In a well-balanced society these people could be honored for the contributions that they COULD make: a good machine operator is a joy to watch. If you have ever taken nail and hammer and saw in hand and then watched a "real" carpenter in action, you know what I mean.
Still, we keep trying to force people into the square holes we have designed for them and then wonder that they do not fit.
I didn't go to college. Hated school. I have a few college credits now. (Just finished a French 101 class that I attended with my 21 yr old son and 23 yr old daughter.) I think that the breadth of a liberal arts education should somehow be part of everyone's elementary education.

FDA restrictions on how the drug is sold without a prescription are contributing to the problem, experts said. The agency requires Plan B to be stored behind the pharmacy counter rather than on store shelves, and buyers must be at least 18 years old and must prove it with government identification.
These restrictions permit pharmacy employees to block access to the drug, whether mistakenly or because of their personal objections. As a result, some noncitizens are being asked to produce government photo IDs, when photos aren't required, and some men are told that only women can buy the drug.
the arts is being pushed out in favour of 'numeracy' and 'literary' hours.

Tena - no, I don't have a duty to report it. We were called out to look at it because her tenants are raising holy hell. At the point we went and looked at it, she would escape penalty anyway because she is in the process of finding someone to fix it. There's nothing in the law that would require her to go with the first or only contractor to look at the problem.
Tenants here have almost zero rights, so probably what would happen would be that after this went on for awhile, the health dept would condemn the building for habitation. They wouldn't be doing it on behalf of the tenants, though.

[...]
Perdue said he did not. In fact, in Spiro Agnew-like fashion, the governor encouraged nattering nabobs of negatism to put a lid on the loose talk.
Perdue acknowledged that the going in Iraq has been tough. But, he said, "until you've got a better idea, keep your mouth shut." "This president did not choose war. He chose to protect the United States of America, and I'm thankful that he did," Perdue said.

The patrol of seven Americans and their Iraqi interpreter were attacked near the town of Mahmudiya, spokesman Maj Gen William Caldwell said.
He said that within an hour other troops were at the scene of the attack, hunting for the missing soldiers.
Checkpoints have been set up to prevent the soldiers being moved from the area.

But don't individuals comprise the public?
True story.
A couple live at the bottom of a hill. The main sewer in the street backs up into said couples home and pretty much destroys the house. City comes out, unstops the sewer and locates a brick in the sewer but does not fix the problem. Couple calls insurance to help pay for damages. Insurance company says not their responsibility, couple goes to city and gets same reply.
The state has a regulatory body that oversees these kinds of spills and ensures that the city clean them up, but apparently not in a private home.

“It’ll have a two-day run,” Rice Professor Bob Stein said. Stein didn’t think quoting a racist confederate general, even if he was a KKK leader, would kick up much dust.
A nice phrase, but one that appeared in one Web site after another along with whole paragraphs of copy — a quick indication that while they view their sites as the moon and stars over Washington they are mostly products of cut and paste.
“I’ve almost quit reading blogs,” Stein said. […]
Politically, quoting a Ku Klux Klan leader opens the door for trouble. But stein has known Rep. Poe for years. “He’s no more a racist than any white male,” Stein said.
May 10, 2007 -- The Wayne Madsen Report has received a third well-placed confirmation that Vice President Dick Cheney, while CEO of Halliburton, was a client of the escort service of DC Madam, Deborah Jeane Palfrey. In addition, one of Cheney's closest military advisers and friends was also a client of the DC Madam's Pamela Martin & Associates escort service. Cheney used the escort service while he was a part time resident of the posh Ballantrae section of McLean, Virginia.
After intense pressure from the White House and Disney executives, ABC News killed the DC Madam client story after having been given exclusive access to Palfrey's ten years' of phone call records.
Cheney made an unscheduled visit to Iraq during his tour of the Middle East.

