GravatarYour librul media - In The Tank For Obama™

Gravatari stopped counting last night when campbell brown put tom delay on to discuss whether it was a good idea for obama to pick clinton for state, and talk about how obama is going to shred the constitution.

i mean, i enjoy absurdist theatre at least as much as the next guy, but i think she jumped the shark with that interview.

Gravatardirk, I wish just once the damn shark would jump her.

GravatarThe plan of the right wing was to fill up think tanks with conservative "experts," and speakers' bureaus full of conservative "experts," and eventually fill the media's Rolodexes with conservative names, so that everywhere they turned, there was a right-winger there to answer their questions.

In that, over the past thirty-five years, they've succeeded admirably. Now, it's gotten to the point where the media has their regular conservative favorites upon whom they look first to fill slots.

The wingers have come a long way since the embarrassments surrounding Richard Nixon's demise.

GravatarMore material for CoT to work with.

Gravatardelay explained, btw, why mccain lost - or rather, why obama won. surprisingly, it had nothing to do with his ideas or his policies which the american people unanimously reject. see, he had a great organization and after hillary stepped aside he inherited her organization too. so he got a lot of people to go to the polls, but those people have no idea what kind of president he will be and don't trust him because he has no record and is outside the mainstream. but no one wanted to vote for mcain, so when they went into the booth they were either voting for or against obama.

he didn't get around to explaing why most of them voted "for," though. i was disappointed because i wanted to know.

GravatarOh, geez, listening to Austin's NPR station, and they're playing Dave van Ronk imitating Ernest Borgnine singing "Teddy Bears' Picnic."

GravatarThe wingers have come a long way since the embarrassments surrounding Richard Nixon's demise.

well of course not - the democrats were out of power, since they couldn't affect policy and weren't the heads of the committees, they wouldn't have had anything worthwhile to say.

now that the dems are in power, however, it is very important to hear the opposing viewpoint or how will we know what is really going on?

As long as there are right-wingers around to whine that Obama has an obligation to govern to the right to "unite" the nation as Reagan did, Reagan will live on....

If Obama's smart, he'll rescind, in full, Bush's EO 13233 right away, and force the release of Poppy Bush's VP and Prez papers. Reagan won't look quite so presidential--or uniting--once that happens.

This is something I was trying to explain to a libertarian acquaintance of mine who kept saying that the GOP could destroy Obama by saying X, Y and Z: When people hate you, they're not that interested in what you have to say. Even if you wanted to assume for the sake of argument that these assholes have anything worthwhile to say, the fact that its these assholes saying it seems to be turning a lot of Americans off.

It's almost like people are sick of their bad faith and their posturing.

GravatarThe solution is simple and all-too-obvious: if the networks mostly only interview Republicans, DON'T WATCH THEM! Don't watch this crap, and let the ratings fall. Just go away, take a walk, do something else. Don't watch the freaking teevee. Forget about it.

I am so sick of people bitching about who's on and who's not on. YOU'RE WATCHING, RIGHT? Which means you're a counted viewer advertisers will pay to reach. Under the circumstances, complaining about who's on is like shooting yourself in the head and complaining about how much it hurts.

Gah!!!

GravatarWhat Toonscribe said.  What makes this Sylmar fire shocking to me is -where- it is - on the flatland, not a speck of chaparral within 20 miles, streets all macadam and concrete, no shake shingle roofs, in short - the most urban possible suburbia.  If there are ficus or iceplant, that's about it for the foliage, maybe some ivy.  This isn't a forest fire, it's not a brush fire - it's a city, street fire.  The fuel is houses.

I am very grateful Sallyh, unlike others, listened to her best instincts as a Californian and fled.

And the results of the fire?  NWS has issued HIGH POLLUTION ADVISORY FOR PINAL COUNTY TODAY
Valid
Until:

GravatarDammit! Emmylou is in town tonight or Prairie Home Companion. Anyone got 40 bucks to spare for a ticket??

GravatarLet's look at the bright side.

The more the Mainstream Media panders to the 23%, the less influence and importance they have.

People who want real news have options: the blogs, the small independent papers, and sources outside the US. It's terrible that we have such lousy press at home, but perhaps the market is producing alternatives.

I have said often enough to become infamous for it that I don't think any newspapers apart from a handful will survive five years (the WSJ, the NYT, maybe the LAT, probably the WaPo but perhaps not; certainly NOT the Chicago Tribune, and I'm very sorry abuot that). And why? Because they've done a simply terrible job informing people.

