GravatarI'm provoked to say it again: universal health care results, in country after country, in a system that covers everybody, costs a bit more than half what we pay in America per capita, and yields better health statistics across the board.

Point of fact, we can't afford NOT to pass universal health care, and significant reform. What passes for McCain's health plan is surpassingly stupid, and will predictably worsen both cost and access to care, while enriching for-profit insurance companies.

Well if you insist.

GravatarHecate: I'd never dream of it...

pseud: you miss my point. Done correctly, competently, and with better results, a reformed health care system providing universal coverage would cost less, not more, than our current system. Examples exist across the industrialized world: France, Australia, Germany, Japan, Spain, others. The cost savings would be a return to the primacy of primary care, sane utilization of technology and specialist care, negotiating authority for drug costs, an end to wasteful profit-making entities which duplicate, and strangle, needed services in community hospitals, a decrease in defensive medicine with a more reliable system for identification and indemnification of victims of medical mishap and malpractice. And I'm just warming up...

Bottlemania: How Water Went on Sale and Why We Bought It

Author: Elizabeth Royte

About the Program

In "Bottlemania" Elizabeth Royte reports on the bottled water phenomenon, saying water sales have now surpassed sales of milk and beer. She discusses the environmental impact of discarded bottles and calls attention to water rights battles between bottling corporations and the communities where the water originates. Ms. Royte warns consumers about bottled water, saying bottled water plants are inspected only once a year, much less frequently than city water systems.

About the Author

Elizabeth Royte is the author of "Garbage Land" and "The Tapir's Morning Bath." She has written for the New York Times Magazine, Harper's, National Geographic, Outside, Smithsonian, and the New Yorker.

To qualify for the program, assets must have been originated or issued on or before September 17, 2008. How much real eastate value has been lost in dollars.

Gravatarpseud: yup.

Real reform in health care would be a major economic shift. Hospitals are not uncommonly the largest employer in a town. Lots of people work as coders, or claims managers, or elsewhere in a system with an unacceptable overhead of something like 30% (Medicare's is around 5%), and there's no denying they'd be hurt.

Non-health businesses would have more money, though. And overall, costs would go down.

Gravatar...universal health care results, in country after country, in a system that covers everybody, costs a bit more than half what we pay in America per capita

Problem is gonna be, seems to me, to convince the Medical/Insurance Complex that it needs to perform the same services that it does now--more, in fact, as the number of people who seek medical care will rise--for a bit more than half the remuneration. I forsee a bit of resistance to that idea...

Gravatar, Thers nails it.
dave™©

Yes, he sure does.

GravatarI can't get over that WSJ piece about the markets striking back:

"We're opposed to adding provisions that will affect [or] undermine the deal substantively," said Scott Talbott, senior vice president of government affairs at the Financial Services Roundtable, whose members include the nation's largest banks, securities firms and insurers.

A deal killer for the group: a proposal that would grant bankruptcy judges new powers to lower the principal, interest rate or both on a mortgage as part of a bankruptcy proceeding.

"If there's a risk a judge could change the terms...that will increase the risk of mortgages [and] increase the cost," Mr. Talbott said. "It makes homes less affordable for everybody."

Brokerage firms are fighting limits on executive compensation for firms that participate in the package, saying that particularly in an industry under siege, the limits will hurt their ability to find and retain top brass. The industry could lose that one: proposals to limit executive pay enjoy bipartisan support and backing from the Republican and Democratic presidential candidates.

Gravatarfind it interesting that some Republicans (see Larry Kudlow) are blaming "poor" Americans for this financial crisis. According to Republicans the poor Americans knew better than to take loans that they could not afford.

I really hope they keep up this argument. As you know the underwriters of the loans have zero responsibility.

GravatarWhat is so goddamned maddening is not what the wall street fuckers did that was illegal but the fact that what they were doing WAS legal thanks to 25 years of de-fucking-regulation.

And they blame poor people and
have a case of the screaming fits if you talk about helping people purchase health insurance.

I was just reading in NY Magazine about how filthy McCain's lies are and yet - how it all may work. I'm remembering how a decent guy like Gore was ripped to shreds by these people over something that was true.

It's all making me a tad grumpy.

