GravatarI wish I could believe Atrios when he says OVERNIGHT. It's like Obama ordering orange juice.

GravatarI have a personal story that may help you folks understand how this Obama thing can hurt the average person. Many years ago Bill Bradley was giving a speech in the Senate and he used the phrase, 'Pell Grants for the poor.' At the time I was in school and a beneficiary of Pell Grants but I never thought of myself as poor or as Pell grants being exclusively for the poor. It was quite a sting and I'v never forgotten it nor forgiven Bradley.

So what Obama has said has real significance in small town America.

Gravatar...well, thank God for this! I was going crazy trying to find an appropriately crappy insertable YouTube video on my crappy dialup to insert in that last thread...

Smoking shattered computer carcasses all over the house...disturbing, really....

Gravatar...and, thank you for your concern, fred....

GravatarI saw a news report the other day about a couple with two young boys, both of whom were autistic. They were using a new therapy, of some sort which was the focus of the story, and it had greatly improved the older boy's condition. The younger being too young to benefit from it currently. It was amazing to this child, who did not appear to have signs of autism in the short footage shown of him.

GravatarFred's been milkin that goat all night.

GravatarAtrios, I was wondering if you'd read this? It's right in your back yard, maybe even within view of your deck:

A neutral observer, state Rep. Dwight Evans, whose district is in northwest Philadelphia, said there might be a racial subtext to the dispute. Ward leaders, he said, see Obama airing millions of dollars worth of television ads in the city -- money that benefits largely white station owners, feeding resentment. People wonder why Obama isn't sharing the largesse with the largely African American field workers trying to get him elected, Evans said.

GravatarPhila, do other developed countries have our rates of autism?
fourlegsgood, sychic intuitive

Yes. It is also epidemic in Europe, Japan and India. Autism and mercury poisoning have many shared traits.

Diet has done wonders for my son but he is not the same person that he was at 11 months. I am sorry to regale you all with my tale of woe but my son's situation is not unique. He was typically developing until he had his MMR at 12 months. I am kicking myself because I used to be an advocate for vaccines. Little did I know the unnecessary preservatives made of mercury to extend their shelf life might have been a factor in brain damage. The CDC refuses to investigagte the link because one of their missions is to make sure every child has every vaccine imagined.

That's interesting, and it's possibly that there's some connection. But it's also true that what you're describing happens spontaneously in autism, so it may just be a coincidence. Other possibilities are that new stimuli caused the kid to make some new connections, or that the nutritional program involved giving up on an earlier approach, which the kid was then effectively forced to use.

I'm no expert, though...I'm just going by the wife's experience.

GravatarGov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Friday that he would fight an initiative to amend the California Constitution to ban same-sex marriage if it qualifies for the November ballot.

Schwarzenegger has vetoed bills that would allow gay marriage but said he opposes the sort of amendments that are being proposed by two competing groups. Such amendments are already on the books in 26 states, but the governor said it would be a "waste of time" to pursue one in California.

"I will always be there to fight against that," Schwarzenegger said, prompting loud cheers and a standing ovation from about 200 people at the annual convention of the Log Cabin Republicans, the nation's largest gay Republican group.

The Austrian-born governor immediately cracked that he wished activists would instead focus on passing an amendment to allow naturalized citizens to run for president.

Both proposed initiatives would limit marriage to heterosexuals, and one measure would revoke the spousal rights and tax benefits currently extended to same-sex couples under state laws.

Schwarzenegger supports the current benefits for same-sex couples. In vetoing bills that would have legalized gay marriage, he has said he thinks the question should be up to voters or the courts, not lawmakers.

Geoffrey Kors, executive director of the gay rights group Equality California, said Schwarzenegger's opposition could help defeat a marriage ban or even prevent it from getting enough signatures to qualify for the ballot.

"We were thrilled. We have been asking him to do this," said Kors, whose group's volunteers have been working to persuade people not to sign petitions for the proposed initiative. "The governor's support to defeat it is critical."

I'm torn on this whole question. I like the free-for-all aspect of Eschaton's comments, esp. compared to dKos. But if I were in charge - God forbid - I'd probably take a more aggressive approach to deleting and/or banning certain types of trolls. GravatarI was just kidding, 'cause Erin and bo were trying to keep people from moving up here....

