I grew up in Southern Ohio (Athens) and live in Northern Ohio now (Eastlake). I couldn't agree more that there is a huge difference between the two. Much of it goes way, way, back to the early settlement of the state. Northern Ohio was settled by the Connecticut Land Company who called the area the Western Reserve (hence Case Western Reserve University) while the Southern parts of the state was settled by Virginians who brought their southern ways with them.

The tension between Northern Ohio and Southern Ohio was probably best exhibited during the Civil War when southern sympathizers in the counties (called "Copperheads") personified by such colorful figures like Clement Valandingham battled with the pro-abolitionists in the North. Valandingham wound up getting tossed in prison for the duration of the war.

You can see the signs of the division today. What other state can you think of that will send a complete conservative ho-bag like Jean Schmidt to congress at the same time that is sends progressives like Dennis Kucinich, Sherrod Brown and Stephanie Tubbs-Jones?

Gravatareven when young, i found the daily pledge a little creepy and authoritarian. proving your patriotism is something you do, demonstrate with your actions- saying the words proves nothing, as today's republicans so clearly demonstrate.

and i'm not really sure what value there is teaching kids to recite a pledge that can't possibly mean anything to them when they're young. but in my elementary school, everyone had to, even the kindergarteners.

GravatarI have a PhD. This means the only exams I need ever take, for the rest of my life involve either driving or blood.

GravatarFrom the local paper:

History of allegiance
The Pledge of Allegiance has a long history that includes multiple changes, school-house traditions and state laws:

In 1892, the Pledge of Allegiance was written for the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America: "I pledge allegiance to my flag, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

In 1923, the words "my flag" were replaced by "the flag of the United States" because leaders thought some foreign-born people might perceive the "flag" mentioned in the pledge to be the flag of their home country. A year later, the words "of America" were added after "United States."

In 1945, the Pledge of Allegiance was adopted as the pledge's official name.

In 1954, Congress passed a law adding the words "under God" after "one nation."

Fellow student at Cal State Hayward thought academia could be improved by adding the rank of Wizard. To become a Wizard, one attained Doctorates in all available fields of study. The Wizardry conferring ceremony involved the Wizard coming out on stage wearing all the robes, stoles and bonnets for the degrees they had attained. Then to the stains of "The Stripper" the awardee peels them off one by one, after which every instructor he/she ever took a class from has to come has to kiss the awardee's bare ass.

GravatarMore news from Boulder High:

It's no official holiday, but a number of students at Boulder High School will be celebrating "Free Mason" day today. Mason Lacy, a 17-year-old senior and the impromptu holiday's namesake, will not be in attendance.... for his five-day suspension from school for attempting to streak naked across the football field during the annual Boulder High-Fairview game last week.

Lacy received a ticket for indecent exposure Sept. 20 after he attempted to sprint across the field wearing only racing flats and some purple body paint. His plan was foiled by security guards, who caught him hopping over the field's fence and held him until police arrived.

"I didn't think anyone would be able to catch me, or want to grab onto a naked person," Lacy said. "They proved me wrong." ...Lacy was told that he may have to register as a sex offender.

My problem with many atheists today is that they are superstitious. If you really believe "God" is a fictitious construct that represents human beings hopes and fears, then most religious doctrine should become pretty inoffensive.

The people who really have justification for militant hatred of religion are people who grew up in religious communities or with abusive religious caretakers.

I don't think atheism is a religion, but it's interesting to read Thom Paine and the deists of the late 1700s who were convinced that they could reshape religion to mean what they wanted it to mean. And throughout history, religion has been used as justification for liberation as well as enslavement. I think it's unfortunate to assume that religion has to mean what the Dobsons of the world want it to mean and not what the Archbishop Romeros and Bishop Tutus and Reverend Kings wanted it to mean.

GravatarIf you really believe "God" is a fictitious construct that represents human beings hopes and fears, then most religious doctrine should become pretty inoffensive.

I have no problem with religious doctrine.

My problem is with people attempting to shove those religious doctrines down my throat.

GravatarThe odd thing is, however that there is a historical precedent for at least part of the Southern half of the state of Ohio to have a strong progressive streak. Unfortunately I think it died when the mines gave out. The UMW fought like hell for the rights of workers back in the 20's and 30's but today's youth seems to have completely forgotten about that. I guess they'd be just as happy playing Nintendo than they would actually standing up for themselves.

couldn't disagree more. and i spent 8 years in a doctoral program divinity school, so i feel pretty qualified in both my atheism, and my disgust with most organized religions and their doctrines. religion has been a great force for evil throughout history (not that it's never done good, there are some bright spots).

Every doctrine has been a great force for evil in human history. I don't disagree with you about organized religions though. All human institutions seem to eventually be about mystification and dominance.

So consider the profoundly secular ideology of the neo-cons or the "free market" economists - to me, these are as or maybe even more revolting as Dobson's Manson Family Focus and certainly more dangerous than the jehova witness's who knock on my door now and then.

Gravatarrootless, there are just so many things that offend my modern mind about supernatural belief. belief that posits that women are inferior, that innocent nonbelievers and the unbaptized are damned for all eternity, that only some men, from some families, may be spokemen for the divine, etc.

i don't disagree with you about other ideologies being equally evil in terms of impact. but i am hard pressed to think of a competitor to organized religion and much doctrine, when it comes to keeping people oppressed, ignorant, afraid, and worst of all, willing to go to war to kill people who believe a different way. it's just madness.

