The McCain caravan to get coffee has been bugging me. The vehicles
shown in the video of McCain walking out of Safeway (where the
Starbucks is located) are Suburbans. Assuming all the vehicles are
Suburbans, that average 16 mpg, that's a lot of gas for a coffee run.
It's approximately 10 miles from the McCain residence, so those nine
vehicles collectively drove 180 miles round trip. That's 11.25 gallons
of gas used @ 3.89=$43.76 for the gas to go get coffee.
Just buy an espresso maker, already. They have the staff to make the drinks.

I still don't understand it and think it's kind of a slap in the face for a guy who bills himself on change to reject bringing the first woman VP into the White House with him. At the same time, he's also sinking her chance to eventually run for Pres again. It would have sent a lot better message: that the liberal coalition of minorities-- for example working class women and working class racial minorities-- is not divided, and if one is down, the other will reach over to help them up.
In my honest opinion, we should not see Hillary just as an individual because that is not simply what she is, and that is not the context. This is about the history of the whole nation, and what message we send. If Hillary is good enough (and by all measures, she was-- remember, she was the other power-slugger in the primary, as far as popularity and money-raising ability, besides Obama) then she should have been picked. Biden is by comparison a second-stringer. Arguably, the field of candidates running against her shouldn't have even demonstrated so much full-hearted competition (including from Obama) because Hillary was "next in line" out of all the people who wanted to be President.
Now Obama is leaving her stuck in the mud more or less just because of some things she said or the media said about her. The stuff about paying her debts doesn't count as sticking up for her (it's a token move, not meaningful political support), and trying to trade off the convention to get some money to pay her debts actually just makes Hillary look bad.

Democratic debate dealing with issues relevant to working men and women would be asked about the infamous bankruptcy bill signed two years earlier by President George W. Bush.
This wasn't the first time Congress had passed this shameful act. Bill Clinton vetoed it twice in the 90's, so we know where he stands. The credit industry, ever relentless, kept coming back, confidant they had the number of elected officials necessary to do their bidding. They did, and Joe Biden was always one of them.

And the case for Hillary being "next in line" was this: she had comparable popularity to Obama, and she was older and more experienced (especially having been much closer to the White House for eight years, which the media chauvinistically ignored (abetted by the bloggers) simply because she was the First Lady-- but she was an educated, invloved, insider First Lady, not just a celebrity or a mantlepiece). Skipping her for Obama possibly ruins her chance to to run and therefore leaves our long-term field of Presidential candidates with less total talent for the future.
Even I don't think that argument necessarily wins. Obama seems to have turned out to be significantly more popular. But I'm worried by what I see as signs that the Republicans wanted us to pick Obama (the corrupt mainstream media just didn't go after him hard like they went after Hillary during the primary). That support for Hillary from Rush Limbaugh? A red herring. You really think that guy is dumb enough to tell us who he actually wants us to pick? Remember, Rush Limbaugh is the guy who has been excoriating Hillary constantly-- until she became a Democratic Presidential candidate.
And, we should have had other Presidential material available. Kennedy's son, who should have been a sure-shot for us to win the Presidency a couple of times, once he was persuaded to turn to politics, was killed in a mysterious plane crash. And Eliot Spitzer was exposed in an affair, just when it looked like only Republicans were getting caught doing that (again and again) since after Bill Clinton. But, now we don't have these people, so the loss of Hillary hits harder. If John McCain squeaks by Obama, all we're going to be left with is regret over what our powerhouse ticket (Obama and Hillary) could have been like, and the cold consolation that a bunch of sleazy mainstream media writers had speculated that the White House wasn't big enough for Hill, Bill, and Obama.
A lot of things we're doing now just seem to fly in the face of what should be basic smarts, basic considerations, and standard methods of doing things for us.
I really feel like we're the geeks in high school who are getting directed to the non-existant pool on the roof by the Republicans.

I trust the Brit press more than ours - slightly...
Diehard Hillary Clinton supporters who still refuse to accept that the nomination race is over have given themselves a name, Pumas, and a logo that the in-house lawyers at the Puma sportswear brand might like to take a look at. In the network of blogs where the name originated, it stood for "Party Unity, My Ass!" - a defiant shout of opposition to the notion that they should fall silent in order to speed the healing of Democratic wounds. Now that the Pumas have formed their own fundraising committee, however, they seem to have had a change of heart. According to their site, Pumapac.org, Puma stands for "People United Means Action", an exactly opposite sentiment, prompting the thought that if they don't iron out such inconsistencies in their message very soon indeed, there's a serious chance that Clinton might not be the next president.
