GravatarYou got it, big guy!

GravatarLovely, viable, and immensely popular.  Don't touch it, you moron!

GravatarA,

You would be amazed at the degree to which the lie that SS won't be around much longer has penetrated the American public, esp. the 30 and 40 year olds. Even with liberals who follow politics. It's just amazing.

Now, all of you kids, get off of my lawn!

GravatarSittenpretty,

If you are still here: that discussion the other night with Naomi Wolf reminded me of trying to talk to a teenager. She seemed so sure of herself and she was dead wrong about so many things. I tried to gently guide her into a couple of things that would help: she missed them.

Oh well . . . What do us old people know anyway? Youngsters have a monopoly on the truth. (I did when I was that age)

GravatarHecate,

I love how we cannot even EVER CONSIDER removing the cap on earnings subject to Social Security Taxes. That would make the system solvent forever and very very very few would ever even notice the increase in taxes.

He is doing to well! Was off to the U of Md. football game with his rents this afternoon. We're having brunch tomorrow afternoon before they take him to a concert for toddlers! He really loves jumping in the Autumn leaves, which, Goddess knows, I have in abundance!

How's my future granddaughter in law?

DWD,

I agree with you completely! It's insane that we only tax the first, what, $90,000? Why not the first $300,000? That would keep the program solvent into the forseeable future and people in that bracket can well afford it. IMHO.

Gravatarspinoza is not a treasure. He is to be damned.

Gravatarmer has mail sooooooooooooooooon

GravatarWhy are you always talking about taxing the middle millionares????

GravatarObama's obviously getting desperate. He's not going to win the early primaries, and probably won't even come close in the later, bigger primaries.

Which is fine by me. Each passing day reveals what an empty fucking suit he is, and his embrace of the anti-gay fundamentalist crowd was really the nail in the coffin for me...

GravatarBut, sittenpretty, enthusiasm must be tempered with reason. All I was suggesting was that they: 1. Have something prepared to give people to let them know what you are trying to do and how they can help. 2. Someone collecting names and contact information so that you can organize them in the future. 3 Establish some sort of umbrella organization to coordinate the efforts of local and state and national groups. (SNCC if you old enough to remember them)

That is not criticism and those things are necessary.

And thanks everyone. I love my friends here. I just wonder why people are so hateful at times. I always try not to be. (And if you ever think I am, please let me know for the last thing I want to do - honestly. I love everyone here and want only good things for each and every one of you. However, I reserve the right to disagree at times. )

GravatarPIck the seedpods and pierce them if they're about to split, then store the seeds unheated in a sealed container - they should be sprightly next Spring.

Gravatarhis embrace of the anti-gay fundamentalist crowd was really the nail in the coffin for me

This weekend's NYT magazine has a really fascinating article on the crack up of the religious right that posits that he has a good chance to pick up some of that vote. He might, if they weren't all closet racists, as well. I think he needs to go be a v. good Senator for a decade, show what he can do, and then think about making another run. But, then, if he's the nominee, I'm going to support him.

Gravatarwhat you say is correct DWD..teh sensible

GravatarObama is trying too hard to please both sides of the coin. Not my kind of Democrat.

GravatarIn a rational world, SS taxes wouldn't start until you hit $90k.

In the original payroll tax structure, only the very rich paid. Repugs have perverted this with their Ayn Randian sobbing (pace Steve Forbes) that the rich get to keep $$$ while others suffer.

GravatarWant to keep Social Security solvent for the infinite future? Raise the cap on employee/employer contributions to $150,000, pegged to inflation. Any salary, deferred compensation, travel, housing, medical treatment, spousal pay, stock options, etc., between 150,000 and $1 mil gets paid at the current rate by both parties. Over $1 mil, its dollar for dollar. See how much CEO pay gets screwed around with then.

Aw, hell, DWD, any community without disagreement is boring.

The catch is to not get angry with each other, even if we disagree about stuff.

I really admire (maybe naively) the old days, say from the FDR days up till Viet Nam, when Democrats and Republicans would fight like cats and dogs in Congress, and toast the birth of each others' grandchildren, play poker together, get drunk together, and generally be friends after hours.

I regret to say that I genuinely hate Bush, Cheney and many others in this administration.

GravatarFrom CNN:

The project will involve disinfecting classrooms, restrooms, cafeterias, hallways, locker rooms, buses and even external areas such as playgrounds and sports fields, said Roger Wagner, superintendent of Pike County schools.

