Honestly, someone would have to give me at least $100 to watch that. The cost of me being sick is that high.
Honest to goodness there used to be an AM radio station in this town with the call letters, WTRU. It is no longer functioning but I would imagine that the designation is still available.
With the writers - just on this blog - available, why can't we get a radio station that can be simulcast on the internet that will be an all news channel?

The Clintons are a scrappy crew, and most Democrats have appreciated this at one point or another in the past. Most were grateful for their scrappiness when the bottom fell out in 1994. In just two years, Bill Clinton went from defending his relevancy to trouncing Bob Dole. That's the thing about the Clintons. They play until the buzzer sounds.

I watched a bit of Obama's rally. There are obvious plants in his audience. A guy claiming to be an Iraqi war vet, said he had talked to Hillary's campaign chairman for veteran's affairs and was told that the status quo was pretty good, which the Obama crowd bought hook, line and sinker. How low is Obama going to stoop? He knows better and the fact he didn't call it out implies to me that the guy was a plant.

Secretary Powell's recent presentation at the UN showed the extent to which we have Iraq under an audio and visual microscope. Given that, I was impressed not by the vastness of evidence presented by the Secretary, but rather by its sketchiness.

Although Sen. Obama voted for the legislation, he has spoken as if he opposed it on the campaign trail, criticizing it repeatedly. At a presidential debate he said "You can look at how Dick Cheney did his energy policy…he met with oil and gas companies forty times, and that's how they put together our energy policy." He's attributed the failure of our current energy policy to Congress's "failure to stand up to the lobbyists."
Sen. Obama's rhetoric blasting the policies of Vice President Dick Cheney and energy lobbyists can be stirring. But Obama's actions haven't matched his words.

Two soldiers involved in an altercation outside a city bar in which gunshots were fired pleaded guilty to misdemeanor handgun charges today and were sentenced to probation.
But a Baltimore judge agreed to delay signing the sentencing order, allowing the soldiers to leave Maryland and join their Fort Hood, Texas-based unit in Iraq for a 15-month tour in the war zone.
That's great. Two guys who bring guns when they go to a bar will be allowed to continue serving in the military. Lower the standards some more, Little Boots. This is working out so well.

Look, dumbass. only a few of us know how evil that act is. only a few. the Republicans would make mincemeat out of a candidate coming out against the PATRIOT ACT. Why do you think they framed it like that?
In 1994 Mel Reynolds, member of U.S. House of Representatives for Illinois's 2nd congressional district, was indicted for a sexual relationship with an underage campaign volunteer. Palmer filed for the Democratic nomination to his seat but was defeated in a special election held November 1995 by Jesse Jackson, Jr. She had, with a degree of formality that is disputed, anointed Barack Obama as her chosen successor in the State Senate, but after her defeat she filed to retain the Democratic nomination for the 13th District. Obama was able, however, to successfully challenge enough signatures to disqualify not only the incumbent but the other three candidates for the Democratic nomination as well, which he won unopposed.

Your naivete is embarrassing, but unsurprising
You mean stupidity right? You of course are far above me, and others like me, who only think we know how evil the Patriot Act is.
So evil in fact, it shall now be called the Act That Shall Not Be Named, or Spoken Of, for to do so, will be to invoke the ancient Spirit of Repub, the most feared of all Spirits, who can make mincemeat of things which are called Patriot, the most Powerful of all Names.

Given Senator John McCain’s signature stance on campaign finance reform, it was not surprising that he backed legislation last year requiring presidential candidates to pay the actual cost of flying on corporate jets. The law, which requires campaigns to pay charter rates when using such jets rather than cheaper first-class fares, was intended to reduce the influence of lobbyists and create a level financial playing field.
But over a seven-month period beginning last summer, Mr. McCain’s cash-short campaign gave itself an advantage by using a corporate jet owned by a company headed by his wife, Cindy McCain, according to public records. For five of those months, the plane was used almost exclusively for campaign-related purposes, those records show.
Mr. McCain’s campaign paid a total of $241,149 for the use of that plane from last August through February, records show. That amount is approximately the cost of chartering a similar jet for a month or two, according to industry estimates.
The senator was able to fly so inexpensively because the law specifically exempts aircraft owned by a candidate or his family or by a privately held company they control. The Federal Election Commission adopted rules in December to close the loophole — rules that would have required substantial payments by candidates using family-owned planes — but the agency soon lost the requisite number of commissioners needed to complete the rule making.
Give me a break, how old are you?

