In a span of 24 hours, Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney each fell victim to what can be called the Republicans' "God Trap." That is, running as "men of faith" to lead what many of its own members call "God's Own Party," Giuliani and Romney are being called on it. And while Rudy's Catholicism and Mitt's Mormonism are now rightly drawing the attention each invited, the second tier Republican candidates are waging a holy war on each other.

If we use tractors to grow and harvest corn to turn into fuel, we'll be free!
Until we realize we're using fuel to create fuel, and that simply doesn't work. The dilemma is in the fuel-dependent economy. Sooner or later (set pollution/global warming aside, which are bigger problems, actually), you run out of fuel. Especially if you are using fuel to replace animal/human labor.
It's basically an unsustainable system, because it pushes the consumption beyond a point of replacement. Or something. Anyway, we'll just use fossil fuel fertilizer and fossil fuels to grow corn for energy! Hey, presto!

The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster
The Eight "I'd Really Rather You Didn'ts"
I'd really rather you didn't act like a sanctimonious holier-than-thou ass when describing my noodly goodness. If some people don't believe in me, that's okay. Really, I'm not that vain. Besides, this isn't about them so don't change the subject.
I'd really rather you didn't use my existence as a means to oppress, subjugate, punish, eviscerate, and/or, you know, be mean to others. I don't require sacrifices, and purity is for drinking water, not people.
I'd really rather you didn't judge people for the way they look, or how they dress, or the way they talk, or, well, just play nice, Okay? Oh, and get this into your thick heads: woman = person. man = person. Samey = Samey. One is not better than the other, unless we're talking about fashion and I'm sorry, but I gave that to women and some guys who know the difference between teal and fuchsia.
I'd really rather you didn't indulge in conduct that offends yourself, or your willing, consenting partner of legal age AND mental maturity. As for anyone who might object, I think the expression is go f*** yourself, unless they find that offensive in which case they can turn off the TV for once and go for a walk for a change.
We mean living ones.

That person mentions hiring illegal workers, but that's the only reference I've seen.
Only one of the miners has been identified. Mexico's consul in Salt Lake City, Salvador Jimenez, said three of the men are Mexican citizens.
...
Relatives of the miners waited for news at a nearby senior center. Many of the family members don't speak English, so Huntington Mayor Hilary Gordon hugged them, put her hands over her heart and then clasped them together to let them know she was praying for them, she said.
----
No mention of their actual legal status in the story. They may or may not be illegal workers.

*Nuclear attacks with Iranian or Pakistani nukes.
*Dirty Bombs like Litivenko's murder by Putin only scaled up to say, a basketball arena or subway.
*Flying planes not into buildings but football stadiums.
We are looking realistically at around 20,000 dead on the low end to around 2-4 million on the high end depending on the means and methods used to attack

A dirty-bomb scare triggered a huge police response last night, with NYPD choppers, boats and special trucks searching the city for radioactive devices even as police brass assured New Yorkers the threat was not verified.
Browne stressed the terror threat, picked up on a Jerusalem-based, English-language Web site with links to Israeli intelligence, was uncorroborated. He said the city's alert status remained at "orange" or high - one step below the highest level of "red" or severe.
But the response was significant. Officials said the alert was for a 50-mile radius around New York.
The threat was picked up on www.debka.com, which posts commentary and analysis on terrorism, intelligence, security, and military and political affairs in the Middle East. The site is known to have solid links to the Israeli intelligence and military communities, but only a so-so record on accuracy.
Debka monitors picked up a rush of suspected Al Qaeda chatter Thursday, the site said. One communication accused Americans of the "grave error" of failing to take seriously the videotape released by American Al Qaeda spokesman Adam Gadahn last week.

I think we have to know what we stand for as a party before we can brand a message. If our representatives are too skeered by the brainwashing the ratwing has done to take a fucking position, it's hard to boil it down in such a way as to communicate it effectively.
I don't think people are averse to thinking, but I do think we have to make it a lot more cogent, and not be having 19-point plans for everything as a way to explain our position.

