Yes, I too want to know how's it going Andy?
In my CBT group they were talking about anxiety leading to sleep problems.
I told them about the time I couldn't sleep and it was making me crazy. I had a boss who was like one of those crazy bosses you saw in a movie. Up at 5:00 on the treadmill calling me and leaving messages for me. I was working insane hours 6 days a week (although a relative who was a lawyer trying to point out that he had to provide even more billable hours than I did-he just had to beat me in the macho "work yourself into the ground until you burn out" category.
I was telling the sleep specialists what my schedule was like and what I was responsible for. It became clear to him, and then to me, that I was never "home from work" that I was constantly on call. I couldn't even relax in my sleep because I knew that when I woke up there were be more work waiting for me via voicemail and email.

BAGHDAD — Tens of thousands of Iraqis rallied in the streets of Baghdad Saturday against a proposed American-Iraqi deal that would allow U.S. troops to stay in the country for three more years.
Muqtada al Sadr, a widely influential Shiite cleric who called for the demonstration, issued a statement demanding that Iraq's parliament reject the deal.
"These are the Iraqi people in front of you, rejecting this agreement," Sadr's statement said. "The treaty is in your hands, so the destiny and reputation of Iraq also is in your hands ... If (the government) told you that this agreement will give you sovereignty, they are liars."
After seven months of wearying back and forth, negotiators completed a draft deal this week. For it to take effect, however, the proposal must win approval from Iraq's Political Council for National Security, the prime minister's cabinet and parliament.
U.S. officials are desperately hoping to finalize the agreement before Dec. 31, when a United Nations mandate that has allowed American troops to operate in Iraq will expire. If a deal isn't in place by the end of the year, American forces in Iraq could technically become illegal occupiers.

Half Moon Bay is about 45 minutes south of San Francisco along the coast. Great little place to hang out. Some nice restaurants (I recommend a dive called the Flying Fish which serves killer fish and chips and cole slaw you can actually eat - and want to!). Up the road a ways is a little town called Pescadero which has a great goat cheese farm and an old-timey bar/restaurant called Duarte's that's pretty cool.

Another under-the-radar slime tactic has been the distribution of over 20 million copies of DVDs of "Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West." This video is being placed in newspapers and mailboxes around the country by the Clarion Fund, a pro-Bush outfit. Fundies are eating it up.
A relative of mine who is canvassing for Obama in SW Missouri reports that this video showed up in mailboxes all over the region last week. People she is calling and contacting are citing it as a reason they aren't going to vote for Obama.
See, they learned from emails that Obama's a muslim, and then they learned from McCain that Obama isn't like us and has dark secrets (i.e., he's a muslim but won't admit it), and now they have a video that tells them muslims want to take over the
West and impose Sharia law.
All part of the slime machine.
Council on American-Islamic Relations considers it such a big deal they want IRS to revoke the Clarion Fund's tax exempt status because they are campaigning for McCain by distributing this video.

The mother of my best friends used to live in Mendocino. We'd go up for a week every 4th of July and crash at her place. Then we'd "volunteer" to run the first shift at the beer booth on the 4th at the local historical museum she was in charge of. We'd finish up about 3 and then hang out at Dick's, the greatest dive bar in the world, for the rest of the afternoon.
Spocko: sorry, I wandered off into meatspace for a while & just saw your question from below. Karin: If you sell your car does that count for more than you paid for it, can that be taxed as a capital gain?
spocko
Technically, I believe the answer is yes. But that's like voluntarily mailing in the sales tax you owe for purchases you made out of state. Or paying taxes on your eBay collectible items that you sold for more than you paid for them. No one ever does it.
Of course, with the car you could deduct all the repairs and maintenance, which I assume was needed to keep the value up, so it's probably not really showing a profit.

We're still figuring out what we've got in our pool of volunteers. I don't think we're going to have a problem here--2006 was a sea change in local politics, and both Obama and Shaheen are polling very well. But we're working on getting everybody scheduled for their jobs, starting with Weds training.
I was discussing with another victim of the sign heist, the 'redneck' voters. We both agree that while they are waiting for a major screw-up on Obama's part to rationalize not voting for him, they also are listening, and the bail-out woke some up. They sound like they might vote for Obama, while telling their buds at the bar that they voted for McCain.

