GravatarSt. McCain, Patron Saint of Wiretaps:

Republican presidential candidate John McCain has condemned the influence of "special interest lobbyists," yet dozens of lobbyists have political and financial ties to his presidential campaign — particularly from telecommunications companies, an industry he helps oversee in the Senate.

Of the 66 current or former lobbyists working for the Arizona senator or raising money for his presidential campaign, 23 have lobbied for telecommunications companies in the past decade, Senate lobbying disclosures show.

GravatarWSJ -- Student Loan market imploding

The wave of student lenders backing out of giving federally backed student loans is growing.

Monday, 33-year old Waco, Texas-based Brazos Higher Education Service Corp Inc. became the latest to suspend making new loans to students for the 2008 academic year. Brazos joins a list of at least 26 other lenders that have stopped providing loans through the FFEL, or Federal Family Education Loan program, due to developments in the credit markets, according to a list compiled by the student financial aid publication Finaid.org.

"We cannot finance anything in this market," says Ellis Tredway, executive vice president of governmental and public affairs at Brazos.

A storm has hit Brazos and its competitors in the past six months, making their core business an unprofitable proposition where an estimated 80% of the business uses the capital markets to obtain funding. In July of last year, the average FFEL loan provided the lender a 1.28% return on its investment. Making one now puts a lender at an immediate loss of 0.6%, according to one investment bank that recently did a study on student lender funding costs.

GravatarWhy isn't everybody scared of Obama's black pastor?

I regret that fear-mongering that subject has come to nothing. Maybe if Hannity tried harder....

GravatarThe more I think about it, the more I love Obama's speech on race.

I think it will, eventually, resonate with the greater good in most souls. It's something that needed to be said, and is long overdue for injection into the public discourse.

Unfortunately, we're in the middle of a political campaign season, and politics tends to focus on the negative. Instead of being viewed as an uplifting prompt for healing in this country, some people try to dissect what he said to the point of picking at a scab.

Even scabs like Glenn Beck and Hannity may not be able to overcome the greater goodness of Obama's message, try as they might. So fuck them, and let's lift the discourse to a place where it needs to go.

Sooner or later we'll figure out that only in the last 100 years or so have we not relied on "natural" sources for energy: solar, animal, wind, running water.

Which make the last 100 or so years the aberration, not the norm. And we're headed back there fast.

GravatarIraq reminds me of the parable of the barren fig tree..

"A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none. Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground? And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it: And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down"

We are now at the throwing around horseshit phase.

Gravatari>Buckeye and Marcellina: yup. There's a compelling case for shifting away from fossil fuels seven ways from Sunday, excluding the environmental consequences of not doing so. A moment's thought suggests that, if the USA consumes 25% of world resources today, that China and India, both aspiring to our standard of living, will by doing so break the system into little pieces unless dramatically enormous finds of new resources are made. The accidental allocation of petroleum to the Middle East, and our dependence thereon, have hugely undesirable consequences. Putin is finding out that controlling the flow switches on the gas mains is every bit as powerful a weapon as the Red Army.

And green energy would even be good for business, as that fat guy Gore has been saying for years.

And, they apparently obtained this all through the beneficence of white people. Black people didn't even have to ask.

GravatarIraq's Oil Ministry said Sunday that it has invited local and international oil companies to bid for contracts including one to develop a natural gas field in a Sunni area in the western part of the country.

The ministry has set a deadline of April 24 for companies to submit detailed plans to help develop the Akkas gas field, located in the former Sunni insurgent stronghold of Anbar province, the ministry said on its Web site.

The Akkas field has estimated reserves of more than 2.15 trillion cubic feet.

Most of the country's vast petroleum wealth is located in the Kurdish north and the Shiite south. Development of the Akkas field could boost the economy in Sunni areas, where support for the government remains tenuous.

Early this year, the ministry said it was negotiating with Royal Dutch Shell PLC to conduct output tests for the field, which has five wells that are ready to be interconnected.