Gravatar But with a trillion in govt funds being injected for rich white boy bailout, would a quick shift to single payor have been any worse for most people?

Well, there are some places that would suffer, such as the Magic MRI Machine places that invest millions in the machine then set up cushy deals with doctors for referrals.

But: my wife just cancelled a mammogram because an hour on the phone with BCBS didn't establish whether they'd cover it. They'd make the decision based upon 'medical necessity' -- that is, a drone at a computer would decide after the fact, by putting it into the number-cruncher, regardless of what the referring doctor said.

It's hard to get from here to there for lots of reasons, not least the fact that med school grads go into specialisations if they want money and respect. GPs in the British NHS get respect and good money.

Forgiving med school debt in exchange for general practice is a start. Expanding med schools is another step.

But breaking free from the current system -- where you simply can't trust what a fucking medical professional tells you -- is hard.

GravatarTMI: of course there'd be massive resistance from those making out like bandits under the current regime. It's take strong political leadershop indeed to do it.

But is universal health care desirable, ehlpful, even possible? Eminently. real world examples attest to it, and to a multiplicity of possible solutiong.

Without implying that being unfaithful is comparable to murder, people keep killing each other, too. Isn't the whole point of moral systems that you don't do what you're genetically wired to do?

IMHO, the present system is more like a system that penalizes folks for eating or breathing that like one that penalizes them for doing murder. Assuming that a basic human need is evil is just fucked up. People don't need to murder.

GravatarProfWombat | 09.20.08 - 11:17 pm

A friend of mine has just been diagnosed with stage 2-3 lung cancer.
He would be treatable with good possible outcome if it weren't for the mesothelioma. He's 58. His father managed an asbestos plant when he was a small child. He'd come home, pick him up and play with him and they never knew that all the while
my friend was acquiring the threads of his ultimate end. I don't understand why it is that he's not a candidate for a lung transplant.

He's not planning to undergo treatment. He just wants to travel in the time he has left.

GravatarThe industry could lose that one: proposals to limit executive pay enjoy bipartisan support and backing from the Republican and Democratic presidential candidates.

Back in the day, when the web was young, I converted corporate annual reports to HTML, and noted that the committees that decide executive pay are made up of... other corporate executives.

Try that at your workplace.

Gravatarpseud: it's even worse than that; the docs often own the MRI machines they refer to.

And MRI machines are insanely good investments. An actual case I know involves a doc's $15,000 up front investment in one. He got around $50,000 yearly return on investment for around ten years, then sold out, with the other partners, to a management company, netting over $800,000 for his share.

You may know that dedicated, directed-beam radiation therapy units, aimed at prostate cancer treatment, are marketed largely to urologists, the very docs charged with deciding between surgery, radiation therapy, hormonal therapy and simple observation when treating prostate cancer. No little moral hazard there.

Depends what you're calling a basic human need. Speaking as someone who's been massively unfaithful in his day, I certainly don't feel it was something I had to do, or had any real excuse for doing.

Anyway, I've never understood how one consistent human behavior gets called "natural," and another doesn't. Obviously, there's a basic human need for monogamy, too, or people all over the world wouldn't work so hard at it.

it's the shape of the asbestos fibers. they tend to stick in the lung wall. they also fracture in such a way that they're always little spears with barbs. at best they break off leaving the point in the lung

GravatarFor pseudonymous in nc (which I assume is "North Carolina):

Are mammograms covered by insurance?

North Carolina law requires health insurance to cover screening mammograms, including one baseline exam for women ages 35-39, a mammogram every other year for women ages 40-49, and an annual mammogram for women age 50 and over. Coverage may include more frequent exams for women at high risk. Medicare now covers mammograms every year.

They also list free or reduced-cost mammogram services in NC, in case the insurance company wants to keep breaking the law.

I think we're all we've got, that life is contingent far more than planned, that we must do our very best regardless, not because God wills it but because that's what makes life worth living. We must love one another or die. A ringing affirmation of life and life's purpose, as well as a despairing evocation of the consequences if we don't...

Ever wonder who gave Hillary that terrible idea of claiming that she decided to run through sniper fire with her daughter, and that her subordinates approved this? It's a really strange thing for a sophisticated, grown-up person like Hillary, who has no record of making any bizarre, weird claims, to claim. It's the type of thing you'd expect her to say only if she was under some kind of duress.

