Aw, hell's bells, I was talking to myself two floors below.
Ahem.
Is this the thread that's all about me?
Good!
Very important letter, need input:
Thanks in large part to your supervision during my generalist internship, I will be receiving my MSW on August 4. It’s been an amazing journey and I’m looking forward to moving into the community to apply what I’ve learned on behalf of clients.
Along with internships at the [agency A] for two semesters, I’ve had the privilege of interning at the [Agency B] in [city] for the clinical portion of my training. This experience has presented the opportunity to work closely with people caring for loved ones in all stages of dementing disorders, in addition to conducting group sessions and working individually with clients in a clinical setting. Involvement with caregivers and those diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and related disorders has proved to be a rewarding experience and confirmed my enthusiasm for practice in this area.
As you know, I have an abiding admiration for the invaluable service that Hospice provides to people at a challenging and difficult stage of life. As I progress to a professional setting I can think of no organization for which I would rather work. The prospect of providing a supportive presence and securing resources for patients and families seems to me to offer an opportunity for service that is unparalleled in any other setting.
If you believe that I might be able to play a role as part of the Hospice team I would be grateful for the opportunity to meet with you.
Thank you so much for your help along the way – it truly made a difference

Slowly, slowly, Jim Hansen's latest paper is making it through the blogosphere. One day it might actually be news, who knows. As I've pointed out, Hansen is no quack, he's the godfather of modern climate change science, and so far has been right about *everything*:
The Independent blows the sea level rise story
“Sea levels may rise by 9 inches this century, scientists warn” reads the headline from the UK newspaper The Independent, reporting on a new Science magazine study (subs. req’d). You would probably surmise from this headline that the study predicted sea levels may rise by a mere 9 inches this century. But it didn’t.
The study predicted sea levels may rise by 9 inches the century just from the melting of inland glaciers and ice caps–not from either thermal expansion of the water or from dynamic destruction of either the Greenland or Antarctic ice sheets.
Actually, the story itself gets it mostly right — “This does not include the rise in sea levels caused by the thermal expansion of water, which could potentially double this figure.”
But the headline writer has insured that the vast majority of people who don’t read the story will think sea level rise this century is no big deal.
Interestingly, the authors of this study are quite confident the loss of inland ice will raise sea levels more this century than loss of ice from the great eye sheets — a very many, like Nasa’s James Hansen (who fears 17 feet of sea level rise or more by 2100), do not share.

Many of the pundits have to be talking out of their asses is the problem and they get used to intellectual laziness.
They have no time to study issues because they are in the green room getting make up applied, running to do another interview with another station, calling a radio talk show host on their cell phones, going to DC parties, and somehow trying to manage writing a column on an issue they know jack shit about.

Joe Klein is a rich man thanks to his long career in journalism and his best selling book, which he lied about when asked if he was the "Anonymous" author.
Klein is like so many in the punditocracy, they get hooked rubbing shoulders with the rich and powerful. Klein knows that if he were to say unkind things about Goopers and Bushboy, especially a few years ago, his invitations to the parties would disappear.
And so like a crack-addict, he sells out more and more of himself so he can maintain contact with those in power, until there is nothing left of Joe Klein except an agit-prop.

A Taliban spokesman claims that the group has shot and killed two Germans after a deadline for negotiations passed.
Yousuf Ahmadi, speaking by phone on Saturday, said: "We executed one of the Germans and will kill the other one unless the government of Germany or the Afghan government contact us for negotiations at 1:00pm [08:30 GMT] today."
An hour and a half later, he said: "Since the governments did not contact us, we killed the second German hostage at 1:10pm."
The Taliban has also threatened to kill a group of about 20 South Koreans, mostly women, seized in Afghanistan's Ghazni province on Thursday.

Abstract. I suggest that a `scientific reticence' is inhibiting the communication of a threat of a potentially large sea level rise. Delay is dangerous because of system inertias that could create a situation with future sea level changes out of our control. I argue for calling together a panel of scientific leaders to hear evidence and issue a prompt plain-written report on current understanding of the sea level change issue.

Denmark has completed the evacuation of some 200 Iraqis who it feared faced danger for their association with Danish troops in southern Iraq.
A final group of 80 Iraqis has arrived in Denmark, joining 120 already there.
The airlift of the Iraqis, including translators for Danish troops, had so far been kept secret for security reasons, a Danish official said.
Denmark is expected to withdraw its group of 480 troops from Basra in southern Iraq next month.
Militants fighting US-led forces regard as traitors any Iraqis who work with foreign troops.
The family members of these Iraqis have also been targeted in militant attacks.

plantsman,
I so wish David Shuster would replace that asinine twit, Tucker Carlson.
Dan Abrams, who runs MSNBC, is a vast improvement over Scarboy in the 9 PM segment that follows KO.
If all of the above comes to pass, MSNBC could become the antidote to FUX NEWS poison.

