As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 11,853 people, 4,787 households, and 3,245 families residing in the city. The population density was 348.8/km² (903.5/mi²). There were 5,561 housing units at an average density of 163.7/km² (423.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 91.98% White, 0.25% African American, 1.96% Native American, 0.67% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 3.26% from other races, and 1.86% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.06% of the population.

Gravatarfaux news interview this morning: "Obamageddon"

premise: the national debt is so high and the dow is so tanked and unemployment so rampant that if we don't stop obama now we'll never dig our way out. even the faux newsmuffin pointed out that jobless numbers were softening and the dow was heading up - the response was "but from it's high of 14k that's nothing; less bad is not good."

U.S. Job Report Suggests that Green Shoots are Mostly Yellow Weeds

The June employment report suggests that the alleged ‘green shoots’ are mostly yellow weeds that may eventually turn into brown manure.

GravatarThe cutbacks at the municipal and state levels of government will only fuel the direness of this situation.

Billions more in government wages are going to be lost through layoffs and furloughs.

GravatarI, unfortunately, agree: the problem that is QUITE different about this is that the jobs that are the bedrock of our economic system are being eliminated: teachers, custodial, public employees, hospital employees (at least here) police, fire and others.

IF you take these stable people out of the economic system: well, there's just not a lot left to fall back on, is there?

Governments - all governments - need to step up to the plate and raise the necessary revenue of we are going to be in a world of trouble.

We know many things right now. But one thing is for certain. With Palin free of her governorship she can travel the country for Republicans in 2010 likely being the hottest ticket in any town, not stopping with trips inside the U.S. She will draw gigantic Obama sized like crowds wherever she goes and will make huge headlines, even as she refuses national media, picking her conversations and outlets much more carefully than she did the first time around making sure that friendly journalists get the nod first.

GravatarFormer D.C. Mayor Barry charged with stalkingText July 05, 2009 WASHINGTON (AP) — Police say former Washington Mayor Marion Barry has been arrested and charged with stalking a woman.

The United States Park Police said Barry, a current D.C. Council member, was arrested Saturday in Washington after a woman flagged down an officer and complained that Barry was stalking her.

Barry was charged with misdemeanor stalking and released.

A message left seeking comment from a spokeswoman for Barry wasn't immediately returned early Sunday.

Barry served four terms as mayor. In his third, he was videotaped in 1990 in a hotel room smoking crack cocaine in an FBI sting. He served six months in prison and in 1994 regained the mayor's office

GravatarA state corrections officer is more than a little upset with Gov. Jennifer Granholm for closing prisons -- including the one where he works.

Paul Piche of Omer wants to recall Granholm. In petitions he filed last week with the Ingham County clerk, Piche charged that Granholm has closed 11 prisons, released 4,000 inmates, wants to release 6,000 more and "is directly responsible for all the new crimes committed."

Count me in: there was no reason for this other than political timidness and a willingness to fuck the rural parts of the state.

Gravatarandrew malcolm continues his concerted drooling over at the latimes. First, he does that neocon thing of comparing Palin speech to Richard Nixon in 1962 (but Nixon had actually been elected VP already twice and served in both the Senate and the House), then he offers this lame-mouthed attack on OB:

Will Lakers fans forgive Obama?

Chicagoan and basketballophile Obama appears to be writing off the California vote in 2012, at least the basketball fans around Los Angeles.

In a pre-holiday interview with the Associated Press, Obama was asked who was the better player -- six-time NBA champion Michael Jordan or four-time champion Kobe Bryant?

Without a moment's hesitation, the ex-senator from Illinois blurted out, "Oh, Michael!"

Then, apparently realizing what he'd said and the profound effect on any 2012 election, the new president hastened to add: "I mean, Kobe's terrific. Don't get me wrong. But I haven't seen anybody match up with Jordan yet."

Too late.

Uh, I dont know any Laker fans who argue that Kobe is better than Michael.
and I live amongst them.

Gravatarhttp://rawstory.com/08/news/2009...-goldman-sachs/
The new rule means the public will no longer be able to tell if large investment banks are manipulating the stock market for their own gain, says Matt Taibbi, the journalist whose Rolling Stone article on Goldman Sachs’ role in asset bubbles over the past century has rocked the financial world.

According to previous NYSE rules, any company that carried out program trading — essentially, large computer-automated trades worth more than $1 million — had to report the trades to the NYSE, which then made the information publicly available.

But, under new regulations (PDF) published last week, that requirement has been removed.

“The NYSE announced that it will no longer be releasing its weekly program trading data,” Taibbi wrote in a blog posting. “This is quiet obviously a move designed to make it even more impossible to track what’s going on in the NYSE and shield, in particular, Goldman Sachs.”

Taibbi argues that the move is designed to protect investment banks from bloggers who are exposing the companies’ stock market manipulations. Goldman Sachs is singled out because the investment bank’s share of principal NYSE trading has gone from 27 percent at the end of 2008 to fully 50 percent of trades in recent months.

GravatarJust a little observation from my small part of the stimulus universe...

Of the 10 billion dollars that went to the NIH for extra grant money to provide jobs, all of it was earmarked for scientists at top academic or private institutions who were already working in the field. Even the money supposedly for 'administrative' expenses was restricted to people with advanced scientific degrees (PhD secretaries?). It really provided no grass roots jobs at all and completely and specifically cut out support workers who provide research-related services. I work for a non-profit patient advocacy group and one of our main roles is to assist in patient recruitment for NIH-sponsored studies. We were surprised and stung to find out that we were not eligible to apply for any of the stimulus funding, even though the participation of our group was mandatory for investigators to get funded. I guess this is one example of a unfunded mandate, but to do that to non-profit community service organizations while denying them access to stimulus money was pretty rotten. Many non-profits are disappearing due to the economic crisis, taking good jobs and benefits down with them. I think they aimed the stimulus in the wrong direction. It almost has a 'trickle down' feeling to it.

GravatarSince unemployment is a lagging indicator (you would think anybody who took Economics at a decent U would know that), job losses are going to continue past the end of the official recession.

GravatarThe biggest thing that the Obama administration could to boost employment in the US would be to pass an updated transportation Bill with more investment in transit, but they want to wait 18 months.

GravatarThe problem is that we are drowning in debt. No one wants to take on more debt.

The solution is to spend money directly into the economy. Here's how it would work: The government creates as much money as it needs (because it can and it has the Consitutional authority to do so) and spends it directly into the economy. It doesn't route it through the "banks" or some other financial organ.

For example, if a project needs $10 billion dollars to, say, build a network of power plants, then the government creates $10 billion dollars to pay for it. It can do that because it's the government and that's where money comes from.

Then as the power plants (or whatever) are being built, the government pays the contractors and the suppliers (who in turn pay their workers, etc, etc). Then those people, in turn, deposit their money into a bank or other financial institution, which collects it, pays the depositors interest for their money, and lends it out to willing borrowers.

I really hope that Barak Obama wakes up to the reality facing him. One of the major problems is that this crisis started and was promoted on Wall Street. So selecting people from Wall Street--like Tim Geithner--isn't the way out of this catastrophe. Neither is picking people like Larry Summers, a protege of Robert Rubin, the ultimate Wall Street insider, going to help America. It'll make Wall Street proud, alright, but it will be death on the rest of the country.

No more debt, Mr. President. MONEY--that's what we need right now.