I wonder who gave Barack that terrible idea of making that "lipstick on a pig" remark, which makes him sound like he's being nasty to a woman in a sexist way, when Republicans probably particularly picked Sarah Palin in the hopes that her gender could help their ticket. So odd.

GravatarI read a story in The New Yorker About the Dirty Tricks guy who helped bring Spitzer down with the call girl revelation.
http://www.newyorker.com/ reporti...2fa_fact_toobin
Roger Stone

He has a long history of GOP dirty tricks back to the Nixon era.

The part that I took away from the story is that the Wall Street people were PISSED and so they put out feelers to get dirt on Spitzer. Of course they would use whatever they got. They went for money but they found juicy juicy sex. Like the Clinton deal.

Like Ken Starr they would look anywhere to get back at Spitzer.

I think we should draft him to do some oversight on this and then just to keep the rest of the puritans happy we would draft his wife to keep an eye on Spitzer!

GravatarRemember when the Republicans did their staged "working class riot" in 2000. Since they had enough brains (and the right character) to try something like that, I wonder if it is logical to conclude that they try things like that other times and in other contexts. No, no-- that is just too far fetched. Far more realistic to assume that the only time they were caught-- or chose to reveal what they did-- besides Zell Miller, it was coincidentally the only time they have ever chosen to do this. Uh-huh.

GravatarI wonder who gave Barack that terrible idea of making that "lipstick on a pig" remark, which makes him sound like he's being nasty to a woman in a sexist way,..

They could even put words in the mouths of "liberals," doing all our arguments correct down to a T, except for one or two details that they think make our arguments look really vulnerable, or otherwise make our ideology look really unatractive. This criticism of the believer's instinct strikes me as seriously bad logic.

It is quite possible that but for divine intervention, tens or hundreds of thousands more might have died/suffered.

As Evelyn Waugh used to say, just think of how much worse a sinner he would have been but for the effects of divine grace upon his soul.

Glad to hear you're OK - that storm was scary as all hell, and I'm in Tennessee.

It's a natural reaction for people to do that (to a point) but when they say things like "God killed those other people, but spared me, how great thou art" I can lose it.

After the Challenger space shuttle exploded, a local teacher was all over the news here, saying God kept her from winning a chance to be on the shuttle. Like...God picked the other woman to die. It can turn sickening - and if you're on the losing side, it can get in head that you did something to deserve it if those people are yapping around you.

GravatarHi Spocko, yes, it was a Good Day. I started off by going to the opening of my local Obama campaign office with about five hundred of my fellow dirty fucking hippies. Place was so packed with vehicles plastered with bumper stickers like mine, it actually almost warmed my cold, shriveled heart. Spent a little time in a book store today, as well. Bought some fluff, which I sat down and immediately read (first book in the series on which the new HBO series True Blood is based), and also bought The Audacity of Hope, which I have somehow never read. Got to spend some time with the old man, which hardly ever happens any more, so yeah, Good Day.

I read a lot of SF and some books I consider 'Kilgore Trout books" interesting ideas crappy writing.

And they had a whole catagory of people called "Forths" that consisted of people who were giving treatment to give them an extra 30 years of life.

Well, besides having shit for brains, that is.

GravatarThe pollsters set out to determine why Obama is locked in a close race with McCain even as the political landscape seems to favor Democrats. President Bush's unpopularity, the Iraq war and a national sense of economic hard times cut against GOP candidates, as does that fact that Democratic voters outnumber Republicans.

The findings suggest that Obama's problem is close to home - among his fellow Democrats, particularly non-Hispanic white voters. Just seven in 10 people who call themselves Democrats support Obama, compared to the 85 percent of self-identified Republicans who back McCain.

The survey also focused on the racial attitudes of independent voters because they are likely to decide the election.

GravatarRace is not the biggest factor driving Democrats and independents away from Obama. Doubts about his competency loom even larger, the poll indicates. More than a quarter of all Democrats expressed doubt that Obama can bring about the change they want, and they are likely to vote against him because of that.

GravatarNever took you AS ONE to demean an idealist...

Gravatarevery time El Esposo mentions the polls I tell him to follow the money. So he did. Turns out Obama has out-raised McSpain 4:1. Gravatar"So, then, I wonder what the polls really are. Anyone wanna hazard a guess?"