From below. I'm not making this up.
So, just so you know. The new talking points on Obama on RW radio.
Bill Ayers ghost wrote Obamba's book. Proof? They used the same phrase, "Behind enemy lines" and Obama hadn't ever published anything good before.
Also, Ayer's books uses sailing terms. SO DOES OBAMA'S!
Obama isn't an American Citizen because he was brought to Hawaii as an infant.
(The MSM is covering this up! This is the reason that Arnold can't get elected) The host said, "We are just trying to get the truth out to you."
The call in guest said, "Why don't they subpoena them! We only have 17 days left!"
Joe the Plumber is being picked on and we know more about Joe the Plumber than we do about Obama.
(Barbara Simp son things that it is terrible what they are doing to poor Joe. She would like to see him sue someone. I hope she will keep that in mind when her colleagues out me and call me a liar, thief and Commie to the entire bay area for the crime of letting the advertisers know what they are paying for.)

I ran into one such woman at a GOTV meeting last night. She refused to take a yard sign and said she didn't want her neighbors to know who she was voting for.

Are you running some of the GOTV canvasses, schooling them and such, or are you going with?
Not entirely clear right now. I'm going to work out distribution of duties with our other DFO on Weds (she's the de facto FO now since our other one has withdrawn to focus just on Dartmouth). I am definitely on tap for doing some of the training, but not sure what's going to happen at our staging area and whatnot--she might focus on Lisbon while I do Littleton. Our area is sort of neglected, so we're figuring all this shit out with the Shaheen FO on our own...

The one that I hadn't heard before was Ayer's ghost writing Obama's books.
But the one that I think would get the most traction was when this guy called up and said how he was a small business man and Obama was putting a glass ceiling on ambition. Nobody will work hard to make more than 250,000. "What the point the government will take it all anyway."
He actually started tickling the "Republicans are good for winners, Democrats are for losers" line pretty hard. It would be just the kind of think the republican business people that I know would bring up.

It's not alarming by any means, but the consensus seems to be that McCain's national level of support has ticked up very slightly in the past week. According to Nate Silver's analysis at Five-thirty-eight, this is kind of puzzling, because it doesn't correlate with candidate favorability ratings, and it also doesn't track with the numbers from swing states either. But it seems McCain's national topline number is up slightly, Obama's down slightly.
I haven't yet seen a good explanation for why McCain's numbers would be going up (even slightly) after the last debate. They should be going down, if the debate had any effect. His debate performance was terrible, and I thought we'd see his numbers going down after that. But they haven't, they're up slightly. What gives?
Latest I saw was Nate Silver's explanation that it has to do with renewed Republican enthusiasm, so that right-wingers who said they weren't going to vote in previous weeks are now saying they are, so they're being picked up in the likely voter models.
Millions of slimy robocalls and 28 million free "Obsession" videos might also have had an effect. Doubt that it will be effective in the long run, but that massive amount of slime surely has some statistical effect, even if it's slight.

Nobody will work hard to make more than 250,000.
That is so very silly. First, billions of people work incredibly hard to make very little money in this world, incredibly hard. Second, you can certainly earn more than 250,000 even if your marginal tax rate goes up with your earnings. Third, as people earn more they don't necessarily want to work even harder to get even more money. Sometimes they want to do other stuff with that money.

My understanding was that the Obama campaign had a problem getting yard signs, they had a slight number and then ran out, had them on back order but might not get them in time for the election. My local Democratic Hq had a few of them last week, but they ran out again. Meanwhile, in my neighborhood I count 4 McCain/Palin signs, no Obama/Biden. But every other car seems to have an Obama sticker.

Interestingly
I think I've finally come around to the 'signs are over' mentality. I think this election was the transition period. The older vote, who vote, will not be around forever. The younger voters are coming out in stronger numbers and are tech savvy, therefore signs will be old school and really over.
I am aware that getting the younger voter out is always the goal, but this time it seems to be different, and it will be locals who will have to work to keep them active.

