I'MMA LET YOU FINISH

One of the greatest ideas I've heard yet. Regulate the traders but don't regulate the banks that got us into this mess.

Looks like I picked a good year to stop watching CNBC.

GravatarBut let's hope Chuck Schumer doesn't send any more letters..

Gravatarnetizenz writes "At a press conference yesterday, FCC Chairman Kevin Martin has clarified his earlier statements on Comcast. According to the CircleID post by Richard Bennett, he 'will not seek a fine against Comcast. Rather, he will simply impose some reporting requirements on them and order them to do what they've already started to do, phase out the current traffic management system in favor of an application-agnostic one. This is second story in a row where the AP have got the facts backwards. Hence, both sides may now officially claim victory.'"

GravatarThe last time we let these deregulatory maniac goobers in power we lost an entire sector of the financial system -- the Savings & Loan industry -- and the people help leading the charge to loot them were John McCain and Phil Gramm.

Since letting these foxes back in to guard the hen house (don't want to change foxes in the middle of a river, dontchaknow), now they have successfully looted yet another sector of our financial system they wildly pushed to deregulate and install anti-regulation regulator maniacs.

GravatarIndyMac is the vanguard, the precursor of more stuff coming

Goddammit, you fucking industry pricks! IndyMac is not the vanguard. Conseco was the vanguard. Perhaps you recall the third largest bankruptcy in history. The bank regulators didn't seize it, because it was an insurance company. Insurance regulators didn't seize it because its insurance business was healthy and would remain so as soon as the lending subsidiary was spun off. Conseco got in trouble because it paid billions for a subprime lender that inflated its stock price by flipping mortgage backed securities.

You hear them harping with the "looming problems in these entitlement programs."
I see the same bunch of thieving sociopaths scratching and sweating like junkies on the jones. The same bunch that has brought us a succession of these predictable stories about "blind thievery that had to be bailed out" lost their supply last summer, and now they're on the prowl for a new supplier. I knew something was up the other day when the assistant secretary for economic policy came out for his presser and did a dandy Don Knotts scared shitless impression. Dana Milbank asked him if it were time to put the money in the mattress and get a shotgun, and the sniveling little weasel had a hard time answering that until finally he was able sputter that the "economy is weak".

They knew this was coming. They know a lot worse is coming too. I'll bet all of these assholes have moved their money offshore, to Dubai.

GravatarStuffing mattresses supposes that American currency will be worth something. I figure megainflation (it's already at about 10 percent-- I'm talking in the 20, 30, 40 percent + range) will hit soon enough.

GravatarThe end stage of any rogue state's financial crisis involves foreign creditors deciding whether and when to dump the currency. It's a case of you snooze, you lose. For the first time, the offending country's long-suffering domestic proles need not get stuck with the depreciating currency. We too can sell dollars for real money. Nuff said.

Gravatar``It's not surprising to see IndyMac resolved. What you have to ask is what's coming next. It's going to be a wave of medium to bigger-than-medium institutions.''

I am really glad I already have my mortgage, because in another year or two, I suspect I would have been either unable to get the loan or the money I had saved wouldn't be worth anything anymore. We are headed for either a credit or a currency crisis.

GravatarOn second thought, I think what we're seeing is act Three of "Big Shitpile". Last Summer was the first act, the bear bailout and all the hanky panky around expanding the Fed's role in the spring was act two. I think it reaches the climax with a very dramatic collapse of a "bigger-than-medium" bank. The denouement happens the day China doesn't come to the treasury auction. Can't get a grip on a fitting act 5.

(You could barter an actual object.) Man leaves a wheelbarrow of cash unguarded for a second and comes back to find he's been robbed - someone stole the wheelbarrow - and dumped the cash for faster running.

It was a comment on the massive inflation that is coming from all of the bailouts and govmint takeovers. The value of the dollar will be next to nothing. Bernanke is cranking up inflation as we speak. First the Bear Stearns bail out and then Paulson putting his foot down in the morning and picking it back up again in the afternoon, promising Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac guvmint loans. There are consequences to all of these reassurances and bailouts. It seems we can't afford for these banks to fail, but it's also true that we can't afford for them not to, either. If they fail we are screwed and if we bail them out we are screwed. Nice work Bushies.

