The Republicans will trot out Frank Ricci, the firefighter from New Haven, to testify against Sonia Sotomayor at hearings next week. And then we'll all get to hear once again about the poor guy who studied hard - hard! - to pass that promotions test, and then the MAN, in this case represented by a Latina following the established laws on the books which the Supreme Court had to change, knocked him down and took everything he had. He needed that promotion, see, and he was the best qualified, but they had to give it to a minority throw out the test because they could have been sued until the Supreme Court changed the law to essentially indemnify them.
The reality of the case doesn't matter, so this will just be a launching pad for a series of "white man's burden" colloquys among Villagers."
But Repigs never say that someone lost out to a place at Yale when Poppy pulled a few strings to get his cretin son into the place.

Relatedly, the REW podcast last week featured a panel discussion with cleantech venture capitalists, and one of the points they emphasized was the importance of government support for mid-stage companies, particularly in such a capital intensive sector. Loan guarantees and the Clean Energy Development Authority, included in Waxman-Markey, are the kinds of things that carry small companies employing maybe dozens of people across this "valley of death" to the point where they will be employing thousands of people.
At which point they start to pay millions to lobbyists and politicians so they can pay as little as possible in taxes...

All this politics stuff actually impacts the real world.
a thing i learned from the late great molly ivens.
• What stuns me most about contemporary politics is not even that the system has been so badly corrupted by money. It is that so few people get the connection between their lives and what the bozos do in Washington and our state capitols.
Politics is not a picture on a wall or a television sitcom that you can decide you don't much care for.

From this afternoon:
Local fundie preacher mouthed off about the President in the town's newspaper yesterday, so I figured I would send him an e-mail:
"Saw your comment in Bill Cleary’s column today. Bill is a nice guy but he seems to believe Republicans can do no wrong.
You claim that President Obama has “forgotten that this is a Christian nation.” There is nothing to “forget” – this is not a Xian nation. The Founding Fathers were deists. President Obama is aware that non-Christians and non-believers are no less Americans than Xian fundies.
I have no problem with people believing whatever they like. It’s when they try to force their beliefs on others that I have a problem with them and their beliefs. You wouldn’t care much for me. I am a pro-choice, liberal Democrat who doesn’t happen to believe that someone's being in possession of male genitalia makes me inferior to them. I’ve never liked someone telling me what I should or should not believe.
I don’t care for religious fanatics of ANY creed and I believe religion does not belong in politics. Women are NOT inferior to men and gay people should not be treated like “sinners.” I don’t believe blastocysts, fetuses and stem cells are more important than the lives and rights of women. Incidentally, if you fundies believe for one solitary second that King George The Twice Unelected is a Xian and that he cared about you, you are easily fooled. Bush and his cronies played you “believers” like cheap fiddles. Bush is a sociopath and a malignant narcissist who worships only money and power. President Barack Hussein Obama is more of a Xian than Bush, Cheney and that crowd will ever be.
Fundies would like to turn this country into a theocracy. They’ve been trying to do that since the second worst president in American history, Reagan, was elected in 1980. It hasn’t happened and it’s not going to. Abortion is still legal (thank heaven) and gay people have not been rounded up and put in concentration camps. Non-Xians and non-believers have rights too. President Obama knows that. I know that. And it’s time fundies realized that."

R McGeddon, no, not Denny's.
Although here's a short story about going to Denny's:
About 13 years ago Monsieur was working for an Irish firm. They had a beautiful home in the Palisades. We were greeted at the door and whisked immediately to a tent they'd set up in the backyard. It was December, it was freezing, and very windy, so at one point I went inside and stood in front of the fire to warm up.
The CEO's wife came in, saw me, and ordered me outside as if I was an undesirable species of reptile.
The dinner was catered, and every last thing was fish or crustaceans, served raw. No bar--wine on the tables only. (One red, one white). The food was from a very expensive restaurant and tasted like crap.
Then came the awards ceremony, where they'd printed out plaques on their ink jet printer.
As soon as the awards were over, Monsieur grabbed my hand and said, now let's get the fuck out of here and find a Denny's.
Which, at that time, tasted quite good and was at least filling.
Which brings up a question I've been wondering about...has any American boy ever been named Nigel or Alistair?

