Sen. Barack Obama's refusal to wear an American flag lapel pin along with a photo of him not putting his hand over his heart during the National Anthem led conservatives on Internet and in the media to question his patriotism.
Now Obama's wife, Michelle, has drawn their ire, too, for saying recently that she's really proud of her country for the first time in her adult life.
Conservative consultants say that combined, the cases could be an issue for Obama in the general election if he wins the nomination, especially as he runs against Vietnam war hero Sen. John McCain.
"The reason it hasn't been an issue so far is that we're still in the microcosm of the Democratic primary," said Republican consultant Roger Stone. "Many Americans will find the three things offensive. Barack Obama is out of the McGovern wing of the party, and he is part of the blame America first crowd."
Yes, that's Roger "C.U.N.T." Stone Pickle's talking to.

I'll say it again: Obama's charisma and small differences with Clinton are far more interesting to horse-race style reporters than are his actual policies, which are substantive. His alleged lack of specificity is far more attributable to media attention on other things.
I'll say it again: I gave my vote to Clinton on policy points, rather than a knockout, and would happily vote for eighte in November against McCain, or any other Republican.
We have to win this one. The whole world is watching.

Warner to Obama: Bring Me Your Captain
By Leslie Wayne
One of the dramatic moments in Thursday’s Democratic debate came when Senator Barack Obama — in making the case that Iraq was the wrong place to launch a war — cited an Army captain in Afghanistan who told him of a rifle platoon that lacked manpower, ammunition and Humvees. As Mr. Obama recounted, the soldiers looked for captured Taliban weapons as it was easier to be armed that way than “to get properly equipped by our current commander in chief.” http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.c...e-your-captain/
This could be interesting.

'Sen. Barack Obama's refusal to wear an American flag lapel pin along with a photo of him not putting his hand over his heart during the National Anthem led conservatives on Internet and in the media to question his patriotism.'
So far, entirely true. The next sentence or two, though, should read:
'When asked about it, Obama laughed, and pointed out that a flag lapel pin is a recent, hardly universal affectation, that most people stand but don't, in fact, cover their hearts for the National Anthem, and that, if that's all the right has to offer in opposition to his candidacy, he's looking forward even more to Democratic electoral success in November.'

I'd prefer not to have my face stamped by a jackboot in Oceania, or be smothered with kindness by Huxley's World Controller. I'd prefer a legal regime where labor is free to obtain its full product by bargaining in a labor market without the state's thumb on the scale on behalf of the owning classes. But if I'm forced to choose between forms of statism, there's no doubt which one I'll pick.
As Larry Gambone says, welfare statism and corporate liberalism are the price the owning classes pay for state capitalism:
...as I repeat ad nauseam, "social democracy is the price you pay for corporate capitalism." There Aint No Sech Thing As A Free Lunch - if you are going to strip the majority of their property and independence and turn them into wage slaves - you have to provide for them.(12)

"Dear Warner, the days when rethugs could make demands on democratic senators and/or candidates are over. Oh, and if you think we're going to let you scapegoat this captain, you got another thing coming.
Elections have consequences, motherfucker. kai, thx bai ."
A secret report, suppressed by US defence chiefs and obtained by The Observer, warns that major European cities will be sunk beneath rising seas as Britain is plunged into a 'Siberian' climate by 2020. Nuclear conflict, mega-droughts, famine and widespread rioting will erupt across the world.
The document predicts that abrupt climate change could bring the planet to the edge of anarchy as countries develop a nuclear threat to defend and secure dwindling food, water and energy supplies. The threat to global stability vastly eclipses that of terrorism, say the few experts privy to its contents.
'Disruption and conflict will be endemic features of life,' concludes the Pentagon analysis. 'Once again, warfare would define human life.' "

Fact is, I do wish Obama were more in agreement with George McGovern, who, in addition to holding the Distinguished Flying Cross for courage as a bomber pilot during World War II, was exactly correct about Vietnam and Nixon, and continues to be far more correct than most. ok my 2pence worth on this whole American election thing:
i'm worried that McCain will win because Democrats are sniping at each other, and this also gives time for the Republicans time to recover.
i think it will do them harm in the long term, instead of focusing on the real enemy they want to be mean to each other. They are waisting valuable opportunities
I think McCain will end up having Middle America rally behind him because of the natural inclination towards conservatism
a good portion of the electorate, believe it or not couldnt care less about the www and another good portion could give a shit less whats on his web site, they just want to hear him say what he will do. less flowery rhetoric and more substance.