Gravataryour mainstream media:

McCain's week was sometimes refreshingly human. One mother of six talked to him by telephone during a town hall Thursday night over the sound of swishing water: The Centreville, Va., woman was washing dishes as she and the candidate commiserated about the high cost of sugar. Hundreds of women warmly received him Friday in Hudson, where he said women would benefit when he cut taxes and would suffer should Obama win in November.

His aides declared themselves pleased with the week, the first since the campaign's management was reorganized. Senior advisor Mark Salter played down the difficulties and said the strategy of placing McCain on the high wire of town halls and lengthy discourses "feels right."

"His greatest appeal is when people get a sense of how authentic he is, when he says, 'I work for you, I don't work for anybody else. I work for my country,' " Salter said.

Are they aware that the launch of a Shahab-3 missile is entirely fictional? That Iran still has not mastered the tech necessary to launch long-range missiles?

GravatarObama needs better surrogates. Been a dem problem forever.
A. Morphous

A near total lack of media smarts. Also too, these people speechify for a living, dammit, and the few who can do it at all well stand out like sore thumbs. Whyn't they study the communication arts in college, before they all head off to law school?

GravatarI'd vote for Thomas Sowell if he ran for the Presidency. Same goes for Corey Booker and probably even Colin Powell. Powell would have definitely won in '96 if his wife hadn't flaked out and forbidden him to run.

GravatarExcept that if we can't buy all that cheap shit from China anymore, they've got a wee little problem of their own. Their internal markets aren't developed enought to keep their expansion going yet.

GravatarCountrywide is no more.

GravatarReadying ourselves to depart WI on our way to my old haunts in NW OH!

I recommend the Underground Railroad Museum in Ashtabula.

GravatarWell, I've been trying to introduce "Toby Shitnozzle" into the mix, but people with brainstems don't understand what it means.

GravatarThat Iran still has not mastered the tech necessary to launch long-range missiles?
Snow (D-SC)

Can they reach the fifty permanent bases we have/plan-to-have in Iraq?

Gravatarsure we do.

it means that you are an asshole.

heh.

Why Dirkly, old man, I think you understate. Asshole is the nicest description of Tubboy that would apply.

GravatarWhat happened to Indy Mac is what happens when you allow Ferengi slime like Phil Gramm to futz with the rules.

GravatarTo build who up? People who had no business taking out mortagages they couldn't afford in the first place?

Fuck that nonsense. Let people who live beyond their means get on their knees until they learn some common sense.
Toby Petzold

First off, the lending agency makes a determination whether or not people can afford the mortgage.

Of course, situations change. People get laid off (especially in this Bush Boom! economy), get sick, have family emergencies (often medical, and we know how well that works if you're underinsured.)

More to the point, you could probably do with watching, even if you've seen it before, Capra's It's A Wonderful Life. Pay attention to what George Bailey (J. Stewart) tells Henry Potter (J. Barrymore) about waiting to afford a home.

GravatarThat's right! Sink or swim! Let 'em all go down the drain! Let 'em...

...oops, hold on...someone's breaking into my home, trying to get at my Cheeto stash...gotta get my gun...

AAAAAUUGH! They're armed, too!

With my...dying...breath...I curse...Jesus...

GravatarAs I mentioned this morning, my neighbors are all hepped up to bomb Iran. OMG, they have missiles, we're doomed! And these are not stupid people. They are, for the most part Dems, and they watch the news. And that is what they believe and no amount of arguing or fact checking is gonna change their minds. I despair.
qlª
--------------------------
Unfortunately Dems can be stupid too. Watching the "news", with their 30 second in depth bits of misinformation will make you stupid.

GravatarMeanie:

A near total lack of media smarts.

No, that's been this White House's problem. It's crippled them many a time.

GravatarAs I mentioned this morning, my neighbors are all hepped up to bomb Iran. OMG, they have missiles, we're doomed!

not stupid, just uninformed. it is depressing and there are days when i hear that kind of chest-thumping assholery that i really know this country is finished. that 44% support torture is the final nail.

Gravatarmy neighbors are all hepped up to bomb Iran. OMG, they have missiles, we're doomed! And these are not stupid people. They are, for the most part Dems, and they watch the news. And that is what they believe and no amount of arguing or fact checking is gonna change their minds.

not stupid? i may need to beg to differ. they may have their moments, but believing the sabre-rattling stupidity is pretty dumb

GravatarCan they reach the fifty permanent bases we have/plan-to-have in Iraq?