The writing was on the wall in Chicago when the City News Bureau shut down about nine years ago. Independent, actual reporters' group covering local events. Now dead, because of "costs".

Their alumni included Mike Royko, Seymour Hersh, Herman Kogan, Kurt Vonnegut and the playright Charles MacArthur, whose play The Front Page showed people what the paper business was really like.

GravatarI am so sick of people bitching about who's on and who's not on. YOU'RE WATCHING, RIGHT? Which means you're a counted viewer advertisers will pay to reach. Under the circumstances, complaining about who's on is like shooting yourself in the head and complaining about how much it hurts.

The flip side of this is that, generally, people do watch television to get the news, because the highest percentage of people in this country are television watchers, not newspaper readers.

What I do (haven't had television for eleven years) doesn't change the fact that what news is available is distorted by a heavy weighting to the conservative side of the scales.

I guess you've never heard of activism? 'Cause another option is to take note of who's on and who's not on, and complain about it publicly, and pressure the networks to do something about it, which is really not all that hard and sometimes get results, as the last 30 years should prove to anyone who's paying attention.

With luck, the 2010 election results will make the GOP long for the comparatively bloodless 2008 returns.

GravatarPresident Nicolas Sarkozy of France joined Russia in condemning the Pentagon's plans to install missile defence bases in central Europe yesterday and backed President Dmitri Medvedev's previously ignored calls for a new pan-European security pact.

Both presidents concluded a Russia-EU summit, in Nice in the south of France, with an agreement to convene a major international conference next summer at which the Americans, Russians and the 27 countries of the EU should come up with a blueprint for new post-cold war "security architecture" in Europe.

The call for such a pact has been Medvedev's central foreign policy message since he succeeded Vladimir Putin as president earlier this year. Medvedev has called for the new deal in several keynote speeches but has been snubbed by western leaders until Sarkozy delivered a characteristic surprise yesterday, appearing to hijack the subject.

Sarkozy said: "We could meet in mid-2009 to lay the foundations of what could possibly be a future pan-European security system."

GravatarMSNBC, by taking on the voice of the hostile opposition, finally gained traction during the 2008 campaign after being, in the words of its president, Phil Griffin, “out of the discussion” for its entire previous history. But it now faces the prospect of changing into the clothes of the administration’s ardent defender.

At the same time Fox News, which had been the most significant media supporter of the Bush administration, is now expected to revert to the position it held when it first broke through during the Clinton years: the aggressive voice of the opposition.

The Times explains that if Barack Obama, after taking office, decides to release information from his predecessor's tenure, Bush could file a lawsuit claiming executive privilege. The dispute would likely go to the Supreme Court, and there appears to be little precedent that would guide a ruling.

How exactly does a former president have any standing on the issue of public documents?

Phila,

not to seem bitchy or anything, but you made the claim. to what did you refer? and how does it prove your thesis that bitching about teevee product that is pro-winger can 'make a difference?' that's all i'm asking, respectfully. i don't think it ever does, or if it does, it's hardly noticable in the overall scheme of teevee "news/opinion" product. the imbalance atrios mentions isn't going to go away until...well, perhaps never. not to take sides with the troll, but i am firmly in the camp of "turn it off, don't pay for it" as i think that's pretty much the only way we can have "an impact." the part where you say publically complaining to the networks "makes a difference" over the last few decades is the part i really don't agree with.

GravatarOT: French politics -
It is an improbable saga featuring a celebrity break-up, back-stabbing, a Joan of Arc figure and a dangerously popular postman. Members of the bitterly divided French Socialist party gathered last night in the champagne capital of Reims to find a new leader to reverse their misfortunes and provide an opposition to president Nicolas Sarkozy.

As delegates browsed souvenir shops offering François Mitterrand and Che Guevara bookmarks, and neon jackets that boasted: "I drive on the right by obligation, but vote left by conviction," a mood of frustration hung over the party.

Ségolène Royal, the outsider who styled herself as a modern Joan of Arc during her failed presidential campaign against Sarkozy, has surprised party critics in the party by emerging as frontrunner in the leadership vote next Thursday. But Royal does not have the backing of a clear majority - the woman who once declared "You should love each other!" to a party rally is now at the mercy of party hatreds and intrigue.

