GravatarWinter in America

Because it is, you know.

GravatarCraig Ferguson can really deliver a joke. That's the mark of a great comedian. They can deliver and time a joke in such a way as to make even bad material funny. America doesn't make comedians like this. Ferguson is as good as any of the great comedians from the UK. He has complete control of the room. This performance by Ferguson is a revelation.

Honestly, someone would have to give me at least $100 to watch that. The cost of me being sick is that high.

Honest to goodness there used to be an AM radio station in this town with the call letters, WTRU. It is no longer functioning but I would imagine that the designation is still available.

With the writers - just on this blog - available, why can't we get a radio station that can be simulcast on the internet that will be an all news channel?

GravatarThey need to realize that the Clintons have been like the only extremely successful Dems in like the past two or three decades!

GravatarThe Clintons are a scrappy crew, and most Democrats have appreciated this at one point or another in the past. Most were grateful for their scrappiness when the bottom fell out in 1994. In just two years, Bill Clinton went from defending his relevancy to trouncing Bob Dole. That's the thing about the Clintons. They play until the buzzer sounds.

GravatarI watched a bit of Obama's rally. There are obvious plants in his audience. A guy claiming to be an Iraqi war vet, said he had talked to Hillary's campaign chairman for veteran's affairs and was told that the status quo was pretty good, which the Obama crowd bought hook, line and sinker. How low is Obama going to stoop? He knows better and the fact he didn't call it out implies to me that the guy was a plant.

GravatarSo Chimpy's farewell to the press corpse was to enlist them in one more round of war cheerleading.

These are legitimate questions I have not seen asked. As a resident of a border state, it is a big thing. I don't have a passport at this time so I guess I can't go to Canada anymore till I get one. How stupid is that? We used to go all of the time. Not a big deal.

And the first part of Noonan's column before she got stupid was decent as well. We are shuffling in the airports losing our dignity to rent a cops, having our privacy invaded for what?

This shit does not make any sense.

GravatarBut Powell does know fakeness, intimately.

From Greenwald: Howard Dean's prescient reaction to the Colin Powell U.N. slideshow, which Dean delivered in a speech on Febraury 17, 2003 at Drake University:

Secretary Powell's recent presentation at the UN showed the extent to which we have Iraq under an audio and visual microscope. Given that, I was impressed not by the vastness of evidence presented by the Secretary, but rather by its sketchiness.

GravatarAlthough Sen. Obama voted for the legislation, he has spoken as if he opposed it on the campaign trail, criticizing it repeatedly. At a presidential debate he said "You can look at how Dick Cheney did his energy policy…he met with oil and gas companies forty times, and that's how they put together our energy policy." He's attributed the failure of our current energy policy to Congress's "failure to stand up to the lobbyists."
Sen. Obama's rhetoric blasting the policies of Vice President Dick Cheney and energy lobbyists can be stirring. But Obama's actions haven't matched his words.

GravatarJudge delays sentencing so soldiers can deploy to Iraq.

Two soldiers involved in an altercation outside a city bar in which gunshots were fired pleaded guilty to misdemeanor handgun charges today and were sentenced to probation.

But a Baltimore judge agreed to delay signing the sentencing order, allowing the soldiers to leave Maryland and join their Fort Hood, Texas-based unit in Iraq for a 15-month tour in the war zone.

That's great. Two guys who bring guns when they go to a bar will be allowed to continue serving in the military. Lower the standards some more, Little Boots. This is working out so well.

Yes, the military intervened in this case to make sure the sentence was delayed.

GravatarIn 1994 Mel Reynolds, member of U.S. House of Representatives for Illinois's 2nd congressional district, was indicted for a sexual relationship with an underage campaign volunteer. Palmer filed for the Democratic nomination to his seat but was defeated in a special election held November 1995 by Jesse Jackson, Jr. She had, with a degree of formality that is disputed, anointed Barack Obama as her chosen successor in the State Senate, but after her defeat she filed to retain the Democratic nomination for the 13th District. Obama was able, however, to successfully challenge enough signatures to disqualify not only the incumbent but the other three candidates for the Democratic nomination as well, which he won unopposed.