"What it Takes", by Richard Ben Cramer, is about the 1988 primary campaigns of both parties. Good background info on all considered (exceptions of Al Gore & Jesse Jackson- which Cramer explains in preface).
A good place to get a start on knowing who Biden was. Highly recommend the book to anyone interested in politics, period.

Or just take their own words for it:
Our Mission Statement
Puma PAC is the VOICE OF THE VOTERS in the Democratic Party -- not of special interest groups, not of corporations, not of politicians. We are motivated by the growing distance between the party leadership and every-day, average voters. It is the divisive disdain for VOTERS, practiced by the leadership and amplified by the media and some politicians, that has brought the Democratic Party to the brink of ANOTHER GENERAL ELECTION LOSS and the irrelevancy of the Democratic Party altogether.
Puma PAC's mission is to make sure that EVERY VOTE IS COUNTED EVERY TIME, that every good Democratic candidate gets FAIR TREATMENT by the Party, and that EVERY DEMOCRATIC VOTER matters to the Party. We are the voters. It is our RESPONSIBILITY to guide the nation.
Our aim is to be the largest and most organized group of Democratic voters in American history. EVERY SINGLE Democrat in America should be a member of Puma PAC. As individual members, we work every single day taking political actions across the nation that affect our local AND national government. We are reinventing the idea that every single adult American can and should be an active CITIZEN who Participates in our democracy.

Another funny thing about this guy's life is there are stories out there that make it sound like something happened to his wife that made her go kind of nuts after he married her or sometime before they died.
You hear a lot of things about her that make it sound real natural that he was impressed with her class and wanted to marry her. But there was some story about them in Rolling Stone (I think) after they died that claimed that she would get into screaming fights with him in which she would call him a "faggot" and that she would do things like make them late going places because she would change her mind three time about what color she wanted her toenails to be after the beautician had already put the nailpolish on.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Before Ron Fournier returned to The Associated Press in March 2007, the veteran political reporter had another professional suitor: John McCain's presidential campaign.
In October 2006, the McCain team approached Fournier about joining the fledgling operation, according to a source with knowledge of the talks. In the months that followed, said a source, Fournier spoke about the job possibility with members of McCain's inner circle, including political aides Mark Salter, John Weaver and Rick Davis.
Salter, who remains a top McCain adviser, said in an e-mail to Politico that Fournier was considered for “a senior advisory role” in communications.
“He did us the courtesy of considering the offer before politely declining it,” Salter said.
He added that Fournier was an attractive target because of his knowledge about the political process, not because of his ideological or partisan leanings. Salter says he still does not know what, if any, those are.
Fournier has taken lumps in the left-leaning blogosphere in recent weeks, following the disclosure of a friendly e-mail exchange with Karl Rove from 2004. This was followed by an analysis of his work by Media Matters, a watchdog group that critiques news coverage from a liberal perspective. The group alleged that the influential Washington bureau chief has revealed a pro-McCain bias.
At the time of his dealings with McCain, Fournier was not with the wire service, his home for most of his career. Instead, he was editor-in-chief of a new — now-shuttered — political website Hotsoup.com
Co-founded with such principals as Matthew Dowd, chief strategist for the Bush-Cheney 2004 campaign, and Joe Lockhart, Bill Clinton’s former press secretary, the bipartisan site was established to discuss and debate hot-button issues with a cast of boldfaced names in politics and pop culture. The hope was that politically savvy readers would gravitate to the site’s social networking functions.
But Hotsoup never took flight, and Fournier returned to the AP as online political editor. (Disclosure: Fournier also spoke with Politico about potential employment before rejoining the AP.)
It was funnier when we didn't know for sure Biden was the VP choice. Biden's first wife died in a car crash with their infant daughter:
In 1966, while in law school, Biden married Neilia Hunter. They had three children, Joseph R. "Beau" Biden III, Robert Hunter, and Naomi. His wife and infant daughter died in a car accident shortly after he was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1972. His two young sons, Beau and Hunter, were seriously injured in the accident, but both eventually made full recoveries.