Oh hell yes. I said they haven't master long-range. They can do short-range easy.

Gravatarhave you read the vanity fair article about their demise. it's pretty interesting; and it looks like they were targeted by short-sellers. sec is investigating.

Haven't but will. Thanks.

The better half subscribes to VF. Great mag. I am a big fan of Graydon.

Gravatar...one of the local hate radio station's managers e-mailed me this morning. He wasn't all too happy about what I said.

"Don't say we're HATE radio without knowing the full details of the story. "

Now that I know the "full details," can you send me that "Hate Radio" sticker?

Gravatarmy neighbors are all hepped up to bomb Iran.

Did they all march down to the recruiting center?

Seriously, could you ask them that question for me?

GravatarAsshole is the nicest description of Tubboy that would apply.
billy b

I favor "rancid, dripping sack of maggot-infested dick cheese" myself.

GravatarSinfonian! You were in my dream last night! I finally got a cell phone (in the dream), and you were my first call! And since I don't actually ever use a cell phone, in the dream it operated like a cross between a fax & a computer: you sent me some text/manifesto and it was received electronically on a screen, but page by page with that fax sound...

and then i woke up.

(i think you were in there 'cause i saw a guy yesterday, in real life, in shorts and a short sleeve t-shirt with a vest over it. and for some reason i thought, 'sinfonian would wear that')

GravatarI recommend the Underground Railroad Museum in Ashtabula.

That's actually north of our route, since we're headed for central PA next--my birthplace.

GravatarI would also recommend staying in Lucille's Cottages in Geneva-on-the-Lake, but this is their busy season, they only rent out by the week.

Gravatarnot stupid, just uninformed.

Ummmm, no. They're stupid. Willfully so.

GravatarDon't tell anybody I said this, Derbes, but the consumer culture disturbs me deeply.

Waste not, want not.

I will never forget the shock of learning from my mortgage broker that I was suspect to The System because I didn't own (and still don't own) a credit card.

GravatarAre they aware that the launch of a Shahab-3 missile is entirely fictional? That Iran still has not mastered the tech necessary to launch long-range missiles?
Snow

Well I told em and the response was they don't have them *yet*, we must stop them before it is too late. About the best I could do was get one or two to agree that doing anything now, with this admin, would not be too wise. I'm just worried that the meme is out there now that Iran is the enemy and we have to do something.

Gravatars h e e t s

Gravatarmy neighbors are all hepped up to bomb Iran.

If the Iranian army were to invade southern Iraq now, it would be the most unspeakable sort of bloodbath for all involved. Bombing them now would be gobbing somebody in the eye when they have hold of your nutsack.

GravatarObama needs better surrogates. Been a dem problem forever.
A. Morphous

A near total lack of media smarts.

i wanted to pull my hair out last nite after catching a david shuster segment about obama's financial support showing signs of slowing and how that translates into less enthusiasm for his campaign.

the dem hack was someone i've never seen before and utterly out of his depth. instead of aggressively challenging that statement with the previous day's pew results about the highest level of enthusiasm evah and a level of engagement among dems not seen in decades, he wimpily says that well, it's expected that once the nominee is decided, things calm down. but it will pick up. so, he completely legitimizes the shuster framing.

and then republican hack then came on and chewed up her airtime about all the travails plaguing the obama campaign -- clintonsclintonsclintons.

it's so fucking frustrating.

GravatarThanks, ina.

Although I wouldn't wear a T-shirt with a vest. But thanks.

And thanks, too, billy b. Sometimes these morons need to be set straight.

HATE radio? Anyone who carries O'Reilly and Ingraham and Savage DEFINES hate radio.

(look out, spocko ... I'm next )

GravatarPoor and low-income people purchase things on credit and impulse because they do not think. All they know is that they want. It's a mental illness to waste money on shit you don't need and that actually hurts you.

GravatarIran has basically taken SCUD missile technology from North Korea and re-engineered it attempting to make it into a long-range, large warhead missile.

It is a SCUD missile, which is not long-range or large warhead.

It is North Korean technology, i.e. a copy of a Chinese copy of Russian technology. A copy of a copy is never quite as sharp as the original.