Give me a break, how old are you?

GravatarGiven Senator John McCain’s signature stance on campaign finance reform, it was not surprising that he backed legislation last year requiring presidential candidates to pay the actual cost of flying on corporate jets. The law, which requires campaigns to pay charter rates when using such jets rather than cheaper first-class fares, was intended to reduce the influence of lobbyists and create a level financial playing field.

But over a seven-month period beginning last summer, Mr. McCain’s cash-short campaign gave itself an advantage by using a corporate jet owned by a company headed by his wife, Cindy McCain, according to public records. For five of those months, the plane was used almost exclusively for campaign-related purposes, those records show.

Mr. McCain’s campaign paid a total of $241,149 for the use of that plane from last August through February, records show. That amount is approximately the cost of chartering a similar jet for a month or two, according to industry estimates.

The senator was able to fly so inexpensively because the law specifically exempts aircraft owned by a candidate or his family or by a privately held company they control. The Federal Election Commission adopted rules in December to close the loophole — rules that would have required substantial payments by candidates using family-owned planes — but the agency soon lost the requisite number of commissioners needed to complete the rule making.

What difference does that make? I could never learn to be as obtuse and shallow as you if I lived to be 150. You very obviously are completely clueless as to how the political game is being played out right now, or you'd understand that elections cannot be won by exposing yourself to the Republican monster of super-patriotism. there are two issues: the war and the economy. the Patriot act can only be rolled back by a Democratic winner. A Dem has no chance of winning running against the patriot act.

why don't you run? See how long you'd last with that kind of childish outlook.

GravatarSegundo.

Can you imagine if Hillary or Barack had children from a previous marriage?

Serious.

Gravatar haven't been keeping up; izat a child by his first or second wife?

Wouldn't his children, if any, by his first wife be very close to the same age as his present wife?

Goddess forbid anybody should point this out in public or anything. I know nothing about his personal life beyond the unfortunate adultery with said present wife while still married to said first wife. Not of course that anybody should mention that either.

GravatarWhat you need to understand, child, is it doesn't matter who wins the election.

Things have Changed.

The very fact you claim that candidates for President need to fear Patriotism if they speak agaisnt an evil act with an evil name, is proof of that Change.

The fact that you are advocating silence in elections, silence in America of the very things that take our FREEDOMS away, is a very fucking SCARY thing.

It should be FOUGHT against. It should be spoken of constantly, Freedom at HOME, Freedom in AMERICA for AMERICANS should be the TOP priority in any election.

America used to equal freedom. Now you tell me that freedom can't even be spoken of.

Federal "Three Strikes" in the 1994 Crime Bill

"- Tossing third-time felons into prison for life - "three strikes, you're out" - while allowing the release of some over age 70 after they serve 30 years. The first two felonies could be state crimes of violence or drugs, but the third must be a violent crime and must be adjudicated in federal court."

You are an ass. that's not news. You have the emotional maturity of a 7-year-old, without the intelligence. that's not news either. I said nothing of the candidates fearing Patriotism. I said that they will be crucified by the rightwing-owned press, and I was right. Silence is a tactic. I have no doubt that President Obama will roll back the Patriot Act. I have no doubt that he will lose if he promises that. I'm sorry that you're a fucking moron and don't understand politics, but I am not responsible for idiots like you and bugs, who are exactly the reason that we are in such deep shit.

Energy Companies Got Billions...

$6 Billion in subsidies to the oil and gas industgry

$12 Billion in subsidies to the nuclear power industry.

GravatarHere's a teaser.

McCain’s Compassion Tour

By GAIL COLLINS (edited by DWD)

John McCain — the Republican presidential nominee — has been visiting the working poor lately. Appalachia, New Orleans, Rust Belt factory towns. This is a good thing, and we applaud his efforts to show compassion and interest in people for whom his actual policies and experience are of no use whatsoever. Please remember that Senator McCain has never actually had a job that required him to work for a living other than being Cindy’s husband.