Metalepsis (from Greek Μετάληψις is a figure of speech in which one thing is referenced by something else which is only remotely associated with it. Often the association works through a different figure of speech, or through a chain of cause and effect. Often metalepsis refers to the combination of several figures of speech into an altogether new one. Those base figures of speech can be literary references, resulting in a sophisticated form of allusion.
A synonym for metalepsis is transumption, derived from the Latin transsumptio invented by Quintilian as an equivalent for the Greek.
Robin Leach said McCain "tends to answer questions very rapidly without thinking of the correct answers. ... I would call it honest confusion."
Wildly firing off incorrect answers when under moderate pressure. Hot damn Robin, that's just what voters should look for: a guy with his glib, jittery fingers wrapped around the nuclear trigger who is easily -- yet honestly! -- confused.
One of the very first things President Obama and the fillibuster-proof Dem congress have to do is to introduce, fight for, and pass legislation smashing the media monopolies.
I think the print media is imploding of its own accord.
It's really sad to see the print edition of the Kronk these days. Most times it barely breaks a total of 40 pages, and the large display ads are the sort of thing you used to see in the back pages of the Enquirer.
The publishers and their genius "consultants" know absolutely nothing about how to appeal to their actual readers. So they get sandbagged by the fact that their online edition gets flooded with comments from hardcore moronic brownshirt fucks and think that's their readership. This is in San Francisco, kids. So the Kronk (which always tilted right anyway) now runs big screaming headlines about the evils of illegal immigration and how the homeless should be rounded up and gassed.
why would a woman who is white hot about no woman on the ticket go vote for a party and a man who says life begins at conception and that means we need to ban abortions.
-----------------
Because they don't feel there is anything to lose. They think that supporting a party that stabs them in the back is worse than supporting a party that stabs them in the front. They think the abortion issue is a sockpuppet that is being waved at them to keep them in line, and they resent it. I'm serious, I think this might be a real problem if Obama doesn't find a way to address this fast.
Sunday at the Ranch With John
McCain works his 'base' at a barbecue
By Holly Bailey | Newsweek Web Exclusive http://www.newsweek.com/id/11807...6?
tid=relatedcl
There are worse ways to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon than swinging lazily back and forth on a tire swing strung up under a massive sycamore tree in a quiet Arizona canyon, the sound of a gushing stream nearby. Almost grazing the ground and hung on rope that looked to have been tied and retied again over the years, the swing belonged to John McCain, who stood several dozen yards away, carefully monitoring giant slabs of pork ribs on a smoking grill.
It was an idyllic scene, and one that might have made the Democratic contenders envious. As Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama fight it out for their party's presidential nomination, campaigning well into the night, McCain has been lying low. On Friday the all-but-certain Republican presidential nominee took a break from the campaign trail in Texas and flew to his weekend cabin outside Sedona, Ariz., about two hours north of Phoenix...
The campaign booked the senator's aides and reporters into one of the only big hotels in town: the Enchantment Resort, a five-star hotel nestled so far back in the picturesque red rock canyons of Sedona that most in the group found that their cell phones were out of range. To cope with the stress of being incommunicado, people booked massages at the hotel spa and went on hikes, including one on which an instructor sought to help participants unblock their "inner chi." "Let me tell you, I've got a lot of chi today," joked Steve Duprey, a close friend of McCain's from New Hampshire who has been traveling with the campaign. Others played golf, went swimming or simply explored the hotel compound. "I haven't walked this much in eight months," one campaign regular confessed. Perhaps this scene gives some insight into why McCain jokingly refers to the media as his base.
Biden to Abu Gonzalez at his confirmation hearings: "I like you. You're the real deal." And he voted for the Iraq War resolution. Not stellar judgment.
In all honesty, I am not really familiar with their complaints, but if the senior leadership acknowledges and deals constructively with their issues, which should be a given in any actually democratic organization, then I suspect the problems go away.
On the other hand, if the senior leadership ignores the issues or disses those who have those issues, then I think it is perfectly appropriate to walk away and let the senior leadership reap what they have sown.