Portland seems really nice, but I don't think I could handle the weather.

Honestly, if I had my way, I'd probably be living in Vegas or Arizona. I don't have a problem with HOT - probably because I grew up in it (San Joaquin Valley)...

GravatarHee hee - I suspected as much. Portlanders knock their city all the time hoping to deter others from moving there - I see you're absorbing the culture quickly .

I did seriously consider Tucson or ABQ. But so far, everything's pretty great up here.

On that note, gonna go watch a movie. G'night, all.

GravatarAnd, now, for something completely different:

The real thing.

Gravatar...Portland is a WONDERFUL place, chock full of warm loving progressive people who are rightfully to be considered the true salt of the earth...

Bend and Central Orygun, however, are the ultimate example of Hell on Earth; no one in his or her right mind would ever even consider subjecting his or her own self to the emotional and physical degradation that living in this misbegotten corner of the world must necessarily entail...

[this message is NOT approved by the Central Oregon Chamber of Commerce...but the hell with them]

GravatarPortland's a great place overall. If I were to move back to the U.S., it would be to SE Portland. The combination of cultural and natural values, glorious summers, proximity of mountains, coast, and river, progressive politics, hard to beat anywhere.

GravatarEddie a billy goat? Maybe so but the man can sing!

GravatarJack K doesn't want anybody to know that Central Oregon has less rain than most parts of the country. High desert, 300+ days of sun a year.

I think you should be directing that question to Jeff Gannon or John Aravosis.

GravatarIsn't that the place that you have to pass through on I-95 when you're goin' to Freeport, man?

I live in Freeport. Work in Portland. So yeah.

GravatarDick Cheney needs to ask permission to take a fucking piss, for the rest of his hateful life.

GravatarDick Cheney snacks on the hearts of infants and washes them down with gold goblets filled with fresh human blood.

GravatarI think you should be directing that question to Jeff Gannon or John Aravosis.

Homophobe alert.

GravatarOn this Obama thig - I think he was right and excellent. But the anger he speaks of is really masking FEAR. These people he speaks of are frightened. Their jobs are gone, their local merchants have been driven out by Wal Mart. God, guns and hating those not like themselves are all they have left. But I don't think they are ready to hear that, so Obama was correct in framing what they[re feeling as anger.

GravatarHey did you hear Feith on Hannity today?
I taped it, do you want a copy so you can destroy his comments?
spocko

...Nope, I don't have the stamina to spend time on shows like Hannity's even if I weren't at work. I'd like to hear what he had to say, though, so if you have a copy I'd love to hear it....

Please, Spocko, email me at the address on my homepage. It's been a long day and I'm going to bed now, but I'll be back in the game tomorrow...

GravatarTemple Of The Dog 04.12.08 - 2:11 am |

I want to go on record that I strongly condemn your comment about Feith.

And I'm quite serious. I believe he is a war criminal, but we are (or were) a nation of laws and I would like him to be tried and convicted and then punished. Punished by imprisonment. I am also not in favor of the death penalty.

I'm bothering to point this out because I've railed against talk radio hosts saying this kind of thing on commercially supported broadcast radio for three years and if they come to me later and say, "You didn't condemn hanging when if was for people you hate." I can say. Actually I did condemn those comments. When I saw those kind of comments I DID speak out and I did condemn them.

Now I know this venue is different and I know that you are not on publicly licensed broadcast radio, so you can swear and say stuff like you did, but as much as I think that these people should be in jail and not teaching at a catholic university I do not condone the actions you suggested.

GravatarSorry Mr. French, I just cannot stand that arrogant asshole.

Someone commented at his blog the other day that for someone who whined about not receiving a rebate check because he makes $75,000.00 a year and about the high cost of living in DC, Aravosis sure goes on a lot of overseas vacations.

Aravosis responded back that he has worked hard to get multiple degrees and gets "others" to pay for his vacations due to his "unique expertise"...

The guy has multiple degrees and yet has to make a living running a blog and begging his readers for donations so he can upgrade his blog OR pay for his numerous vacations.