McCain’s special, “It’s Time for Action Tour” was in the impoverished Kentucky town of Inez on Wednesday, so he was unable to make it to Washington to vote on the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. This is the bill that would restore workers’ ability to go to court in cases of pay discrimination. It would have made no difference. He stated boldly that he would have voted against equal pay for women anyway. He is fearless when it comes to delivering unpleasant news to people who are probably not going to vote for him anyway. When you are insulated by staff and 100 million dollars, ten houses, and a lifetime of preferential treatment: it is easy to be stupid.

GravatarNo, babe. You can't replace white flour with whole wheat flour in a bread recipe. You will end up with, as I did when I tried it, a gelatinous glob of cement. All things , I suppose, in moderation.

Hence my questions here. I have a recipe for wholewheat bread which should turn out ok, though it's not as fail-proof. I've never really learned to bake with dried yeast, though, and worry about the correct rates of substitution, because the ones the packet gives don't seem to be right.

GravatarIt's like being the sophomore sitting in the back of the classroom of a more senior class and listening in to the kewl kidz' banter. I like hangin' in this joint.

GravatarSteveLG, I'm intrigued by the proposed AustinEschacon in June. I will be going to way-the-hell-and-gone South Texas for a June 20 wedding, my nephew's. It's pretty daunting. If there were a way to stop off in Austin, and meet some atriots, it would make the difference in the fly/drive calculus. I'm a UT alum and I'd like to show my kiddo around the town, COUGH-Barton Springs- cough. It's a tough calculation, but an atriots' gathering at the right time might do it for me.

The bought and paid for media laughing at the bought and paid for president
pigboy

There is nothing the least bit amusing about the our fucking political media. If it were not something that would get me banned I would really like to advocate violence against them.

Honestly, that situation with the vote in PA this week was the last time I will ever watch MSNBC concerning election returns. Pat Buchanan and the rest are liars and fools. Keith Olberman has his moments but they are not enough to counter Scarborough and the rest.

Then couple this with ABC/FOX/CBS/CNN there simply is nothing even approaching intelligence or rationality in the national media. They are ALL - with so few exceptions that they literally do not matter - liars, fools, and people who have nothing but contempt for American citizens and see us as marks to be fleeced.

You name it: they have it. Racism. Sexism. Jingoism. Xenophobia. Bigotry of all sorts. Contempt for poor people. Discriminate by class. They are the worst people I have ever seen and they believe that we envy them. Maybe we do. What does that make us?

GravatarJust to be safe, I usually double the yeast in a bread recipe, if I'm using dried yeast. May not make any difference, but can't hurt, right?

Don't know, but I do love making bread in the summer, as I wrap up the rising dough and set it outside to warm in the outdoor heat. Too much fun.

Gravatar"I used to have a dog that at some point quit asking to go out and instead the moment you turned your back would sneak into the other room and shit all over the floor."

I have trouble with the flour types. The local stores here don't seem to stock the same kinds of flour as are used in the recipe I like. There's no flour for rolls, no graham flour and so on.

Four more years of the same shit, all because Obama was so arrogant and eogtistical that he let himself be used by both sides, to set up a future that is acceptable to both sides, excluding anything he thinks is really happening.

Your assuptions are those of an idiot loser. If Obama gets the nomination, he will win. Case closed. Unless assholes like you sit on their fat asses and do nothing to change things. Obama only loses if you don't help; it's that simple. Ned Lamont came from nowhere to defeat Lieberman in the primary, he was counted out time and time again. He won, and I helped. That's how it's done. Obama can and will win, unless this foolishness continues into October. Unfortunately, Clinton is too pigheaded to realize the absolute undefeatability of Obama/Clinton. But, that's politics. Ego and ambition.

Gravatar"If Obama gets the nom, McCain will eat him up."

GravatarIf Obama gets the nom, McCain will eat him up.

No, I don't think so.

