Some people are wildly unrealistic. I have a friend who got fleeced online thinking that a Siberian super model 15 years his junior had chosen him of all people in the Western Hemisphere to fall in love with. This guy is not stupid, far from it. But when a complete stranger asked him for money so that she could get a visa to visit him in the USA, he was blinded by a picture. Men are more easily governed by their vices than their virtues.
Hopefully NTodd taught those junior high kids all about stuff like this at this internet safety course.

My father's family was Quebecois. They immigrated to Mass. My father's school day was half English, half French, but like many immigrant kids, he was ashamed of his heritage, and "unlearned" the french he spoke in his childhood home. Believe it or not, he now claims to be a southerner.

Or consider Amtrak, Montreal to NYC, NYC to Philly:
Simple. thems what's getting sex don't spend that much time online looking nor bitching. Them's what ain't it becomes their entire lives.
Rather like certain crusaders against something - say Teh Gaii or child molesting - that turn out to be Teh Gaii or Chester the Molester. It was the frustrated obsession that led to the full-time career in the first place.
Or better, the Xtian who wants everyone to have sex only rarely, in marriage, to the first person who ever put out for them, and it makes a child. Because that's what they got, and they don't want someone else having more fun than that.

Huh. We have to have a war if Iran has nuclear weapons. And, we have to have a war if Iran doesn't have nuclear weapons. AP:
JERUSALEM - Israel's public security minister warned Saturday that a U.S. intelligence report that said Iran is no longer developing nuclear arms could lead to a regional war that would threaten the Jewish state.
In his remarks Israel's harshest criticism yet of the U.S. report Avi Dichter said the assessment also cast doubt on American intelligence in general, including information about Palestinian security forces' crackdown on militant groups. The Palestinian action is required as part of a U.S.-backed renewal of peace talks with Israel this month.
Dichter cautioned that a refusal to recognize Iran's intentions to build weapons of mass destruction could lead to armed conflict in the Middle East.
He compared the possibility of such fighting to a surprise attack on Israel in 1973 by its Arab neighbors, which came to be known in Israel for the Yom Kippur Jewish holy day on which it began.
"The American misconception concerning Iran's nuclear weapons is liable to lead to a regional Yom Kippur where Israel will be among the countries that are threatened," Dichter said in a speech in a suburb south of Tel Aviv, according to his spokesman, Mati Gil. "Something went wrong in the American blueprint for analyzing the severity of the Iranian nuclear threat."

That's what it's going to take: all of us acting as if we were citizens in a participatory democracy instead of consumers.
Yes!
Right now it's a simplex--or maybe half-duplex at best--relationship. Like we're just watching TV and seeing the politics go by on the screen. Not surprising since we've grown complacent over two centuries of expansion. All those Orange and other rainbow revolutions happened recently in countries without a tradition/history of participatory democracy and they relish it--they'll become stagnant some day, too.
Which is why Jefferson said a little revolution now and then is a good thing. We just kinda forgot--victims of our own success, it seems.

"Something went wrong in the American blueprint for analyzing the severity of the Iranian nuclear threat."
Bush's steadfast stand against Democratic spending, coupled with his
equally resolute opposition to tax increases, could raise the federal
debt this fiscal year by nearly $240 billion. As Democrats struggle to meet his demands, they are jettisoning renewable-energy and conservation incentives that Bush championed, and they may ax some of his most cherished programs. Even some Republicans bristle at the president's inflexibility. Bush has pledged never to sign bills with tax increases, even tax increases that he once supported. "I see the president trying to play catch-up in two years for not vetoing anything in the first six years, and probably regretting that he treated the Republican Congress with softer gloves than he did a Democrat Congress," said Sen. Charles E. Grassley (Iowa), the conservative ranking Republican on the Senate Finance Committee. "He's kind of waking up to the necessity of having a certain policy that ought to be consistently followed, even if it's irrational."