I guess you are entitled to have those feelings of apprehension...you are after all, across the pond.
I wish you could be here to see the crowds outside of stadiums and arenas all across the United States, lining-up to hear BO speak. It's been awe inspiring to see the youngest and the oldest among us rallying behind him.
There is a palpable movement sweeping across the US, there is a real hope that things will change. This is THE TIME for real, transparent change and I believe Americans will choose hope over fear...in the end, the Repubes are toast.

In 2004, only about 55% of eligible voters cast a ballot.
The election was "decided" by about 2.4%.
Should a candidate get 10% out of the non-voting 45% to the polls, that candidate would win a convincing victory.
Mining this 45% seems to be Mr. Obama's strategy. Note the 1,000,000 small contributors.

I think McCain will end up having Middle America rally behind him because of the natural inclination towards conservatism - thats my pessimistic thoughts Moonbootica
Fear not Moon. The meme about Dems tearing each other apart is little more than GOP whistling past the graveyard. I know b/c I heard it from a wingnut coworker who gets all his news from Rush. The same one who looked at me with uncomprehending bemusement when I referred to people being anxious about the economy. "What are you talking about? The economy is GREAT!" he said. When I sent him poll after poll showing that everyone agrees it's tanking and people are scared to death he changed the subject.
Believe me, no one, and I mean NO ONE who is inclined to vote for the Democrats will instead vote for the GOP or stay home if their preferred Dem loses out. Upwards of 70% voting in the primaries and caucuses have said they'll vote for the eventual nominee. Plus, the turnout on the Dem side has been unprecedented. On the GOP side, not so much.
I never discount the ability of the Dem leaders to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory myself, but one thing I agree with the bandwagoneers about is that there is a fucking tidal wave gathering force for November, and it is coming down with great vengeance and furious anger upon those who would attempt to poison and destroy my democracy.
That is, the voters are about to get medieval on Republican asses.

A control order on a British convert to Islam was quashed yesterday when a high court judge ruled there was no "reasonable suspicion" that he intended to take part in terrorism abroad.
MI5 had alleged that the restriction of movement measures were necessary because Cerie Bullivant, 25, of Dagenham, Essex, could be planning to travel to Iraq or Afghanistan to join up with terrorists.
Mr Justice Collins quashed the order, which was made last year to replace an order made in June 2006.
The first order was triggered when Bullivant was stopped at Heathrow as he was about to fly to Syria. He had been travelling with Ibrahim Adam, the brother of fertiliser bomb plotter Anthony Garcia, and said he intended to study Arabic.
The Security Service judged that he and Adam intended "to carry out extremist Islamic activity" - possibly intending to travel on to Iraq or Afghanistan to fight against western forces, or to conduct a "martyrdom operation".
Mr Justice Collins said it may have been reasonable to assume that individuals with whom Bullivant associated might have been involved in terrorism, but that did not make it reasonable to suspect he had the same inclinations. "The dangers of guilt by association are obvious."
Bullivant said outside court in a statement: "Although I am very happy that this order has now been lifted, this draconian legislation is still continuing to ruin the lives of others and their families."
FYI: Two out of three does not work.

OT: Uganda's Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) and government have signed a truce deal in an important step towards a final peace settlement expected to be signed next week.
After talks in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, the parties on Saturday signed the "permanent ceasefire" agreement aimed at ending the two-decade-long conflict.
The LRA's revolt against Yoweri Museveni, the president, since 1986 has devastated north Uganda, killed tens of thousands of people and uprooted nearly two million people.
Joaquim Chissano, the UN mediator, said: "It is the laying down of arms. It is the end of the war."
What is left to be agreed on is a demobilisation deal.

The only thing Obama has going for me is that if he's nominated and wins, he shuts out Colin Powell and Condi Rice from racking up another counterintuitive first for the R's.
It's interesting that those who are most against religion are typically the most eager to follow blindly a secular messiah.
It's interesting that those who are most for shoving religion down everyone's throats have no souls.