According to complicated party rules, leading Socialists will spend tonight - dubbed "the night of the long daggers" - in negotiations on whether to back Royal or form alliances to stop her. All candidates will declare themselves this weekend before next week's vote.

Royal, 55, has vowed to modernise the party and promote the next generation. She said this week: "I am not a woman of the political machine. I prefer contact with the people."

She has veered left during the global financial crisis, suggesting heads of failed banks should be barred from working in finance and big oil companies should have their profits taxed in order to save struggling businesses. But she supports leaving a door open to alliances with French centrists, and critics accuse her of blowing left and right with the weather.

GravatarMayor Villagarosa is reporting the fire has covered more than 6500 acres so far.  Still evacuated, asking people not return until cleared.  Basically every cop and firefighter south of Solvang is on scene.  State's declared a 'state of emergency' for all of LA County.  About 10,000 have been evacuated.  Power's on, but they're trying to minimise it, along with water usage.  Shelters are still available - big animal evacuation location is at Pierce College.

Didn't say you said that. But it does seem to me to be implied, given your clear disbelief that "that bitching about teevee product that is pro-winger can 'make a difference.'"

i am firmly in the camp of "turn it off, don't pay for it" as i think that's pretty much the only way we can have "an impact."

Well, since I've turned it off and don't pay for it, I must agree. On the other hand, that doesn't mean that I can't take a moment or two to write networks or advertisers when a blogger, or a pressure group like MM, asks me to.

Not that fucking complicated, really.

Having learned that bitching about what's on TV accomplishes precisely nothing, and that it's the height of insolence to suggest that this implies that MMFA is wasting its time, and that the right's calculated effort to force the media dramatically to the right over the last thirty years either never happened, or would obviously have happened regardless, I guess I've gotten enough edification for today. Maybe I'll go feed the ducks.

Not in Irish voting.

GravatarHow exactly does a former president have any standing on the issue of public documents?

IIRC, it goes back to a case that involved Truman after he left office, in which Truman asserted ex post facto executive privilege.

The SC hasn't yet taken the opportunity to rule on the matter.

The Presidential Records Act does complicate the matter, because it specifies that the papers need not be released for twelve years (although a President can release them at an earlier date, as Clinton did).

The bigger issue, I think, is that there's been no discussion of criminal conduct in this context. Were formal charges to be filed within the statute of limitations, Bush would be on very shaky ground attempting to exert ex post facto executive privilege in a criminal matter.

What's at the root of this, I think, is Department of Justice malfeasance. Some legal experts are expecting the Bushies to claim executive privilege as a means of preventing a new administration from releasing previously classified judgments by the DoJ that Congress has been unable to obtain thus far. The law says that the President's papers regarding WH operations are secure from release for twelve years. The DoJ is, technically, an independent agency of government, but, the threads between the WH and DoJ are very strong. The Bushies will likely try to use those connections as an excuse to seal DoJ operational documents during their tenure.

Hopefully, that won't work.

Gravatarover there -

A car bomb has killed 11 people and wounded 36 others in the northern Iraqi town of Tal Afar, Iraqi police and the US military say.

The explosion, the latest in a series that have rocked the country in weeks, took place outside a car dealership on Saturday.

Tal Afar is in Iraq's volatile Nineveh province, where Sunni al-Qaeda fighters still operate despite several security crackdowns aimed at stamping them out.

The town lies halfway between the Syrian border and the city of Mosul, which the US military considers the last remaining urban bastion of al-Qaeda in Iraq.

A US statement said the car bomb was driven by a suicide bomber, but Iraqi police said the car was parked.

I kind of like the trend towards shows that just end, for whatever reason. The old model of running stuff into the ground hasn't been a good one, on the whole. And it would've been depressing to see something like the UK Office fizzle out over eight seasons....

Plus, since I don't have cable, it's easier to get through shorter shows by renting.

Thirty-two people in Somalia have been arrested and whipped for taking part in a traditional dance in rebel-held territory south of the capital Mogadishu.

The dancers were flogged in accordance with the strict implementation of Sharia law in the township of Balad, 30km north of Mogadishu, on Saturday.

Mohamed Sheikh Hussein, a Somali elder, said: "They were found dancing to traditional songs outside Balad last night and were flogged this morning. They were arrested by Islamist fighters."

Sheikh Abdirahim Isse Adow, a spokesman for the group claiming authority of the area, said those arrested had been warned several times against dancing.