GravatarActually spocko I also agree that we are a nation of laws, and the above criminals should get their day in court just as long as when they are found guilty they are thrown in some dark cell for the rest of their lives.

GravatarNor do I. But he should be put in the dock to answer, and none of this "I don't prefer to appear" shit applies.
MP

Agreed, and actually that is why I'm pushing Athenae's book to radio producers and I'm sending the tape to Jack. These people have good questions to ask Feith and I want them to get to the producers of these radio shows. Now Hannity wouldn't listen, but he might just get on a centrist program that feels they can ask some tough questions.

I also think that there are steps we can take to make sure that he doesn't have a cushy job at a Catholic university.

Dude. This is actually a pet peeve of mine.

Dick Cheney and Karl Rove are not two people who deserve to have some supernatural/evil aura associated with their names.

Dick is like an overgrown kid playing Stratego or Risk . . . only it's real life, with our real national security.

Karl is like the kid who would punches people in the nuts to gain an advantage in a fight. Everyone attributes a genius-like persona to a guy who simply does things that others believe to be to far into the gutter.

GravatarIf Sarah Deere is out there.

I totally agree but the war mongers supporters always throw back that the rest of the world thought Saddam had WMD's.

Senator Dick Durbin was one of the 8 senators on the intelligence commitee who saw the original evidence given by the Bushites, evidence the rest of the senators didn't see and he said he knew it was bullshit but because of National security if he would of said anything he could have been thrown in prison.

GravatarNo Labcoat Larry when people do evil things like Cheney and Rove, they should be labeled as such. If you feel it gives them a sense of a super natural auro that is your problem.

As for Risk or Stratego, that would be George W. Bush who probably used to beat his little brother Jeb at those two board games as a kid and in his warped mind thinks this automatically makes him a war president.

GravatarThey rolled heavy, and they knew it.

Bet the fucking house.

And it came up snake eyes, and there wasn't a big ol' tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree parade like they thought, and it all went to shit and people started abandoning ship right and left, starting with General Tommy Franks, etc, fucking etc.

And this Members Only jacket wearing dipshit *still* will squiggle out of this and blame it on the Dem who takes over.

Good Grief.

GravatarPhil! Shut up!

GravatarI have a book called "the faith of George W. Bush" that tells the story of how he used to shoot his younger brother and sisters with his bb gun as they ran down the hallway.

1) What kind of parent allows that?
2) What kind of child does that?
3) Why wasn't this brought up in the campaign? Because after he was born again nothing bad he did before that counted. Great trick.

Gravatarhttp://allintense.blogspot.com/

GravatarOne thing is for certain. Al Qaida is praying to Allah that Insane McCain becomes our next president as this will assure that there record number of recruits will get valuable hands on training at our solders, their families, Iraqi citizens and US taxpayers expense.

No. I think I stand by what I say.

The entire Neo-Con movement [of which Dick is a member] smacks of overgrown boys playing Stratego, D n' D, or Risk with global issues. I especially remember the Black Coffee Briefings of the Defense Policy Board and Richard Perle who especially make me think like this.

The problem I see is that many of the dipshits who vote [particularly here in the South] automatically feel affinity for these limpdicks when liberals [like myself] rail against them for being "evil" which translates to them as "effective."

GravatarMessiah Hussein Obama: Kerry without bogus Vietnam heroics?

GravatarI just watched Ralph Nader on C-SPAN and as much as people may despise him he sure takes both parties to task.

He spoke the truth about the Bush administration lying us into war, how they have defiantely trampled on the constitution and obstructed justice.

He ripped on senators and congressman from both parties for not upholding their oaths of office, for enabling President Bush and then ripped on the Democrats for taking impeachment off of the table and for also tabling senator Feingold censure of Bush.

It would be nice to hear either Barack or Hillary speak out as boldly as Nader does.

GravatarLubyanka: Illiterate Fantasy Novelist?

GravatarLubyanko at least Kerry had the courage to fight for his country unlike the two pathetic cowards Bush and Cheney.

GravatarIt would be nice to hear either Barack or Hillary speak out as boldly as Nader does.

It would be nice if anything Nader said made any difference, but it doesn't.