When Al Franken produced a 1992 Saturday Night Live "Presidential Bash," he fired off a letter to a man he'd been skewering for years -- Richard Nixon -- in the hope that one of his favorite political punching bags would bestow a personal appearance on the show.
Nixon's office declined, and Franken gleefully framed the reply as a trophy of sorts in his long comic battle against what he considers the forces of political darkness.
The rejection letter took its rightful place in an odd, ironic tribute to liberals' favorite Vietnam-era villain -- a bathroom in Franken's elegant Minneapolis townhome filled with Nixon memorabilia.
THIS is the man I want as my Senator!

...if you figure in the robocalls and recent ads, McCain's entire campaign is now comprised of innuendo and lies meant to tie Obama to various stereotypes of African-Americans and of course Arab terrorism. His purported foreign policy experience hasn't been part of the campaign's message in weeks. Just black, black, black, terrorist, terrorist, terrorist.
If I ran the Obama campaign, I'd buy two hours of airtime, and show "Blazing Saddles" with live MST3K riffing by Barack and Joe.

And speaking of "nailing it," take it away, Ian Welsh!
...the problem is that the West's elites, and especially America's, are boobs. They couldn't run a hot dog stand, let alone the world's economy. And I think, in their hearts, they know it, even if they'd never admit it. It's why they never allow any real accountability, because if one of them is guilty, they know almost all of them are guilty. They all sat aside complacently while the world economy went into multiple bubbles. They almost all sat aside while Iraq was planned and executed. They all watched Afghanistan go up in flames. Most of them signed on for the bailout even as they were saying "I have no idea how this could work, but we should do it anyway".
The American aristocracy is a good description of them. They're entitled. More and more they are the children of previous members of the class. They're rich, they're inbred and they're an incestuous bunch, with everyone's hands in everyone else's pants (somehow I've never been able to convince a think tank to do a chart of the top 1,000 influentials in DC listing all romantic and family ties. Wonder why?)
In short, they're rich, have a deep sense of entitlement, think they're the best and fear they aren't. They take care of each other first "2 trillion to bail out your bank, dahhhling? Of course, but we mustn't give the peons health care" but they make sure the peasants keep their place.
There are no problems the US has that can be fixed with the current ruling class still in place. They will keep mortgaging the future to save the past: their rule is that the future cannot happen faster than they can buy it up, because if it did they know they couldn't naturally compete for it, because they are, actually, incompetent.
I haven't yet seen a good explanation for why McCain's numbers would be going up (even slightly) after the last debate. They should be going down, if the debate had any effect. His debate performance was terrible, and I thought we'd see his numbers going down after that. But they haven't, they're up slightly. What gives?
There are still some undecideds, and anyone so out of it that they couldn't figure out the differences between these 2 candidates and decide who they prefer till now , are dumb enough that when they do break, the chances are more than even that they'll end up breaking for McCain. Fivethirtyeight also had a post explaining this much better than me. It's a statistical thing.

Of course we shouldn't take stuff for granted, but I will be astonished beyond existence if McCain wins this.
Even if bin Laden were to set off a nuke in a major US city, I don't see how the average person gets past the economic disaster, McCain's age and lack of judgment, and Palin.

Just like a miracle you have to see to believe
'Cause God blessed Texas with His own hand

If you wanna see heaven brother here's your chance

Voters in Polk and Eldred townships may face the unusual prospect of having a deceased candidate on the ballot on Election Day.
The death of state Sen. James Rhoades on Saturday leaves the seat in uncharted territory, little more than two weeks before the election.
Rhoades was facing two challengers in the upcoming election, Democrat P.J. Symons and independent Dennis Baylor.
Symons’ chief of staff Jeremy Mullen said the Democrat’s campaign is being suspended until after Rhoades’ funeral.
Senate Republican officials met Saturday to discuss the matter and made no decision on what to do about Rhoades’ candidacy, said spokesman Erik Arneson.
Senate GOP officials believe a state court’s permission would be needed if they were to seek to replace Rhoades on the ballot with another candidate.
Republicans hold a 29-21 majority over Democrats in the Senate.
“We were counting on him to be re-elected. I don’t know what happens now,” Gleason said. “He’ll be missed by everyone in the Republican Party.”
The 29th district covers Schuylkill County and parts of Berks, Northampton, Lehigh and Carbon counties.