I think Obama knows how to speak to people if he gets the opportunity to speak directly. And he will as the Democratic nominee. Yes, through all the media filtration and McCain boosting.

It will be a difficult campaign. But it will be a huge election for the US.

For its government, and for its relationship with its corporate media.

GravatarIf McCain actually does debate Obama, Obama will make him look like the senile, crazy old psycho whore that he is.."Maverick", my ass.

GravatarDigging my little bag of graham flour out of the cupboard to check the maker's name, I look at it closely and discover it has flour bugs in it. So of course right under the Bob's name and URL I see, for the first time because it is in little teeny print "Best kept frozen...."

Gravatar"Obama will make him look like the senile, crazy old psycho whore that he is.."

yes, but the press will frame it as 'angry black man mugs senior citizen war hero.'

GravatarDemocracy as we know it?

Is that the kind that you say prohibits candidates from speaking openly about their feelings on the Patriot Act, passports, no fly lists and etc???

Gravatarps, they are probably expensive

but they are beautiful

Gravatarthe press will be the main targets of the next revolution

It always is!

GravatarI mean the detachment is so incredible. I guess I can begin to understand how this press is only to ask questions about Obamas pastor rather than things that matter to viewers.
pigboy

The press corpse is derelict in its duty. It has sold out the entire country. They aren't whores, whores having the integrity to buck social mores, they're worse. They're cowards whose American flag lapel pins belie their lack of patriotism.

GravatarMy sister made that bread that takes 18 hours. She said it was really good. Sent me the recipe but I haven't tried it yet.

No, you moron, that's GOP-style totalitarianism, the kind whose future you are guaranteeing with your defeatist attitude. Would Clinton roll back the patriot act? obama would. McCain wouldn't. Where's Clinton on this subject?

Gravatarthat's some nice shit.

Hey, that's my outlook on such things, for any insectile errata that small anyway. I figure our ancestors for all but the last tiny sliver of our history regarded any foodstuff far too valuble to throw away for something as trivial as that, and they (mostly) survived. Or if they croaked it sure wasn't from eating flour bugs.

Other family members however do not share my elevated approach on such matters, so...

You said they are AFRAID to mention ot, or they will be turned into mincemeat pies and fed to the lions.

Remember? You are one of the few Americans that are not stoopid, and therefore you understand the evil that must not be named, remember? Because it is called the Patriot Act, you claim that it has x to the n hitpoints agsint all negative attention by candidates.

Right?

Gravatar"the press will frame it as 'angry black man mugs senior citizen war hero.'"

They'll try to, but Obama doesn't have the typical delivery of the "angry black man". If anything, he'll goad McCrazy into one of his temper tantrums, which Obama will then use to bring temperament into the equation.

Age and treachery will prevail over youth and ability is my motto.

Gravatarmet a buddy of mine for a beer earlier tonight at the only tavern in a small town of maybe 200 folks. more accurately, it's an artists colony as the town is dominated by sculptors, potters, painters, etc.

a guy walks in that i've seen there before. dude can't be but 5' tall. he's obviously wound up and starts doing a littany of short jokes (way overcompensating) that aren't even funny, or more accurately, are downright crude. then he moves on to some distasteful ethnic/sexist crap making most of the patrons quite uncomfortable. loud and obnoxious would be an understatement.

then he points out that he lives on an acreage near there and starts pissing and moaning about a new 200' windtower that is just beginning to be erected directly across the road from his front door. he goes on and on about it ad nauseum. people are making eye contact with each other as no one knows how to shut the stupid fucker up.

when he finally stops to take a breath my usually subdued buddy, who is sitting right next to him up at the bar, turns to him says, 'buddy, i'd look at it this way. at least you won't have to worry about walking into one of the fucking rotors...'

brought the house down.

GravatarMr. McCain is not only burdened with the most despised president in his own 71-year lifetime, but he’s getting none of the seasoning that he, no less than the Democrats, needs to compete in the fall. Age is as much an issue as race and gender in this campaign. Mr. McCain will have to prove not merely that he can keep to the physical rigors of his schedule and fend off investigations of his ties to lobbyists and developers. He also must show he can think and speak fluently about the domestic issues that are gripping the country. Picture him debating either Democrat about health care, the mortgage crisis, stagnant middle-class wages, rice rationing at Costco. It’s not pretty.