McCain is a solid 43 to 45 percent tops. Obama is steady at 49, and has always been so. The "undecided indedpendents" category is actually quite slim; true independents have already decided to vote Obama.

McCain doesn't know shit and doesn't want to. He just wants to be president.

"Bad things happen to good people"...we grapple with that all the time, all you have to do is look around at other people. I know most of the "God's will" people mean well. I'd rather think, if there is a God, he or she suffers along with us.

And I like to think of Woody Allen's bit - in Hannah and Her Sisters, I think - he's despairing, on the verge of suicide over the terrible tragedies in the world and he stumbles into a Marx Brothers movie and recovers.

Adn that's the flip side - how can you explain the pure, unleashed joy of the Marx Brothers? And thank God (or..you know..whomever..) for that.

She's used that way, sure - but the reality is quite different. She's more regressive than Bush or Cheney s far as social views. And her constant lies say she's so not about change.

Something else is going on if they use that as an excuse. All IMO, but it's based on knowing her record.

The best thing that could happen - Obama is seen for what he is as a candidate, not a black guy. And she's seen for what she is as a candidate - not a woman. I hope so - I think he'll do better, she'll do worse.

I wouldn't buy a used tampon from George Bush and he wants us to trust him?

Bush said yesterday he's unconcerned that the price tag on the package may seem high.

``I'm sure there are some of my friends out there that are saying, `I thought this guy was a market guy, what happened to him?''' the president said. ``My first instinct was to let the market work, until I realized, while being briefed by the experts, how significant this problem became.''

The Bush administration seeks ``dictatorial power unreviewable by the third branch of government, the courts, to try to resolve the crisis,'' said Frank Razzano, a former assistant chief trial attorney at the Securities and Exchange Commission now at Pepper Hamilton LLP in Washington. ``We are taking a huge leap of faith.''

McCain must be feeling like elias, at this point.

Gravatar"Oh the snot has caked against my pants. It has turned into crystal..."

GravatarOnly 12% of McCain's supporters said they were excited about him before Palin. And for God's sake - she's an idiot and a stone liar. People may notice these things.

GravatarThe next one is hell, yeah.

Gravatarthey almost got me again. had me worried i'd be selling apples on the corner of eight avenue and fourteenth street or sumptin....saying yeah go ahead tax us all to bail out investment banks...but then i remembered who these assholes are, that same old crowd that has lied to us for years and years....so i say if we are going to do something extraordinary to save western civilization LOAD THE MOTHER FUCKER UP LIKE A CHRISTMAS TREE!

put stuff in it to rebuild roads and bridges, to help with mortgages and health care and schools and aunt em's enemas or whatever...i mean if we are going to go to the cleaners for 700 billion add another two or three billion and TAKE CARE OF THE BASIC NEEDS OF THE PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY.

GravatarWimberley.

My grams is up there. Small world, big state, huh?

GravatarHey, Spocko, I hate to be the bearer of bad news...

GravatarResearchers used mathematical modeling to sort out the relative impact of a huge swath of variables that might have an impact on people's votes - including race, ideology, party identification, the hunger for change and the sentiments of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's backers.

GravatarJames Crumley is dead.

Well, bummer..another terrific writer.

GravatarWhat kind of nutsy election turns on a Veep candidate, anyway? It doesn't say much for McCain.

Yeah, I mean, she's used as a change agent, but it's an illusion.

I hope, after McCain loses, we get some insider giving the full story about why Palin was the pick.

He seems to have an ego the size of Alaska..he's probably justifiying it all, somehow.

I never thought I'd see someone out-cynical Bush.

Gravatar
imagine where he'd be without her. Holy shit.

I agree that without the Palin stunt pick, he might not have gotten that post convention bounce.

On the other hand, her negatives are now exploding. In the end I think, he'd have probably been better off picking a VP with legimate credentials instead of a demented sideshow clown.

Either way, though, he's a loser.

With respect, you're dealing with Republicans. If there's anything the last eight years have taught us, it's that no matter what level you think they can't sink below, they always will.

From your keyboard to God's ear..