I'm a regular. I spend a shitload of time in Texas.
LONDON (AP) — When 2-month-old Millvina Dean arrived in New York with her mother and brother after surviving the Titanic sinking, city residents gave them a suitcase full of donated clothing to help rebuild their life.
Now, more than 96 years later, that gift is helping the world's last Titanic survivor live out her old age.
Dean sold the small wicker suitcase, along with other mementos of the doomed ocean liner, at auction Saturday to help pay her nursing home fees.
The sale raised $53,906 — ten times the amount she had hoped to make. The suitcase alone sold for $18,650.
"It is a great amount of money. I am sure she will be very happy when we tell her the news," auctioneer Andrew Aldridge said after the sale.

Thousands of people die every year serving their country. Not just soldiers. Police, firefighters, security guards, store clerks, school teachers, utility repairmen, janitors, mail carriers, medical flight attendants, news reporters, paper carriers, these all have met their deaths doing their part to make our society function. These people are worth not one tear, not one honor, not one mention of gratitude and recognition less than does someone in those other uniforms. A society cannot exist on nothing but soldiers and politicians and entertainers.

Thanks for the thought. The oldest son is back to being an attorney for the most part, though with Keeneland running its fall meet, he's been helping Carl Nafsger's stable with six young horses. They are excited about a couple of 2-year-olds.
And the amazing thing, Paul, my son, hangs out with Carl a lot but spends most of his time with back-siders -- mostly Guatemalan grooms and hot-walkers. From what he's told me, not a single one of the owners of various horses is expressing any concern about the economy. They've lost some money but what the hell; they have lots to lose.
Oh Yeah. I still get that silly "the US Army GAVE you your right to free speech" e-mail once in a while.

Every man in my family over the last five generations has served this great nation, with pride.
In 1820, Congress admitted Missouri to the Union as a slave state, opening it to a large migration of white people and their slaves westward from the southern slave states, expanding and widening the slave trade as they went. Joining the migration, the Blow family moved to St. Louis, Missouri, taking Dred Scott with them. There, they sold him to Dr. John Emerson, a military surgeon, who was stationed at Jefferson Barracks. Dred Scott served Dr. Emerson for the next twelve years, traveling with him to other assigned posts in Illinois, the Wisconsin Territory, and at Fort Snelling in what became Minnesota — all places where slavery was prohibited.
At Fort Snelling, Minnesota, Dred Scott met and married Harriet Robinson, also a slave, and they had two children. In 1842, Dr. Emerson and his wife moved back to St. Louis, taking the Scott family along. The following year, 1843, Dr. Emerson died. Now the property of the widow Emerson, Dred, Harriet, and their two children found themselves hired out by her for service to other families.

I'm torn. Old OSU fan, NTodd's Pa's Wife's Pa was a big PSU fan (Class of 41) and even corresponded with Joe P. I think I want it to be the Nittany Lions' year...
As someone who's been in the military, I can say that I feel greatly for those who have turned to it as the only way to achieve any social or economic mobility. Reading "Generation Kill" will give you a taste of just how disorganized -- and unfortuante -- our military has become under Bush, Cheney and others.
Sure, it's a proud calling, but it's not one to be held in adoration. We just need to fund them and use them wisely. Oh, and treat them well when they become veterans -- an often ignored part of the whole equation.

Very few active duty military have enough money where they can make political contributions.-- they get paid shit. And in fact the total contributions are very, very low.
BUT, of that very low total, most goes to Obama. What this tells us, I think, is that of people who are independently wealthy and go into the military, most give to Democrats. In other words, independently wealthy Republicans generally don't go into the military. Ergo, they're chickenhawks.

