RGE Monitor:
It appears from the WSJ account as if little Amherst Holdings of Austin, Texas was happy to sell the big guys like J.P. Morgan Chase, Royal Bank of Scotland, and Bank of America something like $130 million notional CDS on a $27 million credit event, used the proceeds to buy off and make good the underlying subprime loans, and pocketed $70 million or so for their troubles. The big guys, on the other hand, paid perhaps a hundred million and got back zip.
Said big guys, naturally, are screaming bloody murder, trying to bring in the lawyers to show that Amherst wasn't playing by the rules of the game.
For my money, the first rule we need would be a law, not a rule, that notional not exceed actual.
Barring that, here's another rule I trust: a fool and his money are soon parted.

What I find most amusing is, Froomkin built up a huge following on the internet, and as undountedly the most popular member of the WaPo's internet staff, drove big numbers to their site. Who else do they have to fill this function now? In fact, haven't they just alienated the very audience - the "online" faction - they and other newspapers are constantly claiming are "the future" of their business? Instead of giving Froomkin a constant rash of top-down shit for the past several years, shouldn't they have building on his popularity?

OBAMA TO SEND JOHN MCCAIN TO ATTACK NORTH KOREA
The U.S. military is planning to intercept a flagged North Korean
ship suspected of proliferating weapons material in violation of a
U.N. Security Council resolution passed last Friday, FOX News has learned.
The USS John McCain, a navy destroyer, will intercept the ship Kang
Nam as soon as it leaves the vicinity off the coast of China, according to
a senior U.S. defense official. The order to inderdict has not been given
yet, but the ship is getting into position.

I was thinking exactly this reading a post by tristero. I spent an hour talking with Froomkin for my SL interview show. One of the things I brought up was how people who thought of him (and Glennzilla, ftm) as "liberal" would react when he criticized the Obama administration.
Dan always seemed entirely non-partisan to me. Being critical of people in government who lie to people and break the law doesn't fit on the left/right spectrum in a healthy society.

I find that progressives, unlike the RW with their NO TAXES, SMALL GOVERNMENT, MILITARY SECURITY, & FAMILY VALUES, have given little thought to what constitutes liberal values. Thus, you have sections of the progressive community oriented toward women's rights, another oriented toward minority rights, another toward economic justice, another toward gay rights, another toward environmentalism. Many of their members spend time only on their particular agenda without any involvement in the broader issues.

The USS John McCain was involved in an incident with a Chinese sub last Friday - near Subic Bay off the Philippines. The Chinese sub was shadowing the destroyer when it hit the underwater sonar array
that the USS McCain was towing behind it.
The U.N. resolution does not have a lot of teeth to it. The resolution
would not allow the United States to board the ship forcibly. States to board the ship forcibly. Rather, U.S. military would have to request permission to board -- a request North Korea is unlikely to grant.

I think part of the problem is that we have a scarcity of liberal voices that would be equivalent to the far-right that captures Fox News and most of the MSM.
We have a ton of moderate Dems that bombard the media and we have a few liberals like Kucinich and Waters that rarely make MSM.
What is missing is "far-left" or "left" voices analogous on the spectrum to the far right that permeate the MSM.
Where are our Left voices? No wonder the spectrum has shrunk. Why can't a Zinn or a Chomsky be part of our debate?

All positions of principal, such as the ones you list have always been expediently ignored by the powerful. Maintaining positions of principal requires high minded faith and commitment, not pragmatic political realism.
The Democrats in the U.S.A. have long been proponents of torture and using lies to get the USA into wars.
The school of the America's, CIA run torture training for democracy squashers in central america springs to mind.
Lies are an essential nutrient for all wars. Strings of lies on Vietnam etc.
Most people break the law occasionally if they think they can get away with it. Governments are no different.
