So thanks for asking.

GravatarSo many reasons to be glad I don't live in LA any more.  Not that what the Transit people did was any more foolish than a lot of places - just that I'm glad I don't have to be involved directly in it any more.

Starting to see a pattern? This from Bay's bro Pat-

GravatarOff topic, but Haloscan ate my comment last night and I was too tired to write it again....

Drove back to the Twin Cities from Iowa yesterday - lots of McCain/Palin signs in cornfields along I-35, including one homemade sign that included the words "Stop abortion and gay marriage." Yeah, right, on your corn farm in the middle of nowhere these are the 2 issues that are ruining your life. Dude, you need to turn off Rush while you're out in the combine.

Oh, and the funniest homemade cornfield sign of the drive? "Deadbeat moms get fat off child support." I think I can write that guy's version of his life story - lol!

GravatarThe real voting fraud.

In Alabama, scores of voters are being labeled as convicted felons on the basis of incorrect lists.

Michigan must restore thousands of names it illegally removed from voter rolls over residency questions, a judge ruled this week.

Tens of thousands of voters could be affected in Wisconsin. Officials there admit that their database is wrong one out of five times when it flags voters, sometimes for data discrepancies as small as a middle initial or a typo in a birth date. When the six members of the state elections board -- all retired judges -- ran their registrations through the system, four were incorrectly rejected because of mismatches.

Gravatar
i don't have tons of faith in the electorate.
jdw

Here's the thing--if folks vote early, which by all acounts is happening, all that voter intimidation and suppression will be for naught.

GravatarFuck, what a nightmare. If you read the article, you'll see it was a sale-and-lease-back deal. If it goes south, MTA will have to pay off the investors (in effect, buy back the stuff they sold-and-leased), which could mean up to 1.2 billion in immediate payments (half MTA's budget). This won't stop with MTA.

Of course, people warned against these deals (who relied on tax law to be of interest to the investors), but public officials didn't feel the need to think ahead. Big surprise.

GravatarLos Angeles MTA board member Richard Katz said: "The feds need to be concerned. If they bailed out the companies, they also need to bail out the public agencies impacted by the companies' actions."
That will be the difference between a McCain and an Obama administration. McCain would cry and is already yelling "socialism", while Obama would say that of course it is only fair to help all the parties affected. Socialism for McCain means that that a policy benefits millions of people; socialism can only be allowed if the benefits are restricted to a few, preferably the already rich. Very good Bill Maher show on the subject last night, led by the incomparable Bernie Sanders.

GravatarFReeper sez God raised up Sarah and Joe the Plumber:

But, because Joe the Plumber, a regular every-day Amereican playing catch with his child on a middle class American street, trying to earn a living for his family, was honest about the impact of the Obama plans from his perspective, and because he did not drink the Obama kool-aid, the MSM, the DNC, and the Obama campaign now consider that hard working, well spoken, young man as the enemy.

Just as Patrick Henry indicated, and that truth still holds today...if we will hold the course, God in Heaven will raise up friends to help fight these battles.

Sarah Palin is one such friend...now, out of obscurity, Joe the Plumber is another.

All thanks for this goes, IMHO, to a merciful God in Heaven! and millions of hard working, partiotic, loyal Americans who will not give up...two of which, Joe and Sarah, have been brought forth before us all to express these sentiments.

The truth is that the left, the Obama campaign, the DNC, and the MSM will lie, fabricate, misquote, commit fruad, beg, borrow, or steal in their effort to slow down what is happening on the ground with the McCain campaign right now, and particularly with the likes of Joe and especially Sarah Palin who is burrowing underneath all of their hype and drawing 25-30,000 people at a time to her rallies and getting the message of hope and conservative values out.

Obama and his ilk know it, they fear it, and they will do anything they can to stop it...but they shall also fail in the attempt. In fact it already is backfiring as Americans all over the country take up Joe's cause.

Where Sarah's concerned, First Dude likes to do his own plumbing. You should keep that in mind.

GravatarWhat's the beef. I was over in Miles City, MT yesterday and picked up the Billings (MT) Gazette, which featured the following story:

Billings Gazette State Bureau

Helena – Republican gubernatorial candidate Roy Brown this week accused Democrats of spreading a false rumor that he is a vegetarian in this meat-loving state.