My mom was pretty much adamant that she could care for him, anyway, but I think she made a mistake in that assessment.
People really want to do this when they can -- they feel it's a duty and genuinely want to provide the care to the person they love. The only thing is it can be exhausting and getting the help can help the caregivers as much or as little as they need, while making sure the patient gets what they need.
The chili cookoff sounds like a very fitting tribute. Send me a couple of bowls!

A transcript of the interrogation of a doctor charged in Australia in connection with the London and Glasgow terror attacks reveals inconsistencies in police statements about the case.
Publication of the 142-page transcript has fuelled growing concerns over the apparent lack of evidence against Mohammed Haneef, a 27-year-old Indian doctor who was arrested in Australia as he was about to board a flight to Bangalore on Monday July 2, two days after the failed car bomb attacks in London and Scotland.
In police affidavits filed with a court in Brisbane, officers stated that throughout two days of questioning Dr Haneef gave no explanation as to why his ticket to India was one way. But in the interview transcripts Dr Haneef, who has been charged with providing support to a terrorist organisation, told officers he was flying to Bangalore via Singapore to see his wife and new baby, who had just been born by caesarean section. He said his father-in-law bought him the single ticket and he was planning to buy his return ticket in Bangalore with his own money.

Turkey's election candidates have moved into the final day of campaigning, ahead of the country's general election.
Campaigning ends officially at 6pm (15:00 GMT) on Saturday, with surveys indicating that the ruling party of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey's prime minister, is likely to retain its majority.
An election win will give the AK party another five years in power, though it is likely to be with a weaker margin as other parties join the parliament.

Turkey's Prime Minister has threatened an invasion of northern Iraq if, after the Turkish election on Sunday, talks fail with Iraq and the US on curbing the activities of Turkish Kurd guerrillas.
Turkish artillery has been firing increasingly heavy barrages at villages in the north of Iraqi Kurdistan. After three Turkish soldiers were killed and five wounded by a mine laid by PKK guerrillas last week, some 100 shells exploded around the border town of Zakho, forcing residents to flee.
The Prime Minister, Recep Tayyib Erdogan, said the PKK fighters had been using northern Iraq as a base to make attacks.

I recall during the run-up to the war, Bush's speeches really did tip-toe aroung saying it explicitly exactly so years later a press secretary could 'deny it'.
I also recall the first time Bush said Saddam had nothing to do with 9/11 was during a media blitz over a Hurrican Irene that was headed toward the middle Atlantic states. The media was in the wall-to-wall hurricane mode.
Bush got his statement on the record and absolutely no one reported it.

OT: Casual sexual behaviour, often fuelled by alcohol, is causing an alarming rise in sexually transmitted infections among teenage girls and young men, the Health Protection Agency said yesterday.
Gay men are also contracting increasing numbers of infections, which suggests the fear of HIV/Aids has decreased and that more people are having unsafe sex.
The overall number of infections went up last year by 2%, from 368,341 to 376,508, which the HPA says may suggest a slowdown in what had appeared to be a rapid rise over the past few years. But there are real concerns about the behaviour of young people and gay men. Among teenage girls aged 16 to 19 the numbers catching genital herpes - an unpleasant sexual infection which is treatable but never completely cured - are up by 16%.

Of course Gore is looking good. He was always something of an exercise hound-- the trogolytes were criticizing him for having a gym on the campaign bus, way back when. Doing the no-stop travel for the global warming campaign took him out of routine, and he gained weight. Now he's back to it. None of this is surprising. And, yes, he's running. In both senses of the word.

A lot of our elite scribblers and chatters are just truly and profoundly stupid.
I run into this all the time in the wine business... people tell me: "But this wine got 92 points!"
I say, "What's 92 points worth from a 72 point reviewer?"
It's astonishing how many people will persistently buy things they don't care for because they've supposedly been well-reviewed, and then figure that the problem is with them.
Well it is, but it isn't the problem they imagine.

The Military-Industrial Complex has had a stranglehold on the US government since before the time Ike warned about it in his 1961 farewell speech.
To sustain their $500 billion/year fraud, they must constantly manufacture or inflate fear. Fear of Commies, fear of terrorists, fear of rogue states.
It never ends. In the meantime our infrastructure and schools crumble, our democracy is made into a sham and our lives are put far more at risk, while the few, the rich, the greedy make obscene amounts of money.
