One of the greatest ideas I've heard yet. Regulate the traders but don't regulate the banks that got us into this mess.

netizenz writes "At a press conference yesterday, FCC Chairman Kevin Martin has clarified his earlier statements on Comcast. According to the CircleID post by Richard Bennett, he 'will not seek a fine against Comcast. Rather, he will simply impose some reporting requirements on them and order them to do what they've already started to do, phase out the current traffic management system in favor of an application-agnostic one. This is second story in a row where the AP have got the facts backwards. Hence, both sides may now officially claim victory.'"
The last time we let these deregulatory maniac goobers in power we lost an entire sector of the financial system -- the Savings & Loan industry -- and the people help leading the charge to loot them were John McCain and Phil Gramm.
Since letting these foxes back in to guard the hen house (don't want to change foxes in the middle of a river, dontchaknow), now they have successfully looted yet another sector of our financial system they wildly pushed to deregulate and install anti-regulation regulator maniacs.

Goddammit, you fucking industry pricks! IndyMac is not the vanguard. Conseco was the vanguard. Perhaps you recall the third largest bankruptcy in history. The bank regulators didn't seize it, because it was an insurance company. Insurance regulators didn't seize it because its insurance business was healthy and would remain so as soon as the lending subsidiary was spun off. Conseco got in trouble because it paid billions for a subprime lender that inflated its stock price by flipping mortgage backed securities.

Just finished watching the Brad DeLong-Grover Norquist "discssion about the Fannie/Freddie issue on the Beeb.
The winged monkeys are out in forces (cf. Shlaes) pounding for SS privatization again. In true "Shock doctrine" fashion, they're taking advantage of the uncertainty and worry generated by this, the second act of what promises to be a five act tragedy best known as "Big Shitpile." You hear them harping with the "looming problems in these entitlement programs."
I see the same bunch of thieving sociopaths scratching and sweating like junkies on the jones. The same bunch that has brought us a succession of these predictable stories about "blind thievery that had to be bailed out" lost their supply last summer, and now they're on the prowl for a new supplier. Social Security and Medicare have been their ultimate target, so now they're locked in: this is their final solution, the final plunder.

On second thought, I think what we're seeing is act Three of "Big Shitpile". Last Summer was the first act, the bear bailout and all the hanky panky around expanding the Fed's role in the spring was act two. I think it reaches the climax with a very dramatic collapse of a "bigger-than-medium" bank. The denouement happens the day China doesn't come to the treasury auction. 10 TRILLION mark notes - worthless. Workers handing their pay in cash out the factory window to the wife so she could go buy something - anything- before the next depreciation. (You could barter an actual object.) Man leaves a wheelbarrow of cash unguarded for a second and comes back to find he's been robbed - someone stole the wheelbarrow - and dumped the cash for faster running.

It was a comment on the massive inflation that is coming from all of the bailouts and govmint takeovers. The value of the dollar will be next to nothing. Bernanke is cranking up inflation as we speak. First the Bear Stearns bail out and then Paulson putting his foot down in the morning and picking it back up again in the afternoon, promising Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac guvmint loans. There are consequences to all of these reassurances and bailouts. It seems we can't afford for these banks to fail, but it's also true that we can't afford for them not to, either. If they fail we are screwed and if we bail them out we are screwed. Nice work Bushies.

your mainstream media:
McCain's week was sometimes refreshingly human. One mother of six talked to him by telephone during a town hall Thursday night over the sound of swishing water: The Centreville, Va., woman was washing dishes as she and the candidate commiserated about the high cost of sugar. Hundreds of women warmly received him Friday in Hudson, where he said women would benefit when he cut taxes and would suffer should Obama win in November.
His aides declared themselves pleased with the week, the first since the campaign's management was reorganized. Senior advisor Mark Salter played down the difficulties and said the strategy of placing McCain on the high wire of town halls and lengthy discourses "feels right."
"His greatest appeal is when people get a sense of how authentic he is, when he says, 'I work for you, I don't work for anybody else. I work for my country,' " Salter said.

First off, the lending agency makes a determination whether or not people can afford the mortgage.
Of course, situations change. People get laid off (especially in this Bush Boom! economy), get sick, have family emergencies (often medical, and we know how well that works if you're underinsured.)
More to the point, you could probably do with watching, even if you've seen it before, Capra's It's A Wonderful Life. Pay attention to what George Bailey (J. Stewart) tells Henry Potter (J. Barrymore) about waiting to afford a home.

the dem hack was someone i've never seen before and utterly out of his depth. instead of aggressively challenging that statement with the previous day's pew results about the highest level of enthusiasm evah and a level of engagement among dems not seen in decades, he wimpily says that well, it's expected that once the nominee is decided, things calm down. but it will pick up. so, he completely legitimizes the shuster framing.

Iran has basically taken SCUD missile technology from North Korea and re-engineered it attempting to make it into a long-range, large warhead missile.
It is a SCUD missile, which is not long-range or large warhead.
It is North Korean technology, i.e. a copy of a Chinese copy of Russian technology. A copy of a copy is never quite as sharp as the original.

First off, the lending agency makes a determination whether or not people can afford the mortgage.
---------------------------
The problem is all of these institutions got greedy and began lending to people who had no chance of repaying and the lenders knew it. They were telling people they could borrow without disclosing income and or fudging on other pertinent facts. Why would these businesses do this? Because they would turn right around and sell these bad mortgages to other institutions and make out like the bandits they were. The other institutions would do the same, and of course you got the mortgage insureres into the mix, bundling and sectioning off pieces of the bundles to investors. So you have a situation where, because of greed and everyone wanting their share of the easy money, everyone is going down the shitter at the same time, because the loans are all going belly up.
It was predatory lending at its very worst. This is what deregulation has brought us. An economy based wholly on greed and avarice with no fetters or brakes to stop it.

That would be indeed miraculous. But they, like Iraq, find some defensive value in making people think they are more capable than they truly are.

Far be it from me to give anyone investment advice, but funds exist. They tend to have 'hard currency' in the name. One favors the Euro to avoid interventions, another is more diversified toward emerging markets... Also some total return funds will diversify by currency, when they need to. Best to start with the prospectuses and then see if the annual reports scare you. Foreign bond funds are available too, and are said to give equivalent returns with less volatility. But inflation can complicate matters with them.
Yesterday the wailing was all stocks stocks stocks but 'riskless' US Treasuries dropped too. The only place to hide is far away.