I'd bet the house that it's mortifyingly stupid. He obviously didn't vet her worth a damn. And as usual, as a Republican, he pretends the attention on her shaky background and lies are "media bias".

I hope he goes the way of Felix Macacawitz, just more so, for assuming people are morons.

Gravatar
With respect, you're dealing with Republicans. If there's anything the last eight years have taught us, it's that no matter what level you think they can't sink below, they always will.

Which state is it where they are trying to get people with foreclosed homes off the voter roles?

The funny thing with that stunt is that it will likely strike down as many GOPers as Democrats, but it obviously plays into their psychotic mentality that the only people who get into trouble with their mortgages are lazy poor people, and therefore Democrat.

GravatarIt is an expression of faith, without a doubt. Declaring it is in fact to utter an oath. Yes, it is a curse in many ways, but it can also be a benediction.

Hitler wasn't in power in 1930, and didn't support the bill in question. But other than that, great point.

GravatarGood fucking night.

GravatarIf there's anything the last eight years have taught us, it's that no matter what level you think they can't sink below, they always will.

It's a failing of mine - in part because I can't square Republicans I know with the assholes who run the party. I'm never quite prepared for the places they will go. Not at this national level, at least.

I just read somewhere Lee Atwater once ran a campaign against a Holocaust survivor and put out ads saying the guy didn't believe in "The Lord".

I never thought Rove was the problem with Bush - I knew he was a symptom.

GravatarWhich state is it where they are trying to get people with foreclosed homes off the voter roles?

The funny thing with that stunt is that it will likely strike down as many GOPers as Democrats

Kinda doubt the poll-watchers are gonna be after harrassing the more...upscale looking?...voters. In fact I bet they concentrate on precincts with a high % of Dems, and pretty much leave the Upper Crustaceans alone, mortgage status be damned.

GravatarGood fucking night, Phila!

GravatarWow, I spend the day with family, avoiding the news and I come back to find out this bogus plan is going to give a trillion dollars to wall street?

WTF??

GravatarSo, I did some number crunching with census and house price data.

$700bn: roughly, all the residential real estate in the Miami/South Florida metropolitan area.

GravatarBloomberg News: "Options under consideration (by congress) include establishing an $800 billion fund to purchase so-called failed assets and a separate $400 billion pool at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. to insure investors in money-market funds, said two people briefed by congressional staff who spoke on condition of anonymity because the plans may change."

GravatarShouldn't one condition of the 1.2 trillion bailout be that the fat cats who engineered it have to jump out of a window, after being reduced to a penniless wretch?

Fuckers.

GravatarLessons In Failing To Pass High School Physics, From An Expert

a fundie handed me this priceless document today, which i am painstakingly copying by hand

the two foremost scientific laws concerning the universe are the 1st and 2nd laws of thermodynamics. Simply stated, these laws say that nothing is now being created or annihilated and that all systems (living or otherwise), unless otherwise designed or without intelligence maintaining them, become less complex and eventually run down and wear out. What does the data reveal? Answer: Nothing is now being created or annihilated in the universe and it is running down and wearing out. THis is what the creation model postulates. The evolution model postulates tha the universe, as we know it, started from dead and less complex matter and became more and more complex even to the production of living systems, including man. With the associated scientific facts, the 1st and 2nd laws fit the creation model best

d-. you can take the course again next semester

.

GravatarBernie Sanders nails it. Choice passage:

The people who can best afford to pay and the people who have benefited most from Bush’s economic policies are the people who should provide the funds for the bailout. It would be immoral to ask the middle class, the people whose standard of living has declined under Bush, to pay for this bailout while the rich, once again, avoid their responsibilities. Further, if the government is going to save companies from bankruptcy, the taxpayers of this country should be rewarded for assuming the risk by sharing in the gains that result from this government bailout.

Specifically, to pay for the bailout, which is estimated to cost up to $1 trillion, the government should:

a) Impose a five-year, 10 percent surtax on income over $1 million a year for couples and over $500,000 for single taxpayers. That would raise more than $300 billion in revenue;

b) Ensure that assets purchased from banks are realistically discounted so companies are not rewarded for their risky behavior and taxpayers can recover the amount they paid for them; and

c) Require that taxpayers receive equity stakes in the bailed-out companies so that the assumption of risk is rewarded when companies’ stock goes up.
