Obama to Meet With Mormon Leader
By Michael A. Fletcher
President Obama is scheduled to hold an Oval Office meeting Monday with Thomas S. Monson, president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Monson, who has headed the church since last year, will be joined at the afternoon meeting by Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.), himself a Mormon.

Why is a Mormon the Democratic leader of the Senate? Mormons hate women. Oh, yeah, feature, not a bug.

"Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., one of the nation's pre-eminent African-American scholars, was arrested Thursday afternoon at his home by Cambridge police investigating a possible break-in. The incident raised concerns among some Harvard faculty that Gates was a victim of racial profiling.

Police arrived at Gates’s Ware Street home near Harvard Square at 12:44 p.m. to question him. Gates, director of the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research at Harvard, had trouble unlocking his door after it became jammed.

He was booked for disorderly conduct after “exhibiting loud and tumultuous behavior,” according to a police report. Gates accused the investigating officer of being a racist and told him he had "no idea who he was messing with," the report said.

Gates told the officer that he was being targeted because "I'm a black man in America."

Friends of Gates said he was already in his home when police arrived. He showed his driver’s license and Harvard identification card, but was handcuffed and taken into police custody for several hours last Thursday, they said."

GravatarJenna would purposely try to lose her protection by going through red lights or by jumping in her car without telling agents where she was going. As a result, in a total waste of manpower, the Secret Service kept her car under surveillance so agents could follow her.

Reports are Gates showed police his ID, and they didn't believe him. Is that true? Or not? Depends on who you want to believe, at this point.

1) Universal healthcare will alleviate some of that concern, particularly since health costs are the #1 reason for bankruptcy.

Ins. comes through the wife's employer, and they have to allow for a change every year (state law; don't ask). Old ins. co. wants a new option: to raise premiums at will during the term of the 1 year K. Largely because the employees are old (v. 20-somethings) and so cost more.

Obviously single-payer would be too expensive and I'd hate to pay taxes for something I actually need (v. another war, or another bomber, which all good Americans LOVE paying taxes for!).

Well, the police have a dog in this fight. They're going to write a report that justifies their actions, subtly if not grossly.

That report wasn't written by an objective third party with no interest in the outcome, is all I'm saying.

GravatarWhile we're at it, why isn't insulin covered by health insurance?

Sometimes it most certainly is.  Yours isn't?

GravatarSarah Palin: "That Latina woman may be wise, but she doesn't have a rack like I have."

GravatarNeil Cafferty: As the debate over paying for health care reform takes center stage, it seems like the rich could wind up with the heaviest burden. Democrats want to hit the rich with even higher income taxes to pay for the proposed overhaul; along with limiting deductions that wealthy families take for mortgage interest and charity contributions.

Taxing the rich to pay for health insurance would mark a significant difference from how this country has paid for safety net programs. For example, both Social Security and Medicare are funded by payroll taxes that affect all Americans.

It’s estimated a single taxpayer making $450,000 a year would pay $7,100 a year more in taxes, while a family making that much would pay an additional $1,000. Meanwhile — a single taxpayer making $5 million a year would pay $452,000 more in taxes; while a family at that income level would pay $443,000 more.

Seems reasonable to me and I live in an expensive broken state where I already get the living shit taxed out of me.

GravatarIt could just be a trumped-up pack of lies, but it is the official police report of the incident.

MisterX

It probably isn't. Neither is it a carefully objective account by a team of scholars who have reviewed the historic record exhaustively.

It's a police report. They have reasons to put in information that makes them look justified, and leave out "tidbits" that don't. It's not, IOW, Gates' version of events.

Put the two together, you might get close to what "really" happened. But that's what jury trials are for. Since I'm not going to be on that jury (if there ever is one), I have no way of determining the "truth" of this situation. So the police report doesn't really interest me.

That's all.

Beck on Obama: ‘This guy is dangerous!’
On his Fox News show this afternoon, Glenn Beck tried to stir fear and terror about the President of the United States among his right-wing followers. Beck’s guest John Bolton suggested now is the time to “stand up” to Obama because if he loses on health care, he’ll “begin to lose on other issues.” To which, Beck replied:

"I’m telling you – this guy is dangerous. He’s never lost before. He won’t understand it. He won’t understand – look how – he, uh, is like, who are you to question me? I mean, this guy is practically an imperial president now. When he starts to lose and people start to question him and push him back against the wall, he’s not gonna know how to react."