"We arrested 25 women and seven men who were dancing near Balad. We released them after whipping them. We warned them many times, but they wouldn't listen," he said.

"The dancing of men and women together is illegal and totally against Islam. We neither killed them nor injured them, but only whipped them according to the Islamic law," Adow said.

Election spurs 'hundreds' of race threats, crimes

there is "a large subset of white people in this country who feel that they are losing everything they know, that the country their forefathers built has somehow been stolen from them."

Grant Griffin, a 46-year-old white Georgia native, expressed similar sentiments: "I believe our nation is ruined and has been for several decades and the election of Obama is merely the culmination of the change.

"If you had real change it would involve all the members of (Obama's) church being deported," he said.

Change in whatever form does not come easy, and a black president is "the most profound change in the field of race this country has experienced since the Civil War," said William Ferris, senior associate director of the Center for the Study of the American South at the University of North Carolina. "It's shaking the foundations on which the country has existed for centuries."

"Someone once said racism is like cancer," Ferris said. "It's never totally wiped out, it's in remission."

GravatarCIENFUEGOS. – An understanding of what will be needed to generalize the understanding of the Linux operating system was the essential outcome of the Youth Computing Club’s Free Software Festival, which was held in the central Cuban province of Cienfuegos.

The event, which noted the advances made in adopting the new system over the past few years, was made possible by several companies and institutions that have shifted to Linux.

At the festival, several presentations were made on the distributional principals, tools and advantages of the system, which is characterized by flexibility in that each user can modify the source code to personalize their operating version.

Dania Perez Antero, director of the Cienfuegos Computer Center, explained to JR that the event strengthened the base of knowledge on the subject.

The president of the Free Software Group of Cienfuegos, Alexei Seisdedo, explained that the main advantages to moving to the system are the technological independence that it offers, as well as the degree of security and reliability that can be reached after adopting it.

GravatarGeorge Osborne, the shadow chancellor, launched a new assault on Gordon Brown's economic policy last night, saying his profligate borrowing could provoke a run on sterling, or require a rise in interest rates that would plunge Britain deeper into recession.

Osborne said: "Sterling has devalued rapidly against the euro and the dollar. We are in danger, if the government is not careful, of having a proper sterling collapse, a run on the pound. The danger of a run on the pound is that it pushes up long-term interest rates, which is a huge burden on the economy. The more you borrow as a government and the more you have to sell the debt, the less attractive your currency seems."

Osborne's comments came as Brown arrived in Washington for a crisis meeting of the G20 after pledging that lower interest rates, tax breaks for the low-paid and measures to make the economy greener would be at the centre of Britain's response to the global recession.

The remarks expose a clear dividing line developing between Brown, who is calling for unfunded extra borrowing to boost the economy, and Osborne, who believes borrowing has reached dangerous levels. But the shadow chancellor risks accusations of provoking a run on the pound himself, or of making a false prediction if sterling recovers in the markets in the months to come.

.
pluege

yea, let's start with Rupert

GravatarUmmm . . . at the time Massoud was assassinated (9/9/2001), the Taliban controlled 90-95% of the country.

"Control" is relative. When the country is tired of the leadership, it pitches it out. And the Afghans were getting damned tired of the Taliban hacking people's heads off for infractions approximating jaywalking.

The warlords were not much better, but the Afghans actually wanted a return to local control of villages.

A good part of it was that the Taliban banned opium production in 2000 (well, perhaps except for what was helping to fund their operations) and a good part of the country was starving because they'd not made any plans for substitute crops. They were and are religious zealots, not state planners, so the results were predictable. That's where the Bushies come in. They gave the Taliban $42 million of in-kind aid (mostly grain) for the opium reductions, which had the effect of propping up the Taliban government at a time they were vulnerable. That was the carrot the Bushies used to get them to cancel the existing pipeline contracts with Argentina's Bridas (now BP Amoco Argentina).

At the same time, the Bushies were funneling unaccountable cash to Musharref, and there's no question that some of that money went to the Taliban via the ISI.

I'd say that the Bushies plain fucked it up, wouldn't you? And that's quite apart from the clusterfuck they've made of the country after the invasion....

Rush Limbaugh, the doyen of conservative talk radio hosts, last week blamed Mr Obama for continuing stock market falls: "This is an Obama recession, might turn into a depression," he said. "He hasn't done anything yet, but his ideas are killing the economy."

