons to the Duke lacrosse rape case and wondered why the killings of Channon Christian, a 21-year-old University of Tennessee student, and her 23-year-old boyfriend Christopher Newsom are not getting the same attention from what the bloggers regard sneeringly as the liberal media.
"Oh, that's right, the victims were WHITE!" several conservative blogs have observed.

Correct, although the CVT transmission (v-belt-driven, using a dry variator-type clutch) performs quite differently than a manual transmission, so depending on the scooter, it may not have the "hole shot" that a motorcycle will have, off the line. Of course, few practical scooter folx care about that.

That Russert horn-honking thing is the height of stupidity.
An SUV honked its horn at me yesterday, because I had the temerity to cross an intersection in front of it (we have this weird intersection by work where a city street intersects with an access road that merges with a freeway off-ramp about 1/4 block from the city street. Cars on the access road have to yield to cars coming up the ramp, and cars on the city street have a stop sign and have to yield to both. It's a busy intersection, and about the only way to get through it if you're on the city street is to jump through when you see no cars coming up the ramp and the car at the access yield sign is just starting to go.) Apparently, even though I had already waited on some 5 cars coming on the access road and another 5 coming up the ramp, Mr. SUV driver was upset that I was going to get through the intersection before he crossed it, and he honked. Flip! goes my middle finger. He honks again, apparently upset at being flipped off by someone he's being rude to. So I doubled his pleasure by giving him the fingers of both hands.
Someday, someone is going to shoot me while I'm driving.

As such, Bush is now fighting both in the arena of politics and in the arena of history. Having bet his presidency on Iraq, he seems to be planning to leave the war to the next administration, which he no doubt assumes may be Democratic, and then blame it for whatever additional disarray erupts when the United States withdraws.
And here, Bush is more like Nixon than he probably appreciates. Although Nixon had privately given up on the Vietnam War early in his first term, he wanted to label Democrats as "the party of surrender." For Bush, the silver lining in Democrats' new control of Congress is the chance it gives him to shift the blame for disaster or defeat. If the war continues to go badly, the White House is increasingly arguing, it is not because of any misjudgments from Bush or Cheney, Rice or Donald H. Rumsfeld; rather, the problem will be those "cut-and-run" congressional opponents who withheld funding from the troops and fatally demoralized the gallant Iraqis.
Bush's current hope is that history will vindicate him, even if 2008 may not. If he uses LBJ and Nixon as his measuring sticks, however, he will find that history is far more likely to condemn him -- not just for manufacturing reasons to fight an unsuccessful war, and not just for bucking public opinion, but also for failing to think seriously about the past. "Nations and governments have never learned anything from history," Hegel said. Historians like to think that's not true, but there are times when it's hard to believe otherwise.

You liberals were put in a trick bag.
First we (The GOP) got you liberals to distrust the 'punch cards' in Florida in 2000. We knew you liberals would start screaming and sueing for e-voting after that.
And you did.
Check out the archives from the ACLU back in 2001 and 2002. The ACLU filed lawsuits all over the country demanding e-voting. That was our plan. You liberals are so stupid that you fell for it.
So, e-voting machines were put in all over America for the 2004 election. That is what we wanted. WHY?
Because we (The GOP) own the e-voting machines (Diebold). Now you liberals will never win another Presidential election. All we needed was Ohio for 2004. And we made a few program changes from Diebold HQ and 'wham' ... BUSH WON OHIO!
What happened to all of those votes in the Cleveland area? Why didn't the numbers add up?
So thank you liberals for falling for our ploy back in 2000 in Florida.
You liberals got fucked and fucked bad, and there isn't anything you can do about it.

He omits the arena of criminal law. A serious oversight and one which is motivating as many of the administration's decisions as the other two.

I think a large part of the reaction IS because of the war, and not the girlfriend hypocrisy. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
The thing was that Wolfowitz had placed "nepotism" high on his list of World Bank priorities. And that made it almost impossible for the World Bank to maintain credibility with the developing world. After all, what we call "nepotism" in Nigerians is called "personal loyalty" in DC.

NEW YORK (AFP) - Former US vice president Al Gore has added a little fuel to rumors he could run for president in 2008, telling the latest edition of Time magazine due out Friday that he hasn't entirely ruled it out.
But while speculation has been swirling for months that the environmental campaigner could announce a White House bid, he told the magazine that he "fallen out of love with politics" and that he was unlikely to run.
"I haven't ruled it out. But I don't think it's likely to happen," Gore told Time, explaining that he considered the role he was now playing as a global spokesman for awareness on climate change to be an important one."

Not you, and not me, probably.
But there are people in this country who have a different philosophy who deserve to have their views represented by something other than an organized crime family.
In my lifetime there was a place in the Republican party for the likes of Eisenhower, Javits, Dirksen, Weicker, Mathias and countless others, even Goldwater, for whom I'd be personally unlikely to vote, but who were decent people whose views were worthy of consideration. There was a time when the Republican Party stood for balanced budgets, and civil liberties, and personal freedom, and education, and opportunity.

