I have a personal story that may help you folks understand how this Obama thing can hurt the average person. Many years ago Bill Bradley was giving a speech in the Senate and he used the phrase, 'Pell Grants for the poor.' At the time I was in school and a beneficiary of Pell Grants but I never thought of myself as poor or as Pell grants being exclusively for the poor. It was quite a sting and I'v never forgotten it nor forgiven Bradley.
So what Obama has said has real significance in small town America.

I saw a news report the other day about a couple with two young boys, both of whom were autistic. They were using a new therapy, of some sort which was the focus of the story, and it had greatly improved the older boy's condition. The younger being too young to benefit from it currently. It was amazing to this child, who did not appear to have signs of autism in the short footage shown of him.

Atrios, I was wondering if you'd read this? It's right in your back yard, maybe even within view of your deck:
A neutral observer, state Rep. Dwight Evans, whose district is in northwest Philadelphia, said there might be a racial subtext to the dispute. Ward leaders, he said, see Obama airing millions of dollars worth of television ads in the city -- money that benefits largely white station owners, feeding resentment. People wonder why Obama isn't sharing the largesse with the largely African American field workers trying to get him elected, Evans said.

My son has autism and his major deficit is speech. The school system still fights speech therapy for him because of funding issues and it is only through the insurance the company I work for that he got the speech therapy he needed (6 years too late for the optimal outcome you read about but I am thrilled at what the poor guy is able to do).

fourlegsgood, sychic intuitive
Yes. It is also epidemic in Europe, Japan and India. Autism and mercury poisoning have many shared traits.
Diet has done wonders for my son but he is not the same person that he was at 11 months. I am sorry to regale you all with my tale of woe but my son's situation is not unique. He was typically developing until he had his MMR at 12 months. I am kicking myself because I used to be an advocate for vaccines. Little did I know the unnecessary preservatives made of mercury to extend their shelf life might have been a factor in brain damage. The CDC refuses to investigagte the link because one of their missions is to make sure every child has every vaccine imagined.

That's interesting, and it's possibly that there's some connection. But it's also true that what you're describing happens spontaneously in autism, so it may just be a coincidence. Other possibilities are that new stimuli caused the kid to make some new connections, or that the nutritional program involved giving up on an earlier approach, which the kid was then effectively forced to use.
I'm no expert, though...I'm just going by the wife's experience.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Friday that he would fight an initiative to amend the California Constitution to ban same-sex marriage if it qualifies for the November ballot.
Schwarzenegger has vetoed bills that would allow gay marriage but said he opposes the sort of amendments that are being proposed by two competing groups. Such amendments are already on the books in 26 states, but the governor said it would be a "waste of time" to pursue one in California.
"I will always be there to fight against that," Schwarzenegger said, prompting loud cheers and a standing ovation from about 200 people at the annual convention of the Log Cabin Republicans, the nation's largest gay Republican group.
The Austrian-born governor immediately cracked that he wished activists would instead focus on passing an amendment to allow naturalized citizens to run for president.
Both proposed initiatives would limit marriage to heterosexuals, and one measure would revoke the spousal rights and tax benefits currently extended to same-sex couples under state laws.
Schwarzenegger supports the current benefits for same-sex couples. In vetoing bills that would have legalized gay marriage, he has said he thinks the question should be up to voters or the courts, not lawmakers.
Geoffrey Kors, executive director of the gay rights group Equality California, said Schwarzenegger's opposition could help defeat a marriage ban or even prevent it from getting enough signatures to qualify for the ballot.
"We were thrilled. We have been asking him to do this," said Kors, whose group's volunteers have been working to persuade people not to sign petitions for the proposed initiative. "The governor's support to defeat it is critical."

My suggestion about portland eschacon is two fold. Avoid labor day weekend - it sucks for travel and hotels. Make the event multi-day because it makes it easier for NoCal, LowCal, Denverites and Phoenicians to rationalize attendance. Also the cost of flying Duncan Hack out is amortized over more days.

Yeah, same here. My feeling is that when you get tempted to invade someone's privacy in that way, you turn off the computer and go outside for some fresh air until you've calmed down.
I used to spend more time interacting on blogs and at news sites than I do now, the past two weeks being an exception. Too much noise in my head.
At the same time, if you're a troll, you're frequently gonna run into people who don't take my view of things. So it's kinda hard to feel sorry for them when this stuff happens.
Yeah, I guess. I'm just really uncomfortable with the idea of using someone's anonymity against him or her, regardless of how annoying that person might seem. I guess I don't know the people involved, but I probably would feel bad even for a "troll."

Yeah. It's a gray area, at the very least.
I'm torn on this whole question. I like the free-for-all aspect of Eschaton's comments, esp. compared to dKos. But if I were in charge - God forbid - I'd probably take a more aggressive approach to deleting and/or banning certain types of trolls. I think we lost some really wonderful commenters because of these schmucks.

I want to go on record that I strongly condemn your comment about Feith.
And I'm quite serious. I believe he is a war criminal, but we are (or were) a nation of laws and I would like him to be tried and convicted and then punished. Punished by imprisonment. I am also not in favor of the death penalty.
I'm bothering to point this out because I've railed against talk radio hosts saying this kind of thing on commercially supported broadcast radio for three years and if they come to me later and say, "You didn't condemn hanging when if was for people you hate." I can say. Actually I did condemn those comments. When I saw those kind of comments I DID speak out and I did condemn them.
Now I know this venue is different and I know that you are not on publicly licensed broadcast radio, so you can swear and say stuff like you did, but as much as I think that these people should be in jail and not teaching at a catholic university I do not condone the actions you suggested.

No Labcoat Larry when people do evil things like Cheney and Rove, they should be labeled as such. If you feel it gives them a sense of a super natural auro that is your problem.
As for Risk or Stratego, that would be George W. Bush who probably used to beat his little brother Jeb at those two board games as a kid and in his warped mind thinks this automatically makes him a war president.

And it came up snake eyes, and there wasn't a big ol' tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree parade like they thought, and it all went to shit and people started abandoning ship right and left, starting with General Tommy Franks, etc, fucking etc.

I have a book called "the faith of George W. Bush" that tells the story of how he used to shoot his younger brother and sisters with his bb gun as they ran down the hallway.
1) What kind of parent allows that?
2) What kind of child does that?
3) Why wasn't this brought up in the campaign? Because after he was born again nothing bad he did before that counted. Great trick.

No. I think I stand by what I say.
The entire Neo-Con movement [of which Dick is a member] smacks of overgrown boys playing Stratego, D n' D, or Risk with global issues. I especially remember the Black Coffee Briefings of the Defense Policy Board and Richard Perle who especially make me think like this.
The problem I see is that many of the dipshits who vote [particularly here in the South] automatically feel affinity for these limpdicks when liberals [like myself] rail against them for being "evil" which translates to them as "effective."

He spoke the truth about the Bush administration lying us into war, how they have defiantely trampled on the constitution and obstructed justice.
He ripped on senators and congressman from both parties for not upholding their oaths of office, for enabling President Bush and then ripped on the Democrats for taking impeachment off of the table and for also tabling senator Feingold censure of Bush.

Oh, WaPo is at its ethical basement level today. an editorial promoting mandatory arbitration in contracts!
my comment:
"Mandatory arbitration substitutes for proper application of the Rule of Law. Inserting it into contracts is business's way of absolving itself when it violates consumer rights, or passes a defective product off onto a buyer. The laws should apply, and all contracts should provide the basis for enforcement. There is no virtue in cheating, and business should not be allowed to do it, on the basis that it saves time and money. This editorial is another disgrace to basic standards of decency, fairness, and the public good."
