GravatarDead-threaded repost -

In a well-balanced society these people could be honored for the contributions that they COULD make: a good machine operator is a joy to watch. If you have ever taken nail and hammer and saw in hand and then watched a "real" carpenter in action, you know what I mean.

Still, we keep trying to force people into the square holes we have designed for them and then wonder that they do not fit.

I didn't go to college. Hated school. I have a few college credits now. (Just finished a French 101 class that I attended with my 21 yr old son and 23 yr old daughter.) I think that the breadth of a liberal arts education should somehow be part of everyone's elementary education.

GravatarI think that the breadth of a liberal arts education should somehow be part of everyone's elementary education.

Well it's a damn shame that that element of public education has all but disappeared because of standardized testing.

Music and arts classes have been cut because of funding cuts and I think those things are just as if not more important than a lot of things. Like gym and sports.

GravatarTena (reply to comment on last thread) - yes, it violates all kinds of state and city health regulations to leave a sewer pit under a rental property.

GravatarMusic and arts classes have been cut

No comparison, the opportunities that I had vs. the (limited) opportunities my daughter had in high school.

My God, I was given free voice lessons with a professional coach for two years. Audrey has loads more talent, but nothing like that exists these days.

GravatarWhy is it that academic programs are derided as for the elite, but sports facilities are considered to be necessary? Aren't the physically gifted an elite?

Gravatar110/64 BP was a good thing.

That is a good BP.

GravatarTena (reply to comment on last thread) - yes, it violates all kinds of state and city health regulations to leave a sewer pit under a rental property.

I had a customer who is a freind ask me about a bad odor coming from the school next door to her house. It was pretty cool telling her which agencies would be very interested in making the school comply with the law.

GravatarI was under the impression P.E. had been cut from most school budgets years ago. Along with art, music, anything "hands-on." Hard to test that under NCLB.

Gravatarbut nothing like that exists these days

Sure - for $80 a half hour.

Gravatarsmalfish,

NOT in my district. We have no specials whatsoever for our kids. Kind of sickening really. The Association complains but they spend all of their money on secondary education. My elementary school has more students than the high school and middle school combined and we receive less money to operate than either. Go figure.

GravatarFDA restrictions on how the drug is sold without a prescription are contributing to the problem, experts said. The agency requires Plan B to be stored behind the pharmacy counter rather than on store shelves, and buyers must be at least 18 years old and must prove it with government identification.

These restrictions permit pharmacy employees to block access to the drug, whether mistakenly or because of their personal objections. As a result, some noncitizens are being asked to produce government photo IDs, when photos aren't required, and some men are told that only women can buy the drug.

Relentless, these fuckers.

Gravatarits the same here in England.

the arts is being pushed out in favour of 'numeracy' and 'literary' hours.

its all about churning out worker bees for the system rather than creating well rounded individuals

I knew art and music had been cut, and I guess I did know about gym - I forgot.

The whole fucking mess is because of those damn tests and I wish we'd get rid of them.

GravatarThat is a good BP

Believe me darlin', after my surgery my BP came right down. I was in the mid 130's -140's and close to 100 on the lower for quite awhile.

Amazing what pain can do to your entire bodily system.

GravatarTena - no, I don't have a duty to report it. We were called out to look at it because her tenants are raising holy hell. At the point we went and looked at it, she would escape penalty anyway because she is in the process of finding someone to fix it. There's nothing in the law that would require her to go with the first or only contractor to look at the problem.

Tenants here have almost zero rights, so probably what would happen would be that after this went on for awhile, the health dept would condemn the building for habitation. They wouldn't be doing it on behalf of the tenants, though.

GravatarRelentless, these fuckers.

GravatarYou don't have any duty to report it?

Very tricky situation there. The business owner has no obligation to report it, yet we are required by law to make sure the home is sanitary and safe. Yet we have no real recourse. It is up to the tenant or neighbors to report malfeasance. Also, there could be conflict of interest issues.

GravatarFrom TPM:
Gov. Sonny Perdue just finished up his talk-radio session with former U.S. secretary of education Bill Bennett on WGKA (920AM), held at the state Capitol.
[...]
Perdue said he did not. In fact, in Spiro Agnew-like fashion, the governor encouraged nattering nabobs of negatism to put a lid on the loose talk.
Perdue acknowledged that the going in Iraq has been tough. But, he said, "until you've got a better idea, keep your mouth shut."
"This president did not choose war. He chose to protect the United States of America, and I'm thankful that he did," Perdue said.

GravatarFive coalition soldiers have been killed and three are missing after an attack by insurgents south of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, the US military says.

The patrol of seven Americans and their Iraqi interpreter were attacked near the town of Mahmudiya, spokesman Maj Gen William Caldwell said.

He said that within an hour other troops were at the scene of the attack, hunting for the missing soldiers.

Checkpoints have been set up to prevent the soldiers being moved from the area.

True story.

A couple live at the bottom of a hill. The main sewer in the street backs up into said couples home and pretty much destroys the house. City comes out, unstops the sewer and locates a brick in the sewer but does not fix the problem. Couple calls insurance to help pay for damages. Insurance company says not their responsibility, couple goes to city and gets same reply.