Concern at what Mr Obama's policies might bring has also sparked a 40 per cent rise in gun sales, from those worried that he will revive a lapsed ban on assault weapons.

"Gun sales doubled Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday last week," said Jim King, sporting goods manager at Thatcher's Ace Hardware in Baker City, Oregon. "We called one warehouse that went through 4,000 assault rifles in four days."

Mark Greene, a hunter and member of Gun Owners for Senator Obama, told Mr Obama's hometown newspaper, the Chicago Tribune, that some believe his election will create civil unrest in the US.

"There's a small contingent of folks... concerned that Obama's election is such a revolutionary change that it could portend mayhem. It's hysteria," he said...

...John Derbyshire, a columnist with the conservative magazine National Review, dismissed Mr Obama as a "shallow, ignorant, self-obsessed man" and mocked those conservatives "scratching around for shards of optimism - of Hope! - in the general wreckage".

GravatarMacau's government decides to save a strategically important industry: casinos Sheldon Adelson has been forced to dilute his controlling stake in Las Vegas Sands to prevent the casino owner from running out of money after agreeing to buy new shares issued in the group, which owns the Venetian casino.

The company on Tuesday said it would push ahead with plans to raise $2.1bn without seeking shareholder approval.

Any delay in the fundraising would “seriously jeopardise the ability to complete the offerings as well as the financial viability of the company”, it said.

Under the plan, Mr Adelson will invest about $525m in new shares and warrants. Mr Adelson, once one of the world’s richest men, will also convert the $475m in convertible notes that he and his family bought recently.

In all, the fundraising will generate $2.1bn for the beleaguered group, which has suspended development of casino projects in its Cotai Strip project in Macao, and will husband resources for developments in Singapore and Pennsylvania in the US.

Last week, the company said it was in danger of violating loan covenants if it did not raise extra cash.

GravatarDood, Pittsburgh is a cultural mecca.
Gomez

especially that eatery that serves the french fries IN the sandwich.

Gravatar...John Derbyshire, a columnist with the conservative magazine National Review, dismissed Mr Obama as a "shallow, ignorant, self-obsessed man"

Another nasty little pissant that doesn't concern himself with facts.

Shallow, ignorant, self-obsessed?

John, that's you old boy.

GravatarThere were a number of reflectory sentences regarding the state of mind of the Dead Moose before he was in fact slain.

The lose of our herbivourous pal's probiscus I regarded as necessary but clumsy. In edit that will probably be tightened up big time.

GravatarDeacon, you're quite some ways from the Corona fire, if I have a sense of geography at all.

Sylmar fire is 10% contained, but that's 90% not contained, and we're expecting sundowners.

GravatarCalifornians would adjust well to a Pittsburgh winter

Like time travel, that would be impossible.
billy b

As a 60-year Californian, born in LA but living mostly in the Bay Area, I will verify the impossibility.

GravatarOn the plus side, I'm watching the state burn down, comfortably wearing shorts, Hawaiian shirt, and flipflops.
Deacon Blues

Just hold your hose in your hand (:>), in case, & watch it burn......cold, I know, but what's a fella to do at this point? During the Liberty City Riot I holed up w/ a bottle of booze & a view of Miami in Flames.

GravatarShallow, ignorant, self-obsessed?

Bush. In a nutshell.

GravatarThe winters are relatively mild.

We are further south than you might think.

I'm in freaking Alabama, dude, and it's going to be 30F here tonight.

GravatarI'm a "Rehearsals For Retirement" man myself. He went off the Chicago all fired up and full of hope, only to get the shit kicked out of himself in Grant Park.

Where were you in Chicago, you know I didn't see you there...

There was a hue and cry when the Denver Post dropped it back in the 90s. Fundies were convinced they were being censored. The paper had to cave and put it back on.

GravatarToons, still okay at your end of the Valley?

GravatarIt seems that there are three fires in Orange County -- Brea, Corona, and Yorba Linda.

Yorba Linda

The Land of Nixon?

GravatarI used to be really into Phil Ochs when I was in college. I love Tapes from California, I ain't marching any more, and Small circle of friends..

Changes is one of my all time faves. Such a simple melody.

GravatarI'm in freaking Alabama, dude, and it's going to be 30F here tonight.
theodoric of athens

Its warmer here.

When we get a blizzard its because of a storm coming from the south.

The nasty weather hits Chicago, Buffalo and points north.