GravatarMessiah Obama:

Insulted small-town America in a haughty, condescending way...

GravatarSee the republicans love Insane McCain because he wants our troops to stay in Iraq for 100 years. He likes to say how we've had troops stationed in South Korea, Japan and Germany for 50-60 years but he doesn't say that the troops over in those countries aren't being shot at or blown up each and every day like in Iraq.

GravatarObama gave his opinion on what motivates many rural voters. He didn't suck up to them like Lubyanka would have.

GravatarDis-arm McCain by referencing the costs of Dumbya's Great Blunder-War and how it prevents doing anything needful at home.

GravatarJohn "Insane" McCain, the man who once told Bill O'Lielly that our troops aren't trained to protect our own borders and yet they are trained to protect Iraq's border and South Korea's border.

Yep this is the idiot we want in the Whitehouse. Being a POW and 20,000 feet above a battle field does not make one a military or war expert.

GravatarMessiah Barack Hussein Obama:

In fey, twee, decadent San Francisco, making a comic mistake amid the Chardonnay-swilling, smug leftie twats...

GravatarIn fey, twee, decadent San Francisco,

THIS IS A LIE. Start with at least one true statement.

GravatarObama is the only candidate who gives hope to all of us have nots. He may not deliver on half of what he promises but even half is 100 times better then what the republicans could ever offer America, unless of course you are one of the elite 1%, a corporation, a CEO, a defense contractor or Al Qaida.

Gravatarplant:

Obama's fraudulence is out of the bag, asshole...

GravatarAnd our troll can't be bothered with even correctly placing the remarks he claims are so beautiful.

Pathetic.

GravatarLube: your stupidity and fabulism are out of the bag.

GravatarReichwing cowards love to drape themselves in the American flag and spout their phony patriotism.

They continue to support the dumbass in the Whitehouse even though he has destroyed our economy, weakened our military, made more enemies. The reichwingers are a lot like the people of Germany circa the 1930's.

GravatarBillary is in the process of driving Messiah Hussein Obama's small-town-values-hating comments up Messiah Hussein Obama's black/white ass....

GravatarAt one time George "Dumbya" Bush thought Iraq was a type of Chevy Camaro.

While John "Insane" McCain in his increasing lapses of reality thinks when someone mentions Al Qaida, they are talking about some Mexican rock band.

Don't punch a Republican. Just say, "No soup for you!" when you see them on the soup line.

GravatarThen punch them.

GravatarHillary has her own problems, and driving up Obama's negatives hasn't worked well for her thus far.

GravatarRepublicans claim they are against abortion and yet for six years they were the majority in both the house and senate, had a republican president and a right leaning supreme court so why didn't they pass a bill outlawing abortion if they are so against it. They had the numbers to do it.

GravatarWhy do republicans hate America, our soldiers, peace and our constitution?

Karl Rove told them to.

GravatarA Federal Law banning abortion would require a Constitutional Amendment, which would have to pass 38 State Legislatures. It wasn't ever a sure thing.

GravatarHi, V4VA, always fascinating that some life forms crawl around at night - and in the day sometimes - showing that they have only this spittle to offer. Sad.

American Psycho

What would they have to sloganize if they actually did something? which as plantsman points out, requires a constitutional amendment, in addition to being more intrusive than any law we have so far. I don't know that if it came to actually dictating what treatment a woman and her doctor had to choose, even the utmost wingiest of right wingers wouldn't be appalled.

GravatarOf course, some of them are on the editorial staff at WaPo.

Gravatar'morning, ql.

We're doing the garage sale thing again today.

Oh, joy.

GravatarOh, WaPo is at its ethical basement level today. an editorial promoting mandatory arbitration in contracts!

my comment:
"Mandatory arbitration substitutes for proper application of the Rule of Law. Inserting it into contracts is business's way of absolving itself when it violates consumer rights, or passes a defective product off onto a buyer. The laws should apply, and all contracts should provide the basis for enforcement. There is no virtue in cheating, and business should not be allowed to do it, on the basis that it saves time and money. This editorial is another disgrace to basic standards of decency, fairness, and the public good."