It could produce up to 50 million cubic feet a day as a first stage. That could be increased to 500 million cubic feet a day, which could be pumped through Syria to consumers in Europe.

In a separate tender, the ministry has also invited companies to submit proposals for two oil pipelines linking the Basra oil fields in southern Iraq with Iran's Abadan refinery.

GravatarDead thread:

as has been explained to me withdrawing from a nation is not easy. im sure 99.9 of generals say "GTFO NOA".

The logistics is nothing but a red herring. Soviet troops had little problem leaving Afghan, and the resistance there was much more fierce. It's all about embarrassing images for every empire.

Both BO and HRC would have to remove all commanders who were pro-occupation, including Petraeus. Not an easy task.

2 weeks ago HRC stated categorically that she would eliminate all permanent military bases and that all contractors would be removed as well. Still waiting for Obama to match that.

Look, I don't believe either of them will get us out of this, but all we have is their words and there's no choice but to make a choice. That's what I'm trying to do.

GravatarFive years since the the US began its invasion of Iraq, the world's largest economy is struggling to cope with the cost - estimated to be at least $500 billion and rising.

Two prominent US economists say the Iraq war and the US economy are now inextricably linked.

Joseph Stiglitz, the Nobel-prize winning economist, and Linda Bilmes, authors of "The Three Trillion Dollar War," argue that the Iraq war will cost the US at least $3 trillion and possibly as much as $5 trillion.

Bilmes, a budget and public finance expert at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government, told Al Jazeera that "both in a long-term sense and a short-term sense, the United States is worse off economically speaking because of the war.

"In a long-term sense, we have added already about $800 billion to our national debt as a result of the borrowing and the war," she said.

"In the short-term sense, we are spending $12 billion a month in Iraq alone and that clearly limits the amount of money that we have to provide things like economic stimuli to improve the economy."

At the church I attended on Pâques, the pastor was preaching on Pilgrim's Progress (ugh) and specifically the part where Giant Despair tries to get Pilgrim and Hopeful to commit suicide, and all I could think was how exceedingly rational Giant Despair sounded in his arguments. GravatarEarly this morning, I watched on CNN as a foreign reporter, on the gound in Baghdad was interviewed.

He said troop morale was low (endless war), surge reduced violence in Baghdad but doesn't make that much difference since there's no objective, an exponential number of Iraqis had been killed and 4 or so million displaced, money pit, and so on ad nauseum.

CNN guy breaks in at the end of the interview and says so and so is shaking their head (switch to studio panel). An overweight individual then took the reporter in Iraq to task, said they had been in Iraq once or twice and the local governments are working, blah, blah.

Same shit, different day.

Isn't that what all progressives should want?

GravatarAh, the AIMS people.

Some are using their Eschaton nyms, but somehow "JR" lacks a certain something when you are in the world domination business.

oh well then. they should be explicit about that.

Gravatar"It was here that 600,000 black people, brought from Africa in slave ships, grew into a community of 40 million,"

Were selectively bred and inbred.

"were introduced to Christian salvation,"

And Slavery was explained to them as a Good Thing, but they were not allowed to read it for themselves.

"and reached the greatest levels of freedom and prosperity blacks have ever known."

That we allow the black women. We keep as many black men in locked up as we can. About 3/5ths of the freedom and prosperity of whites though, funny how the math still works out...

Sounds kind of like the sermon I sat through, about how the Easter story is equivalent to surviving a personal crisis.

It prompted me to mildly disagree.

Gravatar... of course, so does "ninja kitty" and "spicegrrl237"...

GravatarWe've got to figure out who can best beat McInsane.

the Democratic primary voters have already figured that one out.

GravatarWhat have Atriots done for public service?

Simply saying "HRC has a better chance" doesn't make it, ya know, true.

I'm using Ethelred. Yes, as in "Unraeda", for the history buffs.