Sorry, readers reacting to WP's idiotic coverage of presidential candidates (cont'd):
Is your political series "The Front-Runners" a satire of media political analysis? Are your gossip columnists writing it? You have devoted column inches to Mitt Romney's "anchorman" hairstyle ["Anchored Away," Dec. 10], and you said that John Edwards looks like "a man in costume" ["Working It," Dec. 11].
"How he looks"? "How he talks"? What about what the candidates say? What about what they've done?

"As he marched the nation to war, Bush presented himself as a Christian man of peace who saw war only as a last resort. But in a remarkable though little noted disclosure, Time magazine reported that in March 2002 a full year before the invasion Bush outlined his real thinking to three U.S. senators, Fuck Saddam, Bush said. Were taking him out.
Time actually didnt report the quote exactly that way. Apparently not to offend readers who admire Bushs moral clarity, Time printed the quote as F--- Saddam. Were taking him out.
A full year later, he was still saying "the decision hasn't been made... no one wants war..." etc etc
But he didn't lie. He unintentionally misled.

Ok, domestic crisis averted.
In Woodward's "Plan of Attack", Chimpy stuck his head into a room where National Security principals were discussing war planning just long enough to offer "Fuck Saddam" into the proceedings.
He's a fucking 14 year old.
Remember a couple of years back, the White House held a disaster drill, for the event of a major turrst attack or equivalent domestic emergency. All the WH people were working on it.......
Save for Dubbyah, who went bike riding with his usual Secret Service nannies.
Any European court can display equivalent histories of an inbred idiot manchild King kept for the symbolism and the bloodline, and not for any intrinsic worth. It is the very essence of aristocracy - merit by birth alone.
And aristocracy is what every fuckwad currently on top wants to institute - with themselves nd their own on the top permanently.

We finally put up the Christmas tree last night and we'll decorate it tonight. The cats are getting jaded about such things, both being the elderly gentlemen that they are; but I know once we get the lights on and the tree skirt on the floor it'll be as fascinating as ever.
The big kitty will lie on the back of the sofa and stare, stare, stare, and the little cat will curl up under the tree and be a present -- and then he'll surf the hardwood floors on the tree skirt. Every morning from now until Epiphany we'll find the tree skirt in a different place, skidded there by an elegant little old kitty fella who rediscovers rowdy kittenhood with a scrap of fabric under a fir tree.

OT: The standard case against any form of redistributionist or egalitarian politics is that Britain today is more or less a meritocracy. Never mind if youre old mans a dustman and he wears a dustmans hat; he probably made a killing after he bought that council flat of his, after all.
OK, so the public schoolies have still got a bit of a head start. But never mind, son. Concentrate on your studies, put the graft in, and one day you too will be on a middle management wedge with a Ford Focus to round off the compensation package.
In the meantime, chill out and tune in to the classless society, brought to you courtesy of capitalism rather than communism.
On a superficial level, it is true that there have seen major changes in the class structure of Britain in recent decades. The traditional ruling class is in decline. That is not down to the rise of the proletariat, but rather the increased power of the corporation and the state.
Many white-collar jobs have been objectively proletarianised, to use the sociological jargon. However, class consciousness and organisation has lagged far behind this development.
Working class communities previously often based around a single large employer have been atomised. Solidarity is even more out of fashion that flared trousers.
First I notice the ad that says, "Let's turn Hastert's seat blue" and then I see Miss November with the painted on blue jacket. How do I get that image out of my mind now?

Community colleges have lots of good technical programs -- not everyone needs a liberal arts or business degree.
My Ivy League BA in philosophy husband says he often wishes he'd become an electrician instead. Yes, the other is a fine social-class marker, but the supermarket doesn't care about social-class markers --it wants cash.
Nothing in theory. However, many students are poorly advised and end up with three years of community college credits they can't use at a university and no job training either.
besides community college can be a gateway to higher education but on its own it is not.
an aa is better than a high school diploma, I suppose, but it's not a 4 year degree.