“I am not and have never been a vegetarian,” Brown Said.

GravatarAnd stop worrying about impeachment and filibuster. The congress is already more heavily dem than the 94 house was republican.

Even short of 60 senate seats, Obama will be able to go on the teevee and call out the obstructionists. It seems like it would also be a good idea to replace Reid with a feistier more effective person. (Clinton would be good.) It's hard to be obstructionist with the other party in the white house.

There will still be the supine media, and the stupid broderites. But Obama really will be limited by commitment and vision, and not be the Republicans on the Hill.

Legally, sure there is. Fraud can never be the result of negligence, it requires a showing of intent. ACORN not only did not intend to commit fraud, it flagged the fraud in most, if not all, cases.

There is no liability here, no criminal conspiracy, no crime. What is here is a lot of sound and fury signifying the desperation of the GOP. Oh, and the corruption of the DOJ. And Obama is dealing very effectively with both, and I expect further investigations (as well as an end to such practices) under an Obama administration.

I wouldn't go that far. It's meant to prevent voter fraud from those who want to vote early and often. Besides, there are age and citizenship restrictions on voting, and registration helps maintain those boundaries.

But like the restrictions on who can get on the ballot, it is easily and often used to determine who is worthy of the franchise.

But, IAC, even if it's still Reid, holding the bully pulpit and both houses with solid majorities (and committees chaired mostly by people from the democratic wing of the party) Obama should be able to do what he wants.

Now, it's a big frickin' mess and may be too much for anyone. But the Republicans are going to be too crushed and scattered to be an effective force of opposition.

One of the allegations against ACORN is that they dump huge stacks of cards on registrars at the 11th hour, making checking of the cards (do you really want to register Mickey Mouse?) impossible.

There are always reasonable as well as physical limits in any system.

Gravatarit's 2008. we should be able to manage voting without preregistering a month in advance.

There are these computer thingies. And ATMs and such seem to do a fine job of keeping fraud to a minimum.

Good riddance.

GravatarPS--the friend you bring has to be a registered voter.

GravatarDr. J that might be the next step.

The oral medication is not working as it should be.

I'll report back in 6 weeks.

GravatarWI has same-day voter registration. You need to prove you've lived in the district for ten days before the election--examples, drivers license, lease, utility bill or other official government mail to the address you say you live at, or finally, even a friend who will attest you live where you say you live.

It's great.
noblejoanie

They obviously don't understand that voter registration is meant to keep certain people from voting.

WI is clearly doing it wrong.

GravatarWhat value was provided by AIG in this deal?

It gave the transit authority an infusion of cash that didn't require taxation. Shit like this happens all the time. Bad policy, more expensive ways of raising revenue than just imposes taxes in the current time period.

But AIG didn't even provide the cash. It was the middleman between the "investors" who still had a money back guarantee from the public and the transit authority.

GravatarOne of the allegations against ACORN is that they dump huge stacks of cards on registrars at the 11th hour

Well, when is the 11th hour? They have a cut off date to allow for time to process the submissions. If the number of submissions is larger than they expected then perhaps they need to adjust the cut off date or bring on temporary help to process the rush like businesses do.

GravatarThere is no liability here, no criminal conspiracy, no crime. What is here is a lot of sound and fury signifying the desperation of the GOP.

It's pretty obvious to me they did nothing wrong intentionally, but I'm not so sure that in the strictest de jure sense there was no crime. IOW, there's a problem with the law and not them. They are required by law to submit registration forms they recognize as bogus, and yet the submission of said bogus forms is apparently actionable by the election authorities. Thus, if you really want to fuck them up, all you have to do is go work for them and submit a bunch of bogus forms in a district where there are authorities with the appropriate bias. Seems like a goodfull employment scheme for the Cheetoh brigade.

I will never understand people who continually vote for the very same folks who keep them poor.

GravatarThat's why the GOP efforts to fuck up the registration lists in WI before the election will not disenfranchise voters if they're ready to "re-register" when they vote. If they're smart, they'll vote early to avoid any issue and long lines.

Shouldn't happen, of course, but the fight to vote will be waged at every level this election. If anyone thinks we're not in the midst of a civil war in this country, think again.