One cannot have it both ways and I don't think it's fair to say that those who issues are not constructively addressed by the party are somehow responsible for the disaster that the OTHER party is. Too close to extortion for me. But then, I was an abused child, so all manner of emotional manipulations don't work for me.
We're focused on winning this damn election, not conducting a love in for the Democratic Party. Don't get me wrong, Hillary has many admirable traits & has been incredibly abused by the MCM. I'm really having trouble getting excited about a Democratic ticket. Used to be I'd always vote Democrat. But I wonder if they can or even want to make a difference anymore.
Obama says he's all about "change". But he's chosen for running mate a man that's been in the US Senate longer than I've been alive. Does he really feel confident in his ability to run this country?
Or is this just another W/Cheney ticket, where you've got a young personality handpicked by the party elite to run and an older guy who's going to make the real decisions?
And then there's McCain, who will probably have a stroke within a month of being inaugurated. Then we'll get the first Mormon president. At least he is younger than McCain and not older.
I don't know that giving away cabinet appointments is the right thing to do. It might simply be OK to have the senior leadership acknowledge that their complaints are valid and that the leadership intends to fix the problem. Often, people simply want to be heard and have others acknowledge their grievances, which is only fair.
There are thousands of people there in Springfield!
I don't think they are morons. Their strategy makes sense. If their nominal party doesn't support their values, then yes, by all means, they should put their votes elsewhere. There is no other way to make the powers-that-be take them seriously.
Are you talking about the hard-core PUMA's? Because if that's who you're talking about I'm not in the mood to pander to a very, very small minority who are not taking the primary elections very well.
If you're really concerned about women's issues, you don't vote for McCain.
So yes, the obama/biden campaign should address the fact that sexism is alive and well and should be faced and fought. But I'm having trouble seeing that the PUMA's are really doing this for women's rights.
And I have a slightly different angle to the PUMAs, however few they might be. Some of them are probably Republicans who might have voted for Hillary but will not vote for a generic Democrat. Some are Democratic women.
One of those commented on my blog some time ago and made a point somewhat similar to the third-party point: That both parties are so bad (in this case for women) that the only alternative is to sign out. The idea is that the Democratic party will then realize it needs the vote of women and will start listening to women and so on. So at least she wasn't selling young women's reproductive rights out (I think she's in her twenties herself). She felt that nothing would ever change without such drastic action, that the Republicans would keep slowly suffocating reproductive rights and the Democrats would go on kissing the hems of the religious wingnuts.
Alternatively, I think the two parties are functionally the same (Andrew Bacevich makes a fine argument for that point, without advocating the creation of any third parties.). But abandoning the system altogether is only viable if you then truly abandon the system, and stop:
a) mentioning, loudly, how you're really leaving now, and this time you mean it!
b) stop complaining about the system because you gave up on it and went your merry way. There is actually a world beyond political obsession and national politics. My take is: you either accept the system as it is, and work to change it, realizing you have little power to do so, but it's better than accepting a decaying and corrupt status quo.
Or you walk away from it, because you realize it ain't all there is. Me, I'm working on doing the latter. Still workin' on it.....
NTodd, 198 Tees In The Woods
I really don't see that, NTodd. If I withdraw from a system I cannot (for whatever reason) support, I don't effect change in that system. The change is in me.
The system goes on it's merry way, and carries out whatever process it was doing when I left. It doesn't chase me down and promise to change if I'll just come back. If it fails, it was going to fail anyway. If it continues, it was going to continue without me.
Following the example of the Desert Fathers, if I withdraw, it is for my own salvation, not the salvation of society (or any larger system). I can't save that system. I can only (ultimately) save me. As Candide said: We must tend our own gardens.
If everyone on the left sat out elections, the pols would be simply go where the votes were, i.e. further right.
I'm not convinced of that. People on the right aren't all of a sudden going to embrace Dems instead of sticking with the rightwing pols that they already support. The Dems will be left in the wilderness, particularly since they know that the country essentially is liberal in terms of values and policies. And when the left bloc starts voting for real left parties and pols, the equation shifts dramatically.
Interrupting status quo behavior of voters and pols is as key as IRV and other electoral reform. Given that the majority party generally loses seats in mid-term elections, 2010 might not be a bad place to put a stake in the ground, provided intentions and goals are announced clearly and early, and escalating steps are taken to ratchet pressure on the Dem Congress and WH.