Thatcherism, for all its enrichissez vous rhetoric, did not actually provide greater opportunities to ordinary people. Nor, shamefully, has ten years of New Labourism. And if social democratic government doesnt at least achieve that, what is its purpose?
No, you don't get it. The programs still exist, but states aren't applying for the federal money for them

My oldest son went to our Community college for a year and then to Michigan State. My youngest is doing two years (his girlfriend is there) at the local Community college. They have an agreement with the state colleges in the area to work together on curriculum so that the colleges accept the credits earned at the community college. When he transfers to Grand Valley State University next fall he will enter as a Junior in good standing. His total bill for two years of community college, including text books and tuition, will have been approximately $6000. If he had done this at Grand Valley, that amount of money would have covered less than one semester.
We need to find a way to educate people as efficiently as they are doing here.

I can't think of anything more direct than a via tax filings scholarship plan. Actually, it sounds like a pretty smart plan.
Community college would cost nothing for most students under a plan that Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama proposed today in Fort Dodge.
The plan calls for a $4,000 refundable tax credit, which Obama said would make community college completely free for most graduating high school students.
The plan, available to students for all four years of college, also calls for making it easier to apply for financial assistance by eliminating most forms and replacing them with a box on income tax forms.
Obama, during a news conference at Iowa Central Community College, noted that the plan would most directly help the nations nearly 12 million community college students, which he said is the backbone of our workforce.
As our changing economy demands a more skilled workforce, Americas community colleges must be at the forefront of our approach to higher education and economic competitiveness, Obama said.
The entire plan, which Obama has called his American Dream agenda, would cost an estimated $26 billion a year. That would be paid for largely from savings that come from requiring federal contract orders more than $25,000 be competitively bid, cuts to congressional earmarks and eliminations of subsidies to private student lenders, Obamas staff said.
Sour cream Jim. I am no heathen.

The consultation paper Managing Protest around Parliament stems from a Governance of Britain green paper in which the government committed to consulting on the sections of the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act covering demonstrations near Parliament.
This consultation takes another look at sections 132-138 of that act, and explores whether there is another way to address the situation that would both uphold the right to protest while also giving police the powers they need to keep the peace.

House prices are crumbling on both sides of the Atlantic, growing numbers of homeowners face repossession, financial markets are yo-yoing and the UK saw its first run on a bank in living memory. But for three audacious New York traders it all added up to a $4bn (2bn) profit opportunity and the biggest jackpot in the history of Wall Street.
The young guns at the investment bank Goldman Sachs none of them over 40 years old were unmasked yesterday, prompting a wave of adulation and envy among their colleagues, and another bout of handwringing about Wall Street's ability to make multibillion-dollar profits even as millions of ordinary people face losing their homes.
Dan Sparks and two underlings, Josh Birnbaum and Michael "Swenny" Swenson, placed what were in effect giant bets against the US mortgage market at the start of the year and watched their winnings tick higher and higher as the rising numbers of mortgage defaults spiralled into a worldwide financial crisis. Throughout the year, they battled with more cautious bosses who feared the bets were too big and too dangerous, but in part because of their success Goldman Sachs will post record profits next week. In doing so, the firm will stand alone on Wall Street, where rivals have suffered huge losses from the credit market meltdown.
Hell, if i were 18 again, i'd go to trade school and be a plumber. You

My 19 year old son decided that he didn't want to go to college and incur huge debts. He went and got a job as a union plumber. He works 12/7 nights and is finding that the work is much more interesting than he had anticipated. He's working on a power plant retrofit. He told me that his last paycheck pre-tax was $1400 (per week). I applaud his dedication and it was a good decision. He is frugal and runs on a budget someday he'll go to college, I think he has an interest in industrial health and safety. But this is good on the ground training and it sure a hell can't be outsourced.

The fast track to the best schools should always be open to the poor. When the poor start to show a pattern of 'effort', the system needs to give them the experience of the best schools. The people who control these institutions are completely full of themselves. They implicitly endorse an order of rank of intelligences. Why does the privately educated Yglesias need to spend 4 years at Harvard. All Universities should be Public and all access to the best teachers should be dynamic and constantly rotating.