(The attesting friend I mentioned above does not have to be registered already, but able to register by the more official methods, just to be clear.)

GravatarOne of the allegations against ACORN is that they dump huge stacks of cards on registrars at the 11th hour

so ... acorn is trying to suppress voters? see, that's what i don't get.

Gravataroh, i was thinking of eliminating registration altogether. but i'm not silly - i know some kind of identification would have to take its place.

more and more I favor paper ballots and purple fingers.

All the id stuff, address checking, purging of dead people etc is intended to prevent people from voting more than once. It matters, a little, that you vote where you actually live, but even that is not all that rigid (else we wouldn't have Cheney in office). Paper ballots, and an indelible indicator that you have voted works for me.

GravatarI will never understand people who continually vote for the very same folks who keep them poor.
Terry C - Obama/Biden 2008

Behold the power of non-thinking.

GravatarThe Christ-centered marriage is one where both husband and wife are united in Christ. A home that is religiously divided will have difficulties. Often there is a tendency for one to compromise Biblical teaching in order to keep peace in the family. The question of what to teach the children becomes a serious problem. Where will the emphasis be in regard to recreation, giving to the Lord's Cause, involvement in church activities. With which parent will children attend worship services? These are but a few of the problems faced by a religiously divided home.

The Corinthian brethren had problems because of religiously mixed marriages. However, both Paul and Peter make it clear that a Christian married to a non-Christian is not a sinful relationship (1 Cor. 7:12-14; 1 Pet. 3:1-6). Yet, keep in mind Jesus' teaching: "A house divided against itself shall not stand" (Matt. 12:25). Jesus also said, "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you" (Matt. 6:33). In view of these considerations, it is always best for a Christian to marry a Christian!

Gravatarso ... acorn is trying to suppress voters?

The claim is that acorn is trying to get people onto the rolls multiple times, so they can vote multiple times.

Gravatarmore and more I favor paper ballots and purple fingers.

purple people eaters would not be able to vote.

jayackroyd | 10.18.08 - 11:18 am | #

that to me is a different (or difficult to support) claim. a deluge of forms at the last minute would more likely result in not being able to process them all.

GravatarThe "11th-hour" complaint is nonsense; the cutoff-dates are the cutoff-dates.

Gravatar It matters, a little, that you vote where you actually live, but even that is not all that rigid (else we wouldn't have Cheney in office)

well, there are local candidates too.

GravatarLook, registration is there to ensure people are citizens (and alive) as well as residents where they say they are (goes to state elections.) I'm not opposed to having registration, just that it is done in a manner that has the least impact the right to vote.

Gravatarthey'll vote early

this is wreaking serious havoc with the republican suppression methods. It's like in Indiana. I hope those nuns who couldn't vote in the primaries because they didn't have ids now have absentee ballots. That's much easier and cheaper than getting them to DMV. No ids required to get an absentee ballot.

GravatarChrist...these fucking people are nuts.

Nothing like a shitty GOP candidate to bring all of the loons out of the woodwork.

GravatarAll this talk about fraudulent voter registration has led me to one conclusion.

The real scam is having a registration deadline at all. It's just a mechanism by which to disenfranchise people.

Same-day registration is okay. Go to vote and prove on the spot that you're eligibile. No muss, no fuss.

Any pre-election deadline simply invites shenanigans. Show up to vote and prove that you proved that you were eligible at some previous date? Stupid.

Yet another reason Minnesota rocks your face. (along with Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, Wyoming and North Dakota in this instance)

GravatarThe AMA is pushing Gordon Smith. It's very hard to take.

GravatarEstimates are for higher turnout than 04, maybe 65%. Trying to register all those new voters on election day at the polls would be nearly impossible.

GravatarSorry - I would feel pity for THEM

Gravatarwell, there are local candidates too.

Indeed. And in closely contested local elections this would matter, a lot in a precinct-level race for school board. That's an argument for putting those races into odd numbered years, because the voting management problem is different. It DOES matter where you live for those elections, and there is no real problem with overwhelming turnout.

GravatarStadium Star [Kathryn Jean Lopez]

GravatarA Christ-centered marriage is one that is built on the life and teaching of Jesus. These are but a few of the fundamentals. While we live in a wicked world where the home is under constant attack, Christ furnishes us with ample instruction so that we might overcome the onslaught of Satan. May we study his word diligently and follow it in order to have a Christ-centered marriage.