Frank Rich

GravatarInsane McCain should just retire and become a greeter at a local Walmart. Then again with his short temper maybe not.

Hillary grows more and more glowy as Obama grows more and more wan.

Is she draining him of his precious bodily fluids? Leeching his magic? Siphoning off his aura?

It used to be that he was incandescent and she was merely inveterate. Now she’s bristling with life force, and he looks like he wants to run away somewhere for three months by himself and smoke.

Please do not let Molly Ivors' head explode.

GravatarMcCain may try to spin that ol' Reagan line about not holding Mondale's "youth and inexperience" against him, but I don't think it's gonna work.

And for what it's worth, I think the Republicans could nominate Mother Teresa (were she still living), and the Democrats Richard Nixon (were he still living), and the Republicans would STILL lose the White House in November.

700K new Democrats in PA. 300K in VA. 130K and rising in IN.

Leave it to Bush to shake up an event that, after 93 years, has become as traditional, perhaps even formulaic, in its trappings as a recipe: Start with Hollywood glamour. Add heaping spoonfuls of bona fide Beltway celebrity, and stir. Top with the president of the United States. Place in an overly warm hotel ballroom for several hours, then serve."

GravatarAdministration Says Particulars May Trump Geneva Protections

By Joby Warrick
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, April 27, 2008; A11

The Geneva Conventions' ban on "outrages against personal dignity" does not automatically apply to terrorism suspects in the custody of U.S. intelligence agencies, the Justice Department has suggested to Congress in recent letters that lay out the Bush administration's interpretation of the international treaty.
...
"Some prohibitions . . . such as the prohibition on 'outrages against personal dignity,' do invite the consideration of the circumstances surrounding the action," Brian A. Benczkowski, the principal deputy assistant attorney general, asserted in one of the letters.

GravatarI read a comment at another site that was very interesting about martial law.

Notice how the MSM keeps repeating what would happen at the democratic convention if the DNC handed Hillary the parties nomination. They keep saying their would be riots. Are they planting the seed in the minds of Obama supporters? Is it a done deal?

Will the super delegates hand Hillary the victory? If riots took place across the country is this the situation Bush would need to call for martial law?

"We strategically know how to stop the city so people stand still and realize that you do not have the right to shoot down unarmed, innocent civilians," Sharpton told an overflow crowd of several hundred people at his National Action Network office in the historically black Manhattan neighborhood. When I was younger and healthier I burned myself on the altar of small business, working endless hours trying to do everything for the nursery I ran to make it as perfect as possible. GravatarOn October 18, 1974, Mary Woodson, a longtime friend of Al Green, assaulted him, then killed herself. It is believed that she ardently wished to be more than just a friend to Al Green. One night, she left the guest quarters, then entered the main section of the house without permission. She sneaked into his bathroom to make a surprise attack. With no warning whatsoever, she threw a large pot of sticky boiling grits over him as he was undressed and preparing to shower. As Al Green writhed in pain, she ran into another part of the house and committed suicide by shooting herself.

GravatarKABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Afghan President Hamid Karzai and other dignitaries quickly scrambled toward safety when the sound of gunfire and explosions in the distance interrupted a military ceremony they were attending in Kabul Sunday morning.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai was unharmed after an attack by Taliban forces at a military ceremony.

The Taliban immediately claimed responsibility for the attack which happened at a Mujahideen Day ceremony, honoring those who fought against the Soviet Union after it invaded Afghanistan in 1979.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mojahed issued a statement:

"Six of our Fedayeen martyrs entered to the stadium for the ceremony. They were heavily armed with mortars and machine guns. This was an organized attack. When the national anthem started, they started the attack. Three were killed and three have survived."

The Taliban also claimed its fighters were within 30 yards of the reviewing stand where Karzai and other dignitaries were standing.