More than 1,000 schools have seen a slump of more than 30 per cent in the number of pupils taking a modern foreign language at GCSE, according to figures given to The Independent.
Government statistics show that more than a third of secondary schools in England have experienced a drop of 30 per cent since ministers first put forward plans for making the subject voluntary for 14- to 16-year-olds four years ago.
The list of schools also shows there are 46 where no pupil studies a modern foreign language at GCSE. A second list shows there are just over 1,000 secondaries in England where fewer than one in four pupils sits a languages GCSE.
The majority of schools with the worst take-up of languages are in inner-city areas fuelling language experts' fears that the subject is becoming a middle-class preserve.
Of the 46 schools where no one learns a language, 32 are in urban authorities and the rest serve deprived areas of affluent shire counties. In Barnsley, 10 of 14 secondary schools have fewer than one in four pupils learning a language at 14.
Typical of the picture is Warren comprehensive in Barking and Dagenham, east London, where 59 per cent of pupils sat at least one of French, German or Spanish GCSE in 2004. This declined to 19 per cent in 2005, 16 per cent in 2006 and 14 per cent in 2007.

OT: The Virgin Mary comes from Knotty Ash, one of the angels used to be in Brookside, and Herod is a woman.
This version of the Christmas story, to be played out on the streets in the centre of Liverpool and broadcast live on BBC3 tomorrow night, has a cast of 300, including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, a technical crew of 150 and is produced by the BBC team responsible for last year's Manchester Passion.
It's a risky enterprise: Manchester United are playing Liverpool at Anfield that day, which could make for a lively post-match crowd looking on when Jesus is born in a real ale pub named after the first chief public health officer to be appointed in the UK.
Christmas weather in Liverpool can also be unkind so producers have not only given the angel Gabriel a decent part but beseeched him to arrange a meteorological miracle around St George's Hall and the Walker art gallery.
They have also taken the precaution of pre-recording the part of the story that unfolds on the Mersey ferry. But Mary and Joseph will still have to cross the river in real time.
If a force eight is blowing, Jesus's first glimpse of the world he has come to save could well be Birkenhead.
After discussions with the Bishop of Liverpool, the Rt Rev James Jones, the script's writer Mark Davies Markham has modernised the traditional story. Mary, lacking both the traditional blue robe and halo, wipes tables in a Seaforth cafe. Joseph is an asylum seeker commanded to go to Liverpool to renew his visa. Herod is a woman and the shepherds are both homeless and sheepless. But there will still be a star and three magi for the show.
Not everybody wants to be an astrophysicist or molecular biologist.
With my Brooklyn College BA degee I became a pizza maker in British Columbia.

hahha - A right-wing think-tank whose research came under fire on BBC2's Newsnight has threatened legal action against the current affairs programme.
When the Policy Exchange, which has close links with the Conservative Party, released a report entitled The Hijacking Of British Mosques in October the issue received widespread coverage.
But a Newsnight investigation claimed there were inconsistencies in the evidence used in the report. It called into question an allegation that a quarter of the 100 mosques visited by a research team for Policy Exchange were selling extremist literature.
Following the report, aired on Wednesday night, Policy Exchange issued a statement calling Newsnight's broadcast "libellous and perverse". It added it was "in legal consultations about action in this matter" .
Researchers hired by the Policy Exchange found that 25 mosques were selling material that fostered extremism. Receipts from book purchases made by the undercover researchers were then given to Newsnight to aid coverage of the story. But, upon examination of the receipts, Newsnight researchers became wary.
I've taught at 3 state universities and found that "excellence in undergraduate education" was something they didn't really care about - happened sometimes.
The universities i have interacted with are all bureaucracies. So, like government bureaucracies, they have Byzantine complexities and vast staffing of people who are just covering their asses and showing up to make it to the blessed day of fully vested retirement.
If their mission goal, someone getting educated, happens to happen along the way, thst's great! But very secondary to make no waves and make that pension.
Government bureaucracies are identical.