GravatarSallyh!!!!

You're alive!

GravatarAnd nothing catches on fire here unless we want it to.

GravatarDeacon, you're quite some ways from the Corona fire, if I have a sense of geography at all.

Sylmar fire is 10% contained, but that's 90% not contained, and we're expecting sundowners.

Sallyh, Grandmere Poissonniere

Yup, you're right. Gives you a sense of the scale of this thing.

Sounds like Rush is back on the oxy.

Gravatari miss the sun of Cairo, the wonderful cool evenings

the weather sucks here at the moment, its gray, drizzly and rains

makes one want to curl up and hibernate

GravatarThere was a hue and cry when the Denver Post dropped it back in the 90s. Fundies were convinced they were being censored. The paper had to cave and put it back on.
Deacon Blues

Fundies are funny like that.

Over at Ed's... yea Ed's place... they are all upset cause a KKK site was taken down by the host.

"Censoring free speech" they yell.

Nope, just killing hate speech. That's not allowed.

GravatarChicago is usually ten degrees colder than here in the winter.

GravatarI live in the perfect climate. Mild spring and fall. Just a few days over 90 in the summer, and about 11" of snow in the winter.

GravatarAndyMN -

Remember reading somewhere years ago that Sean Penn had bought the rights to Ochs' story, and there was a film in the development pipeline. Dunno what ever became of it, but I SILL want to see it.

GravatarPeople remember the Steelers Raiders Ice Bowl in the 70's.

That was a rarity.

And teh Raiders were pussies.

GravatarAndy, we weren't even ordered to evacuate in my area.  But Monsieur was getting breathless (asthma), so we headed to points south and East.

Claremont is quite lovely, and we found a place that would take our critters (we were half expecting them to say that the critters could stay and we couldn't).  I've been to some talks here in the past.

In the meantime, I need to find a market.  We ate all the honey roasted peanuts and vanilla JoJos in the car.  Essential parts of a balanced breakfast.

GravatarWomen working full time will be paid £369,000 less than their male counterparts over their lifetime, it was claimed yesterday, as new government figures emerged showing that the gender pay gap has widened over the past year.

Men are now paid 17.1% more than women for full-time work, a slight increase on last year, while the disparity in part-time wages is 36.6%, up from 35.8% in 2007, according to the Office of National Statistics' annual survey of hours and earnings.

That lifetime disparity would be enough to pay for 31 years of childcare or 22 new cars, the Equality and Human Rights Commission estimated, or to pay off the average student debt 18 times over.

Katherine Rake, director of the Fawcett Society, called the ONS figures "dire news" for women. "After years of painfully slow progress in closing the pay gap, we have now actually gone into reverse gear with the pay gap widening over 2008 for women working full and part time. This sadly demonstrates that the government has failed to take serious action to combat discrimination still facing women in the labour market."

The World Economic Forum found this week that the UK had dropped from 11th to 13th in the global gender equality league table, with Sri Lanka in 12th. The annual survey ranks countries in terms of equality of economic participation, access to education and healthcare, and political empowerment.

Gravatarthanks, Deacon. Needed a plugin, but it works now.

GravatarYorba Linda is Nixon country, yup. You can go visit his birthplace there. If that's your idea of a good time.

GravatarThere is a live television stream of one of the fires now threatening many homes in Yorba Linda or the Anaheim Hills.

It's at hhtp://media.myfoxla.com/live

It looks bad.

GravatarIt is rare that the temp gets below 30 degrees for an extended period of time here in the winter.

As soon as the sun comes out you're in the 30's.

GravatarAnd teh Raiders were pussies.

The 70's Raiders were pussies like Pittsburgh has mild winters.

GravatarI live in the perfect climate. Mild spring and fall. Just a few days over 90 in the summer, and about 11" of snow in the winter.

Perfect climate? Me too!

Early winter

Late winter

Next winter

What could be more perfect, but hard to get a full body tan without goosebump shadows.

GravatarI have been to Nixon's birthplace and museum. I chickened out on pissing on his grave. It's just roped off, nothing else.

GravatarIt's really too bad about Phil Ochs. He just played too many antiwar marches. People stopped taking him seriously.

Ochs was seriously mentally ill toward the end, for which he got no treatment to speak of. He'd lapse into an alternate, dark personality--a character he called "John Train," and at times, that was his identity for days on end.

How much of that was depression over his career, and how much was brain chemistry, we'll not likely know.