Bolton said he found Beck’s warnings “optimistic” because the America people “will react even more strongly against”

He was detained at the airport, strip searched and told there was a problem.

They demanded that he should give them the phone number he wanted to call.
He gave them a letter.
And they wondered why the Prime Minister's office was on the letterhead.

Six months later, we learn (via AP) that Obama has decided to put off the annual mid-summer budget update from mid-July, when it usually is released, to mid-August. Apparently, as AP suggests, the White House wants to delay the bad news at least until Congress leaves town on its August 7 summer recess.

Another example of books by people who can't write for people who can't read.

GravatarPresident Obama and David Axlerod hosted a conference call with liberal bloggers today on the whole health care issue. You know we're heading for the homestretch in this debate and I thought it was a good idea that the President reached out to the blogs and acknowledged the work that we've done so far. Here's a quick recap of the points he made. Other bloggers will have more details about the call. President Obama wanted to tell us directly what's going on..
He wants the bill to be strong with an excellent public option.
The status quo is unacceptable for Americans as premiums are skyrocketing....doing nothing is defending the indefensible. Opponents are offering up nothing and admit that they are just trying to stop it. he mentioned Jim DeMint and Bill Kristol. Liberal Bloggers have done an excellent job of debunking right wing myths...Bloggers have played and will play a critical role in passing legislation... Record deficits is a myth. He inherited this deficit and it's not an excuse for inaction...
It's important to keep pressure on members of Congress...

"I know the blogs are best at are debunking myths that can slip through a lot of the traditional media outlets," he said. "And that is why you are going to play such an important role in our success in the weeks to come." Making sure that Bloggers have been letting Congress know all about the desperation Americans are feeling and that's critical. And he wants us to keep up the pressure on Congress and the media.
Doesn't want to wait.

He talked for about four minutes and then opened it up for questions. And I was the first one in line. Since the goal of the opposition is to defeat the bill, a key way to do that is by delaying the process. I asked the President to demand that Congress work through August recess if that's their plan.

John Amato: Good afternoon President Obama, thanks for having us on.

President Obama: You bet.

Amato: My question is, now we have these, we'll call them conservative democrats joining with some republicans in wanting to delay the bill and saying that they need more time to go over it and actually read it. My question to you is will you ask Congress to forgo their August recess and work this bill out because while they're taking a vacation, millions of Americans are either losing their health care or are about to go bankrupt because of health care issues.

So if they're going to whine about not having enough time then they should act like real Americans and work during August.

President Obama: Well, here's what I've said. We cannot delay any longer. If people keep on saying"what's the rush? We've been debating this for fifty years. We've been talking about health care reform throughout the campaign. The day after I was elected we started contacting key leaders in Congress about the fact that this was going to be #1 domestic priority. All these committees have been meeting, all the experts have been talking and knows th

which got me thinking. how can the people who don't trust the gov't to run helathcare trust them to regulate it in the private market? inscos have HUGE big dollar lobbies. the more concentrated the power and money, the more option for corruption. and what's the alternative? no regulation? one of the trolls posted here the other day that he could take the insco to court, but isn't it the gov't he's trusting to get him out of a jam there?

GravatarNew moon isn't until tomorrow.

GravatarSaturday I met a very interesting woman - her daughter is an artist and she has travelled all over the world. She told me about driving downtown to have lunch one day. A policeman tapped on her window and asked her if she was there to have lunch at ABC rest't. She said yes and he asked for her drivers license. She asked if she had done something wrong, refused to give it to him, and was allowed to go into the rest't. Laura Bush was there for lunch so they had extra security. Anyway, in Texas you cannot be forced to provide I.D. unless you have done something wrong and that woman knew it and didn't cave! True confession: I'd have forked it over, but I'm a nervous nelly.

GravatarRepugs answer to health care crisis: "Louisiana Care"

Bwahahaha. We all want that.

GravatarTime to get out the hose?

Yesterday, G/Son and I watered for about 3 hours, total, front and back yards. I don't even want to think about my water bill, this quarter.

GravatarLaura Bush was there for lunch so they had extra security.

Who's Laura Bush? Some actress?

GravatarWhy don't you ask Shona Holmes who was left to die in Canada before being saved in the good ol' USA!.

It's true! I live in Canada, and there are people line up outside hospitals, these huge long lines, just dying, right there on the sidewalk, left and right.

I was amazed when I went to the states, and no one ever died because they couldn't afford health care.