Very nice.

Gravatari am a software engineer. i have learned over the years that if you have tried everything logical and you still can't make it work, start to try some random shit. i call this 'engineering by monkeying around'.

well, the goddamned 'airport' wireless internet broadcasting box went forblunget. tried resetting it according to hoyle - nothing. i made plans to go into an apple store tomorrow, but i wouldn't survive as an engineer if i wasn't irrationaly stubborn. so i tried something random: i turned it the other way around and plugged it in that way. why not?

now it works like a charm

.

GravatarGood. About time this guy stopped getting a free ride.

I am sure that various republican members of congress will be screaming about this the way they were about Pelosi demanding a larger jet to go back and forth to California.

The reason why if the teevee is on the fritz, you slap it upside the head..A method as old as time.

Gravatari'm a fan of 'percussive maintenance' myself but i do a lot of by monkeying around' too

we used to do that a lot in the 80s becuz the network boards we would stick in a motherboard slot would get jiggled loose. we'd send two harware engineers halfway across town to the site - one to distract the owner, the other to give the cpu box a whack. that would always settle the network board right back in

and then you bill them a nice little service charge

you know the old joke "why did you charge me $100 bucks? all you did was hit it with a hammer!"

itemized bill:

hitting unit with a hammer: $1.00
knowing where to hit it: $99.00

.

Gravatarbetter trolls, please!

and avoiding having to explain exactly how your 'fix' worked? pricelesser!

Gravatarwell, it's different in software. the engineers fresh out of school usually try to figure things out logically. this will only take you so far. sometimes you have no way of finding out enough about a software component to debug it down to the bits, so you have to start screwing around with it randomly to see if you can shake out some new information. i call this 'poking it with a stick'

.

Gravatarok - there's at least 2 software geeks here - question: when a project is a total cluster fuck, how do you describe it when it gets even worse? 'cluster-fuckier' or is it now more of a 'clustery fuck'?

Gravatari call this 'poking it with a stick'

i know this concept well. another is the program that's been running for n amount of time, hasn't changed, and suddenly stops working for some reason. i blame this on 'code decay'.

Gravatarwhen a project is a total cluster fuck, how do you describe it when it gets even worse?

I was always liked the phrase, "goat rodeo".

that's what you tell the other engineers. to the managers, you say "we are going to re-architect the data flow and refactor the object hierarchy"

.

Gravatarrefactor! oh yes! that can take months! what a beautiful concept (read: fuck! we have to re-write the whole damn thing!)

Gravatari blame this on 'code decay'.
TidyCat | 04.27.08 - 5:25 am | #

code decay is real!

there will always be fragile assumptions in the code. absolutely bullet proof code is impossible to write, and would run like frozen molasses anyway because of all the checking it would have to do. so there are fragile assumption

and then one fine day the world changes

.

GravatarOkay, who are the other two people?

GravatarI have a friend who was brought into a project with a major bank. They were running 8-bit code to do trades and deals. A large part of his job was providing fixes. Neither his company nor the bank were willing to invest in writing better software.

Gravatarbut if it's a goat rodeo, does it get 'rodeo-ier'? or 'goatier'?

well, it's a way of saying "we admit we're idiots and we have to re-write the whole thing"

but with style

.

Gravatarso there are fragile assumption

And most of the time you don't even realize everything is based on an assumption until what it is based on changes.

Gravatarbut if it's a goat rodeo, does it get 'rodeo-ier'? or 'goatier'?

We're gonna need a bigger goat.

Gravatarcode decay is real!

you need the newest source code control - now with flouride!

that was FTW

=^..^=

Gravatargoat rodeo

that's funny - i never heard that before

i have never started work at a new company without somebody telling me that the codebase if fucked up and needs to be rewritten from scratch. of course, some codebases are worse than others.

but management will almost never invest in it

autodesk did it successfully - netscape didn't

Who is number seven??