SteveLG,
I disagree. I remember that we used to have a Republican Governor who was a pretty good guy (William Milliken) and a Senator who was decent: Robert Griffin.
I voted for Milliken but never voted for Griffin. But I respected him until about '68 when he went completely over to the dark side of Republicanism. (I think this is about the time when the Republicans truly went evil) He started spouting code words for racism and denigrating other people's positions as being unAmerican and all that claptrap they are still using.
No, the Republicans at this point are beyond redemption. I cannot even conceive of a good republican. They are corrupt and unAmerican.

Well, there's what this number represents, and then there's what the person who implemented the code intended for it to represent. Which are we talking about?
Maybe it's supposed to be the total number of people who have a Haloscan window open that was linked to from Eschaton, regardless of which thread it came from.

I yield to no one in my contempt for Richard Nixon, but if you go back and check some of the programs that were implemented in his administration, there's room for another opinion:
Noam Chomsky has called Nixon, "in many respects the last liberal president."...The political dominance of the liberal consensus, even into the Nixon years, can best be seen in policies such as the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency or in Nixon's (failed) proposal to replace the welfare system with a guaranteed annual income by way of a negative income tax. Affirmative action in its most quota-oriented form was a Nixon administration policy. Even the Nixon "War on Drugs" allocated two-thirds of its funds for treatment, a far higher ratio than was to be the case under any subsequent President, Republican or Democrat. Additionally, Nixon's normalization of diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China and his policy of detente with the Soviet Union were probably more popular with liberals than with his conservative base.

I will answer for 'turk cause Des Moines or wherever in Iowa is just like Muskegon or a thousand other small places: there is NO alternative. If you want to go there, you WILL drive to get there.
I keep saying this but people do not believe me. You can cut your fuel consumption to a certain point and that is it. You still have to go to the store, to work, and so on. With prices this high and a finite amount of money, the amount you spend on fuel is deducted from the amount you can spend on other things.

The fuel increases reach here eventually. We just see it in different ways, e.g., higher food prices (gotta transport it), higher maintenance (to buy oil for the burner), etc. All sorts of things. It adds up, too.

Ga. Republican avoids war in campaign
WASHINGTON - The Republican front-runner in the race to succeed a late Georgia congressman jumps at the chance to talk about immigration or Southern values. Ask him about the war in Iraq, and he clams up.
"Iraq has not been a big thing in our district," Jim Whitehead said recently.
...
Democrats were already criticizing Whitehead's reticence about Iraq before Whitehead told Capitol Impact, a political Web site, that the war was no big deal.
Since then, critics have seized on Whitehead's words as proof that he is out of touch with public opinion. Some note the timing of his comment — while district residents were grieving two soldiers who graduated from the same local high school and died in Iraq.
I can think of several ways for this retard to get some edumacation on the subject.

It's not that, Gummo. Your model is far too simple-minded. It's that the corporate media machine has successfully brainwashed the majority of the American public into thinking that all those things are bad. What they do with their campaign dollars is almost meaningless next to that.

Typical midwestern small city, everything is spread out. I'm within a couple miles from my office so it's not too bad.
Our friends who live in big cities would be surprised at the amount of driving that is necessary to exist outside same, no?

Gas ought to cost about $5-6/gallon just about everywhere. But the profit should not be going to assholes like Dick Cheney. It should be financing the creation of public transportation and a sustainable energy infrastructure.

From Karin's link on passports:
We’ve also talked with two people who paid an additional hefty premium (between $200 and $300) to a “fixer” located next door to the passport office on 19th Street in Washington, D.C. and had their new passports back within 36 hours.

What annoys me, also, is that we've got people writing into the paper saying the high gas prices mean we should drill in Alaska.
1) Refinery capacity is (accidentally on purpose) way down.
2) The oil would likely be sold to Asia where there's a better profit.
Drilling in Alaska--land belonging to We the People mind you--would just mean even more massive profits for oil companies. In fact, the cost of the exporation and drilling will be passed onto us.
I am living in a land of morons.

Check out what some idiot Brownback supporter wrote yesterday.
If you ask me, that settles the question right there. I support the Bible, and I don’t want my children learning about Heliocentrism in school. I think this doctrine encourages atheism, Darwinism, and anti-Americanism. I don’t want my tax dollars going to finance this kind of false science. It’s complete rot, and I hope that those of us who come to realize this can ultimately prevail against its propogation amongst OUR children with the money from OUR salaries.
I can’t wait to hear from the moonbats and the Darwinists and the other rubes on this one, though. Go on, witch doctors. Preach to me how the planet hurtles through the ether, Scriptural and physical evidence to the contrary! Your false doctrines will be cast down on the day when America rediscovers its Christian roots. That is a promise.
It goes on and on like that. It has to be seen to be believed.
