Gravatarbut if everyone has that then you don't have the nice walkable urban neighborhood.

not sure i agree with that. chicago is a "city of neighborhoods" and while it'd be silly to walk from say Hyde Park to Rogers Park, one could do it, and go along the way passing housing and commerce and more housing and more commerce.

my point is that with some changes in zoning laws, we can achieve a balance of "some house, some yard, and near by shops and stuff you need, within reasonable walking distances."

GravatarAs I mentioned below, I heard on TV that Rep. Nita Lowey took herself out of consideration for Hillary's Senate seat.

People have terrace gardens here, and there are some community gardens, too. And, being an older city, the parks have mature trees. I'm also two blocks from the East River, where they are building the Brooklyn Bridge Park.

The bottom line is that, with decent urban planning, cities can provide a good quality of life for a lot of people.

GravatarDumbya's hard-on for the military is unseemly considering how many of them he's sent to hell-holes to be killed and maimed and emotionally shattered.

GravatarI grew up in Jackson Heights,a outer-borough neighborhood in New York City.  Many of the row houses there, built in the 1930s, located the garages in the rear, accessed by a common driveway running down the back of the houses.  The disadvantage is that the back yards were smaller, but it made the streetscape much more pleasant.

What I see now is that people are paving over their small front gardens in order to make an additional parking place - a truly ugly trend that I wish the city would ban, but that is probably impossible politically.

GravatarThe DC rowhouses in the image posted by Atrios were probably built ca. 1880s before the appearance of the automobile.
In Philly starting about 1910 rowhouses (porch houses were most popular) had a common driveway for cars in the center of the block accessible from 4 sidewalk cuts. Three storey houses had a garage built in the back at ground level. Two storey house had a seperate garage instead of backyard.
The result retained 'onstreet' parking, no garage doors on the sidewalk and a fully pedestrian friendly appearance. A commercial street was usually located within walking distance. It worked very well

When households evolved to 3 and 4 cars per household the whole thing got cluttered.

Buttle flipped out, jumped the fence, and started humping the poodle. The poodle's owner started screaming for Buttle's owner to get the dog off her poodle.

The man walked up to the dog, lifted up its tail and jammed his thumb up the dog's ass. The dog immediately backed off the poodle and started whimpering.

The man said, "Yep. Old Buttle can dish it out, but he can't take it."

GravatarTrue fact: I live in Brownstone brooklyn--rows and rows of turn of the century brownstones, all without driveways and all less than a 10 minute walk from one of several subway lines. People are paying millions for these things, because of their density, proximity to transport and stores, and because they love them.

Got the appraisal of our house, and the appraiser noted in passing that it didn't conform with zoning requirements because it lacked parking! Yes, in New York City!

So, if anyone else wanted to create a neighborhood like mine, it couldn't be done. In spite of the fact that people are willing to pay $800-$1,200 a square foot to buy here.

Insanity.

taxation of autos in dense cities seems the answer. breaks for those who own minicars and scooters, heavy taxes on those who own SUV sized monstrosities. taxes on all cars coming into the dense areas, like they're doing in london. use the revenue to build greenspaces and ecoprojects that beautify and save money, like greenroofs.

It's a little like an argument I had the other day with a liberal who took the position that WalMart needs to remodel its stores because they cause people to be stampeded. Did anyone see a clip of that Long Island mob? You will never see such a sight in rural America. And if you do, it's time for me to go to Canada.

Call me racist, I don't care. A fact's a fact, however much you avoid or deny it.

GravatarSoho which is now a dreary landscape of chain "luxury" stores, third rate super expensive restaurants, and "art" galleries used to have machine tool companies and actual artists studios before it was "developed" into a repulsive outdoor mall.

GravatarWell, it happens every time. simels and the little group of fuckups have taken over the thread. And in front of 59 visitors too.

GravatarCD, I suspect it will depend on whether or not the Big Guys regard us as actual workers.

Gravatar"Gonna be some sad little pups howling in their new homes tonight. It was a great litter to watch grow up."

We all lasted exactly ONE night of puppy howls. I put the big monster in the bed with me and woke up when he whined to go out. Instant house training and it wasn't much different than having a human baby.
He still sleeps up there at 110 pounds, but then again when it is 20 degrees outside that is rather nice.