The state has a regulatory body that oversees these kinds of spills and ensures that the city clean them up, but apparently not in a private home.

Gravatar“It’ll have a two-day run,” Rice Professor Bob Stein said. Stein didn’t think quoting a racist confederate general, even if he was a KKK leader, would kick up much dust.

A nice phrase, but one that appeared in one Web site after another along with whole paragraphs of copy — a quick indication that while they view their sites as the moon and stars over Washington they are mostly products of cut and paste.

“I’ve almost quit reading blogs,” Stein said. […]

Politically, quoting a Ku Klux Klan leader opens the door for trouble. But stein has known Rep. Poe for years. “He’s no more a racist than any white male,” Stein said.

Cheney used the escort service while he was a part time resident of the posh Ballantrae section of McLean, Virginia.

GravatarWell, I technically wear a dress myself -- as a straight monk & Episcopal priest (there are a few of us), I think it's fair to say that there are a good few gay men in the RC priesthood, but many (most?) of them try to be faithful to their celibate commitment -- after all, if they are honest with themselves about their sexual orientation (not a given) then the celibate priesthood is not only an acceptable way of living with their orientation, but is a good thing approved by the church (a body from which they likely crave approval)

Just my two cents

Upper management is easy to get rid of when administrations change. The worker bees, not so much. Even if they aren't civil service. The culture is just not to fire people.

Except, as GWPDA has pointed out, political appointees are not civil service employees and don't have the same contract protections.

GODDAMNIT. Do I have to make the same fucking point everyday?

I'm not talking about political appointments. I'm talking about regular civil service hires. Those poeple are NOT going away, and that's what most of the illegality is about.

Not a hard concept people.

Gravatarfourlegsgood - well if it is found as a matter of fact that Goodling and others did that with non political jobs, I should think the people hired would be baling because they might get just a tad concerned about the whole thing.

And if not, I should think other people would begin to look at everyone hired if they were hired that way.

I really don't think we are going to be riddled with fundie moles and I really don't see how a bunch of bureaucrats can fuck up things that much. They will have new agency heads and new department heads.

It will be a new government.

I totally agree and it may in fact take time to root them all out. I'm not trying to make light of it. I just feel, having worked for the state and the county and seen how it goes, that a new government will in fact replace a lot of those people. Those who are problematic will end up being either neutralized or fired.

Monday.

GravatarI do think they will come in with eyes wide open.

My mom is always saying she recalls Carter telling an incoming Clinton to clean house immediately before they can start doing damage. Of course, he did not apparently foresee the media's complicity in creating nonexistent scandals (e.g., travelgate...) in order to make it harder to do.

But I am leery of any Dems having the guts to pull off a mass firing of Bush hacks even though I have no doubt such a move would have something like 70% approval.

GravatarRe: postage increase:

It costs the same today to mail a letter as it cost in the twenties, adjusted for inflation.

Frankly, I find it astounding that you can put a letter in the mail and send it anywhere in the nation for a mere 41 cents. Then again, I think the postal service does a generally awesome job.

Why? There is almost always a wholesale resignation in departments and agencies when an administration changes.

We've just seen this - every USA turns in a resignation when a new AG is confirmed. For example.

I don't see one thing untoward about cleaning house - I thought every new administration did it.

GravatarIt's the people who have been put in civil service positions that are the problem. Their entrance to those positions was greased by the political appointee hacks who headed up the various agencies. It's the GSAs who will be a nightmare to get rid of, since they're unionized and all.

I LIKE it like that!

GravatarI guess my position is that over the past few years we have heard a continual drip of stories about young talentless hacks suddenly having hiring and firing and editing power over people who've been doing their jobs since before the hacks were in short pants. All over the federal system, not only Justice. And I don't have to use much tinfoil to suspect Cheney had a direct pipeline to many of them and plans for them to be there long after he's gone.

Maybe I'm being overly-pessimistic, but I see a major uproar in the liberal media the moment the first Bushie is canned by the next Dem administration. There will be much gnashing of teeth and rending of garments and the Dems won't want to appear to be unfair and will back off. I would very much like to be wrong.

Ok.

I guess we'll see, but when there was changeover at the courthouse, lots of people who could not and would not be fired just changed their attitudes on over to match the new folks. And some did get fired. They fired the Chief Clerk of our court who had worked for the state/county for 30 years.

But ok.

Paralegals don't have final responsibility - when it comes down to it - a lawyer signs off. Secretaries have bosses.

Ukrainian drag queen Verka Serdyuchka has been the bookies' favourite so far.

The estimated 100 million TV viewers saw a wide mix of music - folk from Ireland, rock from Finland and Sweden, and old-fashioned pop by UK act Scooch.

The Finnish capital has embraced the competition, with thousands of fans watching on big screens in the city.

More than 350 supporting events were planned as part of the Eurovision "fever".

GravatarGordon Brown will try to restore public trust in British politics by proposing an all-party convention that could pave the way for a written constitution.

In an attempt to draw a line under damaging perceptions over sleaze and spin in the Blair era, the chancellor will seek consensus for the historic move to enshrine certain values and rights.

The convention will also look at new powers for parliament and a rebalancing of powers between Whitehall and local government, similar to those laid out in the US constitution of 1787 which has a central place in American law and culture.