GravatarCD:
I'm not a believer, let alone a member of any organized religion, but much of what is in religious doctrine is essentially poetry and philosophy. And religion is part of our history and culture. So one can, for example, react to MLKs Baptist soaked rhetoric by noting the unlikely nature of the stories or the sexist nature of the doctrine, or one can see that the story of Moses and flight from egypt is a powerful iconic image of slavery and freedom ...
I think you need to be able to do both.

GravatarHaving been born in Fresno and grown up there, I'd like to state, in no uncertain terms, that no one is to ever mention the racist fucks that live there, the depressing rundown sameness of the architecture, nor the fact that it gets hot in the summer and foggy as shit in the winter.

GravatarThere is a scene in Mel Gibson's Apocalypto where the priest presiding over the grotesque sacrifice of thousands of innocents turns to the king and smirks. They know the eclipse was due and they know how it would turn out.

Work the rubes to maintain the power of the elite. That's religion. Predicting the eclipse is science. Not a problem if there are enough home schooled creationist cretins.

So the story is that Jack Newfield and Pete Hamill were at a bar and decide that they will each write down in order the list of the three worst people in history and compare lists. Of course the lists are identical:
Hitler
Stalin
Walter O'Malley.

GravatarOK. Tonight it was broiled boneless rib eye with a herb/garlic butter sauce melted over it as it came out of the broiler. Side of mashed potatoes/broccoli and roasted garlic, fried portobello mushroom caps in breadcrumbs, smothered with sauted stems, red peppers, shallots and fresh herbs. Dessert: fresh purple plum compote with a crisp brown sugar, oatmeal, butter topping.

Shiraz for wine.

http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS...ater/ index.html

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Private military contractor Blackwater USA "delayed and impeded" a congressional probe into the 2004 killings of four of its employees in Falluja, Iraq, the House Oversight Committee said Thursday in a report.
SNIP
The company stalled the committee's investigation into the incident by "erroneously claiming" documents related to the incident were classified, trying to get the Defense Department to make previously unclassified documents classified and "asserting questionable legal privileges," according to a report from the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee's Democratic staff.

According to Blackwater's reports on the killings, the men killed in Falluja had been sent into the area without proper crew, equipment or even maps.

One company document found a "complete lack of support" for its Baghdad, Iraq, office from executives at the company's headquarters in North Carolina, the committee report states.

Well, that's the kind of management any general would want on his side, right?

GravatarWho the fuck buys pre-formed hamburger meat?

We've bought those six pound bags of patties a few times over the year for "big" barbeques (in our case, "big" means about a dozen people or so.)

Generally, the meat is pretty fatty though... though I see out here in Cally-four-nye-a, you can get a six-pound bag of patties made from ground round from Harris Ranch.

Gravatarfunny you should ask, stunt woman. i just fed the newphew a burger that was a preformed patty.

i too was skeptical about this sort of food before i started having to feed him. there are times you really do need the added ease of pre-formed food. sometimes you literally don't have the time, sometimes the lil bugger is running you around in circles and you can barely get the cooking done, and sometimes little kids can be downright obsessed with food that "looks funny."

i'm glad there's more and more organic food for kids these days, i was never a big fan of feeding him preformed and packaged food that is laden with "preservatives" and artificial crap.

GravatarWho the fuck buys pre-formed hamburger meat?

The hamburger forms itself. It's right next to the hamcreas in the schmoo.

GravatarWell, maybe not this general--sort of:

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Security contractors in Iraq use some over-the-top tactics and overreact at times, a top U.S. general in Iraq said Friday.

Many in Iraq have witnessed security contractors operating in a questionable fashion, said U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Joseph Anderson, chief of staff for the Multi-National Corps in Iraq.

"I can certainly say I've seen them do some tactics that I thought were over the top. But that's something we've got to keep working out," Anderson said in a briefing to Pentagon reporters via teleconference from Iraq.

GravatarIn further actions taken on the hearts-and-minds front:

A US air raid early today killed at least 10 people, including women and children, in a building in a mainly Sunni area of Baghdad, Iraqi officials said.

The raid targeted a building in the Al-Saha neighbourhood in southwestern Baghdad where families were sleeping, the Iraqi officials said.
SNIP
"Ten people were killed and seven wounded when American helicopters attacked Building No 139 at 2am. We have no idea of the reason for the attack," said an Interior Ministry official.

An official at Baghdad's Al-Yarmuk hospital said 13 people - seven men, two women and four children - were killed and 10 men and a women were wounded. He said all the casualties were civilians.

GravatarYou computer geeks might find this interesting:

...It seems there could be a blossoming consumer market for very low-cost computers next year, and with hardware prices so low, they almost all run a version of Linux. So after long years of crying in the wilderness and wailing and nashing of teeth there is finally a realistic chance Linux on the desktop is going to take off. Previously Microsoft could "hide" the cost of its operating system within the greater cost of the hardware. As hardware prices have come down they just can’t do that anymore.

If you just paid $250 for a shiny basic laptop, how much would you pay extra for the software to do basic things like surf the web? Not much I suspect...

I used to buy whole ribeyes cryovac-packed at Costco. It was pretty good and very economical. Of course, I think what you're talking about is a bit different.

GravatarHersh: The Surge means basically that, in some way, the president has accepted ethnic cleansing, whether he's talking about it or not. When he first announced the Surge in January, he described it as a way to bring the parties together. He's not saying that any more. I think he now understands that ethnic cleansing is what is going to happen. You're going to have a Kurdistan. You're going to have a Sunni area that we're going to have to support forever. And you're going to have the Shiites in the South.