Our first two draft picks got injured the day he was here.
Well, I technically wear a dress myself -- as a straight monk & Episcopal priest (there are a few of us), I think it's fair to say that there are a good few gay men in the RC priesthood, but many (most?) of them try to be faithful to their celibate commitment -- after all, if they are honest with themselves about their sexual orientation (not a given) then the celibate priesthood is not only an acceptable way of living with their orientation, but is a good thing approved by the church (a body from which they likely crave approval)
Just my two cents

I totally agree and it may in fact take time to root them all out. I'm not trying to make light of it. I just feel, having worked for the state and the county and seen how it goes, that a new government will in fact replace a lot of those people. I guess my position is that over the past few years we have heard a continual drip of stories about young talentless hacks suddenly having hiring and firing and editing power over people who've been doing their jobs since before the hacks were in short pants. All over the federal system, not only Justice. And I don't have to use much tinfoil to suspect Cheney had a direct pipeline to many of them and plans for them to be there long after he's gone.
Maybe I'm being overly-pessimistic, but I see a major uproar in the liberal media the moment the first Bushie is canned by the next Dem administration. There will be much gnashing of teeth and rending of garments and the Dems won't want to appear to be unfair and will back off. I would very much like to be wrong.

The 24 acts taking part in this year's Eurovision Song Contest have completed their performances in Helsinki, with voting by viewers now under way.
Ukrainian drag queen Verka Serdyuchka has been the bookies' favourite so far.
The estimated 100 million TV viewers saw a wide mix of music - folk from Ireland, rock from Finland and Sweden, and old-fashioned pop by UK act Scooch.
The Finnish capital has embraced the competition, with thousands of fans watching on big screens in the city.
More than 350 supporting events were planned as part of the Eurovision "fever".
but I see a major uproar in the liberal media the moment the first Bushie is canned by the next Dem administration.
who cares, really?
By now, what real credibility does the MSM have? Didn't last year show us that there really is very little credibility left there?
They touted WMDs to the rafters and everyone in the world except the Bush cultists knows that was a bunch of bullshit. I think the Repugs are taking the MSM down with them.

The Eurovision contest always gets weird whn the voting starts. Germany votes for Turkey (at least all the Turks in Germany are voting for Turkey), Croatia votes for Serbia (forgetting all about that war),all the Scandinavian countries vote for each other.

Laterz. Don't hate on me too much cause I'm not as worried as you think I should be.
I am worried about now - the war, Cheney, Iran. I am so not worried about after we elect a new Democratic president - I"ll worry then. OK?

Okay, Mr. Boss man attorney. You need the trial file so you can respond to an appeal. Well that file has been archived. I'll work on getting it for you right away.
Sorry Mr. Bossman, the file can't seem to be located, but I'm working on it. I know the response is due in two weeks.
Sorry, Mr. Bossman, we found the file but not the record. I know the response is due in three days and the judge has said no more extensions. I'm on the case.
Phew, here ya go Mr. Bossman. Here's the transcript. I know the response was due yesterday, but really, I did the best I could.

I just can't see a Dem sitting there telling the country to go fuck themselves we''ll do what we want like Chimpy and Cheney and Abu and their band of sociopaths do at every opportunity. These little party shitheads like Benji Domenich and Monica Badling have a public hissy when it is simply revealed they are incompetent. Imagine dozens of them being fired by the political opposition. Faux Noise will be beating the drum for impeachment roughly 5 minutes after the inaugural and Tweety and Timmeh will wonder aloud how long before the failed [] administation is stalled in gridlock.

Gordon Brown will try to restore public trust in British politics by proposing an all-party convention that could pave the way for a written constitution.
In an attempt to draw a line under damaging perceptions over sleaze and spin in the Blair era, the chancellor will seek consensus for the historic move to enshrine certain values and rights.
The convention will also look at new powers for parliament and a rebalancing of powers between Whitehall and local government, similar to those laid out in the US constitution of 1787 which has a central place in American law and culture.