===============================
In case anyone wants to save that basebol video--I did, because I wanna see if the guy was really out, and yes, I know I shouldn't--here's what you do. (Works for music vids, too...)
Open your browser's cache folder in a window.
Order by creation, newest first.
Click the vid.
Refresh the window, and the vid's file will appear at the top, with a strange name. (Opera uses "OPR1A2BC34" with no extension).
Don't worry if you lose track of it, since new files are being added all the time; when it's loaded, it will stand out from the others because of it's size, usually several MB.
Right-click (yeah, yeah, PeeCee...)"Copy".
Past it wherever you want.
Rename it to "whatever.avi".
Bob's yer uncle...
Double-click to play
================================
I thought the guy was safe at first, till I took a frame-by-frame look. Too close to call for me, and the ump was a lot closer...

"Defense Department General Counsel Jeh Johnson moved the Obama administration into new territory from a civil liberties perspective. Asked by Sen. Mel Martinez (R-Fla.) the politically difficult but entirely fair question about whether terrorism detainees acquitted in courts could be released in the United States, Johnson said that “as a matter of legal authority,” the administration’s powers to detain someone under the law of war don’t expire for a detainee after he’s acquitted in court. “If you have authority under the law of war to detain someone” under the Supreme Court’s Hamdi ruling, “that is true irrespective of what happens on the prosecution side.”
Martinez looked surprised. “So the prosecution is moot?” he asked."

Remember during Bush's presidency when the media would publish headlines about Bill Clinton's brother saying "I don't know if Bush is a fascist"?
Jeb, IMHO, and go ahead and flame, is the smartest of those planning to run in 2012. He's biding his time, for now, letting Palin, Ensign, et al. flame out, acting rational. I know a lot of Republicans and "Independents" -- a lot -- who are only independent in the sense that they think that fundies shouldn't run the country, but who argue that Arnie really needs to break the unions in California and, presto, the California budget problems will be solved, who will vote for Jeb Bush in a fucking heartbeat. I mean, I know a lot of them. And they have more money to donate to his campaign that you and I can imagine.

Jeb Bush
do you think he can overcome his preternatural blandness, though?
Thank you, Hecate. I do really appreciate the encouragement. I just wish I was a better mom. Or something.
I can remember saying this to an older friend who was farther along in the single parenting thing than I.
She took my hands, looked me in the eye and said, "You do know that all good mothers sometimes feel that way."
It's rare for me to agree with SP, but I do. All good mothers think that we could do better. I think that it's clear that you do an amazing job w those girls. The really difficult part of single parenting is that there's no one else there to validate your decisions.
I remember one time when Son was in high school, star of the track team, and got a fever. His dr told me that if his fever wasn't normal by X date, Son shouldn't run in the big race. X date comes, I take Son's temp, it's too high, I tell him that he can't run in the big race. Son is hysterical, Son's coach is ready to kill me, Son's principal is on the phone threatening me. I thinks, well, either I give in and he gets an infection in his heart and dies, or I stand my ground, he lives and thrives, and this all works out Either way, my name is mud for a year or so.
I stood my ground. Last night, Son, DiL, G/Son, my Niece and her Serious Boyfriend (SB) had tapas and sangria.
I win!
But it was far from certain and far from easy all those years ago and I had no one to back me up the way that couples do.

The Ensign story is the biggest non-story of the year and both local news rags here in Las Vegas are running it into the ground. No one here in Nevada cares about this story. John Ensign has been great for our state. Left wing blogsites are trying to destroy his family, which is in the process of trying to heal. His parents had the graciousness and generosity to give them some money to help Sen Ensign's mistress heal and get back to a normal life. Lets move on, this story is going nowhere.