"We're not closing schools because there's been a large number of breakouts, but as a preventive measure," Wagner said.

One Pike County student was diagnosed with in September with MRSA, or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The bacterial strain can be treated with other antibiotics, but without treatment it can be deadly.

One (1) is diagnosed with MRSA two months ago and they are going to disinfect grass at schools that the student has probably never even seen?

Why don't they just go ahead and disinfect the whole county. It probably isn't more than a few hyndred square miles?

GravatarRe: MRSA, from a flyer I just did for a hospital:

These infections are becoming harder to treat. Penicillin and some other antibiotics used to kill bacteria may no longer work against staph germs. These staph germs are resistant to all penicillin-type antibiotics and are called MRSA. Skin infections from MRSA can develop into more serious, even life-threatening, problems such as infections of the heart, blood and bones.

GravatarHecate, it tends to arise in institutional settings--schools, daycares, jails, hospitals.

Yeah, it'sG/Son's daycare that kinda worries me. They're v. good and keep it v. clean. Even before this, they closed down four times a year for disinfecting, but, well a building full of toddlers.

I told Son and DiL to just focus on good general health, good food, enough sleep, lots of affection, exercise in the fresh air. I think those things help keep a little immune system in good working order so that it can fight off nasty bugs but I do still worry.

GravatarAlso from the flyer I did:

How to Protect Against MRSA
and Prevent Spreading

Practice good hygiene. Wash hands, and shower immediately after exercising.

Wash cuts, scrapes and sores with soap and water, then keep them clean and dry. Cover with bandages until healed.

Avoid contact with other peopleÕs cuts or sores and any material that has come in contact with them.

Avoid sharing personal items that come into contact with bare skin including soap, towels and razors.

Use a barrier Ñ towel or clothing Ñ between your skin and shared equipment such as weight-training benches.

Clean and wash sports clothing after each use.

Establish cleaning patterns for frequently touched surfaces and surfaces that might see direct skin-to-skin contact.

GravatarVia Digby:

New rules for Democrats. If you put your home phone number in the phone book or a picture of your kids on a mailer to your supporters, your opponents are perfectly justified in publishing your home address, phone number and kids names circled in red in an attack ad and send it to a bunch of gun-toting, right wing neanderthals. If some freak starts calling your house after getting it, it's your fault for admitting to having children...

This is the new reality for Democrats, I'm afraid. The kids are now "fair game." Why wouldn't they be? The Republicans think nothing of outing CIA agents for political purposes. Why should they care about siccing some nutcase on a kid? As we saw with the Graeme Frost thing, if you advocate for Democratic policies, or you have the temerity to allow your child to participate in civic life in any way, you are asking to be stalked, threatened and harmed by those who oppose you. Get used to it.

Is there some reason every "liberal" blog isn't showcasing, at the top of their page, the address, phone number, and daily schedule of Magalangadingdong and her hatchlings each and every day? Maybe with a little video and some Google maps thrown in? And don't bother me with that "we don't want to sink to their level" bullshit, thanks...

French clay may be effective in fight against MRSA.

Science Daily (10/26)reports, "French clay that kills several kinds of disease-causing bacteria is at the forefront of new research into age-old, nearly forgotten, but surprisingly potent cures." Researchers from Arizona State University, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and the State University of New York-Buffalo discovered that specific minerals found in the clay can be used to fight MRSA. With the aid of a "$440,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health-National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine," the team plans to continue studying the clays healing properties.

"Plenty of clays are already on the market, touted as cures for various ailments, but few have any clinical data to back them up," added Discovery News (10/25, O'Hanlon). Yet, to date, the team has exposed "Salmonella typhimurium, Streptococcus sp., Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas stutzeri" to "different clays, including sterile sand and the French clay used in [the] Ivory Coast, to see how well they killed a broad spectrum of bacteria." USGS researcher David Metge said, "We found that bacterial cultures lost 90 to 99 percent of viability within 24 hours of exposure to the French Agricur[a] clays." He added that the "trick now, of course, is figuring out exactly how the clay is killing the microorganisms."

The sci-fi movie on TCM at 10 sounds interesting.
The Black Hole. (1979) Maximilian Schell. A mad scientist's robot slave ship takes space-probers to where the laws of physics do not exist.

Sadly, it's a lousy film. The script is rotten, the performances stink, and the special effects suck. The robots are particularly lame. Only Roddy McDowall manages to come off as likeable, as the voice of one of the cheezy looking robots.