Effort is certainly important, but I still maintain with so many kids graduating high school with an eighth grade education, if that, effort alone won't do any good at all.
I was a returnee and started at the local CC, which was excellent, and then transferred to the four year state school, which again was excellent. I got a decent education. Not as good as the one my daughter got at Johns Hopkins and the UofEdinburgh, but decent.

Exactly. I want a level playing field for everyone.
Your prospects in life shouldn't depend on an accident of birth.
I'd like to see more funding for both state universities AND community colleges.
Everyone should have the opportunities. What they do with it is up to them.
I think you'd certainly prefer the Canadian system.
The only truly private "universities" are Bible colleges.
Some schools are better than others, but the tuition for all is roughly the same. Whether you get accepted into a McGill vs. a Laurentian depends on your grades. No legacy bullshit.
Even if you went to a smaller school like Laurentian, say to be closer to home, your grad school prospects are still decent if you were a good student. The Laurentian person could get a PhD at McGill.

Another gig that'll never go away is anything that serves the rich and their leisure. Get into turf management -- keeping grass green and velvety -- and you'll never go lacking. Groundskeepers for country clubs have the best gig going, because the board votes them whatever they want and they don't have to deal with the members.
Another one is boutique organic farming. If you can grow arugula in your little organic garden, the chef at said country club will buy all you can grow. And if there's a sentimental little story about your organic quarter-acre, up goes the price you can charge.
They were supposed to work over Christmas but the welders said "fuck that". So, they will be having a week off.
When you say "high pressure repairs" I am guessing that this is what they are doing. They have had to shut down the plant so that new sections of pipe can be welded in...it is apparently a very high temperature operation...the pipe having to be heated to over 400* in order to weld it. Son is learning how to grind and buff the finished welds. He's only been there since the end of October but they are teaching him a lot.

LONDON - The British army is losing the equivalent of nearly a battalion to illegal drug use every year, research released Friday said.
Research from the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), a defence think tank, showed the losses are greater than the total number of fatalities and serious injuries resulting from Britain's involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan.
An article in RUSI's journal showed an increase in positive test results for illegal substances, through the defence ministry's compulsory testing (CDT) programme, from 517 cases in 2003 to 769 last year -- almost a battalion's worth.
The research provides more bad news for the British armed forces, after the current head of the army, Sir Richard Dannatt, warned of morale problems and serious overstretch among troops in a high-level report, according to excerpts published by a newspaper last month.
Researchers were also alarmed by a four-fold increase in the rate of soldiers testing positive for cocaine use. Positive rates of cocaine abuse rose from 1.4 per 1,000 in 2003 to 5.7 in the first semester of 2007.
Author Professor Sheila Bird, a senior scientist with the Medical Research Council, warned the increase could be the tip of the iceberg.

Basically, Republicans have been in control of state government, across America, the past 25 years (This has been changing recently). In cutting taxes, the most shameful consequence has been the deep cutbacks in funding for their public universities, with the result being the demise of higher education in the US.
Student tuition is much higher. Faculty are stressed over the increasing teaching load & other administrative requirements. Colleges are, more & more, relying on part time rather than regular faculty. Tenure is becoming extremely difficult to get. The results are fewer blue collar types are able to afford higher education & fewer people are willing to go through the ardors of a Ph.D. for the current academic life.

Authorities and trusts are the different types of organisations that run the NHS at a local level. The whole of England is split into 10 strategic health authorities (SHAs). These organisations were set up in 2002 to develop plans for improving health services in their local area and to make sure their local NHS organisations were performing well.
Within each SHA, the NHS is split into various types of trusts that take responsibility for running the different NHS services in your local area.

