And as welcome break before the next world horror – please take a minute to enjoy the comedy stylings of AP’s own Ben Fellater:
For eight years, the nation has been led by a guy who relaxes by clearing brush in scorching heat and taking breakneck bike rides through the woods. He dishes out nicknames to world leaders, and even gave the German chancellor an impromptu, perhaps unwelcome, neck rub. He's annoyed when kept waiting and sticks relentlessly to routine. He stays optimistic in even the most dire circumstances, but readily tears up in public. He has little use for looking within himself, and only lately has done much looking back...

srael dropped leaflets over northern Gaza, signed by the commander of the Israeli military, urging residents to "leave the area immediately" for their own safety. "We are trying to be as humane as possible," Leibovich said. "... The civilians are not our target. We are looking only at militants, Hamas militants."
Leibovich added that Israel expects "a lengthy operation," and Defense Minister Ehud Barak is calling up thousands of reservists as part of the offensive.
Noah Shachtman added, "The week-plus-long air war killed nearly 450, and wounded another 2,050. The house-to-house fighting that lies ahead could be much deadlier."

It's true that Hamas refused to renew the cease-fire and started firing rockets.
But history did not begin at that point. Israel refused to live up to the June ceasefire which required that they lifted the Gaza blockade, which was nothing more than collective punishment.
Add to that numerous assassinations and other unreported incidents, and this is what we get. The media is complicit in helping the American people stay ignorant until the next 9/11...

Ken MacLeod put it better than I in this post - Nothing has done more to corrupt humanity than the attempt to civilise warfare. Just War Theory is an utter perversion of the moral sense, a doctrine of literally mediaeval barbarism, invented by clerics to regulate wars between Christian kings. Its finest moral discrimination to date is that it's legitimate to kill a munitions worker on his way to work, but a crime to kill him on his way home.
Yup, it's a construct to justify murder. And it always starts with "exceptional circumstances" when you decide that you aren't up against a "civilized, compassionate enemy" and can demonize them!

It tells us that to aim a bomb at an enemy soldier and kill a hundred civilians is - if the necessity is there - legitimate collateral damage, but to deliberately aim one bullet at one enemy civilian is murder. In its pedantic, casuistic jesuitry it still stinks of the cringing, quibbling fusspots who invented it, and retains too its usefulness to a useless and barbaric ruling class. It does nothing whatsoever to restrain their behaviour. Its only function is to befuddle those who oppose, protest and fight them. It justifies every horrific, predictable consequence of imperialist assault as an unintended consequence, and condemns every horrific, predictable consequence of resistance to that assault as an intended consequence.

The Israeli army has entered the Gaza Strip as it escalated its offensive on the eighth day of operations.
A column of tanks entered the besieged territory though the Beit Hanoun crossing shortly after nightfall on Saturday, as the Israeli cabinet said it had called up about 9,000 reservists as part of its preparations.
Alan Fisher, Al Jazeera's correspondent on the Israeli-Gaza border, said that he had witnessed the movement of tanks and armoured vehicles in the area.

Plus, the novelty of both Iraq and Afghanistan have worn off, and the soldiers aren't the scions of the Russerts, the Humes, or the O'Reillys, so who gives a rat's ass about them, anyways?

Actually iirc the brush clearing by Bush was actually code behavior (analogous to code language) meant for the wealthy ranchers in Texas. Somehow removing brush ('improving the land') was a means of avoiding some state environmental preserve laws.
Later it just became a worn out photo-op.

If you're talking about what's going on in Gaza, then you're quite mistaken. That is far from being another country's war. The US is deeply involved, ranging from the post Jan 2006 efforts to overthrow the elected Hamas gov't (aka Elliot's 'hard coup' brainchild); to the ongoing, crippling embargo, which has drawn plenty of cover via US veto power at the UN; to Israel's repeated (and ignored) violations of the ceasefire; to recent hostilities and the current ground invasion, which no doubt received green-lighting from the US.

It is time to face the fact that "dual loyalty" is no longer an anti-Semitic canard, but a fact -- and a problem -- in American public life. I would like to see anyone who denies this explain the activities of Martin Peretz, Alan Dershowitz, and Pam Geller in any other way.
George Washington warned: "[A] passionate attachment of one nation for another produces a variety of evils. ...[I]t gives to ambitious, corrupted, or deluded citizens (who devote themselves to the favorite nation), facility to betray or sacrifice the interests of their own country, without odium, sometimes even with popularity; gilding, with the appearances of a virtuous sense of obligation, a commendable deference for public opinion, or a laudable zeal for public good, the base or foolish compliances of ambition, corruption, or infatuation."