Speaking of where the laws of physics do no exist, the movie features scenes where humans are happily floating around in a hard vacuum without space suits, and glowing red hot meteors that don't have a reason to glow, since they also are moving in a vacuum.

GravatarI have a nephew who has had several go rounds with MRSA. I have been reading as much as I can about it but still have unanswered questions. Will this infection stay in his system and rear it's ugly head whenever he gets a skin break? If it is in his system can it be sexually transmitted? His outbreaks have always started on a toe- should he toss his shoes? He has been homeless and has no insurance but is recently making some positive progress. He now is employed but still can't afford office visits. They have treated him at the ER- and billed him-$500 which he can't pay. They always recommended follow up with a dermatologist who he can't afford. With his background he cannot get health ins even if he could pay for it and he makes too much money($12 g a year) to qualify for any state assistance. Thus I am searching for ways to help him and answers that might assist hin in getting over this.I was reading about some medicinal honey from New Zealand that sounds like it could help him- anybody know anything about it?

Feds Strike ID Deal Over NY Licenses
By DEVLIN BARRETT, Associated Press Writer

Saturday, October 27, 2007

(10-27) 14:03 PDT WASHINGTON, (AP) --

The Bush administration and New York cut a deal Saturday to create a new generation of super-secure driver's licenses for U.S. citizens, but also allow illegal immigrants to get a version.

New York is the fourth state to reach an agreement on federally approved secure licenses, after Arizona, Vermont and Washington. The issue is pressing for border states, where new and tighter rules are soon to go into effect for crossings.

GravatarSocial Security should not be an issue for any Democrat.

They should treat it as a done deal and walk away.

Iran and the ongoing bloodletting for the ego of El Fucktardo are the issues. Medical care one of the issues.

Restoring Habeus Corpus and punishing the living shit out of any unitiary executive collaborator (I'm talking about the organized crime corporations like AT&T and Verizon here) should be the the issues.

NOT Social Security. It is a done deal.

Gravatar"This game ain't basketball anymore, it's entertainment," Wallace said. "It's starting to get like the WWF. There ain't no real wrestling anymore either. It's all fake."

When Forbes made his most serious run for president I calculated that the tax reduction that he would personally get from a flat tax would probably pay for the presidential campaign.

Hopefully the county attorney is going to do something about it.

Virginia State Senate Race Heats Up posted 5:25 pm Fri October 26, 2007 -

The Fairfax County Commonwealth's Attorney is looking into whether a recent campaign flyer from state Sen. Jeanemarie Devolites Davis (R-Fairfax) went too far.

The flyer contains the home address and phone number for her opponent, Democrat Chap Peterson, and his kids' names.

Peterson held a news conference with Commonwealth Attorney Ray Morrough and a Fairfax County police officer, accusing Devolites Davis of endangering his family.

"My family's safety is paramount to me. The thought that our personal information would be disclosed to 60,000 strangers and done so in an attack ad meant to incite hatred of me is shocking," said Peterson.

Some Fairfax County voters agreed with Peterson..

GravatarI am very surprised by this...

http://www.dailykos.com/storyonl...10/27/211520/ 27

Today the president’s support among evangelicals, still among his most loyal constituents, has crumbled. Once close to 90 percent, the president’s approval rating among white evangelicals has fallen to a recent low below 45 percent, according to polls by the Pew Research Center. White evangelicals under 30 — the future of the church — were once Bush’s biggest fans; now they are less supportive than their elders. And the dissatisfaction extends beyond Bush. For the first time in many years, white evangelical identification with the Republican Party has dipped below 50 percent, with the sharpest falloff again among the young, according to John C. Green, a senior fellow at Pew and an expert on religion and politics. (The defectors by and large say they’ve become independents, not Democrats, according to the polls.)

Some claim the falloff in support for Bush reflects the unrealistic expectations pumped up by conservative Christian leaders. But no one denies the war is a factor. Christianity Today, the evangelical journal, has even posed the question of whether evangelicals should "repent" for their swift support of invading Iraq.

"Even in evangelical circles, we are tired of the war, tired of the body bags," the Rev. David Welsh, who took over late last year as senior pastor of Wichita’s large Central Christian Church, told me. "I think it is to the point where they are saying: ‘O.K., we have done as much good as we can. Now let’s just get out of there.’ "

He really, really needs to see the professionals for this kind of thing. Home remedies aren't going to cut it.

Gravatarman the rockies are pathetic.