Primary care is the care provided by people you normally see when you first have a health problem. It might be a visit to a doctor or a dentist, an optician for an eye test, or just a trip to a pharmacist to buy cough mixture. NHS walk-in centres and the NHS Direct phone line service are also part of primary care. All of these services are managed for you by your local primary care trust (PCT).
Your PCT will work with local authorities and other agencies that provide health and social care locally to make sure that your local community's needs are being met.
PCTs are now at the centre of the NHS and control 80% of the NHS budget. As they are local organisations, they are best positioned to understand the needs of their community, so they can make sure that the organisations providing health and social care services are working effectively.
For example, your PCT must make sure there are enough services for people within their area and that these services are accessible. It must also make sure that all other health services are provided, including hospitals, dentists, opticians, mental health services, NHS walk-in centres, NHS Direct, patient transport (including accident and emergency), population screening, and pharmacies. They are also responsible for getting health and social care systems working together for the benefit of patients.

Another huge problem in the sciences and engineering is that the funding agencies for research have been faced with budget cutbacks. It is a lot harder to support a graduate student financially these days.

The deal is, you make hybrids for new color combinations (omg! dark green with a white stripe and a ruffled edge!), give your new seedling a name, take cuttings, get the word out that this, THIS, is the next Sagae or Guacamole, and sell every little plantlet you've got for $30 each. There are a couple of hosta growers who've got the promotion part down to a science -- they name all their new hybrids like show dogs -- Lakeside Lassie Creme Brulee and such -- and sell them for $$. Perceived scarcity sends the price up too.

Thousands of Belgians have taken to the streets of Brussels to protest against their politicians six-month failure to form a government.
The demonstration on Saturday, called by Belgium's three main trade unions, drew attention to the economic effects of the political crisis.
"People are fed up with the discussions between the political parties. This is a very serious warning to the parties to take care of the people," Bernard Noel, one of the union leaders said.
Police put the number of demonstrators at 18,000, while organisers estimated 25,000 people had turned up.
Belgium's political parties have always been divided linguistically between the country's Flemish north and the French-speaking southern region of Wallonia.
Attempts to form a new coalition government since elections six months ago have repeatedly failed.

Iraqi oil output has risen to its highest level in more than three and a half years, the International Energy Agency (IEA) has revealed.
Production levels rose to 2.32 million barrels a day in November, the highest since the 2003 US-led invasion, the Paris based agency said, citing improved security as the reason for the new levels.
Iraq's oil industry has suffered since the 2003 invasion and ensuing fighting, which has targeted oil refining facilities and pipelines, and political infighting.
Iraq has also repaid a $471m loan with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) ahead of schedule.
The Taliban claims to have carried out a co-ordinated rocket and bomb attack in Kabul, saying it is using a new tactic to strike at the heart of the Afghan capital.
The authorities said at least five civilians were killed, and several others wounded, in the attack near the governor's compound in the centre of Kabul on Saturday morning.
The compound houses the governor's office, courts and police offices.
Najib Nekzad, an interior ministry press officer, said the deaths occurred when a rocket was fired towards the police station but instead landed in a crowd of civilians.
Moments later, a car loaded with five 107mm rockets detonated near the compound.
General Zahir Azimi, a defence ministry spokesman, said two of the rockets exploded, at about 8:20am (03:50 GMT), but the other three did not.
Owen Fay, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Kabul, said: "The Taliban claim that this latest attack is effectively an experiment.
"What they are trying to find out is if they do have the means, the wherewithal to co-ordinate an attack that includes both explosives on the ground and shoulder-fired missiles shot from the hills surrounding Kabul."
Part of the problems with the lack of trades people in this country has been with the Rethug defunding of Perkins Grant $$ for C.A.T.E programs. Boy, growing hostas & selling at the farmers' market would be *easy.* Say they're organically grown (hostas don't need fertilizer or bug spray) and jack up the price another few bucks.
You say the guy made $25k in a weekend? That's a lot o'hostas.
He's a wingnut, I've decided. Same MO: whatever you do or say is wrong. With the wingnuts, you have three choices:
1. Be selfish, don't give a damn about anyone besides yourself, like they do, and you're A-OK.
2. If you care about the world or other people, anything at all you do to make compromise (Al Gore has a house!) makes you a hypocrite.
3. If, on the other hand, you actually do live true to your beliefs (be a vegetarian, don't drive a car, whatever), you're a dirty fucking hippy, and therefor can be ignored or ridiculed.
Fucking idiot tweaks that last one a tad-- you may *think* you're living true to your beliefs, but you're stupid/ill informed or otherwise not as wise as him, so you're a loser. But basically, same MO. It could be a machine, really.