GravatarYou know, I was fine with name-brand toothpaste until all the major brands added a "tartar-control" chemical. Then, I began developing small painful sores at the corners of my lips, caused by what chemical I do not know. Using
"hippie" toothpaste without tartar control clears it right up.

Gravataryou are number 3

GravatarAh. Now, six..

GravatarI AM NOT A NUMBER!

Gravatar"hippie" toothpaste without tartar control clears it right up.

tom's of maine

TidyCat | 04.27.08 - 5:32 am | #

as long as they don't make me work according to the latest fashionable methodology

by the way - wouldn't ya know it! who would be awake at this hour but a bunch of engineers

"all real engineering happens after 5pm"

.

GravatarUsing
"hippie" toothpaste without tartar control clears it right up.
plantsman

"Tom's of Maine"!!

Gravatari am a free man!

(later seasons he was #3, yes?)

GravatarMe and TidyCat use the same toothpaste!

Gravatar"Desert Essence", actually; but Tom's does work fine, too.

Gravatar
by the way - wouldn't ya know it! who would be awake at this hour but a bunch of engineers

I finally built a windows box to play with. CSharp isn't as hideous as I expected it to be. The pointy clicky ui designer is nice candy, but I can't imagine it actually saves much time IRL.

GravatarThe Prisoner..Great show.

GravatarMe and TidyCat use the same toothpaste!
Duane V, Too Serious

i see a huge celebrity endorsement contract in our future!

GravatarThen I began wondering how many people are adversely affected by chemicals generally considered "safe and effective" for universal use. With the FDA in W's incompetent hands, I'm none too thrilled.

GravatarThen, I began developing small painful sores at the corners of my lips

arrgghh!

it was exactly stuff like that that caused the food and drug administration to be created back about a century ago. but the wingers think that 'market forces' would keep manufacturers from putting dangerous stuff out...

who gets to be number zero? real programmers count from zero, after all...

.

GravatarAtriots for Tom's of Maine!

I guess we're not DFH's, we're CFH's..

GravatarThe Prisoner..Great show.
Duane V, Too Serious

it's pretty timeless. i need to watch it again

GravatarAnd while Bayer pats themselves on the back for introducing Aspirin to the masses. it should be remembered they first synthesized, patented, and trade marked "Heroin."

Gravatarwho gets to be number zero? real programmers count from zero, after all...

Tacitus Voltaire

true - but i'd like dibs on null, if you don't mind. it fits my mood most of the time!

Gravatar"Desert Essence"

Dust and sand in a tube?

GravatarWith the FDA in W's incompetent hands, I'm none too thrilled.
plantsman

Nobody can be..All of our food/meds are potentially lethal!

MikeJ | 04.27.08 - 5:41 am | #

i've been doing c# for the last four months. i have to say it really IS java as microsoft would write it. but even so it's not too bad

the UI designer thing is good up to a point, but it writes lousy code. the old MFC designer is much better solely because the code it writes goes into the .rc file, which you rarely need to look at

.

GravatarAll of our food/meds are potentially lethal!
Duane V, Too Serious

mmmm ... melamine anyone?

Gravatarit should be remembered they first synthesized, patented, and trade marked "Heroin."
plantsman

Ah, the good old days..When you could wash down your heroin with some cocaine cola!

GravatarActually, mostly calcium carbonate (lime) and Melaleuca alternifolia (Tea Tree) oil.

Gravatari like the arm and hammer toothpaste with the baking soda in it

relatively organic compared to the candy toopaste put out by the big manufacturers

.

GravatarDust and sand in a tube?
Doug

That'd get the teeth clean!

GravatarAccording to wikipedia, "On April 17, 2008, ITV announced that a new Prisoner series will go into production during the summer and fall of 2008. Patrick McGoohan is expected to make a guest appearance and Ian McKellin will be featured in the series. American actor Jim Caviezel will play the part of Number Six."

add a little air pressure and you got sandblasting ...

GravatarArm & Hammer (Church & Dwight) is the corporate force behind Oxi-Clean , which means they employ Billy Mays, which disturbs me.

