Snorkeling Teen Finds Shark Tooth
David Wentz was snorkeling off Marysville Beach in the St. Clair River last August when what he thought was an odd-looking rock caught his eye. "I didn't know what to think," the 16-year-old Port Huron resident said. His father, Craig, said he knew right away what it was due to hours of watching the Discovery Channel.
"It's a shark tooth," Craig Wentz said. "It's petrified. It's rock." Michigan State University paleontologist Michael Gottfried told the Times Herald of Port Huron that the 3-inch long tooth comes from an extinct species called Carcharodon megalodon, or the "megatooth" shark.
The megalodon, which went extinct 2 million years ago, was larger than any building in Port Huron, reaching lengths of more than 60 feet. By comparison, Great White sharks generally are about 20 feet long. The megatooth shark ate about 1,500 pounds of food a day, mostly feeding on whales and other large marine creatures.
Gottfried doesn't think the tooth is from a shark that may have been in the Great Lakes region during two different prehistoric eras, dating back from a half-million years to 300 to 400 million years ago, when it was a "shallow marine environment" filled with sharks, whales and other aquatic life.
"I suspect that it was probably carried and dropped by a human inhabitant of the region, either in recent historical times, or perhaps by earlier native people in this area," he said.
"I can't say just how it came to be in the St. Clair River, but I can assure you that there aren't any sharks with 3-inch teeth living there now."

Sinfonian live blogged it all.
It was great, except for the part where he wore out and gave up during the econ segment.
During his speech last night at George Washington University, Karl Rove was interrupted by a group of protesters who unfurled a banner reading “War Criminal.” The protesters were heckled by some in the audience. A couple of Rove supporters shouted “tase them” to the protesters.
Later on, a student asked Rove why some of his detractors believe he is a “fundamentally bad human being.” Rove joked, “First of all, the tail and the horns are retractable.” “I don’t know! I’m a myth,” Rove explained. “I mean, I’m like Grendel of Beowulf; I’m not often seen but people talk about me a lot. I don’t know.”
Another student asked Rove whether he would still support the Iraq war if he knew then what he knows now. “It is what it is,” Rove said, showing no remorse for his involvement in leading the nation into Iraq.
But no one said "fuck," so the media can still line up to marry McCain with dignity.

This is from the Sadrist site nahraine.net in its entirety. exactly as posted on their site.....
They are saying that the Mahdi army have won in Basrah. That the fact that Maliki had to extend his deadline and now also is offering money to fighters who turn in their arms indicates this. That the Mahdi Army was able to hold on to territory and that the prevented the arrival of most GZG reinforcements from Baghdad, Mosul, Karbala, and Kut. They say American troops (snipers) are directly involved in the fighting.
This is looking very bad. Americans are being drawn into this and then the cover of the Iraqi govt will be blown. What happens then? God knows.

Google made an environmental gesture today by turning the lights out on the U.S. version of its search page. The black background doesn't save energy, but it's Google's way of observing Earth Hour. The global event, created by the World Wildlife Fund, encourages people around the world to turn off their lights at 8 p.m. (your own local time) tonight, March 29, for an hour.
So it was an empty gesture?

The three siblings of a girl who died of diabetes that went untreated as her parents prayed instead of taking her to a doctor have been removed from the home during an investigation, police said Friday.
The parents and social services experts agreed the move would be best for everyone, Everest Metro Police Chief Dan Vergin said. The children are staying with other relatives, though they were not in danger, he said.
There is no physical evidence of abuse or neglect," he said.
Madeline Neumann, 11, died Sunday the Weston home of an undiagnosed but treatable form of diabetes as her parents, Dale and Leilani Neumann, prayed for her to get better. Her mother said she never expected her daughter, whom she called Kara, to die.
The family believes in the Bible, which says healing comes from God, Leilani Neumann said.
The children removed from the home range in age from 13 to 16 and are expected to return to their parents once an investigation of the girl's death wraps up, Vergin said.
He would not specify where they are living, other than with another family member.
Vergin said his agency's final report will make no recommendations on possible charges against the parents, leaving that up to the district attorney.
"There is no intent. They didn't want their child to die. They thought what they were doing was the right thing," he said. "They believed up to the time she stopped breathing she was going to get better. They just thought it was a spiritual attack. They believed if they prayed enough she would get through it."

By JOHN MORENO GONZALES, Associated Press Writer 2 hours, 34 minutes ago
NEW ORLEANS - Imagine that your home was reduced to mold-covered wood framing by Hurricane Katrina. Desperate for money to rebuild, you engage in a frustrating bureaucratic process, and after months of living in a government provided-trailer that gives off formaldehyde fumes you finally win a federal grant.
Then a collector announces that you have to pay back thousands of dollars.
Thousands of Katrina victims may be in the same boat.
A private contractor under investigation for the compensation it received to run the Road Home grant program for Katrina victims says that in the rush to deliver aid to homeowners in need some people got too much. Now it wants to hire a separate company to collect millions in grant overpayments.
The contractor, ICF International of Fairfax, Va., revealed the extent of the overpayments when it issued a March 11 request for bids from companies willing to handle "approximately 1,000 to 5,000 cases that will necessitate collection effort."
The bid invitation said: "The average amount to be collected is estimated to be approximately $35,000, but in some cases may be as high as $100,000 to $150,000."
The biggest grant amount allowed by the Road Home program is $150,000, so ICF believes it paid some recipients the maximum when they should not have received a penny. If ICF's highest estimate of 5,000 collection cases — overpaid by an average of $35,000 — proves to be true, that means applicants will have to pay back a total of $175 million.
One-third of qualified applicants for Road Home help had yet to receive any rebuilding check as of this past week. The program, which has come to symbolize the lurching Katrina recovery effort, has $11 billion in federal funds.

From the UPI: WESTON, Wis., March 29 (UPI) -- A Wisconsin couple, whose 11-year-old daughter died in a diabetic coma after they refused to take her to the doctor, may face criminal charges, police said.
Madeline Kara Neumann of Weston, who had treatable type 1 diabetes, was 5 years old the last time her parents Dale and Leilani took her to a doctor, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Friday.
"She could have easily been treated and had a long, loving life here on Earth," Everest Metro Police Chief Dan Vergin told the newspaper.
The girl's grandmother, Evalani Gordon, said she tried to convince Leilani Neumann to get the girl treatment, an official document says.
"Leilani Neumann told Evalani Gordon that Madeline would be fine and God would heal her," the document says.
Vergin said the investigation will probably end next week and the Marathon County district attorney will decide whether charges will be filed in the girl's Easter Sunday death.