GravatarRepugs answer to health care crisis: "Louisiana Care"

That was their answer to the mortgage crisis and now more American's homes are underwater.

GravatarWiki:

Under the Soviet government people benefited from some social liberalization. Girls were given an adequate, equal education and women had equal rights in employment,[8] improving lives for women and families. Stalinist development also contributed to advances in health care, which significantly increased the lifespan and quality of life of the typical Soviet citizen.[8] Stalin's policies granted the Soviet people universal access to healthcare and education, effectively creating the first generation free from the fear of typhus, cholera, and malaria.[63] The occurrences of these diseases dropped to record low numbers, increasing life spans by decades.[63]

Now, we can't have that.

GravatarSo I was talking to my ex tonight - he voted for Obama, considers himself fairly liberal, and has no health insurance as he's self employed and he always had it through me - about health care.

I said single payer and taking the profit out of medicine was the answer and he said but we are founded on capitalism and that will mess with that.

I noted that education was provided and that didn't threaten the fabric of our capitalistic society.

He said well if we start with health care, what's next. He thinks doctors should be able to make as much money as they can.

I also pointed out that the best doctors and the best health care is found at teaching hospitals (John Hopkins, MD Anderson, etc.) and those doctors are salaried, not paid by piece work, and he just was like, still . . .

You have to wonder how ingrained this fear of "universal" health care is even with people who think it's wrong that there are those who go without treatment when they need it.

GravatarIntegral: I wonder if that is some sort of instinctive respect for doctors at work there... that what they do is a lot more difficult than what the rest of us do, so they *should* make as much as they can.

Although around here most all the docs are regarded as quacks, their mistakes are never forgotten... drawback #2 of small-town practice.

GravatarYou have to wonder how ingrained this fear of "universal" health care is even with people who think it's wrong that there are those who go without treatment when they need it.

Well Republicans have spent decades making "liberal" and "government" dirty words and the Dems have spent the same decades running away from those terms as if they had typhus, so it's not really all that surprising.

GravatarI think you're partly right Nick. I also think there's some deeply ingrained idea that doctors should be rich for all that schooling and responsibility. The whole idea that people ought to be able to make obscene amounts of money has become one of the unalienable rights, it seems. . .

GravatarWhat the fuck does this say about the world we live in????

GravatarAh, the beauty of Republican governance...

"In 2003, researchers at a federal agency proposed a long-term of study of 10,000 drivers to assess the safety risk posed by cellphone use behind the wheel.

They sought the study based on evidence that such multitasking was a serious and growing threat on America’s roadways.

But the agency, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, did not commission such a study — in part, officials say, because of concerns about angering Congress. And senior government officials decided not to make public hundreds of pages of the agency’s research that had led to that recommendation, as well as other draft policies to curtail the use of phones by drivers.

On Tuesday, the full body of research is being made public for the first time by two consumer advocacy groups, which filed a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit for the documents. The Center for Auto Safety and Public Citizen provided a copy to The New York Times, which is publishing the documents on its Web site."

I can't remember what made me think of it, but there was a sitcom actor who got it into his contract that he would always be the highest paid actor on the show, so when the break out star became the biggest thing since sliced bread, this actor got a raise every time break out star did, plus a dollar. I think it might've been Tom Bosley and The Fonz.

GravatarI said single payer and taking the profit out of medicine was the answer and he said but we are founded on capitalism and that will mess with that.

Explain to him that medical care/insurance is not a true example of capitalism. It is not true supply and demand because the actual consumer, your husband, doesn't get to make the decision and select his plan/company. YOUR EMPLOYER did it for him. So not only did you not get to pick it for your family as the employed, but as the lowly other adult of the family, he's thrice-removed from the consumer choice, he got to choose diddly squat! We are totally at the merci of the employers. If the Big Boss doesn't like Kaiser, even though it is cheaper and more focused on prevention and actual health rather than profits, then the employees don't get Kaiser. Capitalism may work ok, although I'd argue it provides for overconsumption, of things such as patio umbrellas and egg rolls and iPhones. It doesn't work for essential services where there is zero elasticity of demand: electricity, potable water, health care.

That I couldn't tell you since he doesn't do anything for me and I've probably watched 5 total minutes of American Idol in all the time it's been on. He's the emcee. They've undoubtedly done studies (they study everything) to see what the audience thinks of him and feel that, were he to be replaced by a cheaper new emcee, it might cost them a point or two in the ratings. In which case, he's worth it to them.