GravatarLucky me...I live a half-block from my polling station. Basically, I can roll out of bed and stumble up the hill, cast my ballot, and be back in time to walk the dog.

Fucker hated everyone...particularly women.

GravatarThe real scam is having a registration deadline at all. It's just a mechanism by which to disenfranchise people.

it really isn't that hard to beat the deadline.

if the nation as a whole really wanted to register everyone, it could be made a lot easier and more efficient. voter registration could be part of every driver's license change of address, every lease, every home purchase, graduating high school, etc. yes, some would not fit in any category and would need a special effort, but with a national system that kicks in at related life events, it could be statistically a non-issue.

GravatarDr. J that might be the next step.  The oral  medication is not working as it should be. I'll report back in 6 weeks.

You'll love it!  It works so well it'll change your life completely.  No kidding - you will be crazy about it.  (Did I mention that I've now lost 95% of the weight that the wonky endocrine system put on?)

GravatarTrying to register all those new voters on election day at the polls would be nearly impossible.

Minnesota will do it, they've been doing it for over 30 years. Our turnout hovers in the 70–80% range.

Same-day registration takes a trivial amount of effort and time more than identifying a voter who has pre-registered.

GravatarTerry, that's what makes him so amusing.  The fact that all he has is his latex love doll makes his comments on marriage all the more entertaining

Gravatarvote by mail is the way to go.

Oregon gets 70%

GravatarDouble-voting could easily be eliminated simply by having everybody put their thumbprint on the ballot.

GravatarI wish I was in AZ with Auntie GWPDA.  I could really stand to catch a break.

Arthur would allow me to pet him, wouldn't he?

Gravatarit really isn't that hard to beat the deadline.

The problem is when someone beats the deadline for you by inappropriately culling you, and then you find out after the deadline. When the deadline is election day, that risk is eliminated and at no real cost.

GravatarDo keep in mind that they know their claims to be false, and and simply serve as distractions. The idea is to cast doubt on the results, not actually demonstrate any fraud. They've already been shown to be incapable of doing that.

Having THE FBI investigating FRAUD at ACORN is not intended to get convictions. In fact, I think the early voting has forced them to pull this stuff too early. there are enough news cycles to debunk the claims.

Gravatarbut i'm not nearly so concerned with registration as with registered voters actually getting to vote and having that vote counted correctly.

GravatarTerry, that's what makes him so amusing. The fact that all he has is his latex love doll makes his comments on marriage all the more entertaining

Depends on how voter friendly the state is. Here and where you are, you register and get your ballot, other states, you stand in one line to register than a second to get to vote.

GravatarDouble-voting could easily be eliminated simply by having everybody put their thumbprint on the ballot.

Research 2000 for Daily Kos. 10/14-15. Likely voters. MoE 4% (9/16-17 results)

McCain (R) 45 (53)
Obama (D) 45 (40)

It looks like the nation's economic woes have dragged this state back into a tie, after seemingly out of reach for Obama. This confirms two recent polls showing the race neck-and-neck.

Let's be honest here -- this isn't a state we need to win. Its 3 electoral votes won't make much a difference to Obama's chances of victory. It's mathematically irrelevant.

But politically, it would be HUGE. This is a state Bush won by 28 points in 2004. Obama would expand the Democratic map, earning a national mandate by winning in every region of the country. And it would show Republicans that they aren't safe anywhere, not even in their supposed "strongholds".

Gravatarnot just LA, dude.

Chicago is going to see an increase in rates and possibly service reductions.

This is only a year after we finally started to reform the funding mechanism for public transit in the Chicago region.

Governor Rod keeps making things tougher by giving away free rides to various groups, like senior citizens, even though there was absolutely NO pressure to add free rides.

All seniors get free rides, no income test or anything. Which is stupid when you have a 65 year old investment banker commuting back and forth each day from a rich suburb downtown.

Low income seniors already had reduced or free rides, so this primarily benefits seniors who are doing well, while ignoring people who may need additional transit assistance (single mothers, for instance)

GravatarCouldn't the MTA issue municipal bonds to re-fund this?

The leaseback deals were economically unsound in any case.