GravatarFirst off, the lending agency makes a determination whether or not people can afford the mortgage.
---------------------------
The problem is all of these institutions got greedy and began lending to people who had no chance of repaying and the lenders knew it. They were telling people they could borrow without disclosing income and or fudging on other pertinent facts. Why would these businesses do this? Because they would turn right around and sell these bad mortgages to other institutions and make out like the bandits they were. The other institutions would do the same, and of course you got the mortgage insureres into the mix, bundling and sectioning off pieces of the bundles to investors. So you have a situation where, because of greed and everyone wanting their share of the easy money, everyone is going down the shitter at the same time, because the loans are all going belly up.

It was predatory lending at its very worst. This is what deregulation has brought us. An economy based wholly on greed and avarice with no fetters or brakes to stop it.

Gravatarnona:

a david shuster segment about obama's financial support showing signs of slowing and how that translates into less enthusiasm for his campaign

But the metric is always that Obama's fundraising genius was a validation of his worth as a candidate. And now that it may be slowing ---what? Is the rationale just not as good anymore?

GravatarAs I mentioned this morning, my neighbors are all hepped up to bomb Iran. OMG, they have missiles, we're doomed!

Can they find Iran on a map?

GravatarThe leaders of Iran are not so psychotic that they don't realize that if by some miracle they succeded in lobbing a functional nuke at anybody, that would be the end of Iran in a matter of minutes.

GravatarCareful. I read where Lucas Davenport was in charge of keeping order there.
Gimlet

Give it up, it's hopeless...

Tubboy of the blanket statement.

Jesus Christ on a cracker, this pimp gets more fucking delusional with each post.

you're right. and it's the 'willfully' that's so unforgiveable.

It's Cheney's One Percent Doctrine still going strong.

[Not to be confused with the The Seven-Per-Cent Solution, although a cocaine bender* can have the same effect.]

*Enter George W. Bush: "Whuh..what? Did I miss sumthin'?!"

GravatarSinfonian lay the smack down on the bastages. Hear! Hear! *snap* Woop! Woop! Woop!

Nice answer.

GravatarI suppose if Iran were in real danger of being taken over by crazies, I'd be afraid of their missile technology too, but the truth of the matter is that they're in much more danger of being taken over by decent people. The current government is basically a turbanned mafia with Ahmedinejad as the mascot.

Gravatarbilly, why don't you drive through the "east side" of whatever town you're in and have a look at what goes on? Check-cashing places, pawn shops, liquor stores, and the ubiquitous convenience store where everything is abt a third higher than it ought to be. People are goddamned idiots. Maybe our economy depends on that, but it doesn't make it any less awful.

GravatarIf you're smart, you can eat a full and healthy meal on just abt what a pack of menthols costs as Abu's local shit-dispensery with the bars on the windows and the bullet-proof lazy susans turning after dark.

I know abt Potterville, goddammit.

GravatarThe leaders of Iran are not so psychotic that they don't realize that if by some miracle they succeded in lobbing a functional nuke at anybody, that would be the end of Iran in a matter of minutes.

That would be indeed miraculous. But they, like Iraq, find some defensive value in making people think they are more capable than they truly are.

That is classic military puffery strategy. Deception is a crucial part of military strategy. Only fools like Bush, McCain, Graham, and Lieberman don't understand that.

GravatarNon-white and poor people should kill themselves now.

GravatarFar be it from me to give anyone investment advice, but funds exist. They tend to have 'hard currency' in the name. One favors the Euro to avoid interventions, another is more diversified toward emerging markets... Also some total return funds will diversify by currency, when they need to. Best to start with the prospectuses and then see if the annual reports scare you. Foreign bond funds are available too, and are said to give equivalent returns with less volatility. But inflation can complicate matters with them.

Yesterday the wailing was all stocks stocks stocks but 'riskless' US Treasuries dropped too. The only place to hide is far away.

GravatarApparantly the thinking in Washington is that everything will be OK if they simply distract all of us from the economic meltdown by starting a nuclear war.

Mother.

Fuckers!

Bushie-boy just "amber lighted" the Iran war, which is virtually the same thing as green-lighting it. Have the best time you can for the next couple of months because that's pretty much what's left of your life and mine.
