GravatarThere is something truly f*cked up about American food. It's making us all fat. And unhappy. And Republican.

It's making some doctors rich. The highest paid medical profession on average (in the US) is gastroenterology, not far down the list are cardiac docs.

Both would have less work if Americans ate more of the kind of food Atrios has been showing us from his trip to Spain.

GravatarRoseanne was always a so-so comedian to me in those sitcoms she was in. But turn her loose in a talk panel and she'll melt the ass of any moron or Gooper or others of their ilk, just like it was made of candle wax.

GravatarTwelve year-old Lieberman, stately senator:

Lieberman likes expressions of American power. A few years ago, I was in a movie theatre in Washington when I noticed Lieberman and his wife, Hadassah, a few seats down. The film was “Behind Enemy Lines,” in which Owen Wilson plays a U.S. pilot shot down in Bosnia. Whenever the American military scored an onscreen hit, Lieberman pumped his fist and said, “Yeah!” and “All right!”

GravatarWow. I just read that Brazil's healthcare system will now cover sex change surgery, for free.

Their constitution guarantees medical care as a basic right.

A panel of federal judges there has given the government 30 days to offer the procedure or face fines of $5000(US) a day, but the health minister was already planning to include the procedures.

The court's ruling said "from the biomedical perspective, transsexuality can be described as a sexual identity disturbance where individuals need to change their sexual designation or face serious consequences in their lives, including intense suffering, mutilation and suicide.

This was from the AP in my Tulsa World newspaper.

Can you even imagine a country like that?

didn't see the show but a) i've heard it from gay comics (and kathy griffen) and yes its different than hearing it from falwell

Gravatarnuncamas--brazil's healthcare system may cover sex change operations, but it is an inefficient element of an inefficient social system. their pension systems are some of the most generous in the world--but studies show they benefit the wealthy more than the poor or middle class; their education system is slanted solely toward the wealthy, with underfunded primary and secondary education (where the rich send their kids to private schools) but free higher education for those who qualify--which is the wealthy. the poor in brazil must pay for private, substandard high education. they have policies that limit competition to keep the wealthy rich and the poor poor. they tax more than most countries but give so much to the upper classes through "social" programs that they have no money for roads, for hospitals, for infrastructure. brazil also has a human slavery problem that they have been relatively unwilling to address.

sorry - then i don't understand the point of your initial post (unless it was to be provacative/pick a fight) and i'm not sure i know what you mean in this one. "a monolithic approach to being gay?" as if sexual orientation has anything to do with approach to fiscal policy?

i only have two issues with log cabin republicans. 1) they are republicans and 2) they belong to a party whose official platform is to treat them as less than full citizens.

(i like lists)

Gravatarnuncamas--lula's social programs are marginal at best. where he has most helped the poor is by adopting conservative fiscal policies (in the sense that he hasn't been running bigger deficits) and in having a central bank that controls inflation. people are now investing in brazil, which is helping growth and helping the poor. businesses are more willing to hire people now, even with some of the most restrictive labor laws in the world, because things are a bit more stable. still, brazil has one of the worst income inequalities in the world and that isn't changing.

GravatarMichael Deaver, one of Ronald Reagan's closest advisers, has died of pancreatic cancer. He was 69.

Freeze the brain so we can document the atrocities later.

As for Friedman, he's a sick rich white fuck and if there's any justice he shits his last shit alone on a cholera cot under the blazing sun.

Gravatarhttp://www.chron.com/disp/story....an/ 5061221.html

PEARLAND — Korean War veteran Nyles Reed, 75, opened an envelope last week to learn a Purple Heart had been approved for injuries he sustained as a Marine on June 22, 1952.

But there was no medal. Just a certificate and a form stating that the medal was "out of stock."

"I can imagine, of course, with what's going on in Iraq and Afghanistan, there's a big shortage," Reed said. "At least, I would imagine so."

The form letter from the Navy Personnel Command told Reed he could wait 90 days and resubmit an application, or buy his own medal.

After waiting 55 years, however, Reed decided to pay $42 for his own Purple Heart and accompanying ribbon — plus state sales taxes — at a military surplus store.

GravatarDid I miss something - why did this come up? I mean, it isn't like we don't know the mustache tickles the Bushies' privates, but did he do/say something today that I missed?

Gravatarmost gays who are at all political (and few of my gay friends are--which may be why they are my friends) have only one thing that matters to them--issues relating to gay rights.

i don't find that to be true at all. in fact, the opposite. because i have friends who are politically involved and just happen to be gay, i guess, instead of friends that are gay who happen to be politcally involved.

not to say i don't believe you - i certainly know gay people whose only political interest is gay rights. i just don't consider them really 'politically interested,' any more than the guy trying to build a walmart who shows up at every town meeting.

Stunt Woman | 08.18.07 - 1:37 pm | #,

no, i wouldn't say that. i think it's more a matter of identification.

like i said above, activists who are gay rather than gays who are active.

at a politcal rally or event, how do you even know who is gay or straight? hmmm? unless that is the primary way they self-identify and present themselves.

personally, i believe if it wasn't for all this homophobic anti-gay crap the pugs/fundies/islamists push around, "being gay" would not be such a major part of anyone's life. when i stand up for universal healthcare, no one asks me which positions my wife and i prefer, or who is on top. with gays, it's only an issue because it's an issue.