What difference does that make? I could never learn to be as obtuse and shallow as you if I lived to be 150. You very obviously are completely clueless as to how the political game is being played out right now, or you'd understand that elections cannot be won by exposing yourself to the Republican monster of super-patriotism. there are two issues: the war and the economy. the Patriot act can only be rolled back by a Democratic winner. A Dem has no chance of winning running against the patriot act.
why don't you run? See how long you'd last with that kind of childish outlook.

Wouldn't his children, if any, by his first wife be very close to the same age as his present wife?
Goddess forbid anybody should point this out in public or anything. I know nothing about his personal life beyond the unfortunate adultery with said present wife while still married to said first wife. Not of course that anybody should mention that either.

The very fact you claim that candidates for President need to fear Patriotism if they speak agaisnt an evil act with an evil name, is proof of that Change.
The fact that you are advocating silence in elections, silence in America of the very things that take our FREEDOMS away, is a very fucking SCARY thing.

McCain’s Compassion Tour
By GAIL COLLINS (edited by DWD)
John McCain — the Republican presidential nominee — has been visiting the working poor lately. Appalachia, New Orleans, Rust Belt factory towns. This is a good thing, and we applaud his efforts to show compassion and interest in people for whom his actual policies and experience are of no use whatsoever. Please remember that Senator McCain has never actually had a job that required him to work for a living other than being Cindy’s husband.
McCain’s special, “It’s Time for Action Tour” was in the impoverished Kentucky town of Inez on Wednesday, so he was unable to make it to Washington to vote on the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. This is the bill that would restore workers’ ability to go to court in cases of pay discrimination. It would have made no difference. He stated boldly that he would have voted against equal pay for women anyway. He is fearless when it comes to delivering unpleasant news to people who are probably not going to vote for him anyway. When you are insulated by staff and 100 million dollars, ten houses, and a lifetime of preferential treatment: it is easy to be stupid.

Hence my questions here. I have a recipe for wholewheat bread which should turn out ok, though it's not as fail-proof. I've never really learned to bake with dried yeast, though, and worry about the correct rates of substitution, because the ones the packet gives don't seem to be right.

There is nothing the least bit amusing about the our fucking political media. If it were not something that would get me banned I would really like to advocate violence against them.
Honestly, that situation with the vote in PA this week was the last time I will ever watch MSNBC concerning election returns. Pat Buchanan and the rest are liars and fools. Keith Olberman has his moments but they are not enough to counter Scarborough and the rest.
Then couple this with ABC/FOX/CBS/CNN there simply is nothing even approaching intelligence or rationality in the national media. They are ALL - with so few exceptions that they literally do not matter - liars, fools, and people who have nothing but contempt for American citizens and see us as marks to be fleeced.
You name it: they have it. Racism. Sexism. Jingoism. Xenophobia. Bigotry of all sorts. Contempt for poor people. Discriminate by class. They are the worst people I have ever seen and they believe that we envy them. Maybe we do. What does that make us?

Eichidne, have you tried that "New York Times" bread recipe that uses a very tiny amount of yeast and an incredible rising time, something like 18-24 hours? Haven't done it myself being not much of a bread-baker but every time they run a story about it all the comments are raves.
I have the recipe and just looked at it. The initial rising time is 16 hours, so it's something that has to be planned carefully. I guess I could start the dough now...

It's a joke. If Obama gets the nom, McCain will eat him up. Clinton says, well, I told you so, while secretly happy that she don't have to deal with the whole fucking mess that is America and Iraq. And she is pretty much assured the Presidency the next time she runs.
Four more years of the same shit, all because Obama was so arrogant and eogtistical that he let himself be used by both sides, to set up a future that is acceptable to both sides, excluding anything he thinks is really happening.

And try Bob's Red Mill for supplies. They have graham flour (which if they follow Dr. Graham's rules is nothing but whole-wheat flour) and quite a number of other varieties. I assume you are looking for hard wheat for bread making; most of what's sold here is the soft red kind, although not labeled as such.