Dude, this is the first time I've thought Atrios was a tool.
"Issues section"? George Bush had one of those too. The thing is that if a presidential candidate isn't stressing issues, then whether or not he has positions on issues is probably irrelevant to about 99% of his/her voters.
Remember "compassionate conservatism"?
"Hope and change" are the new It. How many Obama supporters know that Obama's solution to the subprime mortgage crisis was exactly the same as GWB's, until he recently added a very anemic version of a proposal being bandied about by Chris Dodd?
How many know that Obama's criticism of Hillary's subprime solution is exactly the same as RW libertarians? How many know that Obama's health care plan is the plan that the health care industry wants to see enacted, as the best possible avenue to "reform" without seriously damaging their profits?
How many know that Obama is in bed with the ethanol lobby, and is considered one of the worst Dems on environmental issues?
I won't claim he's an empty suit. He's a corporate bitch, is what he is. And you'll all see that in about 4 months. Tack to the left for a primary, tack to the right for the general election.

Yea, I was for Edwards, but now I'm for Obama. Hilary does seem better on written policies (except for foreign policy), but she and Bill represent the sickness that America has had for the past 28 or so years. Just listening to Obama on NBC News defending his attack on Hillary's healthcare plan which has mandates to achieve universal coverage.
How can Obama have mandates for parents to buy health insurance--then say that mandates for covering individuals is wrong?
Is there some argument he's made that I'm missing?
Or is it different if it's for the children? Then mandates are good and responsible?

Thatcher breaking the coal miners and Reagan breaking the air traffic controllers were two of a kind.
A good part of the ugliness of the Clinton years had nothing whatever to do with Clinton. I'd lay the blame for most of it, in fact, on Hyde, Gingrich, Limbaugh, Starr, Gerth, the WSJ editorial page and the like. They didn't try to work with Clinton. They tried to destroy him.

He gave in time and again to the howls of the Rightwing on just about everything except his little BJ. I ordinarily hate stores where the plot is driven exclusively by stupidity, but that's never really bothered me about Gump because (1) it takes the concept beyond the breaking point to farce, and (2) Hanks did a good job of portraying simple as something other than stupid. I'd rather trash McBush. How about this from the Sierra Club?
Two weeks ago John McCain was the only Senator to duck a crucial vote on the future of clean energy in America -- dooming to failure the measure that would have helped make renewable energy more affordable and accessible. Now it turns out this missed vote is part of a pattern.
Last week, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) released the 2007 National Environmental Scorecard giving Senator McCain a score of ZERO. According to the scorecard, McCain was the only member of Congress to skip all 15 crucial environmental votes scored by LCV.

Elias, tough. If you're so stupid to smoke pot in your car and run a stop sign or other violation, you deserve to be busted.
If you're so stupid as to roll a blunt on a sidewalk bench in broad daylight, WITH A GUN IN YOUR WAISTBAND, you deserve to be busted.
And so on and so on.
Both of the above were recently noted in the local Dorchester Reporter crime watch column.

underwhelm: didn't see it that way myself, and, in the context of an America regularly reminded by its president that his C+ collegiate record has been no bar to his, er, success, I find it the wrong message to exalt simplicity. Things aren't simple. It's as simple as that.

4 legs, what I'm trying and failing to express to you is that some of us support Hillary just as you support Barack, and soon we are going to have to unite happily behind one of them.
Dissing either candidate is one way to ensure hurt feelings that remain and cost the winning Dem
candidate support. It could be critical.
We saw a divided Dem Party in '68 and it cost the election.

I ordinarily hate stores where the plot is driven exclusively by stupidity, but that's never really bothered me about Gump because (1) it takes the concept beyond the breaking point to farce, and (2) Hanks did a good job of portraying simple as something other than stupid. There are stupid people in the movie, but I' not sure Gump is one of them.

Y'all ain't very old, is you, boy?

And if you're "tough" enough to realize that drug addiction is a disease that requires treatment, and that 40-50yr jail terms for NON-VIOLENT "crimes" are "cruel and unusual punishment", especially when the likes of Rush Limbaugh get NOTHING, then I believe you're tough-hearted.

I just got to this post about Obama's website with the extensive "issues" section and chuckled as I recalled Craig Crawford's comment about its being an "internet data dump" which bears little relation to his speeches. It would be nice if Obama could actually expound on some of those issues to show that he actually knows what's on his site.