Gravatar"The title for this post is What People Want."

i want a place where i have to put iron bars on ground floor windows so i can be within walking distance to all those hip urban thingies.

Gravatarthere isn't just "one" Brooklyn- it contains multitudes, and various constantly evolving neighborhoods, many of which are kewler and hipper than Manhattan : )

you all prolly can tell what my problem is: all my friends in the city are gaii. and when i go i go with other gaii friends who want to be where all the gaii people are. flatlander that i am, i can hardly convince them that the nightlife outside of manhattan is "worthwhile," for all i'm sure it could be. some of my friends are terrible fashionistas and at times that really annoys me.

GravatarCall me racist, I don't care. A fact's a fact, however much you avoid or deny it.

You know, shithead, that "urban" does not mean "negro" except in fucked up pea brains like yours.

GravatarWhat do new puppy people do for an alarm clock in the puppy's bed these days?

JimParkey, sock puppet a la pud or not. You decide.

Now I am out. Really.

Gravatar"Did anyone see a clip of that Long Island mob? You will never see such a sight in rural America. And if you do, it's time for me to go to Canada."

Guess you weren't in Greensburg Indiana (rural as all get out honey) when they had a similar stampede. Only one person was knocked down and got out of the way. It was a fucking MESS of white people screaming, pushing, shoving, and acting like crazed animals.
Guess you should be getting the Uhaul ready for Canada, eh?

GravatarThe most annoying aspect of the Buttle is the unfulfilled promises to leave.

GravatarThe problem with JimParkey is that he has a brain the size of a Le Sueur pea.

GravatarThe little group of fuckups just can't help themselves. See you later Atroits.

This is indeed a dissapointment.

OK, yes, and yes.

Gravatarwouldn't it be nice if the redstate fucks stopped getting welfare?

Gravatar"What do new puppy people do for an alarm clock in the puppy's bed these days?"

That didn't work for us with any of the puppies. The only thing that did work was having them close to us at night. Most of them did graduate to sleeping on dog beds, but the biggest dog never did. Thankfully we have a king sized bed...

GravatarWas that Gary Ruppert's hillbilly cousin?

GravatarCan't you just build alleys like we have in Chicago? I think we strike a nice balance here between the transit and car culture ... just about everyone has the space for a garage behind the house, but transit is everywhere and most neighborhoods are highly walkable.

GravatarThis thread is going to the dogs.

GravatarYou know, the crowd at that Wal Mart was fucked up.

Being fucked up is not a function of the hue of your skin.

all my babies use the safety collars, and i heartily endorse them. i dunno if they make them for dogs, but already they've saved much grief from "mommy, i'm stuck!" moments in mischief. pop right off in a single tug, they do.

GravatarYeah Plantsman, I can understand. But it is tough to go when you have one more comment to react to. It’s like at the bar, you say this is the last one and I am out of here. You mean it but just as you finish it someone says a different interesting thing. You say again, this is the last one. And there you are. It is not always so easy to leave when you said you would.

GravatarOh, the WWF spot. Sharon Lawrence's delivery puts me off.

GravatarPoor pup.

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. — A border collie weighing more than 120 pounds survived being frozen to a sidewalk because he was insulated by layers of fat.

The Sheboygan County Humane Society says the "morbidly obese" dog froze to the sidewalk when he was left out overnight Wednesday in single-digit temperatures. Shelter manager Carey Payne says few dogs could survive that.

Sheboygan Police Lt. Tim Eirich says Jiffy's 59-year-old owner was arrested Thursday morning on suspicion of animal neglect. She told police she tried to get the dog inside but couldn't, and instead checked on it every few hours.

Payne says shelter workers had to pour warm water over Jiffy's back end to unstick him from the sidewalk. She says it's too soon to say whether the elderly animal suffered any long-term effects.

Violently displacing people from their social unit, removing the role models, causes violent and anti-social behavior.

Here's how we can tell. If at the first post most of the little group quote him and fight him then yes he may be a sock puppet of theirs.

Now, if after the little group all go postal on his ass, he doesn't fight back, like I and some other real people do, then yes, you know for sure that this is just another in a long line of troll sock puppets invented by simels and his little crew.

Well, it's morning out here on the left coast, so sue me.