GravatarOnly got my digital camera in May of 2006.
Buckeye, Dealer of Rare Coins

GravatarEvening, everyone.

Not if it's Kodak film.

Gravatarman the rockies are pathetic.
euphronius

I went to Glacier and Yellowstone in the last two years and found them quite inspiring!

To each his own....

GravatarBoston is the best team in baseball this year. They deserve to win the Series.

Gravatar5-0

Gravatarrepeatedly dodged opportunities to reveal her thinking about the best way to strengthen Social Security.
No, for all we know Obama means lifting the cap on the marginal tax rate.

GravatarDoes the pitcher hit in Japan?

GravatarThis might be a good time to end the inning. Just sayin'.

Gravatarman the rockies are pathetic.

Gravatarthey should just end the series now

GravatarDidn't mean to intrude on the conversation here tho. Sorry about that(really).
lovepat

You are not intruding. Lots of people here wish they could provide useful help but sometimes there are few good answers.

Gravatarman the rockies are pathetic.
euphronius

they forgot to put in jeebus.

GravatarNo, for all we know...

ZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Gravatar21-2 scoring so far in the Series. Colorado is getting thumped.

Gravatarsteny hoyer. he's tall.
charley

and he has good hair. Now we know why he is majority leader.
____league

he's actually much more handsome in person. i think most women would agree, he's a silver fox.

it wouldn't have been appropriate given the context, but i wanted to walk up to him say "you punks aren't going to cave on this fisa deal are you?" but i think we already know the answer to that.

if not, gary will clue us in.

Gravatarthey forgot to put in jeebus.
1Watt, Hermit

Jeebus plays for the Avalanche...

GravatarAll true fans should want to see 7 games.

GravatarProve Obama's positions on Social Security aren't to the left of Hillary.

GravatarToday the president’s support among evangelicals, still among his most loyal constituents, has crumbled.

They are finally starting to notice that he has not done anything for them either. (Except maybe hasten the end of the world which some of them see as a very good thing.)

GravatarYou prove Obama is not actually an extraterrestrial.

GravatarThank you JR. He has been to the ER Doctors 3x, the health dept and three private Dr. visits. He has been on a bunch of different classes of drugs- clindamycin being the one he is on now- 14 days/$190. It clears up for a month or two then starts up again- a bit worse each time. I just wonder if this is gonna be a chronic situation as the standard protocol for avoiding infection doesn't seem to be working for him. I will keep looking for answers. I appreciate your responses.

Gravatar*stabs Kodak again for discontinuing VPS*
JR, not currently banned

that was good film.

kodak did make good film.

fuji is much more consistent. easier.

there will always be Tri-X

GravatarSheets.

GravatarMe must preserve Social Security!

Gravatarmotherfuckers trying to show they're "serious" to David "Fred Thompson's health care plan is the greatest thing since my cock ring" Broder

GravatarMore and more every day I think Obama is a made man for the evil ones.

GravatarOnce it gets in there all the serious pundits spend their days figuring out how best to starve granny. It's a lovely program. It's fine.

Yeah, it's real smart to have a punitive wealth transfer from the young and struggling to the old and wealthy (no means testing!) so that they can go piss it away at some casino. God forbid, too, that we should consider uncapping the income limit on it. Nothing like a good old regressive tax to further benefit the wealthy.

How you can consider that a "lovely program" other than out of some reactionary fear of Republican shenanigans is beyond me. Just because they want to gut it doesn't mean it's a good program. The concept is sound, the way that it works as an entitlement is completely wrong. Same for Medicare and particularly the drug benefit.

GravatarI'd be glad to put Econ 102 into a forced labor camp or even sell his organs so that I could continue to piss it all away at an Indian casino. And I'm only 28.

GravatarVery intelligent reply, Me. I'm sorry you're not educated about fiscal issues.

GravatarYou mean you're sorry that I don't take you seriously. You don't give a shit whether I understand economics or not. Right?

GravatarI could care less about your opinion of me, and if you're unable to understand the fiscal issues of greatest import, that has nothing to do with me. It is your own shortcoming.

Good night.

GravatarI can just see your fat ass bouncing from side to side as you stomp off in a huff.

Anyway, if this is so important to you, what the fuck are you doing here with someone who gives not a shit for you on a completely dead thread in the middle of the night?

GravatarEven more proof that Obama is taking campaign adivce from Russert, Broder, and Matthews: gotta prove he's serious by scariing everyone about Social Security.