Prescott Bush: Guilty of doing business with Nazi Germany during WWII and also part of a plan to over throw FDR and put a fascist regime in charge of our government.

George HW. Bush: Bailed out of his bomber during WWII leaving his fellow crew to die. Part of the CIA rogue agents that assassinated JFK. Iran/Contra. Had a hand in CIA drug running. Involved with a child prostitution ring in the DC area.

George W. Bush: AWOL during his National Guard Duty. Known boozer and coke head. Screwed shareholders of Harken Oil out of millions of dollars. Used eminent domain to get a baseball stadium built. Allowed Enron to happen. Allowed or was in on 9/11.

Marvin Bush: Security firm was in charge of security at the WTC pre 9/11. Later was hired by Houston Insurance firm that had a policy with the owner of the WTC.

Jeb Bush: Involved in a huge healthcare scam where he made millions of dollars along with his foreign partner. Helped rig the 2000 presidential elections in Florida.

GravatarGarage sale is in my future. It is time to clear out the growing piles of 'great buys' in my storeroom(s). and simplify my life!

GravatarOh, WaPo is at its ethical basement level today. an editorial promoting mandatory arbitration in contracts!

Sure is working out great for all those women who were sexually assaulted by their KBR colleagues!

GravatarV4VA, the laws are just being trompled by these creeps. such a nuisance, having to respect others' rights.

GravatarIt's colder here in N.TX. than in Newh Yahrk City! 40F temps, really feels great. I can begin hoping for another year without AC??

GravatarThere really is an undercurrent of rage with people realizing that not only have they not done well under rethugs, but every opportunity to improve their lot seems to be in the process of being eliminated. They're watching their children lose ground even if they do have a college education.

Gravatarql, frankly, if it weren't for a collection of very advantageous circumstances, I would like Diane be working just to keep going. I have great sympathy for anyone who is struggling, sometimes it was touch and go for me even with my great degree - and mostly because I left a pretty good situation to come out here so my elderly psychotic mom wouldn't have to fend for herself. This country needs public service returned to gov't.

GravatarRead somewhere that Ari Fleischer's group America's Watch intended to be the Swift Boat Veterans of this election cycle instead is riven by internal turmoil. Couldn't have happened to a meaner group of folks.

GravatarCouldn't have happened to a meaner group of folks.
plantsman,

The worms turn.

GravatarWow, Ruth! It's currently warmer here in NW Oregon
(54℉ than it is in North TX. That almost never happens.

GravatarMr. ql had a full scholarship to college when he was 16. He dropped out and ran away to NYC. After a few false starts he wound up becoming a systems engineer earning six figures. He was instrumental in writing the first banking program for Citibank back in the seventies. The last few years he was working he started to lose ground. One place laid him off but kept the "guest worker" from Eastern Europe. This guy was forced to take a 20% cut in pay or face lay off as well. And of course if he were to be laid off he would have had to return to his home country, something he didn't want to do. It has only gotten worse.

GravatarIt has only gotten worse.
qlª bitch

"productivity" = doing lots more than one job for one often inadequate salary. Yes, my fellow commuters from TI were being subjected to the same stuff, when I was going back and forth to Dallas.

Gravatarplantsman, this is wonderful. But tonight's frost warnings remind me I will need to cover my tender garden sprouts.

Gravatarql -- it sure has gotten worse.

and you have a long, sad tale of woe in your inbox

GravatarV4VA I do hope that long sad tale isn't about a mistaken interpretation of something? Am hoping for you.

GravatarOne of my oldest friends (Canadian citizen) just spent a week in Cuba. She was lamenting the poverty and how hard people have to work: six days a week with a week of vacation (at the resort where she stayed).

I said, uh, Maureen, that's not particularly unusual in the US. People are working two and three jobs to keep their heads above water (and still sinking); a lot of them never get to take a vacation.

GravatarRuth sadly, yes. It'll be resolved the right way or there will be legal action.

Gravatarugh. V4VA, bear up, lots of things start badly but can be resolved.

Bill Moyers' last night left me really sad, showing little children sweeping up rice with their hands to try getting a meal. This is an indictment of the world powers, they have taken care of themselves at the expense of the world's impoverishment.

GravatarI liked the video