GravatarOf course it's not all right if a criminal is white. There exists an underclass in this country - populated heavily by african americans. There also exists a lower class of all races which have, at their root, a lack of supportive healthy family structure. This acts as a drag in all society. It's like having two roommates - one an ivy leaguer and the other a heroin addict. The two pull on each other, but the latter more violently.

Social culture in this country has been more or less on the decline since WWII, IMO.

"He not only must oversee the construction of a presidential library and begin writing his memoirs, but he also must grapple with salvaging a legacy mired in the lowest presidential approval ratings in history."

Oh, the horror. The horror.

GravatarI saw a documentary the other night. It was about juvenile elaphants in South Africa who were violently killing Rhinos. The keepers of the reserve couldn't understand this unusual, abhorant behavior never seen before. The elephants in question had been removed from elephant herds to the north as young animals and place more or less randomly into the reserve. The keepers decided to take elder male elephants and put them into the reserve. The effect was to restore some familial structure and the killing stopped.

Now, if this happens with elephants, surely it would apply, even stronger, with humans (of any "race").

Think about it.

Gravatar"American social culture is on the decline because capitalism is out of control.

White man's capitalism."

Social culture was doing just fine under "white man's capitalism" as you put it, for many many years.

Post WWII liberalism, as usher in by the federal judiciary, has more to do with the decline in social culture than anything.

But judging by the tone of your post, I suspect you would consider something like declining rates of teenage premarital sex evidence of declining social culture promulgated by 'the Man'.

GravatarI'd like to write W's memoirs:

I was inserting a firecracker into the anus of a frog when these voices in my head started talking about being president and don't watch mommy and poppy fuck no more.

GravatarWorst Drivers in The World

I think that's slightly overblown. Once you learn how to drive there it works okay. My main problem driving in Boston is getting lost, not dealing with the drivers. IMHO the drivers in Haverhill and Salem are much worse, the saving grace being there aren't as many of them. If Haverhill were the size of Boston, it would truly suck.

GravatarOf course, I freaked out when them gray guys walked into the room and told about the future on August 1st, 2001.

I had only one thing to say to them, "Whose your Daddy?"

They reminded of frogs.

GravatarI'm alway forgetting me.

GravatarOf course when they did it when they said they were going to do it, I was dismayed. So few folks, including me, keep their word. But they did it.

GravatarPeople in Manhattan traditionally summered in the country (what is now the suburbs) or had weekend country houses. I remember that in the late forties and early fifties our grandmother used to rent one for her daughters and their husbands and children to share on Long Island or Connecticut for not too much money.

There is no reason summer housing has to be like the Hamptons. In Scandinavia moderate income people still have modest summer houses, I understand.

Community gardens and community garages also contribute mightily to civilized urban living. In Germany they are currently very widespread.

I also think one car per family/household is a sensible goal that is not incompatible with urban life.

GravatarI want a tree hut, with a guest hut for Gisele Bundschen.

GravatarIt's called an alley in the back and an avenue in the the front. In a quiet neighborhood, an avenue is a mini park and the alley keeps the cars off the streets.

GravatarI love Duncan, and agree with his general outlook on planning, but dude, most people, until the end of time, will want/need cars.

Meaning, even of they live in a nice self-contained urban setting, they need a spot for their car. They may want to live in "Manhattan", but also may have to work in the burbs.

Or they just want an effin car.

You're right on parking lots, I agree.

Gravatar"What I see now is that people are paving over their small front gardens in order to make an additional parking place - a truly ugly trend that I wish the city would ban, but that is probably impossible politically."

This is likely illegal as it blocks drainage and leads to street flooding. Here in SF though the city is having trouble keeping up with the pavers, but they are fined and required to remove the concrete.

Think cohousing, applied to urban spaces. Vehicles park at the perimeter, clustered neighborhood in the middle. There's gotta be a way to make this work out so that one gets the deeded car-stash plus the real urban neighborhood feel. Underground garages with some thought put in to traffic flow? Something else? This can be done.

GravatarDepends how you do it. parking can happen off alleys, or be on a basement level. Parking multiple cars on site, within the structure, can make i possible to support still greater residential density.

It's also generally underestimated just how much residential density is needed to support even small scale and simple retail stores.