GravatarThe 70's Raiders were pussies like Pittsburgh has mild winters.

Cliff Branch was a wuss.

GravatarBarry, damn.  At least Minnesota gets road construction.

GravatarAfternoon, good people.

Sallyh, I'm glad you secured safe lodgings for you and yours.

GravatarUpdate: Nothing burning here.

GravatarFor those of you not In the Know, this fire situation is what is technically known as "a fucking mess."

GravatarGrowing up in Far Rockaway didn't help, either--believe me!

Think those are all the same fire, dubbed "Freeway" by CalFire, unless embers have touched off a couple more.

In what respect, Charlie?

Sorry.

GravatarDiane, the worst part is the expectation that we'll have sundowners tonight.

GravatarSallyh (continuing in Ralph Spoilsport vein), according to my careful prosthesis, you're kinda near (cue Mel Blanc) ........Rancho Cucamonga, no?

Could not play on ice.

Swann and Stallworth could.

GravatarIt would be OK if Pittsburgh sent us some rain today. I would completely dig a couple of inches of rain.

Gravatar"KBR Awarded Disaster Relief Contract by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Under Initiative for Emergency Power 11 Nov 2008 KBR today announced it has been awarded a disaster relief contract, valued at up to $75 million over a five-year period by the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Pittsburgh District, for its advance contract initiative for emergency power for the Western region of the United States. The disaster relief contract was created by the USACE to respond immediately to power emergencies resulting from a natural or manmade disaster. KBR will provide all labor, transportation, equipment, materials, supervision and required internal logistics support to perform generator set activities in the Western Region, Geographic Area 3. KBR services will mobilize immediately upon activation by USACE to the "disaster" area. The company will work to quickly provide emergency power to the critical public facilities designated by the State and FEMA as directed by the USACE."

Damn!

That is the worst possible scenario. I hope it isn't realized.

Gravatarmofo, not that close.  Would have to travel further east some distance.

Glad we left when we did;  people are being asked not to travel.

GravatarEvery time in the past several years when a major NFL playoff game was to be played here against a southern or western team in January, we've had 60 degree weather.

she is - that's good.

GravatarSouthbound 57 freeway now closed.

GravatarGomez---I'm a Fin fan (tho I have much love for the Steelers), & I recall during Perfect Season when Fins (due to pre-scheduling operative then) travelled to Pittsburgh for Champs. game, & caught a 60ish, low 70ish day in the deep of winter---helped 'em quite a bit, as you'd imaginge.

Let the grousing begin!

GravatarDeacon Blues I'd send you some of our rain gratis.

Alas, it comes with some fierce wind and you guys do not need that.

GravatarHere's a question for you guys:

Monsieur has not spoken with Mlle in ten months.  If her number shows up on caller ID, he hands me the phone.

She's screwed us at times, yes, but she's also been through a long series of horrible traumas.  It's not helpful that her father treats her with such contempt, and she's more than fully aware of this.

I finally told him he needed to contact his daughter--and that he was to invite her and her SO for Thanksgiving dinner.

This is important to me.

I think ten months to not speak to one's daughter, especially one who's really suffered, is becoming incredibly petty.  alternative views are welcomed.

Gravatar200+ unit apartment building now in flames in Anaheim Hills.

GravatarSo, I'm 20 miles (at least) from the Sylmar fire, and a good 10 miles from the Brea and Yorba Linda fires, but the entire SoCal basin has been advised that we can expect power outages as a result of those fires.

I find no solace in knowing KBR will be in charge of preventing that from happening.

GravatarOh, fuck. We're doomed!
Diane C. Barking-Mad | Homepage | 11.15.08 - 5:13 pm | #

I know.

What I am hopeing for is that National Guard will be brought back from unnecessary wars and used here at home where they should be doing this kind of relief. They would do it better and be far more accountable than the over priced KBR forigen owned company.

GravatarS H E E T S

GravatarGrowing up in Far Rockaway didn't help, either--believe me!

Don't think he spent all that much time there. His family moved there when he was a teenager, then moved to upstate NY, and not long after, his family sent him to military school in Virginia, and he then went to Ohio State.

His sister stayed in Far Rockaway, though. I think he stayed with her once he had gone badly downhill, and it was there that he hanged himself in 1976.

Not good.

That has to be a night mare.

Hey fire, burn the McMansions, not the apartment buildings.