Saw the post below re. conservatives negative on Huckabee. He presents a real problem for the Republican Party with his populist economics. The Republican Party has 2 pillars: the religious right & Wall Street & their well to do supporters.
Huckabee splits them. If a Huckabee presidency didn't mean the end of abortion rights, I wouldn't be so down on him. It would be interesting to see the religious right - Wall Street wars, with it signaling the end of the Republican Party as a formidable force.

the trick is to know your market. here in flyover land, gardening isn't so sophisticated yet. most properties lack the finish you would see more commonly in yurp or on the elitist coasts. so one could make a lot of money selling "exotic" plants that aren't commonly seen. or take the pedestrian route, and just give the cretins what they want (more hostas). either way it's easy money.

Iraqi oil output has risen to its highest level in more than three and a half years, the International Energy Agency (IEA) has revealed.
Production levels rose to 2.32 million barrels a day in November, the highest since the 2003 US-led invasion, the Paris based agency said, citing improved security as the reason for the new levels
Funny. i could swear that Iraq's oil has been sold without being metered for the last several years. That is "nobody' knows how much Iraqu oil was sold because 'nobody' was measuring the production.
So, if they went from pretending that the meter didn't work, official production zero, to admitting the measured production, wouldn't that just give you a hell of a jump in production? Gawrsh, they are so stable! We're winning!

That's interesting, Moe. I recall having a discussion with you about aviation's impact on the climate, and when I challenged some of your assumptions, you absolutely blew your lid - a mixture of abusive insults and many, many words about what an informed genius and ethically wonderful human being you are. Why don't you make a modicum of effort to assume that I am informed and just as concerned about things like the global environment as you are. Then perhaps it would be possible to have a discussion that may prove fruitful.

Yea, but out of all of them, Huckabee would destroy the Republican Party
This I don't get. A deranged monkey couldn't do it, so why would a con man?
Bjorn,a poor young country boi
The Repub Party can function with a deranged monkey. Hell, they've been doing it since Reagen. But their party infrastructure consists of 2 central elements: the religious right & the Wall Street crowd. They need both to be viable. The Wall Street crowd provides the money; the religious right constitutes the base.
Huckabee's candidacy is an attack on the Wall Street crowd. A large part of his spiel is the old testament prophets' attack on the money changers. If he gets in, there will be a war between the Wall Street crowd & the religious right within the Republican Party.
Otherwise they just talk about alcohol, sex, and cookies.

Oh, shit!
A Romanian man had his bid to renew his identity papers rejected because official records said he had died more than eight years ago. Gheorghe Stirbu, 61, a retiree, went to authorities last week to have his identity card reissued because the old one had expired.
But the clerk said he couldn't issue new papers because the office had a death certificate showing that Stirbu himself had expired on March 3, 1999, from breathing difficulties, and been buried the same month.
"When I saw it I couldn't believe it," Stirbu said Thursday. "How can someone who is fully alive be declared dead?"
Stirbu said he was not ill at the time, nor does the death certificate appear to be a case of mistaken identity.
Stirbu's daughter Iuliana Mocanu said the shock of hearing that he was officially dead could have killed him.
"At first I laughed because I though it was a joke and then I realized how serious it was," she said. "He could have had a heart attack. He didn't sleep for days when he found out the news."
Stirbu has prepared papers to prove he is still alive.
"We have had mistakes in the past," said Vasile Tarciatu, the head of bureau that issues identity papers. "But not something so serious showing someone had died."