I really don't see that, NTodd. If I withdraw from a system I cannot (for whatever reason) support, I don't effect change in that system. The change is in me.
Withdrawing support inherently changes the equation and disrupts the system. Again, it's not about you individually withdrawing, it's about a massive collective effort to remove the veneer of legitimacy, financial and political backing, etc, from the party or system.
You don't just do it right out of the gate, either, or do it because you've just given up. Then you're not trying to effect change. But as a tactic it has been used before often to great effect.
There was one scene where he's going on about how she had to learn the value of a dollar.
Let's hope President Obama realizes that won't fly, and the Dem Congress will work with him to change the arrangements.
NTodd, 198 Tees In The Woods
Interesting how that agreement was hammered out just in time for the election. We have to rememeber that the actual Republican date for leaving is never. Anyhow, my guess is that if Obama gets us entirely out sometime during his first term, that will suffice to get him re-elected. I suppose it could hurt him during the midterms, but I somehow don't see too many Republicans running against Democrats on an "out of Iraq now" platform.
Seriously, whom were you expecting that you are so deeply disgusted with Biden?
Biden is not only a corporatist - he is a Company man. He is a Democrat in name only. He will and has sold out any possible position for any combination of influence and power that is possible to acquire - and has been doing so his entire career. In short, he is the archtypical long term Village senator. There's not a dime's worth of difference between Biden and probably 90% of the rest of the Senate. 'Democratic' or 'Republican'.
That is the point. What we now have are two men who are so dedicated to getting along, placating whomever they need to placate in order to achieve whatever agenda has their allegiance, that we do -not- have Democratic Party candidates. We have representatives of the Village, of Our Crowd inside the Beltway, of the perceived wisdom, of consensus politics.... Truthfully, it was probably foolish of me to both hope for someone -other- than Biden. Biden was probably inevitable. Now, in order to elect the Democrats, we shall all have to bite our tongues when we're reminded that some things just have to be this way - we have to understand that there must be a decent consideration for other opinions when the question of unions comes up, or Iraq or civil rights.... and be told to go slowly, not upset things because, after all, there are Supreme Court positions on the line, there are the issues involving illegal occupation of another country that generated profound repression in the name of 'safety' and goodness knows the Corporatist/Company Republicans would be so much worse....
Whom was I expecting? Someone not of the Village. That was, in retrospect, not likely.
The thing that's even more infuriating is this was a written script that she probably had to go along with. I would guess that in real life the situation was quite different.
Not that those shows aren't infuriating, but that was the character she played, it made her very rich. IRL, she was a pretty sharp and ruthless executive, according to an article I read a while back. Desi was the creative producer, she was the executive.
i disagree. it depends on what you mean by 'withdraw.' if one chooses not to pay for tv, or taxes, if one grows all the food needed and barters in the community instead of shopping at corporate stores, that sort of thing, each of those actions can have an impact. small, sure, but it is real.
i find these sorts of discussions funny, for they often lack one singularly important point. which is: increase the number of voters by 3-7%, and you can truly shift tectonic plates. that's usually enough to swing an election, historically. the reason i know 'there is no difference' bw the parties is because i know that dems know this, but take little meaningful action on that knowledge. they are happy with the village just the way it is, and have3 no real interest in populism or helping people.
I don't get to involved in politics (for one thing, it's illegal) but I always pull the donkey lever (well I did when we had voting machines -- mechanical ones that counted the votes -- remember that quaint concept?)
This government has always looked differently from the perspective of a white male with adequate money & that of a person who didn't fit that category -- whether a black really thought slavery was preferable to what a Native American felt about genocide -- well, it probably depends ...(the Cherokee did own slaves, after all - many of the Seminoles were ex-slaves or their descendants)
The problem is that people don't vote out of apathy and disillusionment, not as a tactical choice in a strategic campaign with coordinated, announced goals regarding change. The tactic of boycotting parties or elections is not done in a vacuum, and not just "dropping out of the system." It's part of an escalation throughout which you have submitted your demands vocally to the opponents.
And I should add that the last time we had Dems controlling both houses, there were perhaps even more phony Dems, and the public was quite fed up with their various abuses of power from having been in control for so long. They were ripe to be toppled by the Gingrich/Limbaugh axis. I think that this Democratic mandate will have more legs than that.
try reversing the polarity on the phase circuit transforational matrix!
