Way off topic.
"In an interview yesterday, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said “that the United States still has trouble dealing with race because of a national ‘birth defect’ that denied black Americans the opportunities given to whites at the country’s very founding.” “That particular birth defect makes it hard for us to confront it, hard for us to talk about it, and hard for us to realize that it has continuing relevance for who we are today,” said Rice."

More than three dozen Democratic congressional candidates banded together yesterday to promise that, if elected, they will push for legislation calling for an immediate drawdown of troops in Iraq that would leave only a security force in place to guard the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.

The goal was to turn Iraq into a gleaming bastion of the new American imperialism, a giant sucking maw for their patronage machine, a free-for-all piggy bank for various nefarious schemes, a massive oil reserve for the political manipulation of markets, and a jingoistic motivation to keep unintelligent people rallying around the retarded chimp they installed to ostensibly run the country.
I don't know if it occurred to them that they might utterly destroy Iraq and still not achieve all those goals, but I guess they didn't care much. They got a lot of what they were after anyway. I still say they didn't just set out to destroy the country for the purpose of promoting endless warfare.

I'm so worried about what's hapenin' today, in the middle east, you know
And I'm worried about the baggage retrieval system they've got at Heathrow
I'm so worried about the fashions today, I don't think they're good for your feet
And I'm so worried about the shows on TV that sometimes they want to repeat
...
I'm worried about whether I ought to have stopped
And I'm worried about, it's the sort of thing I ought to know
And I'm worried about the baggage retrieval system they've got at Heathrow
I'm so worried about whether I should have stopped then
I'm so worried that I'm driving everyone 'round the bend
I'm worried about the baggage retrieval system they've got at Heathrow

Did you ever notice that in those SF programs with parallel or alternate universes, "ours" is always the best alternative? Just once I'd like to see an episode of Stargate or Star Trek or what have you where "our" protagonists go to the alterna-verse and discover things are really just great there, not an illusion, not a trick, things are just really better off there and then you have to go home.

That Surge worked like a motherfucker for Al Sadr. Gave him time to rearm his troops, fortify his positions and come up with a two pronged attack.
That's a complete misread of what happened. Al Sadr stuck by the ceasefire even while his people were systematically being raided, rounded up or killed by security forces and their puppet militias. This was not initiated by Al Sadr. He is responding to being attacked.

When these idiots come out in formation and decide to fight a conventional style battle, they can't win.

The problem with that is the protagonists would never want to go home, thus killing the show.