In the mail today was a newsletter from the local Catholic Diocese addressed to the former owners of this house or current resident. Since we are the current residents (and have been for fifteen years) we opened it.
It was a political statement of the church instructing us on who we, as good Catholics, should vote for in the upcoming elections. After arguing, in Biblical terms - actually a bunch of hooey - it DEMANDED that we vote the straight Republican Ticket as they are the party that demands fealty on the ONLY two issues worth caring about - apparently; abortion and gay marriage.
I guess that murdering by the state and the starving of innocent children and the deprivation of the poor is not something that really bothers the church too much, eh?
What is more galling is that they have the audacity to demand that their parishioners vote for the Republican ticket without endangering their tax-exempt status. From my perspective, the moment they choose sides in an election, they forfeit that right.
But I am old and stupid, right?

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (AFP) — Democrat Barack Obama said Saturday the winds of change were blowing across America as he roused monster crowds totalling more than 175,000 in the Republican "red" state of Missouri.
...
Police said the crowd in St Louis numbered at least 100,000 -- Obama's biggest yet in the United States, second overall only to the 200,000 who saw him speak in Berlin in July. The Kansas City crowd was more than 75,000.

Erin,
Muskegon County Catholic Voter League.
So, I guess it is not the church. My bad.
The question in this debate is this; can a Catholic vote with a clear conscience for a candidate that supports abortion? And, if we vote for the candidate knowing his intent to help murder millions of children, do we become accomplices in the sin of child killing?
(snip)
Certain Catholic Christian believes are essential elements that Catholic Christianity cannot lose without ceasing to be itself.
American politics today hs increasingly become a struggle between those who love traditional Catholic Christianity and those who hate it.
These two cultural adversaries have found it necessary to form alliances with the nations' two dominant political parties.
Cultural moral liberals with the Democratic Party.
Cultural Catholic Christians with the Republican Party.
and they play major roles in them.
This shit is toxic

This is the funniest part of the NYT story about today's campaign activity:
Patricia Watts, 48, an insurance agent who was at the Concord rally, found herself balanced on a political fence until a week ago, when she heard Mr. McCain declare that he was not Mr. Bush. That worked for her.
“I realized,” Ms. Watts said, “you don’t have to change parties to have a change.”
She had briefly considered Mr. Obama, she said, but is now “afraid” of him and thinks he will bring “socialization.”
God forbid, anyone should be socialized.

But then that would not be a bad thing would it?

Sadly I have plenty of Catholic relatives where the candidate's position on abortion is the only thing that matters.
Yes, there are very conservative Catholics, of course. But there are many for whom abortion is a peripheral issue, or no issue at all. The general point was against the church hierarchy's presumption.

Night, all
I am sorry. This nonsense about abortion and gay marriage is just that: nonsense. I was raised in the church and though I no longer believe, I do know that the words of Jesus were not words of exclusion. When he spoke of love and peace and redemption and forgiveness and most of all: of being kind and returning hate with love, he did so knowing that his followers should do the same.
These people are not followers of his words. They are people filled with hate and defilers of the words of Christ and if this gobbledygook were true: they would burn in Hell for eternity for denying the kindness and care to God's creatures in the name of hate and for the the sin of selfishness: the self-righteous assholes.
I'm waiting to see who The Grand Rapids Press endorses...
I shouldn't hope, I know...
But anyway, toesucker, that's great!

I would like the people attacking Obama on radio and TV if they approve of this. I'm sure they will point to some blog posts where someone says the same about McCain. "They do it too!"
-------------- Gun shop stages 'Pre-Osama bin Biden' sale
David Edwards and Stephen C. Webster
A New Mexico gun shop owner says that he is "proud to offend" supporters of Barack Obama with its sign outside the store which reads "Pre-Osama bin Biden sale! Today, 7 PM - MIDNITE."
And even while the sale is over, the sign remains.
"If this sign offended people, I am damn proud of it," said shop owner Cope Reynolds in an interview with The Daily Times. Reynolds explained that "a lot of it is because of his Muslim upbringing."
"His name is Osama, er ..." began a store patron during an interview. "I mean, Barack Hasam Obama."
"It's actually Hussein Obama," said the cameraman.
"Hussein Obama," continued the patron. "That is a Muslim name."
"It's his background," said another customer. "Part of his background is a Muslim background"
"I think Obama has ... Has terrorist ties," said shop owner Reynolds. "Whether he's Muslim or not is irrelevant."
Reynold told KOAT that when he took down the sign he would probably replace it with "something equally as offensive."