Your assuptions are those of an idiot loser. If Obama gets the nomination, he will win. Case closed. Unless assholes like you sit on their fat asses and do nothing to change things. Obama only loses if you don't help; it's that simple. Ned Lamont came from nowhere to defeat Lieberman in the primary, he was counted out time and time again. He won, and I helped. That's how it's done. Obama can and will win, unless this foolishness continues into October. Unfortunately, Clinton is too pigheaded to realize the absolute undefeatability of Obama/Clinton. I think Obama knows how to speak to people if he gets the opportunity to speak directly. And he will as the Democratic nominee. Yes, through all the media filtration and McCain boosting.
It will be a difficult campaign. But it will be a huge election for the US.

met a buddy of mine for a beer earlier tonight at the only tavern in a small town of maybe 200 folks. more accurately, it's an artists colony as the town is dominated by sculptors, potters, painters, etc.
a guy walks in that i've seen there before. dude can't be but 5' tall. he's obviously wound up and starts doing a littany of short jokes (way overcompensating) that aren't even funny, or more accurately, are downright crude. then he moves on to some distasteful ethnic/sexist crap making most of the patrons quite uncomfortable. loud and obnoxious would be an understatement.
then he points out that he lives on an acreage near there and starts pissing and moaning about a new 200' windtower that is just beginning to be erected directly across the road from his front door. he goes on and on about it ad nauseum. people are making eye contact with each other as no one knows how to shut the stupid fucker up.
when he finally stops to take a breath my usually subdued buddy, who is sitting right next to him up at the bar, turns to him says, 'buddy, i'd look at it this way. at least you won't have to worry about walking into one of the fucking rotors...'
brought the house down.

Mr. McCain is not only burdened with the most despised president in his own 71-year lifetime, but he’s getting none of the seasoning that he, no less than the Democrats, needs to compete in the fall. Age is as much an issue as race and gender in this campaign. Mr. McCain will have to prove not merely that he can keep to the physical rigors of his schedule and fend off investigations of his ties to lobbyists and developers. He also must show he can think and speak fluently about the domestic issues that are gripping the country. Picture him debating either Democrat about health care, the mortgage crisis, stagnant middle-class wages, rice rationing at Costco. It’s not pretty.
Insane McCain should just retire and become a greeter at a local Walmart. Then again with his short temper maybe not.

Yeah...I had to think twice about using a redneck. Although the term "redneck" actually came from striking miners in Virginia who fought the mine owner, their hired goons and the national guard. The term came because they wore red bandana around their necks.

"The lasting image of President Bush at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner may be this: bouncing slightly off-beat with a gleeful smile on his face and a baton in his hand last night as he conducted 'The President's Own' U.S. Marine Band through a medley of patriotic songs.
Leave it to Bush to shake up an event that, after 93 years, has become as traditional, perhaps even formulaic, in its trappings as a recipe: Start with Hollywood glamour. Add heaping spoonfuls of bona fide Beltway celebrity, and stir. Top with the president of the United States. Place in an overly warm hotel ballroom for several hours, then serve."

As for the last, not a chance, not after his appearance two years ago, when Colbert, appearing as his conservative alter ego, drew nervous laughs as he chastised the audience. "I have nothing but contempt for those people," Colbert said of the media.

Administration Says Particulars May Trump Geneva Protections
By Joby Warrick
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, April 27, 2008; A11
The Geneva Conventions' ban on "outrages against personal dignity" does not automatically apply to terrorism suspects in the custody of U.S. intelligence agencies, the Justice Department has suggested to Congress in recent letters that lay out the Bush administration's interpretation of the international treaty.
...
"Some prohibitions . . . such as the prohibition on 'outrages against personal dignity,' do invite the consideration of the circumstances surrounding the action," Brian A. Benczkowski, the principal deputy assistant attorney general, asserted in one of the letters.
I read a comment at another site that was very interesting about martial law.
Notice how the MSM keeps repeating what would happen at the democratic convention if the DNC handed Hillary the parties nomination. They keep saying their would be riots. Are they planting the seed in the minds of Obama supporters? Is it a done deal?
Will the super delegates hand Hillary the victory? If riots took place across the country is this the situation Bush would need to call for martial law?

NEW YORK (AP) - Hundreds of angry people marched through Harlem on Saturday after the Rev. Al Sharpton promised to "close this city down" to protest the acquittals of three police detectives in the 50-shot barrage that killed a groom on his wedding day and wounded two friends.
"We strategically know how to stop the city so people stand still and realize that you do not have the right to shoot down unarmed, innocent civilians," Sharpton told an overflow crowd of several hundred people at his National Action Network office in the historically black Manhattan neighborhood. "This city is going to deal with the blood of Sean Bell."

On October 18, 1974, Mary Woodson, a longtime friend of Al Green, assaulted him, then killed herself. It is believed that she ardently wished to be more than just a friend to Al Green. One night, she left the guest quarters, then entered the main section of the house without permission. She sneaked into his bathroom to make a surprise attack. With no warning whatsoever, she threw a large pot of sticky boiling grits over him as he was undressed and preparing to shower. As Al Green writhed in pain, she ran into another part of the house and committed suicide by shooting herself.

KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Afghan President Hamid Karzai and other dignitaries quickly scrambled toward safety when the sound of gunfire and explosions in the distance interrupted a military ceremony they were attending in Kabul Sunday morning.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai was unharmed after an attack by Taliban forces at a military ceremony.
The Taliban immediately claimed responsibility for the attack which happened at a Mujahideen Day ceremony, honoring those who fought against the Soviet Union after it invaded Afghanistan in 1979.
Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mojahed issued a statement:
"Six of our Fedayeen martyrs entered to the stadium for the ceremony. They were heavily armed with mortars and machine guns. This was an organized attack. When the national anthem started, they started the attack. Three were killed and three have survived."
The Taliban also claimed its fighters were within 30 yards of the reviewing stand where Karzai and other dignitaries were standing.
ahem. i "suggest" a few of those ...

well, the goddamned 'airport' wireless internet broadcasting box went forblunget. tried resetting it according to hoyle - nothing. i made plans to go into an apple store tomorrow, but i wouldn't survive as an engineer if i wasn't irrationaly stubborn. so i tried something random: i turned it the other way around and plugged it in that way. why not?
Good. About time this guy stopped getting a free ride.
I am sure that various republican members of congress will be screaming about this the way they were about Pelosi demanding a larger jet to go back and forth to California.

we used to do that a lot in the 80s becuz the network boards we would stick in a motherboard slot would get jiggled loose. we'd send two harware engineers halfway across town to the site - one to distract the owner, the other to give the cpu box a whack. that would always settle the network board right back in
and then you bill them a nice little service charge
you know the old joke "why did you charge me $100 bucks? all you did was hit it with a hammer!"
itemized bill:
hitting unit with a hammer: $1.00
knowing where to hit it: $99.00
hitting unit with a hammer: $1.00
knowing where to hit it: $99.00

well, it's different in software. the engineers fresh out of school usually try to figure things out logically. this will only take you so far. sometimes you have no way of finding out enough about a software component to debug it down to the bits, so you have to start screwing around with it randomly to see if you can shake out some new information. i call this 'poking it with a stick'
ok - there's at least 2 software geeks here - question: when a project is a total cluster fuck, how do you describe it when it gets even worse? 'cluster-fuckier' or is it now more of a 'clustery fuck'?

i know this concept well. another is the program that's been running for n amount of time, hasn't changed, and suddenly stops working for some reason. i blame this on 'code decay'.

that's what you tell the other engineers. to the managers, you say "we are going to re-architect the data flow and refactor the object hierarchy"
i blame this on 'code decay'.
TidyCat | 04.27.08 - 5:25 am | #
code decay is real!
there will always be fragile assumptions in the code. absolutely bullet proof code is impossible to write, and would run like frozen molasses anyway because of all the checking it would have to do. so there are fragile assumption
Okay, who are the other two people?

I have a friend who was brought into a project with a major bank. They were running 8-bit code to do trades and deals. A large part of his job was providing fixes. Neither his company nor the bank were willing to invest in writing better software.

i've been doing c# for the last four months. i have to say it really IS java as microsoft would write it. but even so it's not too bad
the UI designer thing is good up to a point, but it writes lousy code. the old MFC designer is much better solely because the code it writes goes into the .rc file, which you rarely need to look at

Duane V, Too Serious - you can expect a visit from my ...co-workers ... shortly.
jeremy brett, acording to the wikipedia, died at the age of 61 in 1995. he worked a lot as an actor most of his life, doing a lot of shakespeare and suchlike:
Brett joked that, as an actor, he was rarely allowed into the 20th century and never into the present day.
his relationship with sherlock holmes seems to have been deeper than we knew!
Brett suffered from bipolar disorder (commonly known as manic depression), which worsened after the death of his second wife, Joan Wilson, on July 4, 1985. She died shortly after Brett finished filming Holmes’ "death" in The Final Problem. He took a break from filming the Holmes series. When he returned to film new episodes in 1986, however, grief and the stressful shooting schedule aggravated his disorder. "Holmes was threatening me. He became the dark side of the moon because he is moody and solitary and I am sociable and gregarious. It got dangerous for me." [4]
He suffered a full-blown manic depressive crisis and was hospitalized. During the last decade of his life, Brett was treated in hospital several times for his mental illness, and his health and appearance visibly deteriorated by the time he completed the later episodes of the Sherlock Holmes series. During his later years, he discussed the illness candidly, encouraging people to recognise its symptoms and seek help.
There were plans to film all the Holmes stories, but Brett died of heart failure at his London home before the project could be completed