This might be interesting.
In the mean time, Mitt is out in the hustings campaigning for 2010 GOP candidates and building up a huge network of folks to whom he'll say "You owe me," when the time comes.

Authorities today sharply increased the
estimate of the number of bodies disinterred at Burr Oak Cemetery in
southwest suburban Alsip in a scheme to illegally resell grave sites. Twohundred to 300 bodies were dug up and dumped into an isolated, weedyarea of the cemetery, where many prominent African-Americans are buried, including Emmett Till. Former cemetery manager Carolyn Towns, 49, foreman Keith Nicks, 45, and dump-truck operator Terrence Nicks, 39, all of Chicago, and back-hoe operator Maurice Dailey, 59, of Robbins, were each charged with one count of dismembering a human body, a Class X felony. They all face up to 30 years in prison. Authorities are also investigating an Emmett Till Memorial Fund that Towns set up for a museum in the slain teen's memory. Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart and State's Atty. Anita Alvarez asked for the public's help in tracking donations to the fund, set up in 2005. "If there are any people out there who in fact contributed to that fund, in order to have that building, that museum, built, which was never done ...please call the sheriff's hotline number, and please pass that information on," Alvarez said. Bail for Towns, described as the scheme's mastermind, was set at $250,000, and for the other defendants at $200,000 by Cook County Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil. All four were booked into the Cook County Jail following the setting of their bail amounts, a spokesman for the sheriff's office said. "Carolyn Towns was the brains behind the operation, the one calling the shots," Blair said. The charges against Towns allege that "numerous graves were excavated and the human remains were then buried in a rear vacant lot in Burr Oak cemetery, Alsip ... She then sold the vacant grave sites for her own personal financial gain." Authorities said she earlier had been fired by the cemetery's owners because of theft allegations. The four were able to successfully carry out the scheme, prosecutors said, because bereaved relatives often came into the cemetery office to buy grave sites with cash. Towns would take the cash and destroy the deeds and other paperwork for the existing graves, they said. Towns would keep the cash and pay off the other defendants by increasing theirovertime pay, which she controlled as cemetery general manager.Mahoney described the defendants' actions as "cold, calculating and showed a total disregard for human souls." The scheme was discovered when a cemetery worker was practicing on a backhoe and dug up some of the remains and went to police. Detectives found a pile of bones decomposed, above ground and uncovered in an overgrown, fenced-off portion of the cemetery, according to Dart. In addition, bodies apparently were double-buried in existing plots, Dart said. Dozens of FBI agents are expected in Chicago early next week to help sift through the evidence at the cemetery, Dart said. "We're going to be here months," Dart said. "There are not going to be quick answers here." Tom Troutman, assistant special agent in charge of the FBI's Chicago field office, said investigators have "got to map the whole graveyard." Agents will use electronic equipment to search for anomalies that might indicate where there are more bodies than there should be, Troutman said At the Rev. Jesse Jackson's behest, a woman who said she has had 23 relatives buried at Burr Oak took the microphone briefly during the press conference at the cemetery. Myrtis Palm Dean said there will be legal help available at a Far South Side church on Sunday.

Dr Father Senator Coburn was speaking as a doctor, and a deacon, when he talked to Ensign about paying off his GF
But there's one point on which Hampton is particularly lucid. He clearly says that when Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) confronted Ensign over the affair in February 2008, the Oklahoma senator urged Ensign to pay "restitution" to the Hamptons, including helping them to pay the mortgage on their $1.2 million house and to move out of state. And Coburn isn't denying it.

What I really like about the Coburn defense of being Ensign's doctor is that Coburn is an Ob/Gyn, "personally delivered more than 4,000 babies" touts his web page. Since the doctor-patient privilege requires there to be a previous medical history, it may be that Ensign's story will get more interesting.