I wonder why the former seems to appeal more to our Euro friends, and the latter appeals more to our fellow Americans? Is it a "we got ours attitude"?
Well, to start with, Europeans aren't all exactly perfectly high-minded and prejudice-free, but they understand their own interests. I think this is largely because their system of political campaigning is largely regulated in such a way as not to give a massive advantage to those entities with the most money. They also have a much better system of primary and secondary education.
Beyond that, I'd say that the constant close proximity of different cultures as well as all the fairly recent bitter memories of highly destructive wars has forced them to take on a less chauvinistic worldview.

The republican platform is basically racist. It appeals to the tribal instincts of the down trodden and disadvantaged. It suggests there is a zero sum game in which their wealth has been stolen by negroes, mexicans and those perfidious french. Why would service workers vote for republicans? They find assurance. And democrats have been framed as stealing money from them. They need to realiaze they are being stolen blind right now. My opponent will say this idea will cost too much money.
It will cost exactly the same as one war in Iraq. Now why does my opponent think it is ok to spend that money on Iraqis but not Americans. Or, we could propose 19 point plans, say that we agree with the Repukes about abortion and gay marriage but won't change the law, and cave when Karl tells us to. It's worked so well recently.

There is also the need to defeat the rethug brands - one of which is an easy assumption of moral superiority. I'd contribute to a campaign to target rethug right-to-lifers with graphic photographs of dead iraqi children and effects of illegal abortions and how unwanted children are abused and make them feel the contradiction.

hen Kerry told George Bush in the debates "you are a good man, a good father", I nearly kicked in the TV.
Exactly. And how did Snarley Dick turn around and return the favor? Called Edwards a MIA slackjaw who never showed up for work. And Edwards sat there and smiled politely at him.
"We can't be so fixated on our desire to preserve the rights of ordinary Americans to legitimately own handguns and rifles . . . that we are unable to think about reality."

In the putz's defense, when you see a Congresscritter on teebee for scandal, you get one of two things:
If he's a Democrat, you get "DEMOCRAT Senator Doe, DEMOCRAT, did a corrupt DEMOCRAT thing today, and his DEMOCRAT ass was caught....."etc and so forth. As the prime time lead.
If a Republican gets on teebee for it , you get a quietly voiced "Senator Rowe was arraigned today for politically-motivated false charges. No comment yet from the brave, falsely-accused Senator." and carefully NO mention of Party affiliation. On the bottom ticker. At 3 AM.

I'm pissed at the Dems who won't show up and explain why these tragedies are happening because of union busting and because Bush put mining company lobbyists in charge of mine safety.
But, then, that would be "unseemly".
Doesn't stop the wingnut, though, does it? He's standing on top of the bodies of dead miners and spewing his talking points. And, who's winning?

All persuasive lies start have something like truth in them - and Kerry is a condescending upper class east coast elitist who thinks he is better than everyone else. Good marketing turns that into FDR, bad marketing turns it in waffling over whether getting down and dirty would be dignified.

Yes. Let's point out who's really running this show. the dems and repubs are all at the beck and call of these people. Why is that so difficult to understand? How is that it gets left out of every conversation about politics? The only thing I could alter there is putting names in places of titles. But it would work either way.

It will cost exactly the same as one war in Iraq. Now why does my opponent think it is ok to spend that money on Iraqis but not Americans. Why does my opponent not want to free our national security from dependence upon foreign oil. Why doesn't my opponent want to encourage tourism and economic growth.
Now he is on the defensive from a positive idea for progress.

Actually I believe Senator Sam is speaking of this "flag salute" in his remarks:
Originally, the pledge was said with the hand in the so-called “Bellamy Salute,” with the hand resting first outward from the chest, then the arm extending out from the body. Once Hitler came to power in Europe, some Americans were concerned that this position of the arm and hand resembled the salute rendered by the Nazi military. In 1942, Congress established the current practice of rendering the pledge with the right hand placed flat over the heart.
Sissies. How dare they deprive Sam and his cohorts of their gawd-given right to heil Hitl . . . er, I mean, to salute the flag?