If you want to build a successful third party on either side of the establishment ones, you need to do it from the ground up. That's all there is to it. Until you get a bunch of city council seats, mayorships, and state legislative seats, you have little business meddling in national-level politics, and none getting involved in the presidential race.
Word. Plus it makes your local community a better place to live, a sort of haven even if you take it far enough.
Do YOU have draft-aged kids?????
i confess to going back and forth on this one. people are often deeply stupid, and lazy, and the culture of consumerism and fear have done horrible things to american intellectualism on average. so while i agree, it's a great evil to send poor kids off to die for imperialist wars, there is also the truth that our little Movement has failed, failed, failed, to stop the war or elect truly populist leaders, because we are too few and don't have control over the product that directs most americans' thinking (the SCLM). i'm not a religious person, but i understand the reasons why the ancients thought there was a need for blood sacrifice. too often, nothing else wakes up the sacrificial sheep.
Agreed. but the way to effect change is to bring more people into the system, not drive them out.
They wouldn't be driven out, they'd walk out on their own if the system continues to not function properly, nor the parties follow their will.
That's the point. You don't just up and leave one day on a whim: you do other things that build to that as a last resort. So look at Oregon's voter participation with 2 weeks of vote by mail as an example. More people engaged, and rather progressive politics.
But if you had high participation and somehow the pols didn't do what you wanted year after year, you have to escalate and the biggest threat to them is loss of monies and votes. They can't walk away from a history of "centrist" votes and all of a sudden win over right wingers.
Actually, they are the same thing. I've suggested withdrawing as a bloc as a threat against an established party, and that can take different forms: one is to withdraw en masse from a party, and another is to withdraw from the electoral system as a way to demonstrate resolve and power to said party (or parties).
it would be nice to be able to affect change to the democratic party, and perhaps it is not possible to affect that change by withdrawing from it.
but it is quite possible to not give a shit about the democratic party per say, let it go on just as it has, and still affect change to the democracy at the same time. heck, we disrupted the baath party, and look what happened in iraq.
Indeed. And there are different levels of intervention that you can bring to bear at different times.
Too bad Steverino's gone, but Mark Evanier has a great post about - of all things - "With Six You Get Eggroll."
Schaller: This brings us to the next question, which is, how much do you anticipate that Clinton supporters could be a serious problem for Obama at the Democratic convention? Are these PUMAs [Party Unity My Ass] and Just Say No Deal people a fringe element, and is it just going to be the media paying attention to them because there's a story there but, ultimately, Hillary Clinton and her people are sitting on them? Or could this spin out of control?
Kamarck: Because I was a member of the rules committee, I've been bombarded by these folks for some months now. And there are two or three major groups that send out massive numbers of e-mails each day with bizarre, unsubstantiated rumors in all of them.
I will tell you they feel like Republicans to me. The whole business smells like a Republican front. I've been through intra-party battles, Mondale and Gary Hart and Carter and Kennedy, I was in the middle of those battles and this is not the way Democrats fight each other. And so something's wrong here. Something's weird here. I don't quite believe it. Now if I get to Denver and there's a significant Hillary revolt, I'll have to eat my hat, but I think this is an Internet phenomenon. And it smells to me like a Republican front.
Elaine Kamarck was one of the founders of the New Democrat movement that helped elect Bill Clinton president, and served in the Clinton White House from 1993 to 1997. She was a senior policy advisor for Al Gore's presidential campaign in 2000, and has been a public policy lecturer at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government since 1997.
but sometimes, when the balls were all clustered around the same place and there was nothing else to do, you'd just slam the cue ball into the middle and scatter them to change the layout of the table. we'd usually announce this, saying "i'm gonna send'em for a ride!"
But nothing can be too American for American political parties at convention time. So the notion that "images of a cheering throng" could backfire on the Democrats is pretty remarkable. As a matter of logic, it's hard to see any connection at all between Obama's ability to attract a crowd and the question of whether he has been sufficiently "tested." And yet, it's true. Even though Ronald Reagan might have found it hard to believe that there was something wrong with cheering throngs, Republicans are making an issue of Obama's popularity, and the Democrats have to be careful not to overdo things.