GravatarAmerican actor Jim Caviezel will play the part of Number Six."
MikeJ

I hope they do it justice..But color me skeptical..

TidyCat

Hey, some of us need that in the morning..

GravatarI hope they do it justice..But color me skeptical..

I won't get my hopes up. If it turns out ok I can be pleasantly surprised.

GravatarI like it when I can name everybody on a thread..

Gravatarsome modern remakes work out well. i liked the new sherlock holmes series in the 80s

.

GravatarHey, some of us need that in the morning..
Duane V, Too Serious

lol - i can just picture the commercials from waterpik for that ....

GravatarI like it when I can name everybody on a thread..
Duane V, Too Serious

that can't happen too often, can it?

GravatarBilly Mays

he should suffer legal action just for the sound that happens when he opens his mouth

.

GravatarI thought the Jeremy Brett Holmes was marvelous; with that creepy, obsessional edge such a person might actually have!

Gravatarlol - i can just picture the commercials from waterpik for that ....
TidyCat

It'd be just like the civil rights marches through the south, only without the dogs or rednecks..

Gravatar
he should suffer legal action just for the sound that happens when he opens his mouth

If we could just find the guy that invention compression we could lock him in a room with Billy Mays. It would be fitting for what he's done not just to TV, but to popular music.

Gravatarone of the people here is supposed to be the poor bastard working for the NSA who has been assigned to read our meanderings in case we start planning to blow shit up

Only very early in the morning.

not me - i work for a completely different gvernment agency!

GravatarThere are twice as many of us now. You other seven, come out with your hands up!

Hah! As if that'd ever happen. We're bloggers! What a thankless task that'd be..He'd have my sympathy..

he was great - there is one scene that i really love where his holmes character forces himself to smile because, clearly, he knows it is expected in that place by normal people

.

GravatarAxshully, the wee hours crew rarely get horribly worked-up about things. It's the morning folks with too much coffee who tend to get over-heated.

Gravatarnot me - i work for a completely different gvernment agency!
TidyCat

Yes. Homeland Security is COMPLETELY different..

GravatarThere are twice as many of us now. You other seven, come out with your hands up!

maybe one of them is MollyI with clean sheets?

GravatarWhen Brett shoots cocaine, I don't know how he got it so right (and I won't disclose how I know so), but it was scary good!

Gravatarmaybe one of them is MollyI with clean sheets?
TidyCat

Nah. Won't happen for another two hours..

GravatarDuane V, Too Serious - you can expect a visit from my ...co-workers ... shortly.

=^..^=

GravatarDepends. If Avedon in the UK drops by, early sheets are possible.

GravatarDuane V, Too Serious - you can expect a visit from my ...co-workers ... shortly

Lol...Oh, joy!

GravatarAnd have occurred.

GravatarDanke, Avedon.

Gravatarjeremy brett, acording to the wikipedia, died at the age of 61 in 1995. he worked a lot as an actor most of his life, doing a lot of shakespeare and suchlike:

Brett joked that, as an actor, he was rarely allowed into the 20th century and never into the present day.

his relationship with sherlock holmes seems to have been deeper than we knew!

Brett suffered from bipolar disorder (commonly known as manic depression), which worsened after the death of his second wife, Joan Wilson, on July 4, 1985. She died shortly after Brett finished filming Holmes’ "death" in The Final Problem. He took a break from filming the Holmes series. When he returned to film new episodes in 1986, however, grief and the stressful shooting schedule aggravated his disorder. "Holmes was threatening me. He became the dark side of the moon because he is moody and solitary and I am sociable and gregarious. It got dangerous for me." [4]

He suffered a full-blown manic depressive crisis and was hospitalized. During the last decade of his life, Brett was treated in hospital several times for his mental illness, and his health and appearance visibly deteriorated by the time he completed the later episodes of the Sherlock Holmes series. During his later years, he discussed the illness candidly, encouraging people to recognise its symptoms and seek help.

There were plans to film all the Holmes stories, but Brett died of heart failure at his London home before the project could be completed
